No time for my Year End Roundup or even my Havana Film Festival Report because I am busy with writing a Report -For-Pay of the 1,000 Top Filmmakers, Location Managers and Influencers Worldwide for a particularly smart country’s film commissioner and I must deliver it by the year’s end.
As I compile it, I am struck by the names of the film companies I am looking at. German names are mundane and Irish are imaginative. I know the U.S. names so well that in contrast, the French names are so evocative.
Naming companies after their owners and the well known studio names are normal and mundane. Personal meaning names like Lava Bear or Wild West Picture Show are more interesting as they bring up imaginary pictures. Weed Road of Akiva Goldsman is very evocative – do its owners smoke weed? Virgin Produced – well that’s fairly obvious I think -- once you know Richard Branson owns it, Walden Media evokes Walden Pond. Village Roadshow always sounded good but it’s old school like the majors are by now, as is New Regency of former arms dealer Arnon Milchan now partner of 20th Century Fox and others with their longstanding studio deals. In the U.S. we have so many old studio or “studio deal” companies whose early origins have been obscured by the sands of time and which no longer elicit dreams of greatness or memories of private childhood games or haunts, names like Alcon, the company founded by FedEx's Fred Smith, Leonardo di Caprio's Appian Way (recalling the old Roman road), Mark Canton's Atmosphere Entertainment, Amram Bernstein's Beacon Pictures, Rob Reiner's Castle Rock Entertainment, Spring Creek which was so evocative of Paula Weinstein when she was with Mark Rosenberg, major Columbia Pictures, Weinstein offshoot Dimension Films, Spielberg's Dreamworks, Endgame Entertainment, James Schamus and David Linde's Focus Features now Universal's arthouse arm, major Fox 2000 and Fox Searchlight, Gold Circle Films of My Big Fat Greek Wedding fame, HBO – a perfect name of the time and place, HBO Latin America Group – a perfect revisionist name for the brand, Imagine Entertainment which still elicits the name of Brian Glazer ,Malpaso which still evokes Clint Eastwood, Mandalay Pictures which still recalls Peter Guber and those old Sony days of power plays, Legendary Pictures recalls Batman and Superman, Marvel Studios – the comicbook heroes, Lionsgate – gone corporate after their indie Canadian beginnings so long ago, , MGM, Moonstone, Morgan Creek Productions, Mutual Films, Myriad Pictures, New Line Cinema, New Regency, Pandemonium (we still love Bill Mechanic), Paramount Pictures, , Phoenix Pictures (we still love Mike Medavoy), Radar Pictures (Ted Fields), Red Om (Julie Roberts), Relativity Media (Ryan Cavanaugh), Revelations (hooray for Morgan Freeman), , Ritchie-Wigram, Screen Gems, Sidney Kimmel Entertainment to name a few, Tribeca Films, Twentieth Century Fox, Universal Pictures, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros.
We have the usual names based on the company owners who are or perceive themselves to be brands in themselves like Apatow, Berlanti Prods, Bleiberg Entertainment, Blumhouse Prods. In which Jason Blum becomes horror branded, Bender Spenk, Bruce Cohen Prods., Callahan Filmworks, Chris Morgan Prods., Chuck Lorre Prods., De Line, de Passe Jones Entertainment, Di Novi, Francine Maisler & Associates, Freemantle, George Litto , Gerber, Gk Films, Hurwitz & Schlossberg Prods., , J.W. Prods., Josephson, KatzSmith, Lin Pictures, Stuber Pictures, Tdj Enterprises, Team Downey, The Weinstein Company.
There are those companies whose names evoke places like 22nd & Indiana, Arroyo Films, Broken Road Prods., Cross Creek, GreeneStreet Films, Cherry Road Films (not so new), Hyde Park , Lakeshore Entertainment (where Tom Rosenberg either lived or vacationed as a child), Langley Park, Olive Bridge Entertainment, Pearl Street, Spring Street, Barry Levinson's Baltimore, Kevin Spacey's Trigger Street, Thunder Road, Summit named after the street Patrick Wachsberger live(d) on in Beverly Hills.
