It was back in 2018 that Syfy pulled the plug on The Asylum-produced zombie series “Z Nation,” ending the show after five seasons. But it seems “Z Nation” might be coming back…
The Asylum took to Twitter last night to tweet out a graphic promising a “major announcement soon” from the world of “Z Nation,” noting that the show’s “brief break” is almost over.
Created by Karl Schaefer and Craig Engler, “Z Nation” was originally launched in 2014, with 68 total episodes airing across the five seasons that came to an end back in 2018.
Syfy’s “Z Nation,” the show’s Wikipedia page reminds, “begins three years into a zombie apocalypse caused by a virus that has already killed most humans. The series revolves around the travels of a small group of survivors being led through the apocalypse.”
The zombie series “Black Summer” is part of the “Z Nation” universe as well,...

The intense zombie series “Black Summer” returned to Netflix for its second season on June 17, 2021, but it’s now been nearly three years since we last heard a peep from the series.
So what’s the deal? Is “Black Summer” Season 3 ever going to bite its way onto Netflix? Well, a report from What’s on Netflix this week suggests the series has been cancelled.
The site reports, “Black Summer was expected to have been ghost-canceled last year, but finally, we’ve got confirmation that the series won’t be returning for a third outing on Netflix.”
This news comes as no big surprise, as series creator John Hyams (Sick) had responded to a tweet back in April 2023 with a simple “Sadly, nah,” when asked if “Black Summer” Season 3 was ever going to happen. It seems the final nail has now been hammered in.

I think 1991 shaped my life before I even realized it did. Aeon Flux, Pete & Pete, Clarissa Explains It All, Liquid Television, The Addams Family, People Under the Stairs, Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, and of course, Eerie, Indiana.
All those shows and movies I just mentioned, I can still enjoy just the same as I did then. A few of them actually get repeat viewings throughout the year. There was something cool about these shows made for kids and teens around this time– they weren’t dumbing it down. “Black Summer” has been renewed for Season 2 at Netflix, the streaming service announced on Wednesday.
The series, which stars Jaime King, is a prequel to Syfy’s now-ended “Z Nation,” which premiered in April with its eight-episode first season.
“Black Summer” followers survivors of a cataclysmic event who contend with zombies — and each other — to reach a military evacuation site. King stars as Rose, a mother, torn from her daughter, who embarks upon a harrowing journey, stopping at nothing to find her. Thrust alongside a small group of American refugees, she must brave a hostile new world and make brutal decisions during the most deadly summer of a zombie apocalypse.

As Bananarama would say, it's a "cruel, cruel summer" in the early days of the zombie apocalypse in the official trailer for Black Summer, a prequel series that takes place in the same living dead universe as Z Nation.
Co-created by Karl Schaefer and John Hyams, all eight episodes of the first season of Black Summer will premiere on Netflix on April 11th.
Although Black Summer takes place in the same world as Z Nation, the tone of the new series looks to be decidedly more dark than the horror comedy style of its predecessor, and you can get a taste of what to expect in the official trailer below.
"A prequel set in the Z Nation universe, Black Summer is a new series introducing all new characters from every walk of life. Jamie King (Hart of Dixie) stars as a mother, torn from her daughter, who embarks upon a harrowing journey,...

Netflix is getting into the zombie apocalypse TV genre with Black Summer, a more serious offering from the makers of Z Nation.
Black Summer is coming to Netflix, offering a more dramatic and intense take on the zombie apocalypse genre; an idea seemingly contradictory to series production company The Asylum, which was responsible for Syfy’s schlocky serial take on the genre, Z Nation, which was recently canceled after five seasons. Yet, with the genre still spear-headed by AMC’s ratings-declining (but still potent) The Walking Dead, the onus on this new series will be to prove that zombies aren’t passé.
Indeed, Black Summer is the creation of Z Nation co-creator/executive producer Karl Schaefer and the Syfy show's co-executive producer, John Hyams, with both serving as showrunners and writers. The project was given a straight-to-series order for eight episodes back in July 2018.

