If there ever was a based-on-a-true-story movie that called for a sequel, it’s “The Social Network,” director David Fincher and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s 2010 classic about the founding of Facebook. The early years covered in the film were just the beginning of the Mark Zuckerberg story before Facebook (now Meta) became one of the most powerful companies on the planet, capable of shaping the future of democracy for the worse.
So it’s no wonder that Sorkin is working on a sort of sequel to “The Social Network.”
During an interview on the showbiz news podcast “The Town,” Sorkin was asked how he thinks Facebook and social media, in general, have impacted democracy in the 14 years since “The Social Network” came out.
After exchanging a look with his publicist, Sorkin told host Matthew Belloni and guest co-host Peter Hamby that he’s planning to write a movie about this topic.

The films in the running for the 2024 Best Film Editing Oscar are “Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our current odds indicate that “Oppenheimer” (31/10) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “Anatomy of a Fall” (4/1), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), “Poor Things” (9/2), and “The Holdovers” (9/2).
Having previously bagged trophies for “Raging Bull” (1981), “The Aviator” (2005), and “The Departed” (2007), Thelma Schoonmaker could now become this category’s first quadruple champion by winning for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The 84-year-old is also the first cutter to reach a total of nine nominations, with all but her first for “Woodstock” (1971) having come for films directed by Martin Scorsese. Their other collaborations that brought her academy attention are “Goodfellas” (1991), “Gangs of New York” (2003), “Hugo” (2012), and “The Irishman” (2020).

One of the biggest pop culture moments of the 80s was when a large group of pop artists came together for a special one-time song dedicated to raising awareness and helping to end famine in Africa. That song, “We Are the World,” was amazingly stacked with talent, including Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, Harry Belafonte, Kenny Loggins, Dionne Warwick, and Huey Lewis. A documentary from Netflix recounts the story of how the song came together with The Greatest Night in Pop. The film is also scheduled to screen at the Sundance Film Festival this year, with Lionel Richie in tow.
Netflix’s description of the documentary reads,
“On January 25, 1985, dozens of the biggest names in music convened at a studio in Los Angeles, checked their egos at the door and recorded a song to benefit African famine relief that would alter global pop culture history.

Exclusive: Netflix has set a January 29 streaming premiere date for The Greatest Night in Pop, a feature doc just announced as world premiering at the Sundance Film Festival on the 19th of this month.
Directed by award winner Bao Nguyen (Be Water), the film takes viewers back to January 25, 1985, when dozens of the biggest names in music convened at a Los Angeles studio and checked their egos at the door amidst the recording of a song to benefit African famine relief — one that would alter global pop culture history. Chronicled in the doc is the massive undertaking to assemble the world’s most impressive supergroup in a time before cell phones and email. That group of artists, led by the song’s co-writers and two of the most significant musicians of the 20th century — Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie — came from different worlds but united to record “We Are the World.

More than a century after its first screening, the Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard is coming back to life following a restoration process that kept it dark for three years. But this isn’t the storied venue’s first makeover.
Sid Grauman’s homage to Egyptian culture — which predates his Chinese Theatre on the same street by five years — debuted in 1922 and hosted the first Hollywood premiere in history, for Douglas Fairbanks’ Robin Hood. After the theater shut down in the early 1990s and was nearly destroyed by the 1994 Northridge earthquake, it was purchased for a dollar in 1996 by the nonprofit American Cinematheque. A grand reopening followed two years later, attended by Charlton Heston and Quentin Tarantino.
“This is the theater where Hollywood was born, and now it’s becoming our industry’s equivalent of the Getty,” film producer Steve Tisch told The Hollywood Reporter at the time.

Netflix and the American Cinematheque will reveal the extensive restoration of Hollywood’s iconic Egyptian Theater with a Nov. 9 screening of “The Killer” followed by a Q&a with director David Fincher.
The Egyptian theater, which turns 101 years old Wednesday, has undergone a full restoration including the removal of the previous balcony, reconfiguring the lobby, clearing the spacious courtyard and all-new seating, state-of-the-art lighting and Dolby Atmos sound.
Originally built during the silent film era, the movie palace is known as the birthplace of the red carpet and location of Hollywood’s first movie premiere, for “Robin Hood” in 1922.
Netflix acquired the theater three years ago and partnered with the American Cinematheque to restore the historic landmark, which was in need of remodeling due to age, later additions and earthquake damage. Netflix and the American Cinematheque will reopen Hollywood’s iconic The Egyptian Theatre next month after more than three years of renovations and just in time to showcase the streamer’s awards lineup.
The historic landmark, built during the silent era, has been dark since movie theaters across the country shuttered in March 2020. Netflix closed a deal to buy the Egyptian in May 2020 and committed to a major restoration (the pact was first revealed in 2019).
The Egyptian will remain the home of the American Cinematheque. The general plan is for the art organization to independently program movies Friday through Sunday. Netflix will use the venue for screenings, premieres and special events Monday through Thursday, in addition to making select screenings of its movies available to the public. There will be times when the two swap programming dates (as reflected below).

