Sky Italia is launching a high-profile documentary series with international ambitions titled “The Overlooked Serial Killer,” reconstructing a true-crime case that has gripped millions of Italians. The documentary investigates the connection between Elisa Claps, an Italian teenager who disappeared in 1993, and Heather Barnett, a British woman whose mutilated body was found in Bournemouth in 2002.
“The Overlooked Serial Killer” docuseries segues from a recently launched podcast about the case titled “Dove Nessuno Guarda –– Il Caso Claps” that has become Italy’s top podcast on Spotify. The show, which will launch on Sky in Italy later this year — and is likely to play on the Comcast-owned pay-tv operator in the U.K. — is being pitched to international buyers at the Rome Mia market.
This podcast-plus-docuseries production, made by Sky’s Italian news unit SkyTG24 in tandem with Italy’s fast-growing Chora Media podcast company, is the first of its kind for Sky Italia.

The franchise title has topped the £1m mark from its opening day.
Universal’s Fast & Furious 9 leads the new titles at the UK-Ireland box office this weekend, having recorded the highest takings for a weekday since before the Covid-19 pandemic on its Thursday 24 opening.
The film has brought in £1.2m already, and is playing in 597 locations from today.
As of last weekend, the highest-grossing title since cinemas were allowed to reopen in the UK on May 17 was Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway with £15.3m. While an opening weekend of that amount would be an extraordinary result with 50% audience caps still in place,...

Marco Pontecorvo’s account of the Virgin Mary’s radiant appearance in 1917 Portugal finds little space for doubt, nor drama
Picking fault with faith films on dramatic grounds is like objecting to explicit sex scenes for being “boring”. Believers may well be swept away by this glossy account of the 1917 Miracle of the Sun in Fátima, Portugal – witnessed by 30,000 people and already the subject of feature films in 1952 and 2009. But given the inherent lack of drama in the kind of unbreakable faith on display here, anyone wishing to tell the story needs to work much harder than this laboured treatment to wring any nuance, conflict or indeed true sublimity from it.
To be fair, director Marco Pontecorvo – son of The Battle of Algiers’ Gillo – doesn’t disgrace himself on the latter front. There’s an undeniable sacred frisson as Mediterreanean winds caress the olive trees and invisible feet flatten the saltgrass,...

Portugal’s cash rebate scheme, introduced in 2018, is attracting major international productions and new production outfits and facilities, and providing significant leverage for domestic film and TV productions.
Shoots slowed during the pandemic, with several projects lensed in bubbles, but production is expected to surge in the second half of 2021.
The current cash rebate is tabbed at 25/30% of eligible production spend and may be upwardly revised in the near future.
€22.5 million ($27.5 million) in total cash rebate has been disbursed since 2018, roughly equally split between international shoots and 100% Portuguese productions and co-productions.
High-profile projects include Ira Sachs’ “Frankie,” with Isabelle Huppert, Richard Stanley’s “The Color Out of Space,” starring Nicolas Cage, Marco Pontecorvo’s “Fatima,” with Harvey Keitel, and three Bollywood pics. These projects have accessed cash rebate per pic varying between €631,000 and €1.9 million ($2.4 million) Portugal is also shaking up its production eco-system. Funded by Turismo de Portugal, the country’s shoot cash rebate aims to increase Portugal’s international visibility. Secretary of State for Tourism Rita Marques stresses that tourism is a key driver of sustainable growth, job creation and foreign investment, as well as promoting Portuguese and European cultural values: “That’s why we have created one of the most competitive film production incentive systems in Europe, especially oriented to those projects that can bring economic social, and environment value and positive impact to the world.”
Portugal boasts the highest number of sunny days in Europe and greener landscapes than much of Southern Europe. Crews are skilled, multi-lingual and offer highly competitive rates.
The major diversity of natural and cultural heritage within a relatively small country means that shoots can access a wide variety of locales within relatively short distances.

