The George A. Romero classic Dawn of the Dead (get it Here) is a film that can actually reasonably celebrate its 45th anniversary in two separate years. While its premiere was held at the Cannes Film Festival in 1978 and a cut of the film that was put together by co-financier Dario Argento for non-English speaking countries was given a theatrical release in Italy that year, the cut Romero put together for English-language speaking territories didn’t make its way to screens in the United States until ’79. So whether you’re celebrating Dawn of the Dead‘s 45th anniversary in 2023 or 2024, or both, you’re still doing it right. Red Band Releasing is looking to bring Dawn of the Dead back to the screen in the U.S. and Canada this year, and have sent out a message to fans, telling them that if they want to see the movie on the big screen,...

Regal Cinemas is bringing Dawn of the Dead back to theaters for one night only on October 27th in celebration of the horror classic’s 45th anniversary.
George A. Romero’s 1978 film — a sequel of sorts to his 1968 project Night of the Living Dead — stars David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott Reiniger, and Gaylen Ross as survivors of a zombie outbreak who take refuge in a suburban shopping mall while mass hysteria wreaks havoc on their town. While in production, the project caught the attention of fellow horror filmmaker Dario Argento who agreed to co-finance the film in exchange for distribution rights in his home country of Italy. Having recently come to international acclaim with his magnum opus Suspiria, Argento’s co-sign on Dawn of the Dead also helped propel Romero’s success.

1981 was a banner year for slasher cinema.
Michael Myers got into the franchise game with Halloween II. It turns out Jason Voorhees wasn’t dead at the bottom of Crystal Lake and he picked up right where his mom left off in Friday the 13th Part 2. And beloved one-off slasher classics such as My Bloody Valentine, The Prowler, and The Burning all took their turns staining the silver screen red in ‘81.
One other slasher film from that year has managed to make a modest name for itself in the intervening years – Joe Giannone’s Madman. This other, other camp-set slasher of ‘81 actually shares some fun history with The Burning. Believe it or not, Madman was conceived as a Cropsey film and the production had to tweak itself when they caught wind that another Cropsey-based horror film had just beaten them to the production punch.

A meeting of two great masters of horror, Creepshow blends George A. Romero’s macabre brand of satire with Stephen King’s darkly moral vision of the world. The anthology film doesn’t blossom out from the nihilism that marks Romero and King’s more famous works, but from audience-friendly parody and their shared love of the infamous publisher EC Comics, one of the earliest targets and casualties of the Comics Code Authority. Comic-book aesthetics dominate the film, from vivid splashes of color to animated effects like frames divided into panels and page-flip transitions between segments. With Creepshow, Romero and King stepped far enough outside their creative comfort zones to find fruitful common ground in the film’s five stories, and without one artist’s personality outweighing the other’s.
Creepshow’s five stories are linked by a through line of sardonic moralism, a sense of reckoning redolent of Flannery O’Connor’s anti-fables.

Although far from the first horror anthology, Creepshow quickly established itself as the quintessential one. After several stalled attempts to work together, George A. Romero and Stephen King — two undisputed masters in their respective fields, each in their prime — finally collaborated in 1982. With both creators having grown up on EC horror comics of the 1950s like Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and The Haunt of Fear, it made sense that an homage to those works would bring the two titans of terror together.
Creepshow packs five tales (three originals and two adapted from existing King short stories) plus a wraparound that bookends the film in two hours flat. The Halloween-set framing story finds a disparaging father lambasting his son for reading horror comics before throwing away the latest issue of Creepshow. Beckoned by the silent host known as The Creep, the tales within the discarded comic serve as the anthology’s segments.

