The Mummy Box Office (Domestic): Here’s How Much It Earned On It Re-Release Opening Weekend(Photo Credit – IMDb)
Universal Pictures is bringing some classic movies back to the theatres in the United States. On Friday, the fan-favorite adventure movie The Mummy was re-released. People went into the theatres despite several other releases like Challengers and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire running there to boost the classic’s box office collections.
The movie will turn twenty-five this year and will always be one of the best movies about Egypt’s mummies in cinema history. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz‘s chemistry captivated us and will always remain close to our hearts. The film did well at the box office back then and has managed to bring some loyal audience to the theatres.
Earlier this month reports about The Mummy re-releasing in the theatres were all over the media.

Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy is celebrating its 25th birthday, with the first part being released in 1999. Since then, the film has become part of a series, with the release of The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Three movies were not enough for some fans, however, as many have been begging for more additions to the story, even though the last part was released more than ten years ago.

It would seem that their prayers have been heard, as the director of the first two films and the producer of the third, Stephen Sommers, revealed his thoughts on coming back for another movie.

Universal Pictures’ The Mummy franchise was a fan favorite when it starred Brendan Fraser as the leading man Rick O’Connell. The first two films in the trilogy were directed by Stephen Sommers, also starred Rachel Weisz and John Hannah, and were box office successes. However, the reboot starring Tom Cruise was a gigantic failure critically and commercially.
While Cruise’s film ended what Universal planned as a series of monster films with a shared universe, a recent fan-made trailer seemed to have followed it up with a new cast. The new trailer is titled The Mummy: Resurrection and sees Keanu Reeves take over the franchise to battle a new evil spirit buried in an Egyptian tomb.

As long as there is a Universal Studios, there will be Universal monster movies. Because though tastes may change from generation to generation, moviegoers will always have a hunger for new iterations of Dracula, Frankenstein, The Invisible Man and the Wolf Man.
Universal hasn't always had a good deal of luck with reimagining these legendary beasts over the years. The Stephen Sommers-spearheaded "Van Helsing" experiment died a very loud and expensive death in 2003, while the "Dark Universe" was infamously devoured by a black hole of disinterest when audiences rejected Tom Cruise's "The Mummy." But Universal scored a surprise hit with Leigh Whannell's $7 million-budgeted, Blumhouse-produced "The Invisible Man" in 2020, which inspired the studio develop projects that didn't have to be tethered to a shared universe.
Next up in the newfangled classic monsters lineup was set to be "The Wolf Man" starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Derek Cianfrance.

After spending years in development hell, during which time it passed through the hands of popular genre filmmakers like George A. Romero, Mick Garris, Clive Barker, and Joe Dante, a reboot of the 1932 Universal Monsters classic The Mummy made its way out into the world in 1999 with Deep Rising writer/director Stephen Sommers at the helm. Many see The Mummy (1999) as a beloved classic these days – so it makes sense that Universal has decided to give the film a theatrical re-release for its 25th anniversary. Actor Marlon Wayans is known for his stand-up comedy and comedic roles in films such as White Chicks and the Scary Movie franchise. Though the actor has ventured into dramatic territory with films such as Requiem For A Dream he was mostly known for his comedic endeavors as he gained fame with his sitcom with brother Shawn Wayans, The Wayans Bros.
Wayans also starred in the 2009 action film G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The Stephen Sommers directorial was an adaptation of the popular comics of the same name and starred Channing Tatum and Wayans in lead roles. Due to Wayans’ reputation as a comic actor, fans were reportedly concerned that the film would not be a serious adaptation of the action comics.

Some of the movies we talk about have opinions fueled by nostalgia if they are good or reputation if they are bad. Of course, everything is subjective when speaking about how you feel about a movie. It can be tied to events in your life that make you happy or sad. You can enjoy it on the strength of an actor, writer, or director you enjoy being involved or hate it for those exact reasons on a creator not being your favorite. Some things are irrefutable though such as box office or critical appraisal. Few fears are more universal than claustrophobia. Many of us have probably experienced that twinge of anxiety when elevator doors close behind us, but few of us have likely ever been down in the depths of a coal mine, where the elements at play have a potentially fatal outcome. This fear is what writer/director Mathieu Turi tries to tap into in The Deep Dark, to moderately successful results.

