Louis Gossett Jr., who was the first Black man to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, has died. He was 87.
(Sidney Poitier was the first Black man to win an acting Oscar. His win, in 1964, was as the lead in “Lilies of the Field.”)
Gossett won the Academy Award for his role as Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Emil Foley, Richard Gere’s hardcore drill instructor in 1982 film “An Officer and a Gentleman.” He was just the third Black actor to receive a nomination in the category. Gossett won a Golden Globe for the role as well.
In 2023, Gossett appeared in the remake of “The Color Purple,” as well as in a pair of episodes of BET+ original series “Kingdom Business.” The same year, he lent his voice to an uncredited part of Michael Jai White’s “Outlaw Johnny Black.”

Nearly a year and a half ago, the late Sacheen Littlefeather became the face of Native identity fraud when skepticism about her background was publicized shortly after her death in October 2022. Now, one of her friends and former associates has come forward with genealogical records that indicate the activist best known for refusing Marlon Brando’s 1973 Oscar on his behalf may have had Indigenous ancestry after all.
Gayle Anne Kelley, whom Littlefeather first approached to produce her 2018 documentary short Sacheen: Breaking the Silence, commissioned a private investigator to look into Littlefeather’s background after Native independent journalist Jacqueline Keeler (Diné/Dakota) published an explosive report in the San Francisco Chronicle alleging that she was not Apache and Yaqui on her father’s side, as she had claimed, but rather Mexican. (That her mother’s side is white has never been disputed.)

Joining me in the Apple Original Films portion of Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees were several Oscar nominees for Martin Scorsese’s epic Western Killers of the Flower Moon, and since the film has been nominated for a whopping 10 Academy Awards it was a good cross-section of artisans who made this very big film come to life.
The panelists included cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, production designer Jack Fisk, set decorator Adam Willis, producer Daniel Lupi and Original Song nominee for “Wahzhazhe ( A Song for My People)” Scott George.
Lupi, a multiple past Oscar nominee, was tasked with helping bring the production the kind of authenticity that can only happen if it is shot where the true story really happened. “When I got involved, the film was always going to be shot in the Osage Nation. There was never a doubt that that’s where we were going to go,” he said.

Following the nominations for the 2024 Academy Awards on Tuesday, Lily Gladstone, Martin Scorsese and Emma Stone were among the stars and films setting new records or carving out their own unique place in Oscar history.
Gladstone achieved a historic nomination, with the Killers of the Flower Moon star paving a new path for Native American women in the lead actress category. Meanwhile adding to his list of accolades, Scorsese has surpassed Steven Spielberg with having the most best direction nominations and, at 81, is also recognized as the oldest directing nominee. Then, Emma Stone is going into the race eyeing two possible Oscar wins for Poor Things, with both nominations making history as she follows in the footsteps of Frances McDormand’s Nomadland Oscars wins.

Peter Schickele, whose comedic parodies of classical music overshadowed his own strengths as a serious composer, died Tuesday at his home in Bearsville, N.Y. at 88. His daughter confirmed the death and attributed it to a series of infections that damaged his health.
Schickele won the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album four years in a row from 1990-1994. He also won in 2000 for Best Classical Crossover album.
The composer aimed at breaking down the stuffiness of classical music in the grand tradition of Victor Borge, His compositions included the No-No Nonette, the cantata Iphigenia in Brooklyn, the Unbegun Symphony, and Pervertimento for Bagpipes, Bicycle and Balloons, among other titles.
Schickele claimed to be the discoverer of 18th-century composer P.D.Q. Bach, the son of Johann Sebastian Bach, “the last and by far the least” of his 20 children. Schickele claimed to have made several unusual discoveries of P.D.Q. Bach works,...

Buffy Sainte-Marie is addressing the claims made in CBC’s The Fifth Estate that she has been fraudulently posing as a Native American over the course of her 60-year career.
The documentary episode on the Canadian network series included interviews with Sainte-Marie’s family members who she says she doesn’t know and a birth certificate of hers that she has never seen before.
In a lengthy statement, the first Indigenous Oscar winner noted that the network relied on a story fabricated by her childhood abuser and brother, Alan, and two members of her estranged family that she doesn’t know.
“This has been incredibly re-traumatizing for me and unfair to all involved,” she said. “It hurts me deeply to discover that my estranged family grew up scared of me and thinking these lies because of a letter I sent intended to protect me from further abuse from my brother.