SyFy has canceled zombie drama Z Nation, according to producer David Michael Latt, who posted a Twitter video announcing the decision.
Z Nation will end with its fifth season. The drama concerns a band of zombie apocalypse survivors attempting to get a man who has an immunity to the virus causing the zombie explosion to the last-known Center for Disease Control research lab in California.
“We wanted to tell you face to face… that we were not renewed for Season 6,” Latt said in a late-night Periscope video on Friday. “We’re stopping at Season 5. We’re very sad, but we’re also really grateful with the opportunities that we had on the show.
“This is not the end of anything,” Latt said. “This is just the beginning of a lot of things.” i
Z Nation was created by Karl Schaefer and Craig Engler and produced by The Asylum. The show premiered in 2014 with 13 episodes.

Z Nation is getting a spinoff!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has placed an order for a new series set in the world of the popular zombie drama.
The series will be titled Black Summer and will span eight episodes on the streaming platform. As you likely already know, Z Nation airs on Syfy in the U.S.
However, Netflix holds the streaming rights to the series, and the numbers must have been decent to pull the trigger on a spinoff.
It's certainly a different way of doing business. There's no telling whether Syfy wanted the series to air there first, before going to Netflix in a similar fashion to the way the business model for Z Nation works.

With such an enormous boom in zombie fiction, it is understandable that many people met the Z Nation previews with an eye-roll. When something has become a cliché, it will always present the opportunity for a project in that vein to either bring new light to the tired theme or mock a storyline that has been done to death. Syfy’s Z Nation is not bringing anything new to the table, but with such hilarious lines obviously poking fun at the genre as, “God, I hate moral dilemmas!” it is easy to see how this show could be entertaining.
Three years into the apocalypse, a diverse group of survivors meet and become allies with Mark Hammond, a government soldier who is transferring a man who is immune to the zombie virus.

If a step-by-step guide were written for how to create a standard zombie narrative, it would be titled "Z Nation." Start with one part outbreak footage, and mix in some overlapping audio clips of news regarding said outbreak.
Simmer it in a stock of basic characters with one part brown-haired stubbly leader, one part love interest, two parts mysterious drifters with unexplained combat prowess, and three parts uninteresting zombie chow to beef up the cast.
Marinade in a standard post-apocalyptic world, equal parts towns trying to make it and traveling caravans with dubious intent. Bake for 45 minutes in standard character dilemmas, adding in a mission to cure the virus for some longevity. Garnish with dialogue.
I try not to be too critical of things for being standard. I can’t expect everyone watching something to have the same breadth of exposure as I do, and in my experience there’s...

Syfy hopes to take a page from AMC's The Walking Dead and find ratings gold with its new zombie drama Z Nation. Z Nation, picked up straight to series, hails from Eureka producer Karl Schaefer and centers on the struggle to save humanity after a zombie apocalypse. While AMC's ratings juggernaut focuses on rebuilding humanity rather than finding a cure for the mysterious outbreak. The AMC series is adapted from Robert Kirkman's graphic novels, with the creator never interested in making his show or comic about finding a cure or explaining the origin of the outbreak. Syfy is doing well with its original series, and coming off the back of the popularity, and general awesomeness, of Helix, the network has announced two more series are coming your way.
With zombies now taking over the top spot in the ever-changing monster popularity consciousness, it’s no surprise that we’re getting another series focusing on the undead. Syfy‘s spin is Z Nation, and rather than kicking off with the appearance of the zombies, this one starts years after our zombie plague has already gutted most of humanity. Apparently, when someone immune to the plague finally turns up, we embark upon a quest to reach the other side of the country to hopefully make use of his blood in creating a cure.
There aren’t a lot of details yet, and this is one that will live or die by its cast, but it could be an...
