The Karlovy Vary Film Festival has unveiled the official selection for its upcoming 58th edition. The lineup comprises 32 films across three sections and a host of world and international premieres. Scroll down for the full list.
Among the lineup is A Sudden Glimpse to Deeper Things, the latest film from prolific documentary filmmaker Mark Cousin. The film’s synopsis reads: One of the most important women in British modern art, the painter Wilhelmina Barns-Graham was a highly inspirational figure, whose work was deeply impacted by a pivotal event in her life. In May 1949, this leading representative of the modernist St Ives group of artists climbed to the top of the Grindelwald glacier in Switzerland, an experience which was to transform the way she saw the world. Karel Och, artistic director of Karlovy Vary, said Tuesday that he’d identified a number of themes and genre in the selection, which included “a freshly revisionist take on the esthetical canons of a period film; a balanced, caring but also provocative look on the fate of a woman in the contemporary society in any moment of her life; and the immediate influence of political events on the life of an individual human being anywhere in the world.”

The prequel film we have all been waiting for is finally here and I am really happy to say that it is as brilliant and bombastic as the original film. Obviously, we are talking about Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the prequel to George Miller‘s 2015 Mad Max: Fury Road. Directed by Miller from a screenplay by Nico Lathouris and Miller, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga follows the story of a young Furiosa as she is taken from Green Place of Many Mothers and tries to survive in the wasteland while trying to get back home but the war between great biker horde’s warlord Dementus and Immortan Joe makes it harder. Replacing Charlize Theron from Fury Road, Anya Taylor-Joy takes over the role of Furiosa in the prequel film and it also stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, Lachy Hulme, John Howard, Angus Sampson, and Nathan Jones. So,...

Large scale puppets, miniatures and various other all-practical effects will come together for Grylu Sker, an Icelandic ghost story from the creators of The Haunted Swordsman – along with Sjón, co-writer of Robert Eggers’ The Northman – that is now funding on Kickstarter.
The film will even feature a stop motion animation sequence supervised by Oscar-winner Phil Tippett (Mad God), so it’s no surprise that the Kickstarter fund has been a smashing success so far. Running until August 11, over $90,000 of the total $120,000 goal has already been raised!
Billed as a gothic adventure, Grylu Sker is the tale of a lost explorer set in a world of Icelandic folklore written by Tab Murphy and Icelandic author Sjón (co-writer of The Northman). It is a story of an explorer’s fight for survival on a bleak unforgiving island and also a re-imagining of the legendary Icelandic witch Gryla.

Editors note: Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series debuts and celebrates the scripts of films that will be factors in this year’s movie awards race.
Robert Eggers has previously said that he never wanted to make a Viking movie. It wasn’t until he traveled to Iceland in 2015 that he began to see the beautiful landscapes and do research into Viking lore. Luckily for him, Alexander Skarsgård was itching to be involved in such a movie, and the two decided to collaborate. With the help of Icelandic author and poet Sjón, Eggers crafted The Northman, a historically accurate tale of honor, revenge and extreme violence that hit theaters in April.
The Northman follows Amleth (Skarsgård), a Viking prince who watches the brutal murder of his father King Aurvandil War-Raven (Ethan Hawke) and the kidnapping of his mother Queen Gudrún (Nicole Kidman), both at the hands of his uncle Fjölnir (Claes Bang). Two decades later,...

For writer-director Robert Eggers, Focus Features’ The Northman really began when the filmmaker and his wife took a vacation to Iceland. “It was the first time I became interested in old Norse culture,” recalls Eggers. It was on that same trip that Eggers met singer-songwriter Björk (who has a small role in The Northman as the mysterious Seeress). She introduced the director to her frequent collaborator Sjón, the Icelandic poet, lyricist and screenwriter, who ultimately co-wrote the historical epic with Eggers. “The Northman was birthed on that trip,” he adds.
Starring Alexander Skarsgård, the film is a retelling of the Scandinavian legend of Amleth (which also inspired William Shakespeare’s Hamlet). After witnessing the murder of his father and kidnapping of his mother at the hands of his uncle, young Amleth escapes his home and vows to avenge his father. Many years later,...