In 1999, opera legend Andrea Bocelli sang at the Academy Awards with Celine Dion when their duet of “The Prayer” was up for a best song Oscar. Twenty-two years later, Bocelli has another shot at boosting a theme song to a nomination as “Gratia Plena,” which he recorded for the movie “Fatima,” enters the race. Composer Paolo Buonvino (“Medici: Masters of Florence”), who wrote the new song, will also contend for his “Fatima” score.
“Fatima” is directed by Marco Pontecorvo and stars Harvey Keitel and Sônia Braga alongside Joaquim de Almeida, Goran Visnjic and Lúcia Moniz.
Below, Bocelli and Buonvino speak exclusively with Variety about crafting the music of “Fatima” and the importance of the film’s message.
What was it like collaborating with Paolo Buonvino for the realization of the song “Gratia Plena”?
Bocelli: It has been a very interesting one. As soon as he composed “Gratia Plena,” he wanted me to hear it.

Warner Bros’ Tenet ruled again in its second weekend while Disney’s The New Mutants opened meekly as the long, slow road to recovery for Australian cinemas continues.
The convoluted time-travel/spy thriller directed by Christopher Nolan rang up $1.6 million on a super-wide 748 screens, falling by 35 per cent, bringing the total to $6.25 million.
Starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki and Kenneth Branagh, the movie launched on 2,810 locations in the US, fetching $US20.2 million – a decent result considering cinemas are closed in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and several other major markets.
In US dollars, the international total topped $126 million including China’s $30 million, a record for Nolan in that territory, and, after their second weekends, the UK’s $13.1 million, France’s $10.7 million and Germany’s $8.7 million.
Numero reported the top 20 titles in Australia generated nearly $3.1 million, 15 per cent below the previous frame.

Director Marco Pontecorvo shot his film “Fátima” entirely on location in Portugal, not just for authenticity, but because the Portuguese government also created a special film incentive package, giving the production a tax credit.
The movie, released via PVOD and in theaters on Aug. 28, is based on historical events in 1917 when three young children reported seeing the Virgin Mary in the rural village of Fatima, Portugal while in the fields. The apparitions caused believers to flock to the site.
Set against a backdrop of World War I, Pontecorvo makes his English feature film debut in the retelling of the story. The former “Game of Thrones” cinematographer sought to find the right towns to film in. He relied on production designer Cristina Onori to transport viewers and the production to 1917. Together, they scouted around, settling on the towns of Tapada de Mafra, Coimbra, Tomar, Lisbon and Cidadelhe to serve as a backdrop.

Too late to salvage a summer movie season wiped out by coronavirus, but boldly hoping to bring audiences back to cinemas (or drive-ins at least), a handful of movies are opening widely this weekend — or as widely as they can in a country where many communities are still restricting public gatherings.

After making its world premiere at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Armando Iannucci’s The Personal History of David Copperfield is ready to hit theaters. Searchlight Pictures is debuting the reimagining of the Charles Dickens’ classic starring Dev Patel in physical theaters (remember those?). To be more specific, the film will open in over 1,350 theaters across the U.S. and Canada with an expansion on September 4. David Copperfield is the first film Searchlight Pictures has released in theaters since Wendy in late February, a month before the pandemic caused box offices to shutter.

Of all the calamity exhibition needs right now as the industry tries to reopen during a pandemic is a hurricane.
Box office analysts are divided on Hurricane Laura’s impact as new fare including 20th Century Studios/Disney’s The New Mutants, Searchlight’s The Personal History of David Copperfield, Uar/Orion’s Bill & Ted Face the Music and Picturehouse’s Fatima try to resuscitate the box office. Some believe the storm, which made landfall on the U.S. Gulf Coast late Wednesday, won’t have an impact at all, while others think it could hurt the South — a box office area in the midst of reawakening.
Right now, Cinemark is planning closures in Louisiana (Lake Charles) and Texas, with Star Cinemas closing cinemas in Hurricane Laura’s Lone Star state zone. The storm has been downgraded to a Category 1, but about...

