Former French Culture Minister Frédéric Mitterrand, who was a high-profile and sometimes controversial figure on France’s cultural scene, died on Thursday at the age of 76, his family announced.
Born in Paris in 1947 to a well-to-do family, Mitterrand was the nephew of President François Mitterrand.
His many activities across half a century included teacher, arthouse cinema owner, cinema and culture commentator, TV presenter, producer and documentary-maker.
He first gained notoriety on France’s cultural scene as the owner of the bohemian arthouse cinema L’Olympic in Paris’ then down-at-heel 14th arrondissement.
After a brief time as a geography and history teacher, he acquired the theater in 1971 at the age of 22 with the help of a loan from the father of one of his former pupils.
It took on a folkloric status for its mixed clientele of locals, cinephiles, neighborhood hoodlums, drag queens and the occasional film star and auteur director of the time.

A week after being appointed culture minister and slammed by an avalanche of criticism, famed politician Rachida Dati has officially entered the ring.
Dati went off-script and delivered an unfiltered speech — starting with “I’m not asking you to love me, what I want is to convince you” — to a room full of film and TV players on Thursday evening during a ceremony honoring actor Melvil Poupaud, who received the French Cinema Award.
While on stage, Dati said she will strive to democratize culture during her tenure.
“Culture in schools and civic sense go hand-in-hand. When you look at schools in certain areas which are ridden with problems, you’ll notice that it’s often places where culture has taken a backseat,” she said. Dati also spoke about her own relationship with culture, admitting she saw a movie in a cinema for the first time at the age of 21 but...

This week’s surprise news of conservative politician Rachida Dati becoming France’s new Culture Minister provoked an earthquake within the country’s predominantly left-leaning film and TV industry.
Dati was appointed on Jan. 11 to succeed Rima Abdul Malak as Culture Minister as part of a reshuffle of France’s President Emmanuel Macron, which also saw 34-year-old Gabriel Attal becoming Prime Minister.
A combative straight shooter with an acerbic of humor and a definite sense of style, Dati is currently mayor of the posh 7th arrondissement where she regularly mingles with stars residing in the neighborhood. But her appointment as Culture Minister was welcomed with vitriolic headlines across the media and was called out by a large chunk of the film and TV biz as a casting error. The high profile politician is seen as a potential threat to the industry’s unique model of “cultural exception,” where independent, diverse filmmaking is nurtured through subsidies,...

Has #MeToo Finally Arrived in France?
Watershed: The past week has felt like a watershed moment for the #MeToo movement in France. The country’s film industry has been at the forefront of efforts to foster gender parity thanks to pioneering activist group Le Collectif 50/50 and initiatives such as the festival charter, along with extra state funding for movies hiring women for key crew positions. However, a culture of silence around allegations of sexual abuse by big figures such as Roman Polanski and Gérard Depardieu has long been a source of debate and consternation in and outside of the country. There are signs that a major shift is underway following a bombshell...

Newly appointed French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal took France’s political and media spheres by surprise on Thursday as he named controversial politician Rachida Dati as his culture minister.
Her arrival in the new-look centrist cabinet was unexpected given that Dati was a spokesperson for centre-right President Nicolas Sarkozy during his presidential campaign and was Justice Minister from 2007 to 2009 under his presidency.
The appointment was made as part of a government cabinet reshuffle rolled out by Attal just two days after he became France’s youngest ever prime minister in a move by President Emmanuel Macron to reboot his presidency, which began with a centre-left mandate but is now moving the dial to the right.
Dati replaces Rima Abdul Malak whose position has been looking fragile in recent weeks after she found herself at odds with Macron over her suggestion that Gérard Depardieu should be stripped of his Legion Of...

Brigitte Bardot, 88, is recovering after first responders rushed to her house last month when she suffered from breathing problems.
Her husband, Bernard d’Ormale, called the ambulance while the couple was in their home in Saint-Tropez. He shared the incident with the public explaining that the heat wave in France caused the incident. He characterized it as “a moment of respiratory distraction,” to the local news outlet Var-matin.
He additionally stated that the “ambulances got the wrong address” causing a delay in her care.
First responders gave Bardot oxygen to help normalize her breathing and watched her before they left.
Bardot is well-known for acting in the films The Bear and the Doll, Plucking the Daisy, The Night Heaven Fell, The Truth and Contempt. She acted until her 40th birthday in 1973 when she announced her retirement.
Since then, Bardot has become an animal activist, although some of her actions have been deemed controversial.