George A. Romero is one of my favorite filmmakers, so of course his 1982 Stephen King collaboration Creepshow (watch it Here) is one of my favorite films… and I’m glad to hear that Scream Factory is set to give the classic anthology movie a 4K Uhd release on June 27th. Copies are available for pre-order on the Scream Factory website, and there are multiple options to choose from. You can buy the 4K Uhd copy of the movie on its own, in a bundle with exclusive posters, an exclusive slipcover, and a prism sticker, in another bundle that adds an enamel pin set into the mix, or in another bundle that adds on some lobby cards. There are limited numbers of these bundles available, so head over to Scream Factory Asap to get yours.

Horror fans are no strangers to the curse of deleted scenes and the seemingly arbitrary nature of the MPAA. Genre heavyweights like Brandon Cronenberg must contend with a rating system that can make or break a film, while studios cut R-rated features, endeavoring to garner that more accessible, ever-so-profitable PG-13. Throughout horror history, there are hundreds of excised scenes, some of which, including the now infamous baboon from "The Fly," are readily available, with others, such as many "Friday the 13th" deaths, relegated to the annals of "could have been."
Even more curious, however, are ideas so brutal they were never filmed, to begin with. While brutality at times seems to be the genre's core attraction, there are times when, either at the behest of a studio or filmmaker, planned scenes are scrapped. While the reasons differ from production to production, here we'll be looking at six ideas from famous...

I remember seeing the 1978 classic, Dawn of the Dead, in the mid-90s. It was one of the first horror movies I ever really fell in love with, and helped turn me into a fully fledged horror fan. George A. Romero’s masterpiece has become an iconic picture in the history of cinema, and one of the most beloved horror films of all time. While it wasn’t the first zombie movie, it certainly changed the landscape of what a zombie movie could be. From the location to the music to the scenes of gore, Dawn of the Dead is absolutely and undeniably great.

Scream Factory’s new Collector's Edition Blu-ray of the 1982 horror anthology Creepshow might just be the release of the year. Between an amazing new 4K restoration, a host of new special features, and even the very cool new cover art and packaging, the movie is finally receiving the love and care it has deserved for more than 35 years. This is Creepshow as it should be.
Directed by the late, great George A. Romero and written by the equally great Stephen King, Creepshow remains, as far as this writer is concerned, the best horror anthology ever made. It tells five stories in the grand tradition of 1950s EC comics, in which the dead are constantly rising up to get revenge and the guilty receive their just desserts. The tagline from its original theatrical release, “The most fun you’ll ever have getting scared,” represents one of the only times in horror...

If you're an avid reader of Daily Dead or a longtime listener of our Corpse Club podcast, then you know we have a lot of love for George A. Romero's Creepshow. Earlier this year, Amok Time let collectors have their cake and eat it too with a figure based on the ravenous zombie from the "Father's Day" segment of the 1982 anthology film, and now they're looking to tide us over with new action figures based on a living dead Harry (Ted Danson) and Becky (Gaylen Ross).
Unpainted digital renderings of Amok Time's new Monstarz Creepshow figures are featured in the images below, showing the zombified versions of Harry and Becky after they were targeted at high tide by Becky's husband, the malevolent Richard Vickers (Leslie Nielsen).
While we'll have to wait and see what these figures look like in their fully colored forms, they are now available to pre-order ahead of their November release.

Of all the many sub-genres in horror, the slasher is probably my favorite. There aren’t many good ones, but even the bad ones tend to deliver exactly what we want from the formula. They’re horror movie comfort food, and Shudder is offering an entire buffet this October.
Black Christmas (1973, dir. Bob Clark) In many ways the first modern slasher film, Bob Clark’s holiday horror movie is, to this day, a genre masterpiece. From its chilly Canadian atmosphere to the disturbing obscene phone calls being made to a sorority house, Black Christmas is brilliantly constructed and hugely influential. It’s not just one of my favorite slasher movies, but one of my favorite horror movies of any type, full stop.
Blood Rage (1987, dir. Bruce Rubin) There are slasher movies that are tense and scary and stylish. Blood Rage is not one of them. Shot in 1983 but not released...