If the first half of Netflix’s Harry & Meghan doc series didn’t quite match the high expectations for shocking revelations, the streamer certainly seems to be throwing its weight behind the second volume when it comes to the sort of explosive, headline-generating content many had been looking for.

Documentaries are part of the foundational understanding we gather and build about our world. They help us to better comprehend recent or historical events, and bring new clarity to topics we thought we knew inside and out. It seems as though this is the goal in mind for "Harry & Meghan," the new Netflix series that will see the former royals telling their own story of their marriage and the trials they subsequently dealt with through the royal family as a result.
The sneak peek, which debuted on Thursday, December 1, mostly shows us black-and-white photos of the couple seemingly falling and being in love. We see them through different strides in their relationship, but finally, color comes into the picture to represent the now in footage shot specifically for the series. "When the stakes are this high, does it make more sense to hear our story from us?" Meghan asks in closing as the trailer concludes.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are ready to share their side of the story.
The royal family members relinquished their Royal Highness titles in January 2020 and relocated to Montecito, California. Prince Harry infamously told Oprah during a CBS interview that the reason they parted ways with the senior royal family roles stemmed in part from the experience with his mother, Princess Diana.
“I asked for calm from the British tabloids,” the Duke of Sussex said (via Marie Claire). “Once as a boyfriend, once as a husband, and once as a father…My father and brother, they are trapped. They don’t get to leave.”
Now, Harry is welcoming the cameras on his and wife Meghan’s terms. A Netflix docuseries, produced in association with their production company Archewell Productions, is coming soon to the streamer.

The 2022 Emmy nominees for main title design are Hulu’s Candy and Only Murders in the Building; Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop; and Apple TV+’s Foundation, Lisey’s Story, Pachinko and Severance.
Here’s how the main titles design category has looked between 2002 and 2021:
Winners by Genre
TV Academy voters strongly favor drama series, which earned the vast majority of nominations and wins in the past two decades
Victory, Multiplied Game of Thrones opening titles
The category’s rules stipulate that titles for a program not in its first season must be substantially changed (at least 75 percent different) to be eligible. HBO’s Game of Thrones is the only series to win twice for main title design, for its first season in 2011 and its final season in 2019.
Emmys’ Top Designers
These creatives boast multiple Emmys to their name for their dramatic title sequences.

When “Peacemaker” premiered in January 2022, no one quite realized the power of John Cena’s hips. Yes, exuberant tweets were sent, explainers were written, and charts were topped. But the invigorating dance routine that introduced every episode of James Gunn’s HBO Max comedy wasn’t an isolated event. The addictive beat of Wig Wam’s “Do Ya Wanna Taste It?” set off a flurry of outstanding opening credits sequences. Suddenly, within a few short months, there were a number of unskippable main title treatments on the market, all vying for their place next to iconic TV starting points like “Cheers,” “Friends,” and “The X-Files,” as well as more recent breakthroughs like “Succession,” “BoJack Horseman,” and “Bob’s Burgers.”
These weren’t just the best credits of the year. They were some of the best credits ever seen.
And in a few more months, the Television Academy will have a chance to honor five of them.

Depicting an ancestral journey was key for main title designers Angus Wall and Nadia Tzuo in developing the title sequence for Apple TV Plus’ series, “Pachinko,” a show that traces the fate of a Korean family and spans multiple countries, decades and generations.
At the heart of the journey is Solomon Baek, played by Jin Ha, a young employee at an international firm. He returns to his roots, reconnecting with his father Mozasu (Soji Arai), owner of a pachinko game parlor, and grandmother Sunja (Youn Yuh-jung), with a lens on the younger Sunja (Minha Kim and Jeon Yuna), who leaves everything behind for a new life in Japan, a country that wants no part of her.
Based on Min Jin Lee’s rich novel, the show, which premieres March 25 on Apple TV Plus, has been adapted by series creator Soo Hugh, who scripted the title sequence into her drafts. The...

The films in the running for the 2022 Best Film Editing Oscar are “Don’t Look Up,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “The Power of the Dog,” and “tick, tick… Boom!.” Our current odds indicate that “Dune” (82/25) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “The Power of the Dog” (19/5), “Don’t Look Up” (9/2), “King Richard” (9/2), and “tick, tick… Boom!” (9/2).
Four of the six individual cutters up for the gold this year are past nominees, with both Pamela Martin (“King Richard”) and Andrew Weisblum having now received their first notices in over a decade. As the respective editors of “The Fighter” and “Black Swan,” they initially challenged each other in 2011 but were ultimately bested by Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall (“The Social Network”). Weisblum shares his current nomination with first-timer Myron Kerstein. The other newcomer in the group is Peter Sciberras (“The Power of the Dog”).

