Sneaky, menacing and funny are descriptions that come up more than once in Martin McDonagh’s Hangmen, but not one of the three words quite does justice to this irresistibly pitch-black comedy, opening tonight at the Golden Theatre on Broadway.
Then again, justice has very little to do with what goes on in this deliciously wicked tale of bloodstained propriety and revenge, state-sanctioned or otherwise. Set mostly in a Lancashire pub in the mid-1960s during the last days of England’s legal capital punishment, the Olivier Award-winning Hangmen resurrects not only an era of U.K. history but the playwright’s early fascination with very dark impulses.
And no one does dark impulses with as much comedic flare – yes, it’s sneaky, menacing and funny – as McDonagh at full tilt.

Hangmen, Martin McDonagh’s Olivier Award-winning comedy that became (seemingly) an early casualty of Broadway’s 2020 Covid shutdown, has gotten a reprieve: The play will begin previews at Broadway’s Golden Theatre on Friday, April 8, with an opening night set for Thursday, April 21.
Co-starring in the limited 10-week engagement will be Alfie Allen, best known to American audiences for his indelible Game of Thrones portrayal of Theon “Reek” Greyjoy, and David Threlfall, returning to Broadway for the first time in 25 years.
The Royal Court Theatre/Atlantic Theater Company production of Hangmen will be directed by Matthew Dunster, who directed the pre-shutdown Broadway staging that co-starred Downton Abbey‘s Dan Stevens and Game of Thrones‘ Mark Addy as Harry (now to be played by Threlfall).
Prior to the shutdown, Hangmen began previews at the Golden on February 28, 2020, and was scheduled...

Update, with Broadway relief agreement The Broadway production of Martin McDonagh’s new comedy Hangmen will not resume performances when the coronavirus shutdown is lifted. The producers of the Olivier Award-winning play, starring Downton Abbey‘s Dan Stevens and Game of Thrones‘ Mark Addy, said today that they do not “have the economic resources” to reopen.
In a statement, producers Robert Fox, Jean Doumanian, Elizabeth I. McCann and Craig Balsam said, “Because of the current health crisis which has created circumstances beyond our control, it is with deep regret that we are not able to resume performances of Hangmen. With no definite end in sight of the government’s closure and Broadway’s suspension, we have no alternative but to release the actors from their contracts and close the production.”

When British director Ben Wheatley’s new film A Field in England was released in the U.K. last year one newspaper hailed the 17th century drama as “Apocalypse Now among the hedgerows.” Certainly this latest movie from the director of Sightseers, Kill List, and the forthcoming, Tom Hiddleston-starring High-Rise makes for an unforgettable experience as audiences here will discover when the film arrives in select cinemas and on VOD tomorrow.

Following its release in the UK last summer, Ben Wheatley’s A Field in England is finally about to get its stateside release at the start of next month.
Drafthouse Films is also launching a simultaneous theatrical and VOD release, taking a similar direction to the unique multi-platform release we saw here last year.
With its Us release right around the corner, Drafthouse has released a new trailer teasing just some of the chaos that ensues in Wheatley’s latest, along with an appropriately psychedelic poster designed by Jay Shaw to match. And in case you needed any more persuading, Martin Scorsese himself is quoted as a fan of the film.

Acclaimed British director Ben Wheatley follows last year’s dark comedy Sightseers with his most experimental film to date, an atmospheric, art-house take on the English Civil War.
Watching A Field in England feels a little like being plunged into a nightmare: an unpredictable, dream-like experience, brimming with brilliantly disturbing sequences and disorienting surrealism. Audiences craving easy exposition and logical plot development may well find the film frustrating, but fans of Wheatley’s Kill List, particularly its haunting last act, will be in their element here.
Reece Shearsmith plays Whitehead, an educated manservant who flees the smoke-filled battlefields of the Civil War and joins up with two other deserters (Peter Ferdinando and Richard Glover). A fourth man (Ryan Pope) leads the group to an empty field, enclosed within a fairy-ring of mushrooms. Events take an increasingly unsettling, hallucinogenic turn after mysterious Irish alchemist O’Neil (Michael Smiley) is literally “roped in” to the action.

Film4 and Picturehouse have reported initial figures for the UK’s first simultaneous feature release across all formats.
Ben Wheatley’s psychedelic horror film was released simultaneously in cinemas, on DVD, free TV and VoD on Friday [July 5].
Released theatrically by Picturehouse Entertainment on 17 sites, it generated $32,000 (£21,399) over the weekend at a $1,876 (£1,259) average.
The film played to sold-out crowds at the likes of the Ritzy, Curzon Soho and Hackney Picturehouse in London, Dukes at Komedia in Brighton and Edinburgh’s Cameo.
For a limited release, the results are solid given the niche appeal of the film, in which a group of men descend into a magic mushroom-induced madness while searching for treasure in a field on the fringes of the English Civil War.
It also competed with the hottest weekend of the year and major sporting events including the Wimbledon tennis finals and International Test rugby final between the British & Irish Lions and Australia’s Wallabies.