I love a heartwarming, feel-good romance story just as much as the next person, but sometimes, it’s those doomed cinematic relationships that tend to stick with you the most. One of the more interesting ill-fated couples I recently encountered was Rob (Cian Barry) and Holly (Abigail Hardingham) from Nina Forever. The new couple must endure the looming presence of Rob’s ex-girlfriend, Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy), who died recently in a car accident and happens to show up anytime they become intimate.
The pitch-black comedy touches on a lot of the complications that come with modern relationships and all the proverbial baggage we endure as a result of our previous romantic entanglements. It really struck me throughout the story just how well directors Ben and Chris Blaine perfectly explore those themes in Nina Forever, making me realize that some of my very favorite movie love affairs, particularly from the 1980s,...

Madman screens this weekend (November 20th and 21st) in 35mm at the newly-refurbished The Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave, St. Louis) as part of Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhouse
After the initial Friday The 13th, during the early 80’s, the summer camp horror sub-genre of slasher flicks took a firm grip of the American imagination. The 1982 entry Madman seems to shares a kinship with another of its kind, The Burning, filmed in upstate New York around the same time and also inspired by the real-life around-the-campfire story of The Kropsy Maniac. Madman stars Gaylen Ross, the lead in Romero’s Dawn Of The Dead, acting under alias Alex Dubin
I’ve seen The Burning, but don’t believe I ever saw Madman. I could be wrong since since much of the ‘80s was a blur.

Special Mention: The Most Dangerous Game
Directed by Irving Pichel and Ernest B. Schoedsack
Written by James Creelman
USA, 1932
Genre: Survival Horror
The first of many official and unofficial screen versions of Richard Connell’s short story of the same name, The Most Dangerous Game was made in 1932, in the era known as “Pre-Code Hollywood,” a time when filmmakers were able to get away with sexual innuendo, illegal drug use, adultery, abortion, intense violence, homosexuality, and much more. It was during this time that a film like The Most Dangerous Game was allowed to be made and shown to the general public without fear of censorship. The film was put together by producer Willis O’Brien while in pre-production on King Kong, and features several of the same cast and crew members, as well as props and sets from Kong. Despite these obvious cost-cutting measures, Dangerous Game never feels like a second-rate production,...

Read More: The 20 Best Documentaries Of 2015 So Far More than 20 years in the making, boxing documentary "Titleshot" will be granted another chance to make it to the big screen with filmmaker Gaylen Ross's launch of an Indiegogo campaign to take the 16mm prints of the uncompleted film and combine it with new footage. The film follows the rise and fall of up-and-coming boxer Godfrey Nyakana. "Titleshot" records some of the biggest names of boxing during the 1990's. Fighters "Sugar" Shane Mosley and Kevin Kelley, along with Muhammad Ali's trainer Angelo Dundee, all make appearances. "The dramatic behind-the-scenes of professional boxing are fly on the wall filming, and rarely, if ever, accessible to outsiders. From a midnight meeting post-fight with trainer and manager in a hotel lobby, to a career-determining confrontation with a fighter, it's the stuff of boxing you only find in scripted feature films," said Ross in a statement.

Urban Legends and camp-fires are the perfect way to start a horror film. Point to an old abandoned house and say that a crazy old man still lives there, you must not shout his name or he’ll come and get you. Perfect start to a slasher right? This is the basic plot for Madman, an early 80s genre flick which has had the Arrow Video Blu-ray treatment.
When a group of camp counsellors are telling scary stories around a campfire, they are warned not to say the name of Madman Marz, a crazy old farmer who is still said to haunt the woods around his abandoned home, conveniently close to the camp.

