It’s a solemn command from Firebrand’s first assistant director Lydia Currie: “When you bow to the king, bow straight down,” she announces. “Don’t look at him; you’ll get your head cut off.” The fearsome monarch Currie is referring to is Henry VIII, and on this particular day, Jude Law’s king is in an ax-swinging mood. The background artists on Karim Aïnouz’s set comply to orders and stare down at their toes. Before them, seated on thrones arranged on a raised plinth, is the potentate in question, and Katherine Parr, his queen.
Henry’s had a few wives. Katherine is his sixth and every time she opens her mouth, she’s in mortal danger. How does she survive? That’s the burning question asked by Firebrand, which Aïnouz describes as a “psychological thriller”. History tells us that Parr outlived her husband, but little is known about Parr after that,...

At the 2018 Oscars, Frances McDormand, who’d just won her second Best Actress Academy Award for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” asked all the female nominees to stand. Ten women will always be nominated by the academy: five for Best Actress and another five for Best Supporting Actress. Besides these other nine women, how many others were on their feet in the Dolby Theater?
Forty-seven women other than actresses were nominated for those 90th Academy Awards. Of these, only four won Oscars. By comparison, 151 men other than actors were nominated and 32 took home statuettes. Of the 20 non-gender specific categories, women were contenders in 17 of them; they were shut out of Original Score (5 men), Sound Editing (9 men) and Visual Effects (20 men).

At this year’s Academy Awards, 15 women won while 36 men (some multiple times) made their way to the stage of the Dolby Theater (these figures include the two men and two women are always guaranteed to win the acting awards). That marks a big increase from last year when the gender gap saw just 6 women winners versus 34 men. Scroll down to see the names of the 13 women who won at the 2019 Oscars besides actresses Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk”).
This year, 53 women other than actresses were nominated at the 91st Academy Awards. With 159 men in contention, this meant that women make up 25% of the nominees in the non-gender specific categories (there will always be 10 women and 10 men nominated for the acting awards). At last year’s Oscars women represented 23.73% of the nominees in the 20 non-gender specific categories. Forty-seven women numbered among the contenders in those 17 races.

Oscar voters love to reward the makeup artists and hairstylists who transform some of Hollywood’s most famous faces into historical figures. Since the competitive category of Best Makeup and Hairstyling was introduced at the Academy Awards in 1982, eight films in which performers portray famous folks have won this Oscar. Adam McKay‘s “Vice,” a sly satire on the life and times of politician Dick Cheney, is poised to be the ninth to do so.
Over the two hour plus running time of “Vice,” Christian Bale portrays Cheney from his early years in Wyoming to his eight years as vice president. The actor gained 40 plus pounds and shaved his head to look like the man who was second in command during some of the darkest days in American history.
It is no surprise that Bale is tipped to take home his second Oscar. Also nominated are Amy Adams, who portrays...

Marvel’s zeitgeist-grabbing “Black Panther” dominated the Oscar craft races on Tuesday, grabbing six nominations for costume design, production design, score (composer Ludwig Göransson), song (“All the Stars”), sound editing, and sound mixing.
But it was snubbed for visual effects after being talked up as a frontrunner, and cinematographer Rachel Morrison missed out on her second nomination after breaking the glass ceiling for last year’s “Mudbound.” While the VFX branch may have deemed the effects as too supportive, Morrison perhaps fell prey to the confusion surrounding where cinematography ends and VFX begins.

At last year’s Oscars women represented 23.73% of the nominees in the 20 non-gender specific categories. Forty-seven women numbered among the contenders in 17 races. They were shut out of Original Score (5 men), Sound Editing (9 men) and Visual Effects (20 men). By comparison, 151 men other than actors were nominated. Four women won Oscars as did 32 men.
This year, 53 women other than actresses are nominated at the 91st Academy Awards. With 159 men in contention, this means that women make up 25% of the nominees in the non-gender specific categories. This uptick came despite women being shut out of five races this year.
Besides score (5 men again) and visual effects (20 men again), women are not represented in Best Director (5 men), Cinematography (5 men) and Film Editing (5 men).