★★★☆☆ British director Ben Wheatley has a bold habit of experimentation, having previously married kitchen sink drama to comic crime thriller in 2009's Down Terrace, social realism to occult horror in 2011's Kill List, and British camping comedy to serial killing in Sightseers (2012). His new film, A Field in England (2013), is in much the same vein. An English Civil War era costume drama about a mystical hunt for buried treasure with psychedelic monochrome visuals, it lies somewhere between Michael Reeves' The Witchfinder General, Werner Herzog's Aguirre, the Wrath of God and Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man - a potent mix.
Co-written by Wheatley's off-screen and collaborative partner Amy Jump and shot by regular cinematographer Laurie Rose, A Field in England bears the same sardonic dialogue, stomach-churning violence and earthy English countryside as his previous films. Our voyage begins with Whitehead (Reece Shearsmith), a God-fearing alchemist who stumbles across deserters...

A Field In England, prolific low-budget and lo-fi filmmaker Ben Wheatley’s latest effort, continues the original and highly distinctive work he’s made thus far but pushes past boundaries and expectations to create a brilliantly psychotic burst of filmmaking which feels like it’s ventured forth from a parallel universe version of the 1960s.

Ben Wheatley has never been one to do things by the book. His film breakthrough Down Terrace took the gangster drama and placed it within the confines of a Brighton family home, Kill List was a hitman thriller that spun off into occult horror and last year's Sightseers, his most accessible film to date, landed somewhere near the intersection of Mike Leigh and Terrence Malick's Badlands. When Wheatley makes a film, genres will bend and what you think is about to unfold on screen usually becomes something entirely unexpected.

Director Ben Wheatley returns with the hallucinatory A Field In England. Ryan explains why you should see it...
A Field In England begins with that most British of quests: the hunt for a decent pub. Featuring an ensemble cast including Reece Shearsmith, Julian Barratt and Michael Smiley, director Ben Wheatley's fourth feature film (discounting his segment in the horror anthology The ABCs Of Death) sees him turn from the contemporary settings of Down Terrace, Kill List and Sightseers, and back to the grubby meadows of the English Civil War.
Amid the chaos of the 17th century war, four deserters stumble from the battlefields and head off in search of a pint of ale. Among them is Whitehead (Shearsmith), a meek, verbose "assistant to a gentleman of Norwich" on the trail of a thief called O'Neil, who's stolen a collection of his master's occult documents.

If you thought the first trailer for Ben Wheatley’s latest, A Field In England (lurking at the bottom of the page) was a bit trippy, here comes the new one to laugh mockingly at your notions of trippy and get extra weird just for good measure. You have been warned. Wheatley’s Civil War enigma is shaping up to be one of the most memorable cinematic experiences of the year, and given the man’s past form, hopefully one of the best. The story finds Richard Glover, Peter Ferdinando and Reece Shearsmith as survivors of a Civil War battle captured by Michael Smiley's alchemist and his sidekick Ryan Pope, and put to work helping him dig up a mysterious treasure trove. When they discover another hoard – of magic mushrooms – things start to get seriously weird. This new promo, which puts us in mind of Hammer promos from the...

The first poster has been released for director Ben Wheatley's trippy sounding English Civil War film A Field in England. Wheatley is the same director that brought us the twisted movies Kill List and Sightseers. This next film has been described as "a psychedelic trip into magic and madness." So you can bet it going to end up being just as crazy as his other films, only this is set in 1648.

Here's our first look at director Ben Wheatley's new film A Field in England, which takes place during the English Civil War. This movie comes from the same mind that brought us the twisted films Kill List and Sightseers. His next film will also be built around very dark and twisted elements, and has previously been described as "a psychedelic trip into magic and madness." So you can count me in!

Here’s a new 60-second trailer for Sightseers, a road trip comedy about two people who just happen to share a mutual desire to kill.
Sightseers is the third film from award-winning director Ben Wheatley (Down Terrace, Kill List), starring Alice Lowe, Steve Oram, Eileen Davies, Jonathan Aris, Richard Glover and Monica Dolan. The pitch black comedy penned by its stars – Lowe and Oram – is about two young lovers who take a caravanning holiday around the British Isles.
However, the trip taken by introverted dog-lover Tina (Lowe) and Chris (Oram) doesn’t take very long to fade, either. ‘Noisy teenagers and pre-booked caravan sites, not to mention Tina’s meddling mother, soon conspire to shatter Chris’s dreams and send him, and anyone who rubs him up the wrong way, over a very jagged edge…’

Following on the back of his success last year with Kill List, Ben Wheatley returns behind the camera to release Sightseers in the UK at the end of the month. Showing no signs of slowing down, the promising young writer-director has already finished up shooting his next film, A Field in England.
The 17th Century-set psychedelic horror was originally set to shoot early next year, but since the announcement came in September, Wheatley has already finished filming, and is now in editing, and Film4 have given us our first image from the film.