Valdimar Jóhannsson’s Lamb has won the 2022 Nordic Council Film Prize.
The award was announced Tuesday evening during the Nordic Council’s Autumn Session in Helsinki, Finland. Lamb beat out four other shortlisted films, including Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World, Hlynur Pálmason’s Godland, Teemu Nikki’s The Blind Man Who Did Not Want to See Titanic, and Clara Sola, directed by Nathalie Álvarez Mesén.
The Nordic Council Film Prize, which celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, is awarded annually to “an artistically significant, Nordic-produced full-length feature film with cinema distribution”. The prize also comes with a Dkk 300,000 cash prize, which is shared between the director, writers, and producers.
Discussing their decision to pick Lamb, the Nordic council jury described the film as “unique and darkly menacing.”
“Lamb combines Iceland‘s tradition of pastoral cinema and the literary heritage of the folk tale,” the jury said in a statement.

There’s much that is fascinating about the Viking culture, largely because of its organized barbarism while feeling incredibly familiar given how much of their legacy has seeped into world culture. Television has certainly explored these people through several series, but it’s been a long time since we had a good, sweeping Viking saga on the silver screen.

Robert Eggers’s viking epic, “The Northman,” has been out for a few weeks now, and while it hasn’t done huge business at the box office – about 31 million as of this writing – it’s an interesting release for early potential awards conversations.
Eggers burst onto the scene in 2015 when his debut feature “The Witch” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where the filmmaker received a jury prize for his direction. It wouldn’t be released by A24 until a year later, at which point it continued to achieve acclaim, winning two Indie Spirit awards in February 2017 for Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay.

This article contains The Northman spoilers.
“To be or not to be.” That is a question which never occurs to Alexander Skarsgård’s Amleth in The Northman. He knows exactly what he’ll be next week. It’s the same thing as last week: a bloodthirsty Viking. Nevertheless, the character has much in common with William Shakespeare’s Danish prince, who famously uttered the above quote during a soliloquy in Act Three of Hamlet. And whether viewers are familiar with the Bard’s tragedy or not, that connection to Elsinore pervades throughout this weekend’s bare-chested epic.
“I felt if I’m doing Hamlet or The Lion King, I have a story that the audience knows already,” The Northman director Robert Eggers told Den of Geek Magazine. “So therefore I can really indulge in the world-building without confusing people.”
Indeed, there is something primordial about the storytelling in Eggers’ film.

In a profile of Robert Eggers published in The New Yorker a couple of weeks before the release of The Northman, Sam Knight called the director’s latest “the most accurate Viking movie ever made.” The 38-year-old’s reputation as meticulous researcher long predates his Scandinavian saga, but the film’s estimated 90 million budget—a huge leap from the director’s first two features, The Witch (2015) and The Lighthouse (2019)—means that fastidiousness and attention to detail can now play out on a much larger and more ambitious scale. Co-written by Eggers with the Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón, The Northman borrows from the same Nordic legend Shakespeare drew from for his Hamlet. In Eggers’ retelling, Alexander Skarsgård plays Amleth, a prince on a revenge mission. As a ten-year-old (played by Oscar Novak), Amleth saw his father, King Aurvandil (Ethan Hawke), murdered by his uncle Fjölnir (Claes Bang), who then seized...

Filmmaker Robert Eggers broke through with back-to-back horror films “The Witch” (2015) and “The Lighthouse” (2019), both marked by shocking moments of violence and intimate, claustrophobic tension. He expands his scope — not to mention his budget — with “The Northman,” which opened on April 22 and dramatizes the medieval Scandinavian legend that was the direct inspiration for William Shakespeare‘s “Hamlet.” But is it that same level of legendary?
As of this writing the film has a MetaCritic score of 83 based on 49 reviews counted: 42 positive and seven mixed, but none outright negative. Twelve of those positive reviews score the film a perfect 100. On Rotten Tomatoes, which classifies reviews only as positive or negative, the film is rated 88 fresh based on 220 reviews, which means only 26 of those critics gave it a thumbs down. Alexander Skarsgård delivers a wholly remarkable performance as the lead in the new film, The Northman, from visionary director Robert Eggers.
On the verge of manhood, Prince Amleth (Oscar Novak) witnesses his father’s (Ethan Hawke) murder at his uncle’s hand. Two decades later, a grown Amleth (Skarsgård), undertakes a quest to rescue his mother (Nicole Kidman) from his murderous uncle and avenge his father.
Director Robert Eggers imbues all of the moodiness and artistic flourish he exhibited in his earlier films such as The Lighthouse (2019) and The Witch (2015). Written along with acclaimed Icelandic author Sjón, Eggers’ script is unrelenting in its portrayal of Amleth’s struggles and associated hardships. But what is refreshing is that it never feels as though Amleth’s sole purpose for existing is to exact revenge for his father. Instead, it plays as though he is more intent on trying to live some sort...

