Dino Danelli, the drummer who was the backbone of blue-eyed soul hitmakers The Rascals (nee The Young Rascals) has died at age 78.
Specifics were scant on what happened and where/when. However, group spokesperson Joe Russo wrote on Danelli’s Facebook page that the drummer struggled with coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure, requiring an angioplasty over a decade earlier.
His bandmate, guitarist Gene Cornish, paid tribute to Danelli on Facebook.
“It is with a broken heart that I must tell you of the passing of Dino Danelli,” Cornish wrote Thursday on social media. “He was my brother and the greatest drummer I’ve ever seen. I am devastated at this moment. Rest in peace, Dino; I love you brother.”

Randy Rhoads’ masterful guitar solos and unique approach to heavy-metal riffing, which drew more influence from Bach than Black Sabbath, made him an instant guitar legend with the release of “Blizzard of Ozz,” Ozzy Osbourne’s 1980 solo debut. Rhoads had spent the previous couple of years struggling in an early lineup of Quiet Riot — the two records he recorded with them came out only in Japan — so the success of the album and its hit single, “Crazy Train,” was a feat both for him and for Osbourne, who was at...

One of Eddie Van Halen’s iconic “Frankenstrat” guitar — which the rocker gifted to late Mountain guitarist Leslie West — is set to hit the auction block Sunday.
The “Kramer Striker/Ripley Rosewood Fingerboard Frankenstrat Solid Body Electric Guitar” — one of an arsenal of custom-made guitars that Eddie Van Halen designed and “spray-painted and striped by hand, presumably by hand,” Heritage Auctions said — was made for the guitarist in 1984, and was believed to be Van Halen’s backup guitar on both the tours in support of 1984 and 5150.

Foo Fighters have loudly rung in the new year with their new song “No Son of Mine,” the latest single from the band’s upcoming album Medicine at Midnight.
While the laidback first single “Shame Shame” showed off Foo Fighters’ funky side, “No Son of Mine” finds the band returning to their big-energy arena rock stylings with fiery riffs reminiscent of Heart, Motorhead and Queen’s “Stone Cold Crazy.”

West’s publicist confirmed his death to the L.A. Times, saying the musician’s cause of death was cardiac arrest.
Mountain formed on Long Island, New York in 1969 and released three albums before they broke up in 1972 — though they’ve reunited frequently since and released a number of other projects including 1974’s Avalanche, 1985’s Go for Your Life, 1996’s Man’s World, 2002’s Mystic Fire and 2007’s Masters of War. Six years ago, Marcus King felt lost. A long-haired, pot-smoking kid going to school in the small town of Piedmont, South Carolina, he struggled to fit in — he hated sports and missed enough classes to nearly be expelled for truancy. “I have nothing good to say about Piedmont, no good memories,” says the guitarist. “They were trying to put me away, trying to put me into a juvenile detention center, trying to shave my head, put me in a jail. A group of international films that seem partially united by the theme of global awareness, this program is more of a mixed bag than most. Sadly, I was unable to preview the first film in the show, 2minutes40seconds, by Han Ok-hee. It’s from 1975, and it is a rare screening of work by the Kaidu Club, a feminist experimental film collective from South Korea. Considering just how little Korean avant-garde film gets screened at all, much less from the seventies, I’d say Han’s film is a categorical must-see.Hrvoji, Look at Your From the TowerRyan Ferko has presented a number of films in festivals past, although those previous entries have been co-directed by Faraz and Parastoo Anoushahpour. They are both listed in the credits of Hrvoji as collaborators, but Ferko is credited as the sole filmmaker, and this in itself is intriguing. Although the trio's films have been quite impressive,...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Presidents' Day weekend was an interesting one at the box office, and as with most holiday weekends, it was particularly difficult to figure out how things might fare, other than The Lego Batman Movie, which remained at #1 with almost $45 million over the four-day weekend. Fifty Shades Darker followed with $21.3 million, about a 50% drop. Last week, I thought that the Ice Cub comedy Fist Fight would beat The Great Wall, although it seemed like it could be a close race. Nope. Matt Damon’s action epic came in third place with $21.6 million, which is a couple million more than my original prediction, but The Fist Fight fell short of my prediction by almost $10 million, grossing $14.5 million in its first four days.

