Perhaps the most important prison-set drama series is the iconic Prison Break. But an equally high-profile show about the plight of inmates, their survival in a rigid prison hierarchy and under the constant scrutiny of correctional officers, is Orange Is the New Black, which ran on Netflix from 2013 to 2019. Love and drama, camaraderie and betrayal, life and death — despite its comedic tone, the show has enough dark moments to keep you riveted to the screen until the very end.
And if 2024 doesn't give you enough of the emotions that Orange Is the New Black evoked, we suggest you check out another series available on the streaming service. This is an Australian drama that, while released alongside the aforementioned Oitnb, offers an equally compelling plot, but has proven less popular outside of Australia.
Luckily, Netflix users have rediscovered it, and some have already called it 'the best series ever,'...

When Foxtel first began to craft with Fremantle Wentworth back in 2011, the hope was it would sit comfortably alongside the service’s premium HBO and BBC dramas.
While based on Reg Watson’s long-running ’80s drama Prisoner, and suitably honouring its legacy, it was not designed to a be remake. The desire was to see a modern reimagining of the characters; one that was ambitious and bold.
“We wanted to make something great for Foxtel and set the bar high. It was all part of our hopes for what we could do in the future,” executive producer and former Foxtel head of drama Penny Win recalls to If.
Originally created by Lara Radulovich and David Hannam, Fremantle Australia CEO Ian Hogg pitched Foxtel director of television Brian Walsh the series over a meal in Cannes.

The final season of Sbs’s The Family Law, the first series of ABC’s The Heights and the Sbs miniseries The Hunting have won the 10th annual Equity Ensemble Awards.
The actors who starred in these programs were voted the most outstanding Australian small screen ensembles in their respective categories by the Meaa Equity National Performers’ Committee (Npc).
Equity president Chloe Dallimore, who was among the 33 Npc members who selected this year’s finalists and winners, said: “I can’t think of a better way to spend lockdown than re-watching the incredible small screen performances of the last 12 months. What phenomenal talent we have in this country, both in front and behind the camera.
“It emphasised what’s at stake if we don’t continue to vigorously defend our local content quotas, and why we must continue to remind our government how the arts contribute to our Australian cultural identity.

Marta Dusseldorp in ‘Wentworth’ (Photo credit: Sarah Enticknap).
In a world away from A Place to Call Home, Marta Dusseldorp has donned the prison track suit with a guest role in Foxtel’s Wentworth, which resumes shooting this week.
Her character Sheila Bausch, a senior figure in the True Path cult, is on remand, charged with the murder of nine people at the cult’s retreat.
Described as highly intelligent, charismatic and manipulative, Sheila worked as the personal secretary for True Path’s founder Dr Mendel (Brian Vriends).
The Fremantle production re-starts after shutting down on March 23, just before a planned hiatus. The show has the advantage of being shot in its own large building in Melbourne, which has the flexibility of moving scenes set in a small cell to a bigger cell.
Executive producer Jo Porter, who is Fremantle’s director of scripted, said: “We have carefully adjusted our...

Sophie Hyde’s Animals opened in UK cinemas last weekend, its first territory, winning plaudits from the critics and sizable audiences.
Picturehouse Entertainment launched the female relationships dramedy adapted from the Emma Jane Unsworth novel, which stars Holliday Grainger and Alia Shawkat, on 73 locations: 38 in greater London and 35 in the regions.
The weekend total including Q&a screenings hosted by Unsworth and a National Girlfriends’ Day promotion was £107,000.
Closer Productions’ Rebecca Summerton, who produced the Irish-Australian co-production with Hyde, Sarah Brocklehurst and Vico Films’ Cormac Fox, tells If she is very pleased with the UK opening and Picturehouse’s marketing campaign.
That augurs well for the September 12 release via Jonathan Page’s Bonsai Films. Page has booked nine screens and aims to have 15 on board at launch.

‘My Life is Murder.’
Cjz’s private investigator series My Life is Murder and Closer Productions’ four-part drama The Hunting have been acquired by UK broadcasters.
Multi-channel operator UKTV will screen the 10-part Cjz production, which follows Lucy Lawless as former homicide cop Alexa Crowe as she investigates baffling and bizarre murders, on its crime drama channel Alibi.
Directed by Leah Purcell, Mat King and Jovita O’Shaugnessy and produced by Elisa Argenzio and Cjz head of development Claire Tonkin, the series premiered on Network 10 on Wednesday night.
The first episode drew 482,000 viewers in the mainland capitals, trailing Shaun Micallef’s Mad as Hell’s 495,000, despite the fact the ABC mistakenly put to air the previous week’s episode of Micallef.
However the 7-day and 28-day figures for 10’s murder-mystery are bound to be a lot higher. The consolidated total for Five Bedrooms, for example, was 642,000 in the five metros,...

Niki Aken.
When screenwriter Niki Aken started writing TV shows seven years ago, she was the only one with an Asian or non-white heritage in the room.

I had done two feature dramas, so I wrote a script, but it was really expensive and it was really hard to get made and I just put it away. [But] It just wouldn't go away. It was this thing that kept nagging at me. I thought: can I tell it as a documentary? I got a filmmaker residency in Zurich in 2012. It was a fourteen week paid residency where I could work on a project. I had to give some masterclasses but I had a lot of time. I suddenly had this brainwave. I've been making films since the 1970's, and I've often drawn on my story to create images or construct characters. I'd literally re-created some images from my...

Wentworth Prison is returning to UK screens for a third series - and star Pamela Rabe thinks she knows the secret of the show's success.
Rabe told Digital Spy that the Aussie drama - based on the '80s soap opera Prisoner - is a hit because it features diverse representations of womanhood.
"There's obviously a huge fanbase that remembers the original Prisoner series, but there's a whole new audience who's never seen it, and wouldn't have even been born when it aired," said the actress, who plays Joan Ferguson.
"I think a lot of its success has to do with seeing women of all shapes and sizes and ages and ethics parade across our television screens, I think that's really exciting and people really enjoy it.
"The fact that a series like Orange Is The New Black is also enjoying a huge success means that people are hungry for this.

The Great British Bake Off: BBC One, 8pm
We're at the halfway point now, and the competition is getting tense. No-one storms out of the marquee in this episode, or accidentally conducts Baked Alaska-based espionage, but with the pressure on, even Paul and Mary can't keep their cool.
The pair spark their first on-screen war of words tonight and, like the European cakes the contestant are desperately trying to throw together, it's delicious.
Scott & Bailey: ITV, 9pm
The popular detective drama returns for a fourth series tonight. With Janet Scott (Lesley Sharp) and Rachel Bailey (Suranne Jones) up for the same promotion to Sergeant, the spirit of competition is in the air.
Meanwhile, the pair must investigate when a pub landlord reports that one of his employees has gone missing, and a woman's body is found in a flooded quarry.

Following the national meltdown (sorry) over the Baked Alaska 'bingate' drama last week, Bake Off returns without Iain, or Diana, who dropped out of filming for health reasons.
Emotions are running understandably high as the remaining bakers prepare a selection of pies and tarts, and try their hardest to avoid Mary Berry's least favourite feature: a soggy bottom.

Appalled at the treatment of the animals at a local circus, ex-soldier George Mottershead (Lee Ingleby) relocates a monkey and a parrot to his parents back yard - much to their distaste. Liz White, Ralf Little, Anne Reid, Sophia Myles and Stephen Campbell Moore (pictured) also star.