As a female union rep in the oppressively male-dominated French nuclear industry, Maureen Kearney — the real-life heroine of Jean-Paul Salomé’s “La Syndicaliste” (“The Sitting Duck” in the U.K.) — is accustomed to keeping a cool head in a crisis. That doesn’t stop her male superiors from accusing her of the opposite, with then-President Nicolas Sarkozy allegedly branding her a “hysteric in a skirt”: In this men’s club, a woman’s mere presence is deemed her weakness. Yet when Kearney is raped and mutilated by unknown assailants, seemingly as a professional warning, it’s her lack of hysteria under the circumstances that is declared suspicious by men in power. As she’s first disbelieved, then charged without outright fabrication, Salomé’s film pivots from itchy whistleblower thriller to irate courtroom drama, with institutional misogyny as its binding thread.

Along with Alice Diop’s Saint Omer, which won Venice’s Silver Lion last year, and Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, premiering in Cannes’ main competition next week, Cédric Kahn’s The Goldman Case marks a recent trend of arthouse courtroom dramas that, beyond a few exceptions (such as Henri-George Clouzot’s seldom seen masterpiece, The Truth), have never been a major facet of French cinema.
This is because French trials, unlike American ones, tend to be less dramatic, with fewer rulings by jury (outside of murder cases) and with the judge playing a larger role in the proceedings, reviewing facts and statements in a dry manner. However, there have been a number of highly headline-grabbing trials in France these past years, including that of former President Nicolas Sarkozy for election fraud charges, and another concerning the November 13 terrorist attacks, which have brought the courtroom back into the public sphere.

It was 1941. Though World War II was already under way, film production was in full swing at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank.
Humphrey Bogart was getting ready to shoot “The Maltese Falcon,” while the next year, “Casablanca” would film on Warners soundstages and at the nearby Van Nuys airport, subbing for Morocco. Bette Davis was making “Now Voyager” on the lot after location visits to Lake Arrowhead and Laguna Beach.
At the Warner Bros. Café, the studio’s commissary on the Burbank lot, James Cagney and Rita Hayworth lunched with director Raoul Walsh, while actor and future president Ronald Reagan dined with Olivia de Havilland — just a few of the major stars and filmmakers who could be seen taking a break from the hard work of filming.

You have to feel for Léa Seydoux, the star who was slated to be the all-but-official face of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, with four vehicles in the official selection. Covid intervened, preventing her representing any of them in person. But the one she’s best in was also the lowest-profile.
Placed out of competition in the new Premieres sidebar, Arnaud Desplechin’s “Deception” is a strange, stifling but frequently intriguing attempt to find a cinematic match for the literary voice of Philip Roth, from his autofictional 1990 novel of the same name. It often succeeds, which is to say the filmmaking often appropriates the self-aggrandizing indulgences and knowingly oppressive masculinity of a work that isn’t among the author’s finest. But it’s Seydoux’s sly, bright presence, as an obscure object of desire who gradually places the protagonist’s failings in relief, that keeps us involved.

Night Shift stars, from left, Grégory Gadebois, Virginie Efira and Omar Sy. Anne Fontaine: 'It was exciting to create this tension and closeness in intimate proximity' Photo: UniFrance In many ways, screenwriter and director Anne Fontaine so far has had what could be described as a “good” pandemic. Her second last film Night Shift (Police) escaped lockdown disruption, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival last year and, in a brief window of opportunity, managed to come out on release in French cinemas. Meanwhile Fontaine used her enforced confinement to write her 18th feature, which wrapped shooting by the end of November and now is in post-production.
The new film kept her sane because it’s an unabashed comedy about what happens when two former Presidents (based on François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy) meet up in the wilds of the rural region of Corréze to discuss a strategy for a comeback and regaining the limelight.

On Monday’s “The View,” Joy Behar reacted to the news of Trump’s Cpac speech, where he hinted that he was still considering a 2024 run for presidency.
“I don’t think that he will run again in 2024, unless he does it from Rikers Island,” Behar snarked, bringing up former French president Nicolas Sarkozy who was recently convicted and arrested and put on house arrest. “There’s a precedent already set in the world. It’s not like, oh, we can’t imagine a former president under arrest…yes, we can.”
Behar admitted she didn’t watch the event “because I know what they do” but went on to point out that “Cpac is perfect because C stands for cult and I’ve never seen people working so hard to worship the god that is Donald Trump.”

Nicolas Sarkozy, who served as French president between 2007 and 2012, has been found guilty of corruption.
He was given a three-year jail term, with two suspended. However, he will be allowed to serve the term under house arrest, wearing an electronic tag. His former lawyer Thierry Herzog and magistrate Gilbert Azibert received the same sentences.
Sarkozy has been convicted of trying to bribe Azibert by offering him a prestigious job in return for information about a criminal enquiry into his party.
The former president is expected to appeal the verdict. He is also facing a separate trial into alleged fraudulent overspending during his 2012 re-election campaign.