Robert Eggers and co-writer Sjón had to work on major parts of the script of "The Northman" after test audiences said they had a hard time understanding the dense narrative of the film, which is steeped in Norse mythology and based on one of the most famous Scandinavian sagas -- the story of Amleth, prince of Denmark.
Eggers (who also directed the movie) has previously spoken about certain artistic compromises for "The Northman" that had to be made due to studio involvement, but the audience reaction to test screenings of the film propelled him to make major changes in post-production. After shooting grueling, physically-demanding sequences...

“The Northman” used the Nordic past as its North Star, but after test audiences reportedly balked at the film’s dense historical accuracy, writer-director Robert Eggers and co-writer Sjón had to flip the script (literally) in post-production.
Yet the intense long shots and grueling filming schedule meant that any changes — including dialogue — were confined to the editing room. So, as Eggers and Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón enlisted actors Alexander Skarsgård, Ethan Hawke, Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Willem Dafoe, Ralph Ineson, and Björk, to Adr certain lines, the script had to match their original mouth movements per each scene.
In an interview with Vulture, Eggers explained, “You’re like, ‘Okay, we’ve got 18 syllables. The fifth syllable has to be a T because he enunciates that T so well.’ Maybe you could get away with a D. And then this syllable has to be an S.”

This review of “The Northman” was first published on April 11, 2022.
Sharpen the swords and prepare the funeral pyres: A Viking is out for bloody revenge in “The Northman,” and the corpses keep piling higher and higher in this trippy action epic from director and co-writer Robert Eggers (“The Lighthouse”).
Written in collaboration with Icelandic author Sjón, “The Northman” is gory, muddy, hallucinatory — and intensely entertaining. An examination of the way that violence begets violence, and a study of how a life devoted to single-minded hatred and vengeance can lead to uncomfortable truths, this is a movie that lives up to every saga comic books and metal bands ever spun about the brutal conquerors of yore.
We open on young Prince Amieth running to tell his mother Queen Gudrún (Nicole Kidman) of the return of King Aurvandil (Ethan Hawke), whose arrival is celebrated with a feast that includes japery from court...

The Northman, Robert Eggers’ biggest and most expansive (and expensive) feature to date, is also his best so far. It’s an oft-stunning visual feast and an entertaining peek into Eggers’ instincts as a choreographer not only of historical detail but of bloody action. It is also an instructive example of how the most visionary intentions can’t always enliven an otherwise rote story. The Northman opens in Ad 895, when Amleth, the Northman of the title, is a boy (played at this stage by Oscar Novak). But it is primarily...

Robert Eggers turns the doom and gloom of history into high art. His staggering 2015 debut “The Witch” turned memories of Salem witch fears into haunting New England folk horror and “The Lighthouse” turned the world’s most uncomfortable naval gig into a claustrophobic tale of bad roommates. Now he’s taken his vision to an epic scale with “The Northman,” a sprawling Viking saga that wears its vicious spirit on every blood-soaked sword and ear-splitting battle cry.
Produced by Focus Features for somewhere in the vicinity of 70-90 million, “The Northman” is the rare U.S. studio production directed by a rising auteur that doesn’t show the mark of compromise. Production started in March 2020 before Covid shutdowns, and resumed at the end of the year. Revenge is a dish best served cold, and it doesn’t get any colder, literally or figuratively, than the bitter portion ladled up in Robert Eggers’ merciless yarn of medieval vengeance, The Northman. This seriously nasty and violent tale comes across as an intense labor of love on the part of the American director and his Icelandic co-writer, the poet Sjón; there’s scarcely a moment of softness, sentiment or relaxation here, just fierce and ferocious determination to fight and prevail in an unstintingly harsh environment. For the most part it’s an enthralling immersion in a forbidding time and place, enhanced by an immoderately attractive cast and saddled only by a dramatic sameness that settles in after a while and gradually diminishes the film’s impact.
There haven’t been too many Viking movies, most likely because the time and place involved pretty seriously restrict the format to two things—sailing and marauding,...

For The Northman, co-writer/director Robert Eggers transports audiences to the year 895 Ad for his epic Viking tale fueled by vengeance, betrayal, and blood. At the start, we’re introduced to King Aurvandil (Ethan Hawke), who is returning from battle and welcomed warmly by his wife, Queen Gudrún (Nicole Kidman), and his young son and heir to the throne, Amleth (played by Oscar Novak). After undergoing a rite of passage that helps young Amleth continue his journey towards adulthood, Aurvandil’s devious brother, Fjölnir (Claes Bang), decides to betray his family by mercilessly slaughtering his brother and kidnapping Queen Gudrún as a means of claiming her as his own. Amleth manages to escape before Fjölnir’s henchmen can kill him, and as the young man leaves everything and everyone he knows behind, Amleth makes a promise to himself that one day he will avenge his father’s murder and rescue...