When I was a teenager, the Boy Scout troop that I was a member of consisted of nearly 25 scouts. We had a few older scouts whom the rest of the younger scouts looked up to, and during our weekend camping trips the seniors made every effort to scare the beejezus out of us youngsters with ludicrous tales of ghosts or killers hiding out in the woods. These stories were often woven around a campfire in the late hours of the evening when we were all seemingly vulnerable. During the summer of 1980, Sean Cunningham’s Friday the 13th was doing well at the box office, so I was already aware of these “murderers in the woods”-themed films. This didn’t make it any easier for us to go on camping trips! The success of Friday the 13th gave birth to countless carbon copies of young adults-being-stalked-in-the-woods films.

Regular readers will know that I am not a big fan of the slasher genre. A lot of the times, I am just bored to tears. I would much rather watch a giallo when it’s at its most convoluted, than a ‘classic’ slasher. That being said, I’m a fair guy. I believe every film should be watched at least once before you offer your opinion. Thankfully, the lovely folks over at Vinegar Syndrome have been sending over many films that I have never heard of and films that I wouldn’t usually check out. Last year they released the slasher classic, Graduation Day. I was pleasantly surprised by the film...

In 1968, commercials director George A. Romero released his groundbreaking first feature film, Night of the Living Dead. Five Dead movies and over four decades later, it’s undeniable that Romero’s body of work has left an indelible mark on the horror genre. At the very least, you’ve undoubtedly watched something influenced by Romero and you can meet the legend himself at Indianapolis’ Culture Shock con next month.
Taking place at Wyndham Indianapolis West hotel in Indianapolis, Indiana, from February 27th – March 1st, Culture Shock will feature a rare convention appearance from George A. Romero. In addition to the Godfather of Zombies, horror hounds can also look forward to seeing Malcolm McDowell, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, and a reunion of Romero’s Dawn of the Dead cast members David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott Reiniger and Gaylen Ross.
Tickets are $30 apiece for Friday, $35 for Saturday, and $30 for Sunday, with a $70 all-weekend pass also available.

A fight is breaking out in a suburban middle class home one night between a father and his ten year old son Billy. You see Stan, Billy’s father, has just found out that Billy has been reading horror comics (particularly one named Creepshow) against his wishes. Stan is furious and admonishes his son for reading such “rotten crap”. When Billy tries to tell his father that Creepshow is no worse than the girlie magazines he keeps hidden in his dresser, Stan slaps his son and calls him a snoop. Billy is soon ordered to bed in defeat where he sits nursing his still stinging cheek. “I hope you rot in hell”, Billy whispers as lightning strikes outside his window, illuminating his face in a blue glow. Moments later, after throwing the comic into the trash, Stan returns to the living room where his wife asks if maybe he was...

Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.

Taking on a classic is a gutsy move, even for an award-winning filmmaker. And when director Kimberly Peirce signed on to re-imagine Stephen King's horror classic "Carrie," about a teenage girl with telekinetic powers hellbent on revenge, she knew she had some sky-high expectations to meet.
"I'd make a joke and say, 'I didn't give a f*ck,' but of course I felt pressure!" she told us recently while doing press for "Carrie." "But I think pressure is good."
All that pressure had Peirce thinking long and hard about what it would mean to sign on to a project of this scale, with its history and existing fan base. Having made just one film, 2008's "Stop-Loss," since her 1999 directorial debut, "Boys Don't Cry," it's clear, as a filmmaker, she doesn't make decisions lightly.
"I walked into this feeling a huge responsibility, much like I did with 'Boys Don't Cry...

Wrapping up our coverage from Flashback Weekend, I have my exclusive interview session with George A. Romero. We talked about why Day of the Dead is his favorite “Dead” movie, upcoming projects, a new Day of the Dead remake, and he shared his thoughts on The Walking Dead.
Day of the Dead is a movie that seems to be steadily getting a bigger following of fans every year and I’ve heard you say that this is your personal favorite of the “Dead” films you directed. Why did you enjoy making this one over the others?
George A. Romero: When it first came out, I think everyone wanted Dawn of the Dead over again. There was some disappointment when it first came out, but that has changed now that it’s been out on video for a while. It also wasn’t distributed with any pizzazz at all initially and was almost invisible.