Pavan Grover, a writer and producer on the recent action thriller “97 Minutes” starring Alec Baldwin, has spoken out about standing firm with the star in the aftermath of “Rust.”
Grover, a Houston-based spinal surgeon with a passion for cinema, debuted as a writer in 2002 with “Unspeakable” starring Dennis Hopper, and served as a producer on “Odd Thomas” (2013), based on Dean Koontz’s novel and directed by Stephen Sommers (“The Mummy”).
Grover pitched the idea of “97 Minutes” — a ticking-clock thriller in which a hijacked airplane has 97 minutes before it runs out of fuel — when he met Baldwin serendipitously at Sundance in early 2021. Once Baldwin was attached, the project raised coin via presales, distribution and American and international debt financing, based on the actor’s value in those markets.

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” began its domestic box office journey with $7.2 million in Thursday previews. That is almost on par with the $7.5 million earned by “Fast X” but well below “Rise of the Beasts” ($8.8 million), “John Wick: Chapter 4” ($8.9 million), “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($17.4 million) and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($17 million). Just doing the straight Thursday-to-weekend math, Disney’s latest tentpole could land anywhere between $50 million and $65 million in its opening weekend.

In 1999, Universal Studios released The Mummy, a fresh take on the classic monster movie. The Stephen Sommers-directed film was a huge hit and turned Brendan Fraser into a bonafide movie star. The success of the first movie led to two sequels – The Mummy Returns in 2001, and Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008. And though a fourth film was slated for production, it was ultimately never released.
So whatever happened to this mysterious Mummy movie? Will it ever see the light of day, or will it remain forever hidden like an ancient relic? Let’s find out Wtf Happened to the Unmade Mummy: Rise of the Aztec Movie.
Before The Mummy’s release, Universal Studios had spent close to a decade trying to get a remake off the ground. In the late 1980s, producers James Jacks and Sean Daniel sought to modernize the 1932 classic and hoped to turn it into a potential franchise.

Brendan Fraser has done some daring things throughout his career. He donned a loin cloth and ran into trees for George of the Jungle. He put in a vulnerable performance under layers of fake flesh for the controversial The Whale. He starred in a movie with Pauly Shore.
But it’s that very affability that made Fraser such a beloved star. Whether running around with Bugs Bunny or listening longingly to legendary director James Whale, Fraser brought an openness that immediately brought the audience over to his side. The empathy he generates has been central to his recent resurgence, as fans across the internet cheered his appearances in the DC series Doom Patrol and the Steven Soderbergh release No Sudden Move. Heck, even those disgusted by the themes and visuals of The Whale still praise Fraser’s performance.

Brendan Fraser has recalled almost dying while starring in The Mummy.
The actor is continuing his awards campaign with just over a week to go until the Oscars, where he is nominated for Best Actor for his performance in The Whale.
On Tuesday (28 February), Fraser was a guest on The Kelly Clarkson Show, where he discussed shooting a sequence for the 1999 adventure film in which his character, Rick O’Connell, has a rope around his neck.
Fraser said the moment happened after director Stephen Sommers said: “Hey, it doesn’t really look like you’re choking – can you sell it?”
“You only got so far to go,” Fraser said, adding that he was standing on his toes.
However, during the next take, when “the camera swooped around”, Fraser says he “went up on the toes and the guy holding the rope above me pulled” the rope up “a little higher”.

“G.I. Joe is the codename for America’s daring, highly trained, special mission force.” So declares the voiceover in the theme song for G.I. Joe, the cartoon show that dominated after-school televisions in the 1980s. And by that criteria, Channing Tatum seems like the perfect choice to play Duke, leader of the Joes. Is he highly trained? Of course! Have you seen Step Up or Magic Mike? Is he daring? Anyone who caught his cameo in This is the End would give a resounding “yes”!
But the song also tells us that G.I. Joe “never gives up” and is “always there.” On that account, Tatum might fall a little bit short.
Recently, Tatum agreed to strap on a lie detector and answer questions for Vanity Fair. And to test the actor’s resolve, Vanity Fair went right for the tough questions: “You played Duke in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

The legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer helped to usher Disney into the franchise age with the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, a gung-ho historical epic chock full of charm that helped the House of Mouse keep up with the likes of “The Matrix” and “The Lord of the Rings.” The king of the high-concept blockbuster is all about what he once referred to as “the transportation business. We transport audiences from one place to another,” and the “National Treasure” movies, starring Nicolas Cage, are a perfect example of his ethos, albeit on a more family-friendly ethos than the work of his Don Simpson days.

