“Mozart in the Jungle” is ending its four-season run, marking the first cancellation under Amazon’s new chief Jennifer Salke, the streaming network said.
“We are so proud of the four seasons we made of this show and are grateful to the cast, crew, fans and Amazon for writing this symphony with us. We hope people will keep finding the show for years to come,” executive producers Paul Weitz, Will Graham, Roman Coppola and Jason Schwartzman said in a statement.

Salke — who stepped in to oversee all television and film production at Amazon in February after serving six years as entertainment president at NBC — has voiced her intent to pivot Amazon from niche projects to big-budget epics on the scale of “Game of Thrones.”
The comedy-drama series was inspired by “Mozart in the Jungle: Sex, Drugs, and Classical Music,” the 2005 memoir of oboist Blair Tindall. Gael Garcia Bernal, Lola Kirke, Saffron Burrows, Hannah Dunne and Peter Vack also star.
The first season of “Mozart” was both a critical darling and a hit with viewers, winning two Golden Globes — one for Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical and a second for Garcia Bernal for Best Actor — and scoring a 95 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 73 out of 100 on Metacritic.

Get ready to unwrap a very special present this holiday season when the much-anticipated new series, Mozart in the Jungle, launches December 23rd.
Based on the memoir by New York Symphony musician Blair Tindall, Mozart in the Jungle: Sex, Drugs, and Classical Music, the original series was created by cousins Roman Coppola and Jason Schwartzman, whose grandfather, Carmine Coppola, was a flautist and an orchestra conductor before he went on to compose music for his son’s films — including the Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now.
Growing up surrounded by musicians and performers, the Coppola cousins embraced Mozart as an opportunity to shine the spotlight on the upstairs-downstairs lives of world class musicians. Through the eyes of a young oboist named Hailey (Gone Girl's Lola Kirke) and brash new maestro, Rodrigo (Motorcycle Diaries’ Gael García Bernal), we get to see the glamour and grit, the excitement and the struggle,...

Last week, Amazon Video announced that it would pick up four of the pilots it debuted back in February. Of the five pilots not intended for children, only The Rebels failed to make the cut; Mozart in the Jungle, Transparent, The After, and Bosch will all become full series. The four new series will join Alpha House (which has been picked up for a second season) and Betas (whose fate is still undecided), the two original scripted comedies that debuted on Amazon last year. While Alpha House in particular drew some praise, Amazon's first efforts haven't drawn the same sort of mainstream attention as the series offered by its closest competitor, Netflix. Judging by the quality of the green-lit pilots, that's about to change. When taken together, the chosen four have the quality, entertainment value, and star power to take Amazon to the next level. The standout from among Amazon's...

In its second round of pilots, which are uploaded for users to watch and comment on, Amazon Studios has chosen which are going to move on and become full-blown series. From the five that were originally streamed to users, four have been given series orders, which is a higher amount than the last round of pilots. And, finally, Amazon’s Instant Video is joining the big leagues by having its own original dramas to compete with Netflix’s House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. Fingers crossed these turn into big hits for Amazon, but only because I don’t subscribe to either it or Netflix, so I really have no horse in this race.
As reported by Deadline, Amazon’s first drama is The After, from X-Files creator Chris Carter, marking his return to series television (even though we all know what Amazon is offering isn’t technically television,...

Dramatic comedy, Mozart in the Jungle was written by Oscar-nominated writer and director Roman Coppola (Moonrise Kingdom, The Darjeeling Limited), actor and musician Jason Schwartzman (Saving Mr. Banks, Moonrise Kingdom, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), and Tony-nominated writer and director Alex Timbers (Peter and the Starcatcher). The project is based on the memoir Mozart in the Jungle by Blair Tindall. Mozart in the Jungle is all about sex, drugs—and classical music—and shows that what happens behind the curtains at the symphony can be just as captivating as what happens on stage. Paul Weitz (About a Boy, Admission) directed the pilot and executive produced. Gael Garcia Bernal, Saffron Burrows, Lola Kirke, Malcolm McDowell, Bernadette Peters and Peter Vack star.

On Wednesday (Feb. 6), Amazon served up its second helping of pilots, including projects from X-Files creator Chris Carter and author Michael Connelly. Feedback from viewers will help decide which of the five get a series order (i.e. become the next Alpha House).
Wondering which are worth your time? Our critics weigh in:
The After
X-Files creator Chris Carter’s first show in over a decade tells a familiar story (the apocalypse!) from an intriguing new perspective, taking a ground-level view of a mysterious end-of-the-world event. The After centers on eight people who all have pulp-novel job descriptions: Sleazy Lawyer,...

Amazon put up ten new pilots today: five kid shows, two dramas, and three comedies. Of the comedies, one is dumb, one has promise, and one is magnificent. Mozart in the JungleThe setup: The show is loosely inspired by oboist Blair Tindall’s memoir of the same name, and is set within the party scene of classical music. The show follows up-and-coming oboist Hailey; the symphony’s retiring conductor Thomas; and the audacious, young incoming conductor Rodrigo. The cast: Lola Kirke stars as Hailey, and if she looks familiar that’s because she resembles her sister, Girls’ Jemima Kirke. Malcolm McDowell plays the gruff outgoing conductor, and Gael García Bernal plays the sexy new guy. Bernadette Peters also has a small role. The show was created by Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman, and two-time Tony nominee Alex Timbers. How is it? The idea of a show about the secretly debauched world...