A detailed investigation by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has raised questions about the indigenous persona of singer/songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie.
Sainte-Marie has been feted as the first Indigenous person to win an Academy Award for cowriting the song Up Where We Belong for the film An Officer and a Gentleman.
Sainte-Marie, 82, has claimed that she was born on Tribal land and adopted by white parents. The CBC countered that in a report published Friday and in an accompanying episode of the documentary series The Fifth Estate. The media outlet obtained a birth certificate saying Sainte-Marie was born to parents of European ancestry in Massachusetts.
The CBC reported that the birth certificate from Stoneham, Mass. showed “Beverly Jean Santamaria” and her parents listed as white. The CBC said it had the document authenticated by Stoneham town clerk Maria Sagarino.
Sainte-Marie, alerted to the revelations that would be coming, issued a statement posted to social media Thursday.

CBC newsmagazine The Fifth Estate has aired its Buffy Sainte-Marie exposé.
The hourlong documentary episode, presented by senior investigative reporter Geoff Leo, alleges that the singer-songwriter — considered the first Indigenous winner of an Academy Award — has been fraudulently posing as Native throughout her 60-year career.
While the specifics about Sainte-Marie’s background varied as they appeared in articles and other materials over the years — The Fifth Estate found news clippings referring to her as Algonquin, Mi’kmaq and Cree — eventually her accepted (and authorized) biography was that she was born in 1941 on Cree land in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan and removed from her birth family and adopted by a white American family, the Sainte-Maries, as part of a government policy known as the Sixties Scoop. Later, as a young adult, she reconnected with the Cree people and was adopted by descendants of Chief Piapot according to Cree ways.

Buffy Sainte-Marie has released a statement defending her Indigenous heritage, a move that appears to be in response to upcoming documentary that is expected to raise questions about the subject.
The musician and activist — who became the first Indigenous person to win an Oscar for her musical contribution to the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman — appears to be the subject of an upcoming episode of the Canadian television series The Fifth Estate. Out October 27th, the episode description says “an icon’s claims to Indigenous ancestry are being called into question by family members and an investigation that included genealogical documentation, historical research and personal accounts.”
The description does not mention Sainte-Marie by name, but the artist released a statement about the episode, claiming that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation contacted her “to question my identity and the sexual assault I experienced as a child.”

A year ago this week, accusations surfaced in the media that the late Sacheen Littlefeather, best known for representing Marlon Brando on the Oscars stage in protest of the treatment of Native Americans, had fabricated her Native heritage.
Now Buffy Sainte-Marie, considered to be the first Indigenous Oscar winner (for co-writing the pop standard “Up Where We Belong” from 1982’s An Officer and a Gentleman), is facing similar allegations.
On Friday, the CBC newsmagazine The Fifth Estate is expected to air a documentary digging into the singer-songwriter’s roots. The episode description — the second of the 49th season of the Canadian public broadcaster’s long-running series — does not name the “icon” whose Indigenous ancestry is under investigation, but Sainte-Marie has preemptively come forward a day early to defend what she calls “[her] truth as [she] knows it.”

You may have noticed that there’s been a lot of talk about Lily Gladstone and her Indigenous heritage and what that fact will mean for her chances in the Academy Award Best Actress race as her epic feature “Killers of the Flower Moon” from director Martin Scorsese preps for liftoff in wide theatrical release this Friday (October 20). Gladstone is running a solid second place behind Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) in the Gold Derby combined Oscar odds for her much-praised performance as Osage Nation member Mollie Burkhart in the tragic fact-based saga.
Gladstone herself is of Blackfeet and Nimiipuu heritage and raised on a Blackfeet Nation reservation in Montana. One would presume this fact won’t work against the actress in 2024 as it might have in, say, 1954 or even ’74. And in fact it was only earlier this year that Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian actress to win Best Actress...

A genius South Korean lawyer with very poor social skills, Wonder Woman star Connie Nielsen as Danish writer Karen Blixen, Martin Freeman as a cop on the edge, and those foul-mouthed Derry Girls are among the nominees for this year’s International Emmy awards, which were announced today by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The 56 nominees span 20 countries and six continents.
Best drama contenders include South Korea’s Extraordinary Attorney Woo, featuring Park Eun-bin as an autistic rookie female lawyer with a genius Iq; the German period drama The Empress, British thriller The Devil’s Hour starring Peter Capaldi; and Yosi, the Regretful Spy, a historic thriller from Argentina, another Amazon production. Canadian folk icon Buffy Sainte-Marie has announced her retirement from live performances.
The 82-year-old singer-songwriter attributed the decision to a “combination of contributing factors including travel-induced health concerns and performance-inhibiting physical challenges.”
“I have made the difficult decision to pull out of all scheduled performances in the foreseeable future,” Sainte-Marie said in a statement. “Arthritic hands and a recent shoulder injury have made it no longer possible to perform to my standards. Sincere regrets to all my fans and family, my band and the support teams that make it all possible.”
The Oscar- and Polaris Prize-winning artist released her most recent album, Medicine Songs, in 2017. Last year, she was the subject of a documentary called Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On, which is currently streaming on PBS’s website.