For those of you who got into zombies because of The Walking Dead or Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, and haven’t caught up on the earlier movies, you owe it to yourself to check out some of the classics, especially the original Dawn of the Dead.
Aside from meeting up with George A. We knew that Daily Dead readers would be interested in checking it out, so we recorded the panel and Q&A session.

Flashback Weekend is currently taking place in Chicago and we’re covering the event live. Their featured guest is George A. Romero, who introduced a screening of Night of the Living Dead last night. We recorded the introduction, which included a Q&A where Romero talks about filming Night of the Living Dead, his favorite of the “Dead” movie, and working with Universal on Land of the Dead.
Along with George A. Romero, there is a Dawn of the Dead reunion taking place with David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott H. Reiniger, and Gaylen Ross. They just wrapped up a Q&A this afternoon and we’ll have it online early next week for those that couldn’t stop by. George A. Celebrating it's 2nd decade as Chicago's largest and longest running Horror Convention, the Flashback Weekend returns to the Crowne Plaza Chicago O'Hare in Rosemont, Illinois on August 9th-11th. And FEARnet will be there as a sponsor providing some cool goodies and swags to attendees (while supplies last). On top of the usual plethora of dealers booths, special events and screenings and more, a slew of genre celebrities will be on hand for autographs including legendary director George A. There will also be a slew of cool screenings at the Muvico Theaters Rosemont 18 located right next door to the Crowne Plaze which include 'You're Next,' 'Hatchet III,' the never-before-seen lost 'Trancers' sequel 'Trancers 1.5: City Of Angels.' We're sticking with the summer camp theme for the latest installment in our ongoing slasher series; last week we visited the 1981 cult fave The Burning (which is about to receive glorious Blu-ray treatment; check out the details here), and today we're headed back to the forest to face another mangled maniac – this time the undead redneck behemoth known as “Madman Marz” – the title nemesis of Madman, released one year after The Burning at the peak of the slasher cycle. Conceived by producer Gary Sales and director Joe Giannone, Madman is actually loosely based on the same urban myth that inspired The Burning: the story of “Cropsey,” an inhuman killer who – as many a campfire tale would have it – stalks New York's Staten Island, seeking symbolic revenge for his own death and/or disfigurement. The films share much of Cropsey's DNA, all the way down to a lively retelling of...

With Halloween right around the corner, we're counting down the days by posting five fun facts about our favorite fright flicks.Today's featured film is "Dawn of the Dead" (2004).1. "Dawn of the Dead" was Zach Snyder's directorial debut. He would go on to direct blockbusters "300" and "Watchmen." He will also direct next year's highly anticipated Superman movie, "Man of Steel."2. "Dawn of the Dead" marked one of Ty Burrell's earliest film roles (see his character here). He's best known now as Phil Dunphy on the hit sitcom "Modern Family."3. The mall scenes were shot at Thornhill Square Shopping Center in Thornhill, Ontario. The mall was already defunct, which made it easier to shoot in. It was demolished after filming was completed.4. Starbucks refused to be let its brand be used. The mall coffee shop was named Hallowed Grounds. The department store Gaylen Ross was named after one of the...

As an ongoing tradition of What Culture, many different films have been put forward as contenders for the coveted title of greatest film of all time.
In the past there’s been passionate arguments for such classic films as Star Wars, Psycho, Back To The Future and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. However, while these films frequently turn up in polls and lists of the greatest films of all time, it’s now time to put forward a horror masterpiece which has rarely been given the same kind of limelight.
Alongside my two other favourite films of all time (Jaws & The Good, The Bad and the Ugly) George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead is one of the rare films which I can constantly enjoy watching over and over. Few other films within the horror genre are as interesting, thought-provoking and relentlessly exciting as Romero’s zombie masterpiece.