Whether the dread-inducing rituals of witches or a turpentine-fueled descent into hysteria, Robert Eggers’ cinema is of unflinching immersion. Trapped in the center of symmetrical frames and surrounded by immaculate production design, the only escape for his characters’ fury seems to be bounding off the screen onto the audience themselves. The effect oscillates between entrancing and grating, wearing one down until there’s no choice but to succumb to the mania and plunge into the madness. A considerable step up in scope, his third feature The Northman gratefully bears scant touches of a compromised vision, delivering a bloody, visceral Viking epic that utilizes a simple revenge template as the canvas to examine the contradictions of a hero’s journey.

Three features in, it’s beginning to look as if the much thrown around and overused term, “visionary,” can be applied with a great deal of justification to writer-director Robert Eggers. His new film The Northman follows in the footsteps of his two previous efforts, The Witch (2015) and The Lighthouse (2019), both of which created wholly immersive, fully detailed portraits of life in specific historical settings while exploring the thin line between the natural and the supernatural.
The Northman takes much the same direction, only in the most epic scale that Eggers has worked with yet. Set in 10th-century Scandinavia and Iceland, the film is truly breathtaking in its scope, its detail, and, again, its completely immersive quality. You don’t doubt for a second that you are anywhere but the time and place in which the film is set. And like its predecessors, The Northman also suggests that any barrier...

Anya Taylor-Joy and Malcolm McRae are on a red carpet roll. A week after putting their relationship on display at Vanity Fair's Oscars afterparty, the couple attended a screening for Taylor-Joy's latest film, "The Northman," in London together on April 5. It seems they have their signature red carpet pose down pat, as Taylor-Joy again stood slightly in front of her musician boyfriend and held his hand while posing for the cameras. They also showed some low-key Pda - a rarity for Taylor-Joy, who's pretty private about her love life - with a few sweet kisses.
Both stars looked as chic as ever for the event - Taylor-Joy layered a long white coat over a sequin Dior minidress, while McRae wore a black suit and beige trench coat. "The Northman" lead Alexander Skarsgård, director Robert Eggers, and cowriter Sjón were also in attendance at the screening.

Ethan Hawke Compares Filming ‘Northman’ to ‘Apocalypse Now’: Robert Eggers ‘Has the Balls’ to Go Big
It’s difficult to come by a true epic film, one that really goes big and certainly never goes home until it achieves what it set out to do.
Ethan Hawke told The New Yorker that being part of Robert Eggers’ “The Northman” was like returning to the old-school, big-budget roots of the Hollywood studio films of yore. While Hawke admitted that he may have scoffed at auteur Eggers’ methods when he was younger, he can now only admire the precision behind building a historically accurate world — much like Francis Ford Coppola did for his (troubled and year-plus-long) 1979 war epic “Apocalypse Now.”
“So much of moviemaking is people trying to sell you something,” Hawke said. “I’ve spent my life wondering, ‘Will I ever get to be on a set that feels like “Apocalypse Now”?’ You know, like, somebody’s trying. They have the balls and the hubris and the arrogance to say,...

It only takes a bit of “The Witch”-craft and enduring the natural elements for Anya Taylor-Joy to fully feel like herself.
The “Northman” star revealed to British Vogue that she “ecstatically” embraced the elements while shooting the Robert Eggers-helmed Viking revenge epic, which shot in Northern Ireland — including scenes involving standing barefoot in mud or ice-cold ocean water.
“I looked insane. So infuriatingly joyful,” said Taylor-Joy, who it’s noted carried her belongings around in a plastic shopping bag on set during such scenes.
Taylor-Joy likened reuniting with “The Witch” director Eggers, plus cinematographer Jarin Blaschke and editor Louise Ford, to being back with her “original film family.” And she had no problem jumping — literally — into the period piece.
“The stunt guys would say, ‘Can we get out of the water now?’ And I was like, ‘This is amazing. Nature! We’re outside! We get to make art,...