One of the things we love most about the dark Showtime series “Yellowjackets” is all the fantastic ’90s music. Half of the show takes place in 1996, when high school girls’ soccer team crash lands in the wilderness and half is set 25 years later, with the still traumatized adult survivors.
Season 2 features an exclusive track by Florence + the Machine, an eerie cover of No Doubt’s “Just a Girl,” Sharon Van Etten’s “Seventeen,” and such ’90s feminist icons as Tori Amos.
And of course, we love the kind of creepy main title theme, “No Return,” by Craig Wedren and Anna Waronker. The opening credits from Season 1 teased some of the things we would see unfold, and the updated Season 2 credits sequence also gives us hints at what we’ll see in upcoming episodes.

The Tragically Hip’s Surviving Members Reunite to Pay Tribute to a Canadian Icon, Tease New Projects
When the Tragically Hip played their final show on Aug. 20, 2016, at the sold-out Rogers K-Rock Centre in the group’s native Kingston, Ontario, bassist Gord Sinclair stood onstage in awe of the moment — wondering what the future held for the larger-than-life Canadian rock band.
“There was a deep connection with the people, and as we progressed on that last tour, [lead singer Gord Downie] got stronger and stronger. By the time it got to the last show, it was just like, ‘We should be playing more,’” Sinclair tells Rolling Stone. “It was the audience,...

On the stage at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, Harry Styles is a bonafide rockstar, brimming with swagger and self confidence as he performs in front of 20,000 adoring fans. But Styles, the actor, was soft-spoken while accepting an acting award for one of his first major movie roles at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
Styles — a man of relatively few words — and the cast of “My Policeman” received the ensemble award at the festival’s Tribute Awards on Sunday night.
“Thank you so much to everyone here, on behalf of all of us, for this wonderful, wonderful award,” said Styles, who stars in the romantic drama as a closeted police officer. “We all loved working on this film so much. And we hope you enjoy it.”

From icons and industry veterans to emerging directors and new faces, the stories and creative power of Indigenous women are featured at the 2022 Toronto festival.

The museum held a virtual tour for media Wednesday to discuss the programming and museum’s progress, hosted by Academy governor Laura Dern.
Throughout the presentation, Academy spokespersons emphasized the inclusion of a diverse array of filmmakers and artisans from the U.S. and around the world. The museum will not ignore the industry’s blindspots, the presentation emphasized.

In 1968, America was embroiled in protests over civil rights and the Vietnam War. In that tumultuous time, “The Tonight Show” host Johnny Carson turned over hosting duties for an entire week to actor and activist Harry Belafonte. His cast of guests included Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy, just months before they were assassinated, during a week that’s been mostly lost in American history. Thankfully it’s now being revisited in a new Peacock documentary, executive produced by MSNBC host Joy Reid and directed by award-winning filmmaker Yoruba Richen, aptly titled “The Sit-In: Harry Belafonte Hosts The Tonight Show.”

Del Barber has had a strange few years. After releasing what could have been his career-making opus, Prairieography, in 2014, the Canadian singer-songwriter moved from Winnipeg to a farm in rural Manitoba. For his anticipated follow-up album, Barber decided to release a novelty record of hockey-themed cover songs under the moniker Del Barber and the Regretsky’s, which he then refused to promote. Not long after, both his manager and his record label — the Canadian indie mainstay True North Records — dropped him.

And consisting of Amanda Shires, Maren Morris, Natalie Hemby and Brandi Carlile, country music supergroup the Highwomen made a stunning live debut at the Quad stage on Friday — then on Saturday, an encore.

Singer-songwriter Tami Neilson offers a swaggering celebration of womanhood in her new “Big Boss Mama” video, released as International Women’s Day is being observed around the globe.

‘Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World’: The Unknown Story of Native American Roots in American MusicThis an amazing feature documentary which reveals so much in the way of our American cultural history that it’s almost difficult to sum up.American society and the settlement and development of the nation’s land was built on two great evils against humanity.
First was the enslavement for their labor and resulting early deaths and murders of tens of millions of Africans.
The second was the slaughter of millions of indigenous peoples and the simultaneous and subsequent land robbing by European new comers. These peoples had inhabited and still do inhabit the U.S. continent long before any Europeans arrived.
Often the survivors of these massacres tried to blend into society and hide their ethnic roots. Often the children were abducted from their family and taken to far away institutions and...
