Halloween II and III are the first releases from Shout! Factory’s upcoming Scream Factory line of horror titles. They will be released to Blu-ray/DVD on September 18th and we have multiple clips from both movies, along with the original trailers.
“Picking up exactly where the first film left off, Halloween II follows the same ill-fated characters as they once again encounter the knife-wielding maniac they thought they had left for dead. It seems the inhuman Michael Myers is still very much alive and out for more revenge as he stalks the deserted halls of the Haddonfield Memorial Hospital. As he gets closer to his main target, Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence) discovers the chilling mystery behind the crazed psychopath’s actions.
Written by John Carpenter and Debra Hill, Halloween II is a spine-tingling dark ride into the scariest night of the year.”

When I was growing up in Texas, there was a channel that showed the most outrageous horror films, and the majority of the time, they were even uncensored. The problem is, as you grow older, it becomes increasingly harder and harder to find these films. For a nostalgia buff like myself, this is criminal. Fortunately, for myself and I’m certain many others, there’s Scream Factory, the new horror based off-shoot of the great label, Shout Factory.
So, it’s with great pleasure that we announce that on September 18, 2012, Shout! Factory is releasing Halloween II Collector’s Edition and Halloween III: Season of the Witch 30th Anniversary Special Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray and DVD. These two films have long been unavailable on home video and frankly, now’s the time to buy! They’ll be releasing tins of titles over the next couple of months, like They Live...

It's a wrap, as In Contention's Kris Tapley and I analyze Sunday night's Oscar show winners and losers (below). Co-host Anne Hathaway came out ahead of James Franco, who seemed to be either too tired or too bored to do more than phone it in between tweets. (Caryn James' review is here.) Maybe he really was more comfortable at the Spirit Awards. Franco and Hathaway both shined--along with Alec Baldwin and Morgan Freeman--in the hilarious opening short directed by Troy Miller, including Hathaway's shedding brown duck outfit by costume designer Jane Ruhm. Kris and I also cover the Oscar party circuit, and both vote the Weinsteins' Saturday night Soho House bash the best of the lot, although the Governor's Ball came close. We'll be taking a hiatus until the Cannes Film Fest in May. Life has a great Oscar night photo gallery. The Guardian has some good Oscar video.

Paul Bartel was always one of my fave New World directors--he's one of the less-well-known grads of the Corman school, including James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme, Allan Arkush, Joe Dante, Ron Howard and Peter Bogdanovich. It's always a hoot hearing folks talk about what it was like to work there. Quentin Tarantino's tribute to New World chief Roger Corman was a highlight of last year's Academy governors' ball. Shout!Factory has just released a DVD of Bartel's B-classic, Death Race 2000. And on the extras, lo and behold, along with Leonard Maltin's interview with Corman (Bartel, alas, died some years ago), is my old chum Jane Ruhm, who got her start as a costume designer on the 1975 film. Her story of how David Carradine reduced ...

When thinking of classic B-movies, the conversation must start and stop with not only Roger Corman, but the seminal sci-fi cult masterpiece, Death Race 2000.
Not only has the film become fodder for a rather turgid Paul W.S. Anderson (and I stress the W.S., not Thomas, there is indeed a massive difference) remake, and a recently announced direct to DVD sequel, but it has seemingly been lost to history, as outside of the film world, its name isn’t quite as well known as it damn well should be.
However, Shout Factory, with their new release of the film, is looking to change all of that. For the most part, they definitely succeed, as this is an interesting, albeit a mixed bag, DVD.
Personally, this is one of my all-time favorite films. It’s not in my “top 10” or anything like that, but if I want to sit down,...