International audiences fell in love with the handsome “Rick O’Connell and the sharp librarian Evelyn” and the Mummy’s ghost in the action-adventure movie The Mummy from 1999, which served as the first series of films.
The unusual duo fights against the undead Egyptian high priest Imhotep as he pursues his campaign to exterminate humanity in Stephen Sommers’ adaptation of the 1932 classic creature film.
It was combating the supernatural powers and terrifying plagues that unleash upon the land. This is entirely different from the 1930s and 1940s Universal horror films and Hammer horror films.
The Sommers mummy’s curse brilliantly incorporates humor, amazing effects, and exciting action sequences into the gripping Egyptian story, shifting their focus away from being short horror movies and toward adventure and romance.

Hollywood actor Brendan Fraser, who immortalised (pun intended) ‘The Mummy’ franchise, feels that the 2017 reboot of the film with Tom Cruise as the lead, was no “fun”. When Universal rebooted ‘The Mummy’ in 2017, Fraser wasn’t invited back to the party, reports Variety.
Instead, it was Tom Cruise who was left to deal with the consequences of unearthing an ancient tomb. Brendan told Variety: “It is hard to make that movie. The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in that film, was fun. That was what was lacking in that incarnation. It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. ‘The Mummy’ should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary.”
“I know how difficult it is to pull it off,” Fraser added. “I tried to do it three times,” he added.

Universal Pictures' infamous Dark Universe was not an inherently bad idea. The studio had enjoyed great success crossing over its classic monster movie series going back to the 1940s, at one point even pairing them with comedy duo Abbott and Costello for a run of films. Then, director Stephen Sommers gave "The Mummy" a fresh coat of paint with his 1999 remake, a delightfully cheeky mix of "Indiana Jones"-style action/adventure and supernatural horror that would spawn two sequels and a series of spinoff films about The Scorpion King (a role originated by Dwayne Johnson in 2001's "The Mummy Returns").
Since then, however, Universal has struggled to effectively re-imagine most of its other monsters for the 21st century. Many of its attempts to do so have seen the studio trying to repurpose these characters as superheroes, starting with Sommers' 2004 movie "Van Helsing" and continuing on to 2014's "Dracula Untold," a...

Good ol’ Brendan Fraser is on the path of a major comeback. Darren Aronofsky, who is no stranger to revitalizing an actor with a fallen career, cast Fraser in an intimately intense role in his new drama, The Whale. The Whale has been making the film festival rounds and, on more than one occasion, moved the audience into giving applause and standing ovations for the former action movie star.
Oscar buzz is already building for Fraser, and in an age of nostalgia kicks and legacy sequels, the actor is sure to find out how much he’s missed in his former popular roles. Variety reports on a question Fraser had been asked on whether he’d be interested in returning to the Mummy franchise or not. The star of the supernatural-adventure series responded, “I don’t know how it would work. But I’d be open to it if someone...

Brendan Fraser landed on the A-list thanks to his roll as the rollicking adventurer Rick O’Connell in “The Mummy” and its two sequels. And he hasn’t returned to the land of the undead since 2008’s “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,” but Fraser says he’s open to revisiting the franchise that made him a megastar.
“I don’t know how it would work,” he admits. “But I’d be open to it if someone came up with the right conceit.”
Fraser shared his thoughts on the film series as part of a Variety cover story on the making of “The Whale,” a drama about an obese man trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter. That film has landed him in the thick of the Oscar race.

Let it never be said that Brendan Fraser isn't willing to risk it all to inject a bit of realism into a role. Part of the reason we're seeing a "Brenaissance" revival at all today is because of the beloved memorability of his characters. From the delightfully naive George in "George of the Jungle" to the swashbuckling Rick O'Connell from "The Mummy." While his early typecasting as the handsome good guy often overshadowed just how much he made what could've easily been two-dimensional characters into lively and even nuanced ones.
But that kind of commitment almost got him into trouble while filming "The Mummy," a role he was only considered for because director Stephen Sommers saw him in "George of the Jungle." Early in the film Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) finds herself negotiating the release of O'Connell in order to enlist him in guiding her to the lost city of Hamunaptra.