The U.S. fanciful names like 3 Monkeys, Angle Films, Agregate Films, Polymorphic evoke something more private than public. Other companies evoking private signals to those who are in the know are 3 Monkeys, Aggregate Films (pretty hip for today), Angle Films, Barnstorm Pictures, Bold Films, Branded Films (a good capitalistic name for today), Captivate Entertainment, Carousel Prods., Cruel and Unusual, Everyman Pictures, Exclusive Media Group, Film 44, FilmDistrict, Global Produce, Green Hat Films, Groundswell , Gulfstream, Heyday, Illumination Entertainment, ImageMovers, Lava Bear Films – hats off to David Linde, Media Rights Capital, Mockingbird Pictures, Ninjas Runnin Wild, One Race Films, Open City (we love Jason Kliot and Joana Vicente), Original Films, Our Stories, Playtone, Polymorphic, Roserock Films, Saturn, , Atlantic Streamline, Shandaland – I love the Yiddish reference here , Strike Entertainment, Thousand Words.
For some reason, the French names sound more exotic or, if not exotic, then somehow more evocative of the unknown…Of course some are named after their owners, like Les Films d’Antoine…though even that sounds more exotic than Gk Films, Graham King’s company. There is an everyday familiarity with the U.S. that I definitely do not have with the French.
I feel a little like Proust in Names and Places, conjuring up unknown histories and deeper meanings to the French companies.
Ok, A.S.A.P. is American so that hardly counts, though it is a cool name for a film company. And Anna Lena, maybe is a person’s name. Avenue B, again is American as is Blue Monday and Local Film, though Charivari is Italian and Aurora is Latin. But the Cine names are great: Cine Nomine – what an intelligent play on words, in the name of g’d, or Cinema Defacto or Cine-Sud; all have great meaning behind them. Dharamsala is either an Indian God or food, Dolce Vita we know is a tribute to Fellini. Is Delante Films like Adelante? And Elzevir – again Proust enters with his fictionalized artist. Estrella and Gloria are names aiming for Greatness. But what is Kaleo?
La Vie est Belle gets me singing the song from South Pacific. Lazennec seems very old and venerable, aristocratic even, while Les Enrages is very 60s. Rezo is also an old and classic film company of France and Pathe and Gaumont are equivalent to our major studio names. Les Films de la Croisade – does it have a crusade as its mission? Les Films du Lendemain seems very laid back. Les Films du Poisson makes me wonder what does a fish have to do with the movies? And what is Veyrier? Les Productions Balthazar sound s great, though its founder’s name is Balthazar. And Les Films Pelleas sound grand and mythological. Mille et Une Films makes you know there are 1,001 stories to be told. Haut et Court elicits a picture which I cannot explain.
While MK2 is simply based upon the name of Marin Karmitz, I love his job title, “President du Conseil de Surveillance”, or President of the Surveillance Council, as he grants his son Nathanael his legacy.
Noodles is fun. Petit is descriptive, Sbs is boring – I thought it was a broadcaster but it’s just a name, however, the name Said Ben Said is not boring at all nor are his films, like Passion and Carnage. Sciapode is intriguing – it sounds like sci-fi and Sombrero makes me think the filmmaker leans toward the Latino. Stone Angels – English again, as is The French Connection – both conjure up images from real life fiction. Stone Angels that decorate tombs of old aristocrats; Pierre-Ange Le Pogam’s name also conjures up the Proustian Names of Old - Stone Angel the Pogam…what is a Pogam? Tempete Sous un Crane is also totally out there as a name…Storm Beneath a Crane? Maybe I don’t know French so well after all. But that is Julie Delpy’s company She’s already mostly American anyway. . I loved her last film 2 Days in New York. It would take me another lifetime to be as knowledgeable about the French as I am about the Americans. And I’m not very knowledgeable about them either nowadays. But the French names make me feel like Proust as they elicit wonderment and create stories in and of themselves.