‘Mary Queen Of Scots’ Hair & Makeup Designer Talks Transforming Margot Robbie Into Queen Elizabeth I
Like costume designer Alexandra Byrne—her friend and frequent collaborator—Jenny Shircore was daunted by Mary Queen of Scots, trying to find a new angle on Queen Elizabeth I after covering her era twice before. Winning her first Oscar with Elizabeth in 1999, the hair and makeup designer is an expert in period work, whose attraction to the project came down to everything that made it fresh. “The script was very, very different, and I was encouraged by the script,” she says. “I was encouraged by Alex, when I heard her thoughts on the costume design, and I was encouraged when I heard that Saoirse Ronan was playing Mary, Queen of Scots, even more so when I knew Margot Robbie was going to play Elizabeth.”
From director Josie Rourke, the Focus Features release examines the complicated relationship between the Queen and her cousin, the titular Mary Stuart, who comes after her throne.

Margot Robbie (“Mary Queen of Scots”) was among the more surprising nominations last week for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which was a big surge for her film after it had underperformed at other awards season events. Pundits had pegged Robbie and co-star Saoirse Ronan — both Oscar nominees for Best Actress just last year — as major contenders early on this season, but then another film about British royals, “The Favourite,” stole some of its thunder with critics and prognosticators. Is “Mary” once again in it to win it?

Jenny Shircore has done the makeup and hair of several queens over the years: Cate Blanchett in “Elizabeth” and “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (she won an Oscar for the former) and Emily Blunt in “The Young Victoria.”
In fact, she had to be convinced to do it again for Saoirse Ronan’s Queen Mary and Margot Robbie’s Queen Elizabeth in Focus Features’ “Mary Queen of Scots,” released Dec. 7, because she felt she had already thoroughly covered the period. It was costume designer Alexandra Byrne, her good friend and collaborator, who told her that this time was going to be different.
“When I first talked to [director] Josie [Rourke] about Margot Robbie, who plays Elizabeth I,” Shircore recalls, “I asked her if she would want her to look like ‘Margot Robbie’ on that screen or if I could change her — change her eyes, her eyebrows, her nose, her lips. She told me...

Set in 1862, The Aeronauts follow wealthy young widow Amelia Wren (Felicity Jones) and ambitious scientist James Glaisher (Eddie Redmayne) as they mount a balloon expedition to fly higher than anyone in history. This is a journey to the very edge of existence, where the air is thin and the chances of survival are slim. As their perilous ascent reveals their true selves, this unlikely pair discover things about...

Gary Oldman was considered a likely Oscar front-runner for “Darkest Hour” almost as soon as the first production still was released of him disappearing into the role of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. And the prosthetic makeup that helped him disappear became an Oscar front-runner just as quickly. With Oscar night approaching that hasn’t changed, especially with the film’s victories at the Critics’ Choice Awards, BAFTAs and Make Up and Hair Stylists Guild Awards. Kazuhiro Tsuji, David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick are the makeup and hair artists nominated for their work on the docudrama, and they’re the overwhelming favorites to win Best Makeup and Hairstyling with 1/10 odds.
Those odds are based on the combined predictions of thousands of users who have entered their picks at Gold Derby thus far. That includes 26 Expert journalists we’ve polled from top media outlets, 25 of whom are predicting a “Darkest Hour...

At the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Feb. 24, Oscar frontrunner “Darkest Hour” won two of its three races: special makeup effects and best period/character makeup. It lost best period/character hairstyling to “I, Tonya.”
Among those films that “Darkest Hour” edged out for best special makeup effects was “Wonder,” one of its two Oscar rivals for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. That film contended on the contemporary side here and lost its bid for hairstyling to “Pitch Perfect 3″ and makeup to “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.” The third Oscar nominee, “Victoria and Abdul,” was snubbed by the guild.

“Darkest Hour” is the overwhelming Oscar front-runner for Best Makeup and Hairstyling thanks in large part to the prosthetics used to transform lead actor Gary Oldman into British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. This award has gone to a number of films that recreate historical figures over the years, but the motion picture academy has been especially fond of British icons.
Peter Frampton, Paul Pattison and Lois Burwell won for “Braveheart” (1995), about 13th century Scottish warrior William Wallace. But Wallace was actually fighting to free Scotland from English rule, so perhaps we should leave that one out. But just a few years later Jenny Shircore prevailed for “Elizabeth” (1998), which transformed Cate Blanchett into Queen Elizabeth I during the early years of her reign. And one year after that Christine Blundell and Trefor Proud prevailed for Mike Leigh‘s biopic “Topsy-Turvy” (1999), about the British operatic duo of Gilbert and Sullivan.