Director Matthew Vaughn ("Kick-Ass") continues developing a sex/violence update of "Flash Gordon", based on the 1930's newspaper comic strip space hero by Alex Raymond, that inspired the creation of "Star Wars" by George Lucas:
Vaughn ("Kingsman: The Secret Service") was approached by Fox, before their Disney acquisition, to kick-off the new sci-fi series.
According to actor Sam Jones, who played 'Flash Gordon' in a 1980 feature, "Matthew Reilly, VP of production at Fox Studios, acquired the screenplay rights to 'Flash Gordon' last year, and he hired John Davis and his staff to write the script. They’re looking to bring out a sequel...

Double Walker (Colin West)
If one is looking for some post-Halloween chills, Colin West’s micro-budget ghost story Double Walker mostly fits the bill, albeit with a few stumbles. Approaching the supernatural with a more grounded feel akin to Paul Harrill’s Light From Light and David Lowery’s A Ghost Story, the film tracks a woman in specter form (a stand-out Sylvie Mix) who tracks down those responsible for her murder. While the production’s limitations can be painfully clear at times, with flat cinematography and flashbacks that feel far too on the nose, the film eventually coheres into a compelling look at the sins of humankind and what may come after death.

In 1999, Stephen Sommers re-introduced audiences into the world of The Mummy. A remake of the 1932 classic, the updated version saw Rick O’Connell stumble upon an ancient tomb that set loose a 3,000-year-old Mummy. Filled with vengeance and rage, the reincarnated Egyptian priest wreaks havoc on a world that wanted him dead. The Brendan Fraser vehicle was a roaring success in the mainstream, garnering $416.4 million worldwide. The surprise blockbuster had just the right amount of action, suspense, and thrills that excited audiences. A sequel, The Mummy Returns, had more of a mixed reaction from critics this time around;

Enemies of the State (Sonia Kennebeck)
This ambiguity is where Enemies of the State becomes a must-see because it exposes how skeptical we’ve become about the truth. As soon as you admit systems can be manipulated for selfish gain, there’s no denying that it isn’t happening right now in ways that make you the victim. Donald Trump epitomizes this phenomenon because he’s akin to God to his sycophants. They won’t even look at proof of his lies because they’ve decided that anything refuting his words has already been fabricated. So when DeHart earns the backing of other whistleblowers and the media, his story gets spun as one of a maligned hero to everyone that believes the government can’t be trusted.

If you’re like this writer and frequently check the IMDb page for The Mummy and Van Helsing director Stephen Sommers, you’ll see an anecdote under the trivia tab about how effects studio Industrial Light & Magic named a scale after him for the number of effects required in a scene. From lowest to highest there was “What the Shot Needs,” “What the Computers Can Handle,” “Oh my God, the Computers Are About to Crash,” and finally “What Stephen Wants.” Now that we’re at a state of cinema where it’s normal for a movie like Jungle Cruise to have every one of its principal characters look lovingly at a computer-generated animal, it’s hard not to consider the Indianapolis native’s mad vision somewhat prescient.

The debut trailer for Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins wants you to know that the upcoming film is on a new level, as its accompanying rap by A$AP Ferg declares. While the final verdict on that bold claim will be decided once the pandemic-delayed film finally drops in July, the franchise aspirations are quite apparent. Henry Golding’s black-clad ninja commando is complemented by signature characters such as Scarlett and Baroness, and a teased focus on the Hasbro toy property’s other popular ninja character, Storm Shadow.
G.I. Joe’s silent, ass-kicking mascot himself, Snake Eyes, as played by Crazy Rich Asians breakout Henry Golding, takes center stage in director Robert Schwentke’s relaunch of the film franchise adapting Hasbro’s 1980s-launched “A Real American Hero” iteration. It was last represented on the big screen by 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (directed by Stephen Sommers) and 2013’s G.

Fresh off the success of his two Mummy movies at the turn of the millennium, which both earned over $400 million at the box office, director Stephen Sommers decided to tackle the rest of Universal’s classic monsters for his follow-up feature. While the idea of Van Helsing sounded good on paper, reinventing Dracula’s arch-nemesis as a Vatican-sponsored monster hunter played by A-list star Hugh Jackman, the execution failed after the filmmaker stuffed the story to its bursting point, burning through Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Frankenstein, the Wolfman and Dracula himself in a mess of sub-par CGI and wall-to-wall action sequences that quickly became an assault on the senses.
The $160 million blockbuster disappointed critically and commercially, and all plans for a franchise were ultimately canned. However, the idea of a reboot never quite went away, with Tom Cruise attached to star at one stage before he made the ill-judged...