Ben Wheatley is a busy guy. Even as we chatted with him at Tiff about "Sightseers," he was already in pre-production on his next movie, "A Field In England," which again finds him shifting gears in fascinating ways. A period movie that will be both in black and white and color, and a production that will find him building his own camera lenses from scratch, we can only imagine the final result will be a bit more trippy than this first image. According to this blog post from Film4, it seems production has already wrapped on the film, which stars Michael Smiley ("Kill List"), Peter Ferdinando ("Tony"), Reece Shearsmith ("The League of Gentlemen"), Julian Barratt ("The Mighty Boosh"), Richard Glover ("Sightseers") and Ryan Pope ("Ideal"). Here's the synopsis: The film follows a small group of deserters fleeing from a raging battle through an overgrown field. As they are captured by.

If you’re familiar with Ben Wheatley‘s Kill List already, you’ve probably developed a strange and terrifying phobia of tunnels. If you aren’t, you owe yourself a screening of the modern horror classic. You didn’t much like tunnels anyway, did you?
Wheatley is a British director, of course, which basically means that his movies don’t cost as much as American ones. He made his name with Kill List back in 2011, and then followed it up with the strange caravan comedy Sightseers, which is just as bizarre as it sounds. So what’s next for the man who refuses to stick to a single genre and is just, like, making whatever the bloody heck he wants?
How about an English Civil War flick about mushroom-eating treasure hunters? Yeah? You want that? Check out the first still from A Field In England above then, which has been...

No one can deny that Ben Wheatley is a rising directorial star, after the excellent Kill List and Sightseers. But he’s also a whirling dervish of cinematic creativity who seemingly operates at speeds that would kill normal humans. Case in point? Ben Wheatley might not be a household name in America just yet, but he’s taking a good crack at it. With his nightmarish thriller Kill Lists cropping up on a number of Best of 2012 lists, Wheatley is poised to become a hot commodity on both sides of the pond.
Today, he has announced his fourth feature, titled A Field in England and fully financed by Film4.
A Field in England is set during the English Civil War and revolves around a group of deserting soldiers who end up in a mushroom field and embark on a “psychedelic trip into magic and madness.”
The full synopsis provides a view of even more weirdness afoot:

Kill List director Ben Wheatley has found a new film project to work on, and it sounds insane! If you haven't seen Kill List yet, you should check it out. The movie is a drama, dark comedy, gangster thriller, and occult horror, all rolled into one. It was a well made film that left a sick feeling in my stomach. This latest movie sounds like another good project for Wheatley to take on. He does a great job of mixing together genres to create a crazy unique experience.
The next movie he's working on is called A Field in England, a psychedelic U.K.-set Civil War movie that you can bet is going to be awesomely weird. It's described as being, "a psychedelic trip into magic and madness."
According to Film4, the story is set in 1648, and follows a small group of deserters "fleeing from a raging battle through an overgrown field.

Coming off the gut-punch success of Kill List and hoping for similar results with his forthcoming Sightseers (and his ABCs of Death entry), Ben Wheatley is apparently going to wandering around in a war-torn field looking for treasure and mind-altering substances. Not a bad way to spend a sunny English weekend. According to Film4, Wheatley will be directing A Field in England – the first feature to be fully financed by the Film4.0 initiative. Amy Jump, who co-wrote Kill List and edited Sightseers, will co-write this with Wheatley as well. The movie, which will star Michael Smiley, Peter Ferdinando, Reece Shearsmith, Julian Barratt, Richard Glover and Ryan Pope, focuses on a group of men who bail on a vicious English Civil War battle (circa 1648) only to be caught by two strange men looking for a treasure in the middle of a mushroom-heavy field. Then, chaos reigns. Charles I probably won’t be happy about it. It...

Arriving on the scene with the stunningly well filmed (and just plain odd) "Kill List" last year, British filmmaker Ben Wheatley is certainly not resting on his laurels.
Having already got "Sightseers" in the can for release later this year and the monster thriller "Freakshift" in development, Wheatley is managing to squeeze in yet another film - "A Field in England" for Film4.0 says Screen Daily.
Set during the English Civil War, the story follows a small group of deserters who flee from a raging battle through an overgrown field. Captured by two men, one an alchemist, they are forced to help in his search to find a hidden treasure buried somewhere in the field.
Crossing a vast circle of mushrooms, the group descends into a chaos of fighting and paranoia. The treasure isn't what they expect and they "become victim to the terrifying energies trapped inside the field".

After giving us nightmares with the unpredictable thriller Kill List, director Ben Wheatley is going way, way back. The UK helmer already has one film in the can with the road-trip-turned-deadly dark comedy Sightseers, but now Film4 has announced his latest.

He may be fielding calls from Hollywood, but British director Ben Wheatley is happy to be making films in his home country for the time being, with his fourth film A Field in England just announced. Wheatley is also going back to the well in terms of his cast, choosing actors he has worked with before as well as regular method of casting comedy actors in dramatic roles. This film stars Michael Smiley (Kill List), Richard Glover (Sightseers), Reece Shearsmith (The League of Gentlemen), Julian Barratt (The Mighty Boosh), Ryan Pope and Peter Ferdinando. Described as an English Civil War film, A Field In England could well be a science fiction movie if the longer synopsis is any judge.