Matt Reeves’s “The Batman” is finally out in theaters, and reviews have been pretty great. A lot of credit for that must go to the creative artisans who helped Reeves attain his vision for the Dark Knight. To say that the crafts of Reeves’s collaborators are fully on display in this movie would be an understatement, especially when you consider that multiple craftspeople involved with the movie are currently up for Oscars later this month.
“The Batman” was one of the many productions that famously got shut down due to Covid after it began filming in January 2020. It had to turn off cameras for six months until pandemic protocols were in place, but you’re not likely to be able to tell from watching it.

While David Fincher’s preference for filming multiple takes puts pressure on his cast and production crew (see Amanda Seyfried’s revelation that one “Mank” sequence was filmed nearly 200 times), it might create the most challenges for his editors. How do you stay sane while crafting the perfect David Fincher scene from dozens upon dozens of take? Patience helps. Editor Angus Wall has worked with Fincher on nearly every film from “Seven” through “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” winning Oscars for Best Film Editing thanks to his work on “The Social Network” and “Dragon Tattoo.” Over the years, Wall has developed the perfect method for editing through Fincher’s multiple takes.
Speaking to The Ringer, Wall said more times than not he is editing together multiple takes of a different scene into one finished version as opposed to just using Fincher’s final take or most preferred single take.

For Apple TV+ drama The Morning Show, Angus Wall and Hazel Baird designed a main title sequence that was at once visually abstract and thematically rich, speaking to the various challenging facets of life in the high-pressure world of morning news.
Created by Jay Carson and Kerry Ehrin, the series centers on a popular breakfast news program broadcast out of New York, which is rocked to its core when one of its longtime anchors is fired, due to accusations of sexual misconduct.
Set to Benjamin Clementine’s “Nemesis,” the show’s title sequence centers on spheres of different colors and sizes, interacting in a series of playful vignettes. For Wall and Baird, two of the creative directors behind Elastic—a design studio launched in 2008, which this year claimed four Emmy nominations out of seven for Outstanding Main Title Design—the challenge of The Morning Show was to make sure that...

A million dollars isn’t cool anymore. You know what’s cool? A seal of approval from Quentin Tarantino. That’s what’s cool. It’s also what The Social Network received nearly 10 years after its release. Making a splash at the box office—if not with Oscar voters—the arguably first major film about the millennial generation was a pop culture touchstone in 2010 that’s aged like fine wine. With its haunting visuals masterminded by director David Fincher, razor sharp dialogue from Aaron Sorkin, and moody score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, The Social Network remains a potent work, and clearly a favorite for the Pulp Fiction writer-director.
“It is number one because it’s the best, that’s all!” Tarantino told Premiere (via The Guardian). “It crushes the competition.” Tarantino’s suggestion of the competition also seems to be a thinly veiled reference to how the movie...

Credit sequences may seem like a time for viewers to grab some popcorn before the show, but enjoying the complex packages — carefully fashioned to transition viewers into the world on-screen — will add to the enjoyment of a movie or a TV show, or even a video game.
Richie Adams, founder of River Road Creative, whose most recent credit work was on the Brad Pitt starrer “Ad Astra,” says part of good design is ensuring the credits reflect the production’s narrative, themes and style. While watching an early cut of the project, Adams picked up on the repeated use of camera flares in the cinematography and pitched the idea of setting the credits to an arrangement of those flares. “At times, that offers an unsettling feel,” explains Adams, “and at other times, they’re just beautiful.”

It’s always an honor to be one of the titles that premiere on opening night at the Sundance Film Festival, and this year there were eight. Three are available for acquisition: Next selection “Summertime,” Midnight’s “Bad Hair,” and World documentary “The Painter and the Thief” The other five were already spoken for: Music Box had “The Perfect Candidate,” while Netflix had two documentaries and a feature, and Showtime offered the first four episodes of a docuseries. There’s the Barack and Michelle Obama executive-produced “Crip Camp,” the Taylor Swift documentary “Miss Americana” and the French-language “Cuties,” along with Showtime’s “Love Fraud.” And with that outsized presence of what once seemed anomalous — TV and streamers, at Sundance! — there’s a measure of reckoning for the festival long defined as a marketplace for theatrical distributors to pick up indie breakouts and low-budget hidden gems.
Sundance itself is well aware of the potential discrepancy.

The new three-part documentary series “Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez” examines the infamous case of NFL star and former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, who was convicted of murder in 2015.
The Netflix documentary directed by Geno McDermott features courtroom footage, interviews with Hernandez’s former teammates and even some of Hernandez’s private phone calls from prison, all with the aim of getting into the mind of a convicted killer.
“No one has allegedly murdered two people and then played an entire season as a professional athlete,” an interview subject says in a new trailer for the series.