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia made headlines this week for his rant at a Princeton student about gays. But this is just the latest from Scalia. He, and his son, who ministers to an ex-gay group, don't actually believe in gay people. They believe in gay behavior. To them, we're no more real than Santa.
La Reid says that he's leaving The X Factor to go back to the music business full time, which should make it painfully obvious that The X Factor (and The Voice, and American Idol) are not about the music business.
Since we know that we're getting a Tron 3, it was probably only a matter of time before we found out that Garrett Hedlund is going back the Spandex suits.

Vulture has a fun set visit to G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend) which stars Megan Mullally as the extremely gay positive mother to The Hard Times of R.J. Berger's out Paul Iacono. The plot is about a gay student played by Michael J. Willett who comes out at high school and is instantly the must-have accessory for all the girls, while the flamboyant-but-closeted friend played by Iacono stews, despite having a mother (Mullally) so gay positive she rents Brokeback Mountain and liveblogs it to him. "Not a lot of foreplay. It looks a lot like grappling, but that's a cowboy kiss. I guess they didn't really need protection back in those days."

Now let’s get started with this week's questions!
I keep hearing about this gay storyline with Will on Days Of Our Lives, but what’s taking so long? – Mike (via email)
Well, Mike, your timing couldn’t be better because Days is finally going to stop talking the talk and start walking the big gay walk. I was hanging out at this weekend’s ‘Day of Days’ event at the Universal City Walk in Burbank and I had a chance to sit down with Chandler Massey himself.
He elaborated on what Freddie Smith told me a few weeks ago,...

Seriously?
At the end of last night's Project Runway, i took to Twitter to voice my ... displeasure.
Well, I've had time to sleep on it, and now that the emotions of the moment have passed, I can come at the events that transpired with a fresh perspective.
And it's still a load of crap.
Let's a look at how the show managed to screw everything up.
Beefcake: Any time they have Anthony splayed on anything, it gets extra points.
He's practically begging to be cuddled
Drama: The drama this week involved a routine trip to Mood that turned into Anya: The Lifetime Original Movie. She was close to checking out when she discovered that the envelope with her $100 dollars was gone. She nervously backtracked throughout the store, eventually enlisting the aid of store employees until Tim told her she had two choices: You can go back and have only muslin to work with,...

90210 guest star Freddie Smith has signed up to the cast of Days of Our Lives for the show's first gay romance storyline. Smith will join the soap later this month following his recent guest stint as the love interest of gay character Teddy Montgomery on 90210. The actor will star as Sonny, described as being a good-natured young man who returns home to rejoin his family. "He is the centre of attention kind of guy but in a good way," Smith revealed to Entertainment Weekly. "He's very confident and mature, he's traveled the world and is very open minded. "Days of Our Lives" has been on the air for nearly half a century, but has never had a gay storyline... until now. Freddie Smith, who starred as recurring gay character Marco on the last season of "90210," will arrive in Salem on the June 23 episode to begin the first gay romance in the show's history.
Entertainment Weekly spoke with Smith about the new role. "There are a lot of guys on the show, so it's going to be interesting to see who I end up falling for. Someone new? Someone on the show?" he says. "We all make jokes, 'who am I going to make out with first?' It's going to be fun to see."
On "90210," Smith played the boyfriend of Trevor Donovan's character, but now that Donovan is no longer a regular cast member, we're unlikely to see much more of Smith.