The Sundance Film Festival announced its four main 2015 narrative and competition slates on Wednesday (December 3) and the Us Documentary Competition field is packed with Oscar winners and returning Park City favorites. Leading the way, at least to some degree, is last year's Documentary Oscar winner Morgan Neville, whose "Twenty Feet From Stardom" was one of the openers at the 2013 Festival. Neville and Robert Gordon co-directed "Best of Enemies," which looks at the 1968 televised debates between Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley Jr. "The Cove" Oscar winner Louie Psihoyos is back with "Racing Extinction," which focuses on endangered species and, yes, mass extinction from a variety of viewpoints. Also sporting an Oscar, for the short "Saving Face," is Daniel Junge, who chronicles the life of Evel Knievel in "Being Evel." Both "The Cove" and "Twenty Feet From Stardom" played at Sundance, which has been a fairly reliable feeder for Oscar winners in recent years,...

Legendary Mountain frontman Leslie West has been in the news a lot over the last few months. Due to some serious health issues he had his lower right leg removed to save his life. Thankfully back in relatively good shape now, West has been busy promoting his new album, the truly excellent Unusual Suspects featuring guest musicians Zakk Wylde, Slash, Billy Gibbons, Steve Lukather, and Joe Bonamassa.
I spoke to the man whose enormous stature (both physically and musically) in the world of rock has never been in question just as he is about to embark on his latest tour, albeit with some adjustments.
Geeks of Doom: You’ve had some well publicized health issues recently. How are you?
Leslie West: I’m pretty good. I’m doing quite better. Got fitted for my prosthetic the other day and...it’s not as easy as one would think, [you don’t] just snap it on and,...

Mountain guitarist Leslie West's lower right leg has been amputated due to complications from diabetes. The musician was rushed to a Biloxi, Mississippi hospital over the weekend after his leg began to swell and his foot went into septic shock. West's wife Jenni explained that doctors tried in vain to save the rocker's limb, but eventually were forced to amputate in order to save his life. Jenni told Reuters: "The nursing staff and doctors have taken excellent care of him and should be called angels for their efforts and tenderness they showed us in this time of crisis." West is now resting comfortably and in stable (more)...

Rough few days for friends of Howard Stern. First, minion Benjy Bronk was threatened with physical harm after interrupting Anthony Weiner's farewell announcement. Now, one of the show's favorite musical guests, guitarist Leslie West, has just undergone an emergency amputation to, in the words of his reps, "save his life." According to a statement from his reps, West, 65, had flown in to Mississippi over the weekend to perform with his band, Mountain. On Sunday, his leg began to swell. Because he is diabetic, West was immediately taken to the emergency room, where he made "the decision to go through an amputation in order to save his life," publicist Steve Karas and manager Bob Ringer...

Bud Prager, a longtime label executive and manager who fostered the rock bands Mountain, Foreigner and Damn Yankees, died Dec. 22 of esophageal cancer at his home in Montauk, N.Y. He was 79.
In the 1960s, the native New Yorker formed independent label Windfall Records with Felix Pappalardi, who produced the three Cream records. The record company grew into Windfall Music Enterprises, which included artist management, publishing, production and recording divisions.
Pappalardi and Prager soon brought together the players for Mountain; the band gained popularity after an appearance at Woodstock in 1969 and the single"Mississippi Queen" from its debut album the following year.
After Mountain disbanded, Prager brought together guitarist Leslie West and drummer Corky Laing of Mountain and Cream bassist Jack Bruce to form "supergroup" West, Bruce & Laing in 1972. They lasted two albums.
In 1976, Prager began a 17-year management affiliation with Foreigner. After repeatedly being turned down by all the major labels,...