In 1952, Warner Bros. released a version of “The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima” that boasted, “To the best of human knowledge, and according to the testimony of 100,000 witnesses … This Is A True Story!” That film, hokey in some ways, inspirational in others, purported to be a fact-based account of a faith-based story, one that occurred in 1917 against the backdrop of a world war, wherein three Portuguese shepherd children experienced several visits by the Virgin Mary, who bestowed certain insights upon them before unleashing a spectacular solar light show so as to convince all those assembled.
Director Marco Pontecorvo revisits these events in the superficially suspicious “Fatima,” which arrives at a moment when faith and facts find themselves in direct opposition, when claims of “fake news” render the very notion of “a true story” all but meaningless. The film releases in theaters and on demand amid a global crisis — not just the pandemic,...

Director Marco Pontecorvo’s Fatima will be released in theaters and at home on-demand beginning Friday, August 28th.
Check out the trailer:
In 1917, outside the parish of Fátima, Portugal, a 10-year-old girl and her two younger cousins witness multiple visitations of the Virgin Mary, who tells them that only prayer and suffering will bring an end to World War I. As secularist government officials and Church leaders try to force the children to recant their story, word of the sighting spreads across the country, inspiring religious pilgrims to flock to the site in hopes of witnessing a miracle. What they experience will transform their quiet lives and bring the attention of a world yearning for peace. Will the movies ever let religion back into the mainstream? It doesn’t seem likely, given the secular bent of most critics, festivals, and film awards. But the question could certainly occur to any thoughtful viewer of Marco Pontecorvo’s Fátima, which is set for release by Picturehouse in theaters and via PVOD on Aug. 28.
The film, which has been shown in pop-up previews for the last few weeks, is about the heavenly visions of three young children, who in 1917 said they encountered the Blessed Virgin Mary in a field near Fátima, Portugal. Believers flocked to the site. There may have been miracles. And Mary, said the children, confided three “secrets,” which became the core of an enduring Catholic cult that eventually found of the two young people, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, canonized as saints following their deaths in the 1918 flu pandemic, and made the third, Lùcia dos Santos, a...

Theaters and distributors are locked in a dirty dance that could have serious repercussions down the line. Without new movies to drive audiences to theaters, the question is, why pay the huge costs of reopening? That’s why the world’s largest theater chain, AMC, is moving back its relaunch from July 31 to “mid-to-late August”, while Cinemark is expected to open 75 theaters next weekend.
A stateside “Tenet” release, wavers in limbo, as Warner Bros. will soon announce its first overseas bookings. AMC, for example, states that “approximately one-third of all AMC cinemas in Europe and the Middle East are already open and are operating normally.”
Which leaves two indie movies prepared to open in American theaters in August, as soon as the chains will let them. Picturehouse has already mounted a series of pop-up parking lot premieres including Miami and Los Angeles for Marco Pontecorvo’s Catholic-themed drama “Fatima,” starring...

Bob and Jeanne Berney’s Picturehouse will open Marco Pontecorvo’s Fatima in theaters and direct to home (PVOD) throughout North America on Aug. 28.
The pic was last scheduled for an Aug. 14, 1,000-theater-plus run. The distributor has been having sold out pop-up drive-in previews recently as part of their grassroots word-of-mouth digital marketing campaign.
Picturehouse picked up the movie in October. The movie was first scheduled for April 24 before the exhibition Covid-19 shutdown. The movie is set during the Spanish Flu, and has echoes to what’s going on now.