The Cannes Film Festival is going forward with its decision to award an honorary Palme d’Or to Alain Delon despite criticism from the U.S. organization Women and Hollywood over comments that the veteran French actor has made about slapping women, opposing the adoption of children by same-sex parents and supporting the rise of the far right in France.
Following Cannes’ April 17 announcement of the honor, Women and Hollywood founder Melissa Silverstein said she was “extremely disappointed” that Cannes would honor someone who held such “abhorrent values.” In a tweet, Silverstein said Delon “has publicly admitted to slapping women. Isabelle Adjani and Vincent Cassel star in a carnivalesque romp peopled by the chancers and artful dodgers of France’s immigrant underclass
Romain Gavras is no political firebrand like his father, Costa-Gavras. But there is something faintly political in his decision to make what former French president Nicolas Sarkozy called la racaille (“scum”)– the outsiders, chancers and artful dodgers from the country’s immigrant underclass – so unrepentantly the heroes of his second film, a brash and jubilant Guy Ritchie-style crime caper.
Karim Leklou stars as Farès, a schlubby small-time dealer looking to go straight by acquiring the Mr Freeze ice-pops franchise in Morocco. When he finds out that his mother (a brazen Isabelle Adjani) has gambled away the savings needed to close the deal, he’s forced to lead a Benidorm drugs run for Putin, the new drug lord on the block.

French actress Brigitte Bardot has spoken out against the #MeToo movement, calling women who have exposed sexual harassment in Hollywood “hypocritical, ridiculous and uninteresting.”
In an interview with French magazine Paris Match, Bardot said women are only harming themselves by speaking out against sexual harassment.

“The vast majority are being hypocritical and ridiculous,” Bardot, 83, added.

The L’Oréal heiress, whose last years have been embroiled in scandals and a legal battle concerning her $44 billion fortune, passed “peacefully in her sleep,” according to a statement released by her family.

The singer and former first lady of France made headlines in 1991 when Bruni — then known as an internationally famous supermodel — was named as the reason Trump was splitting from second wife Marla Maples. Image Source: Getty / James Devaney Mary-Kate Olsen is a notoriously private person, especially when it comes to her relationship with Olivier Sarkozy. Since marrying the 47-year-old half-brother of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the 30-year-old fashion designer has been pretty tight-lipped about her romance, only briefly mentioning him once during an interview with The Edit. While the two certainly shy away from talking about each other to the press, they have been known to show Pda from time to time when they attend sporting events. If you're curious to know more about them, we've gathered a few interesting details about their relationship below. 1. They Dated For 3 Years Before Tying the Knot Despite their 17-year age gap, the two began dating in 2012 after meeting at a party. Mary-Kate - who was 25 at the time - had reportedly been complaining about "boys not being mature enough for her," and after just one month together,...

Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy tied the knot in November 2015, but it is only recently that the fashion designer has opened up about her relationship. During an interview with The Edit, Mary-Kate spoke about married life with the 47-year-old half-brother of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, saying, "We don't need so much time to sit and think and ponder. But then I have a husband, two stepkids and a life; I have to go home and cook dinner. I run on the weekend." So how did they first cross paths? Well, it's quite simple, actually - they met at party in April 2012. Mary-Kate - who was 25 at the time - had reportedly been complaining "about boys not being mature enough for her," and after just one month of dating, the two were "head over heels" for each other. Mary-Kate and Olivier got engaged in February 2014, and over a year later,...

Fred Nicolas’ debut about two female friends on the fringes of French society displays a languorous confidence that bypasses cliche
It’s good to see the fringes of French society once branded as la racaille (scum) by Nicolas Sarkozy getting detailed consideration: not just in alarmist frontline bulletins like La Haine, but in convention-breaking arthouse fare like Céline Sciamma’s Girlhood and, the ultimate sign of changing times, cheesy mainstream guff like Intouchables. Fred Nicolas’ debut Max & Lenny, like Girlhood a story about female friendship, falls into the second camp – though sparkling Mediterranean azure and super-heated concrete of the Marseille projects give his film an unfamiliar backdrop.
Lenny (Camélia Pand’or) is a disaffected 17-year-old member of Marseille’s underclass, separated from her infant daughter by social services, forced to serve as lookout for her brother’s drug-dealing operation. But for her “music is life”. Trudging tomboyishly around the city...

The “Crazy in Love” singer and her “No Church in the Wild” rapper beau showed up at the UEFA Champions League match between Paris Saint-Germain Fc and Fc Barcelona at Parc Des Princes in Paris where they sat next to Golden Balls and chatted throughout the evening.
Also in the house was former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who kept cracking up at all of Jay’s jokes.
In the end, it seemed that Paris Saint-Germain benefitted from Becks’ presence (he used to play for the team) as they topped Barcelona 3-2.