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Valdimar Jóhannsson's Lamb is showing exclusively on Mubi in many countries starting February 25, 2022 in the series Debuts.“What the fuck is this?” “Happiness.” This exchange occurs halfway in Valdimar Jóhannsson’s debut feature, Lamb, a cautionary tale about familial integrity but one that if fuelled by the insatiable, all-too-human desire for togetherness. The happiness in question is embodied by a family of three: Ingvar (Hilmir Snær Guðnason), Maria (Noomi Rapace), and their adopted daughter Ada, whose origin prompts the bemused question to begin with. But with Lamb, Jóhannsson and his co-writer Sjón prefer to interrogate repercussions instead of genesis. The film’s opening shot is shrouded in mystique, as a herd of wild horses turn back from their path amidst a snow storm, while its hiss drenches the whole scene in ambiguity and dread. Inside a barn, not too far away,...

Look, I'm an awfully simple man. You tell me that filmmaker Robert Eggers is writing and directing a new movie about Vikings that promises to deliver a sweeping tale about revenge (and that the movie is also co-written by poet/novelist Sjón!), and I'm going to spend every waking moment in breathless anticipation until that movie releases in theaters. That's just science, people! "The Northman" will actually represent something of a departure for Eggers after his relatively small-scale horror/thrillers in previous years, 2015's "The Witch" and his largely one-location follow-up, "The Lighthouse." By comparison, everything we've seen from "The Northman" — including the...

A lone rider on horseback; a child’s oath of vengeance upon the sight of a beheaded parent; a burly, statuesque, and shirtless he-man swinging a sword into battle while lit only by the glow of wildfire. All of these things could be used to describe the joy of ‘80s beefcake action movies, a la Conan: The Barbarian (1982) or The Beastmaster (1982). But such images are given new and startling life in the first trailer for Robert Eggers’ The Northman.
This highly anticipated 2021 release is writer-director Eggers’ first step outside the horror genre (and A24) after the one-two punch of The Witch (2016) and The Lighthouse (2019). It’s been two years since Robert Eggers’ last utterly singular movie: “The Lighthouse.” Now, come April 2022, Focus Features will release “The Northman,” Eggers’ violent Viking epic starring Alexander Skarsgard, Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, and Anya Taylor-Joy. Willem Dafoe and Björk (playing a character called Seeress) round out the cast. At last, Focus has revealed the first trailer for the saga. Watch it below before the movie opens in theaters April 22.
Focus’ official description calls the film “an epic revenge thriller that explores how far a Viking prince will go to seek justice for his murdered father.” Principle photography began in Northern Ireland in March 2020 and was halted almost immediately on account of the Covid-19 pandemic. Production resumed that August.
Eggers cowrote the script with Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón. And beyond his “Witch” star Taylor-Joy, “Witch” actor Ralph Ineson, and “Lighthouse” star Dafoe, he’s reteaming with cinematographer Jarin Blaschke and editor Louise Ford.

This outrageous story of a bereaved couple’s surrogate child ropes in a wild bestiary of creatures great and digital
Icelandic director Valdimar Jóhannsson makes a coolly outrageous feature debut with this jawdropping horror-comedy of loneliness, co-written by Jóhannsson with the lyricist and Björk collaborator Sigurjón Birgir Sigurðsson, or Sjón. It is performed with unflinching commitment by its executive producer-star Noomi Rapace, who is first among equals in a great cast of humans, animals and various prosthetic and digital creature effects.
Maria (Rapace) and Ingvar (Hilmir Snaer Guðnason) are an unhappy couple with a remote farm in Iceland: it gradually becomes clear they have lost their only child. The drama begins with a strange spirit-visitation in the barn that scares the animals: a ewe becomes pregnant with a bizarre animal-human hybrid and poor, stricken Maria (her name’s importance is left for us to digest) conceives a passionate attachment to this precious being,...

It took eight years and a very enticing look book before Lamb co-writer and director Valdimar Jóhannsson got Iceland’s current Oscar entry off the ground.
The A24 theatrical release follows a childless couple, Maria (Noomi Rapace) and Ingvar (Hilmir Snær Guðnason), who are desolate sheep farmers in the cold countryside. Then something wonderful happens — you could call it divine – and without spoiling too much a special someone comes into their lives. They name her Ada.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo actress told us during during the film’s panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: International that Jóhannsson’s pitch was of few words, but rather a bulk of pictures in a heavy volume of illustrations he created. “I was drawn into the universe of Lamb,” Rapace said.
The filmmaker co-penned the screenplay with Icelandic poet Sjón. Jóhannsson even created a clay scale model of the farm he yearned to create for the film.