Exclusive: In a weekend where Warner Bros.’ Christopher Nolan’s Tenet was expected to reopen the major circuits, Disney’s reissue of 2017’s Beauty and the Beast led all titles with an estimated $467K at 527 locations. Disney/Marvel’s Iron Man was second with $430K at 462 sites. Beauty and the Beast ranked No. 1 in its first weekends of the box office, opening to $174.7M on March 17, 2017. The movie continues to hold the March record for the best domestic opening ever; its running lifetime cume now at an estimated $504.5M.
What’s occurring recently in regard to reissues is that studios like Universal, Warner Bros, and Sony are keeping their catalog titles weekly in the marketplace whereas Disney seems to be releasing certain titles widely for a given weekend, i.e. last weekend’s champ Empire Strikes Back made just under $1K this past weekend, ditto for last weekend’s No.

Exclusive: Marco Pontecorvo’s Fatima, the first title to be released by Bob and Jeanne Berney’s revived Picturehouse, is going wide in 1,000 runs on Aug. 14, Deadline has learned.

Fatima was originally scheduled for an April 24 release, however, was delayed due to the exhibition shutdown during the coronavirus pandemic.
In the movie, the children’s revelations inspire believers but anger Church and government officials, who try to force them to recant their story. "What do you want from us?" Picturehouse has debuted an official Us trailer for an indie drama based on a true story titled Fatima. A powerful and uplifting drama about the power of faith, Fatima tells the story of a 10-year-old shepherd and her two young cousins in Fátima, Portugal (Google Maps) in 1917, who report seeing visions of the Virgin Mary. Their revelations inspire believers but anger officials of both the Church and the secular government, who try to force them to recant their story. As word of their prophecy spreads, tens of thousands of religious pilgrims flock to the site in hopes of witnessing a miracle. Of course. Starring Stephanie Gil, with Joaquim de Almeida, Lúcia Moniz, Joana Ribeiro, Harvey Keitel, Goran Visnjic, and Sonia Braga. This looks especially cheesy, and made mostly for the faithful to feel the power. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Marco Pontecorvo's Fatima,...

In 2017, Portugal introduced a tax incentive scheme, revamped in mid-2018 as a 25%-30% cash-rebate scheme, with a €0.5 million ($0.57 million) minimum spend for shoots.
The scheme, run by Portugal’s National Film and Audiovisual Institute (Ica) and Turismo de Portugal, has earmarked $14.4 million per year for 2019-21.
The new, more competitive terms — which include a higher rate, lower minimum spend and, critically, application during shooting — has led to a tenfold increase in applications.
Under the previous scheme there were three request to use the scheme, two of which were transferred to the new scheme, whereas in the first six months of the revamped scheme there have been 23 applications, 15 of which have already been approved, corresponding to a global production spend in Portugal of $28.5 million.
Portugal’s film commission system, overseen by Pic Portugal, is undergoing a major overhaul, including a fast-track film permit system and an online locations database.

Here’s one of the nicest treats of the year: a sweet, bracingly original, wholly entertaining film from John Turturro with a plum part for none other than Woody Allen. In fact, every role is perfectly and inventively cast—and each player lovingly shot by cinematographer Marco Pontecorvo. What’s more, the soundtrack features jazz great Gene Ammons playing a number of timeless standards. Allen has often said that he has a limited range as an actor, but this part was crafted with him in mind. He’s a delight to watch, looking much younger than his years and firing up his comedic chops as a garrulous friend of Turturro’s who proposes him for a surprising job: acting as gigolo for ...

In his latest, “Fading Gigolo,” John Turturro exercises what amounts to the urban auteur’s droit de seigneur, casting himself as a member of New York’s studliest, directing himself into a three-way with Sharon Stone and Sofia Vergara, and satisfying a client list that looks like it walked out of the pages of Vogue Paris. His pimp? Woody Allen. Yes, there are many distracting, stunt-like happenings in Turturro’s latest directorial effort -- including the presence of Vanessa Paradis as a Hasidic widow from Williamsburg – enough that one might easily be distracted from the more soulful qualities of Turturro’s chamber comedy, its utterly personal statement on love and intimacy and, of course, its utterly fanciful story, set in an imaginary city called New York. Turturro tends to go his own way as a director, being, among other things, a voluptuary re: visuals – there is one shot of Turturro...
