Decades before Marvel Studios brought Werewolf by Night to the screen on Disney+, comic book creator Roy Thomas was dreaming up his own horror-centric special presentation.
Thomas, the former Marvel editor in chief and co-creator of Werewolf by Night and a number of others Marvel characters, recently unearthed a 1958 short film he made with his friends as a teenager in Jackson, Missouri. Thomas scripted Les Ghouls and acted in it alongside pals that included Gary Friedrich, who would go on to co-create the well-known character Ghost Rider with Thomas when they both were at Marvel.
Thomas shared Les Ghouls with The Hollywood Reporter in honor of Marvel debuting a color version of 2022’s black and white Werewolf by Night last week. Les Ghouls was an homage to 1948’s Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, which was a favorite of him and his friends. Thomas’ friend John Short, who owned the camera,...

Stephen King has written hundreds of short stories and more than sixty novels, but he has only directed one movie. The goofball 1986 film Maximum Overdrive (watch it Here), which came to Blu-ray as part of the Vestron Video Collector’s Series back in 2018. Now it has been announced that Vestron Video has put together a special steelbook release of Maximum Overdrive – and this steelbook will only be available at Walmart! The street date is May 30th, and pre-orders are already been accepted on Walmart.com.
Images of the steelbook case can be seen at the bottom of this article.
Based on King’s short story Trucks, Maximum Overdrive has the following synopsis: After a comet causes a radiation storm on Earth, machines come to life and turn against their makers. Holed up in a North Carolina truck stop, a group of survivors must fend for themselves against a mass of homicidal trucks.

Exclusive: Marin Ireland, Michael Abbott Jr., and Xander Berkeley have been tapped as the leads in The Dark & The Wicked, a horror film written and directed by Bryan Bertino. It follows two siblings who are summoned back to the family farm to await the inevitability of their father’s death. What initially appears to be a timeless ritual of loss and remembrance turns out to be something very different.
Lynn Andrews, Julie Oliver-Touchstone, Tom Nowicki, and Ella Ballentine co-star in the film which is shooting in Texas.
The pic marks Bertino’s third feature following his debut pic The Strangers, with Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, and The Monster, starring Zoe Kazan, which was released by A24 last year. He’s repped by UTA and Grandview.
Adrienne Biddle and Bertino are producing The Dark & The Wicked under their Unbroken Pictures banner along with Sonny Mallhi and Kevin Matusow for The Traveling Picture Show Company.

Rlje Films has scooped up rights to Plus One, Jeff Chan and Andrew Rhymer’s romantic comedy that will have its world premiere next month at the Tribeca Film Festival. The distributor, which recently released the Sundance revenge pic Mandy starring Nicolas Cage, acquired Plus One preemptively in a low-seven-figure deal, and is eyeing a summer 2019 release.
Starring Maya Erskine (Hulu’s Pen15) and Jack Quaid (Rampage), the pic revolves around longtime friends Alice and Ben, who find themselves in that inevitable year that all late twentysomethings experience — when seemingly every person they know gets married. They agree to be one another’s plus ones as they power through an endless parade of weddings. Ed Begley Jr, SNL‘s Beck Bennett, Rosalind Chao, Brianne Howey, Jon Bass and Finn Wittrock co-star.

As someone who has loved Stephen King’s Maximum Overdrive for more than 30 years now (I wrote about it Here a few years back), the recent Vestron Video Collector’s Series Blu-ray for what I consider to be the ultimate cult film of the 1980s is an absolute treasure trove of awesomeness for fans and newcomers alike. The special features dive into literally everything you could want (minus an interview with King and Maximum Overdrive star Emilio Estevez), from the casting to the effects to how producers Dino De Laurentiis and Martha Schumacher (De Laurentiis) helped establish “Hollywood East” in Wilmington, North Carolina, and even follows the story of how the Green Goblin head came to be restored back in 2011.
I won’t really dive into the story of Maximum Overdrive, because chances are, if you’re reading this site, you are probably already pretty familiar with King’s tale...

Sandwiched between Newcastle and Sunderland, South Shields is all too often dismissed as ‘that town by the sea with the Roman fort and all the curry houses’. And while those are indeed two of our main attractions, there’s a lot more to South Shields than just our rich history and delicious food (not so humble brag intended).
We may not have anything as iconically North Eastern as the Tyne Bridge or Angel of the North, but us Sanddancers have our own local customs and traditions, mostly focused around drinking, that make our little coastal town distinct from its Geordie and Mackem neighbours.
From the good (Minchella’s) and the bad (seagulls) to the downright weird (so many things), we’re a worthy detour on the Metro when it’s actually working. Here’s what makes us and our seaside haven so unique…

Alright, I know that I probably can’t tell you anything new about this one, but sometimes I feel like I need to defend it as a wonderful and random anomaly that will probably never happen again. Stephen King as a director? AC/DC doing the complete score? Man, that sounds like horror/rock and roll heaven! In a way, it was. Once again, I do have some nostalgia for this film.