ABC intends to keep playing with big red balls – Wipeout has been renewed for a fifth season, but with Vanessa Minnillo as the host. I still think the course should be an attraction at Disney.
For reasons that I can only imagine, the small town of Juzcar in Spain has been repainted Smurf blue in honor of the upcoming movie. Sony has promised to restore everything after the promotion, but from the images, I think it looks kind of neat.
There’s a rumor going around that girls are so into getting Justin Bieber’s used Underoos that when he takes them off, a security guard issues him a new pair and takes the used ones to an incinerator. It sounds like an episode of Dirty Jobs, except Mike Rowe wouldn’t even go there.
Five out authors including John Waters, Edmund White and Michael Cunningham name the best gay books in the world.

The rumors are true: Salem is about to get its first gay storyline! EW can report exclusively that Freddie Smith (90210) will make his debut June 23 to lay the groundwork for a same-sex relationship on the traditionally conservative show. He’ll play Sonny, a good-natured young man who returns home to join his family.
What Salem clan is he talking about? That’s all Smith is willing to tease for now. ”He is the center of attention kind of guy but in a good way,” Smith told EW. ”He’s very confident and mature, he’s traveled the world and is very open-minded.

Sad, sad news for "90210" fans: Trevor Donovan, a.k.a. Teddy Montgomery, a.k.a. the most interesting thing about the show's third season... is leaving.
TVLine reports that Donovan will appear in five episodes next season in a guest-starring capacity, but he'll no longer be billed as a series regular. Donovan's exit follows those of Lori Loughlin and Ryan Eggold, the only "adults" remaining on series.
The West Bev kids are headed to college next year, and in the season finale, Teddy made mention of trying to return to the tennis career that was sidelined by an injury. Perhaps he'll be hitting the tennis circuit, taking him out of Beverly Hills?
Last time we spoke with Donovan, his future on the series was uncertain. "I don't have a clue on the planet," he said of Teddy's Season 4 direction. "I swear to you, I have no idea. They've left it very open-ended with my character.

More Tragedy for One Life To Live's Bo and Nora
On May 23, Matthew will collapse and, later, he's diagnosed as being very nearly brain-dead. Then comes word that Bo's brother Clint (Jerry verDorn) needs a new heart or he will die. You can see where this plot might go.
Oltl And AMC Actors Headed to Y&R
"The Y&R writers are heartbroken and devastated that our other soaps have been cancelled. Our hearts go out to all of the people who are now out of jobs. So, in many ways, we feel a responsibility to make [Y&R] as good as possible in order to pay homage to those other soaps." With the soap landscape shrinking, the existing soaps are also focused on making changes that will be viewed as improvements. Scott Hamner acknowledges, "We also feel the pressure to make the show good."
Worst name for an American soap?...

When I first watched this week's episode of 90210, I was highly annoyed because it seemed like Teddy got so little screentime — especially in comparison to Namaste Naomi's increasingly tiresome relationship with Hot Geek. But when I actually measured how much time Teddy had, it clocked in at nearly six minutes. Granted, one of those minutes was watching Sterling Silver rhapsodize over the wonders of a Gouda grilled cheese sandwich (only at West Beverly Hills High), but that still left Teddy with close to five minutes facetime. So why did I still feel like he's getting short shrift from the 90210 writers?
It certainly didn't help that last week he got zero minutes, but more than anything I think my gripe has to do with how little development they are giving Teddy and Marco's relationship. When we last saw Teddy, he was calling Marco to set up the tennis lesson he...

Relive the episode in photos, and join me in showering Jessica Stroup & Shenae Grimes with compliments.
Two of my biggest wishes for 90210 came true on the May 2 episode: Annie (Shenae Grimes) got a ton of time in spotlight with an interesting storyline, and Silver (Jessica Stroup) finally had her long-awaited second bipolar episode. But while Silver’s mental breakdown might sound like a sick wish, it’s only because it gave Jessica Stroup another opportunity to show what a great actress she is. Well done, Stroup. Well done.
As you all know, Silver’s been on a downward spiral ever since Adrianna (Jessica Lowndes) started messing with her bipolar medication — and she finally spiralled out of control this week, to the point where Navid (Michael Steger) and Dixon (Tristan Wilds) had to have her committed to the psychiatric ward at the hospital. While I loved the idea of Silver’s...