“Primal” begins the way that every movie should begin: With a bearded Nicolas Cage sitting in a tree somewhere deep in the Brazilian jungle while smoking a cigar, reading “Real Estate” magazine, and waiting for a rare white jaguar known as “El Fantasma Gato” (“The Ghost Cat”) to emerge from the trees and eat the goat carcass that’s strung up on the ground below. Sadly — if inevitably — this schlocky genre mishmash is all downhill from there, as
The best thing that “Primal” has going for it (beyond its truly incredible poster) is a premise that harkens back to the glory days of dopey ’90s action films — a beautiful time when B-movie directors were high out of their minds on the promise of CGI, and used such digital tools to add new dimensions to otherwise staid ideas. Over the last decade, Disney has found itself dipping increasingly into its own well of nostalgic favorites. Specifically, they’ve been taking their beloved animated classics, remaking them in live-action (or mostly live-action), and producing one blockbuster smash after another.
Not all of these live-action Disney remakes are good, and some of the bad ones have unexpectedly interesting ideas. And some of them actually predate the current (and seemingly never-ending) wave. Let’s take a look at all of the live-action remakes of Disney’s animated classics, going all the way back to the 1990s, to explore which films improved on the original and which ones came up short.

Once Universal’s terrible Mummy reboot with Tom Cruise in the lead came out, folks wished they’d have just gone ahead and made another one with Brendan Fraser – the actor himself included. From 1999 to 2008, Fraser starred in three horror/adventure movies which earned a grand total of $1.41 billion. You might think that Universal were fools for stopping at three, then, but it’s interesting to note that they very nearly made a fourth entry in the series.
In a piece on the future of the Universal Monsters franchise, The Hollywood Reporter recalls that a fourth film was proposed following the release of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Unfortunately, however, the studio ultimately elected to move forward with building a cinematic universe instead in an attempt to rival Marvel and DC. And as we all know, that didn’t work out as planned.

Director Matthew Vaughn ("Kick-Ass") is attached to develop a sex/violence update of "Flash Gordon", based on the 1930's newspaper comic strip hero by Alex Raymond, that inspired the creation of "Star Wars" by George Lucas:
Vaughn ("Kingsman: The Secret Service") was approached by Fox, before their Disney acquisition, to kick-off the new sci-fi series.
According to actor Sam Jones, who played 'Flash Gordon' in a 1980 feature, "Matthew Reilly, VP of production at Fox Studios, acquired the screenplay rights to 'Flash Gordon' last year, and he hired John Davis and his staff to write the script. They’re looking to bring out a sequel...
"I met with Matt and we are in talks about that. I’m very excited. A lot of people over the years, including Stephen Sommers and Neil H Moritz, have acquired the screenplay rights, but for whatever reason they did not...

Although it may be difficult to believe, this month marks 20 years since 1999's The Mummy was unleashed in theaters, and we celebrate by discussing the horror remake and its sequels on a new episode of Corpse Club!
Instilling a lifelong fear of scarab beetles in a generation of moviegoers, The Mummy (1999) celebrates its 20th anniversary on May 7th, and we commemorate the infectiously fun remake of the 1932 Universal Monster movie on this episode of Daily Dead's official podcast! Listen as Corpse Club co-hosts Tamika Jones, Derek Anderson, and Jonathan James take a deep dive into the action, adventure, and horror of 1999's The Mummy, including writer/director Stephen Sommers' Indiana Jones-esque vision for the remake, the film's effective blend of CGI and practical effects, and the movie's mix of slapstick comedy and bone-chilling (and life-sucking) horror. The co-hosts also discuss the chemistry of the film's eclectic cast, from...

When Disney isn’t busy pumping out “Star Wars” spin-offs or Marvel superhero sequels and origin stories, the studio seems bound and determined to recycle every one of its animated classics into a live-action or heavily CGI version. Back in 1994, the House of Mouse did its first live-action redo based on 1967’s “The Jungle Book.” Directed by Stephen Sommers, it took in an Ok $42 million at the box office. The big draw was Glenn Close as the malevolent puppy-snatcher Cruella de Vil. The doggy romance hit the spot, grossing $320.7 million worldwide — although its sequel, “102 Dalmatians,...