"90210's" Teddy Montgomery has been a player since he was introduced in the second season, but while he was on Spring Break this season he got a little taste of how it feels to be played. In short: not good. After hooking up with his old roommate, Tripp, Teddy discovered that the guy had a boyfriend. Ouch.
"Teddy was always a womanizer, but this hookup on the trip kind of changed things for him. Realizing he got played gave him some perspective on what he wants and who he wants to be in a relationship," Trevor Donovan tells Zap2it. "It really shifts."
The good news is that it helped clear his head when it came to Marco (Freddie Smith), the cute, out-of-the-closet soccer player who Teddy promised tennis lessons. "Teddy wants more solidarity in a relationship," Donovan says. "He wants a more substantial emotional connection with someone, and that person seems to be Marco.

The long-ignored couple will finally get some attention on tonight’s ’90210,’ and Trevor & Freddie tell us exactly fans can expect!
Teddy (Trevor Donovan) and Marco’s (Freddie Smith) relationship may have started off rocky on 90210, but the couple’s future is definitely looking bright. HollywoodLife.com recently chatted with both halves of West Bev’s newest pair, who promise their relationship will soon develop a “solid foundation.” And yes, it sounds like we’ve got an epic first kiss coming our way soon!
“We did our first kissing scene, and that’s coming up,” Freddie reveals.
But it sounds like the fans will be more anxious for the big moment than Freddie was: “To me, it was just another day, another scene,” he continues. “It was just a fun scene do to. You walk out, give a kiss, and go on.”
Their relationship will hit a slight bump on tonight...

Hey, all! Welcome back to the 90210 recaps! It's been a while. How long? Well, let's just say it was when Trevors, er, dinosaurs roamed the earth! What? I haven't made fun of Trevor Donovan's age in eons!
Speaking of Mr. Donovan, a number of AfterElton readers have suggested that I'm somehow in "the tank" for Trevor or have a thing for him. Look, I'm not blind. I recognize he's a totally hottie, but he's also really not my type. Tall, blond, Greek gods are pretty to look at, but just not my cup of tea. Frankly, I'd be much more interested in dating someone like Marco.
And the one time I dated someone who truly did look like he had just come down off of Mt. Olympus, it did not go well. When we first went out, he told me guys were always interested in him solely for the way he looked,...

From sexting to pill-swapping, this frenemy face-off turned ugly on the April 18 episode!
Forget Annie (Shenae Grimes) and Naomi’s (AnnaLynne McCord) bitter battle last season. Adrianna’s (Jessica Lowndes) new feud with Silver (Jessica Stroup) is like nothing we’ve ever seen! And while the cause of their war is questionable — Navid, really? — their tactics are undeniably twisted. In this episode alone, Ade tricked Silver into drinking Mexican tap water and Silver retaliated with irregular sunscreen. It may sound like everyday catty girl stuff, but hey, it’s 90210!
The biggest shocker of all — though not-so-shocking if you’re a spoiler junkie — came at the end of the episode, when Adrianna tampered with Silver’s bipolar medication! No good will come of this… but at least we’re all guaranteed another classic Silver breakdown in the coming weeks. Bottle-throwing, fire-starting, sex-taping Silver has been sorely missed since she was “cured” in season one.

Freddie Smith might not be a familiar face to 90210 fans yet, but the hot young actor will have a major role the rest of this season as Marco, Teddy's new love interest. Viewers caught a glimpse of Freddie in the last episode when Marco and Teddy first locked eyes, and the sparks were undeniable. We talked to Freddie about filming those awkward love scenes with Trevor Donovan, why he's proud to portray a gay teen on TV, and what's ahead on 90210's new Spring break episode, which airs tonight. He also weighed in on the season finale wedding rumors and hinted at an explosive confrontation ahead between Adrianna and Silver.
