Top Gun: Maverick took the marquee Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) honor and Everything Everywhere All At Once landed the top Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy) award at the 73rd Ace Eddie Awards Sunday. Hosted by Ashley Nicole Black, the winners were announced live in a ceremony at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
Eddie Hamilton, Ace, edited Maverick, a film that earned Tom Cruise the Producer’s Guild’s David O. Selznick award at last week’s PGA Awards. The honor puts Hamilton and Top Gun: Maverick in frontrunner status in the Best Film Editing Oscar race, for which both Maverick and Everything Everywhere are nominated.
Since the turn of the 21st century, the Eddie winner for theatrical drama has gone on to score the Academy Award for Best Editing 13 of 22 times — but none of the past three years. In 2022, King Richard took that Ace trophy, but Dune went home with the Oscar.

Capitol Records has condemned a former executive’s “reprehensible and appalling” remarks calling Tina Turner the N-word as revealed in the new HBO documentary “Tina.”
“The incident that John Carter describes in the HBO documentary, ‘Tina,’ would have occurred 40 years ago when Capitol was under different ownership and management, and we’re only now learning of those reprehensible and appalling comments,” a Capitol Music Group spokesperson told TheWrap exclusively. “Capitol Music Group is proud of our association with Tina Turner and the role we play in ensuring her music will continue to inspire new generations for decades to come.”
“Tina” features audio from a 2009 interview in which John Carter, the Capitol producer, songwriter and A&r representative credited with reviving Turner’s career in the early 1980s, details the pushback against the singer after he signed her to the label.

At this point, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ governors election looks more like a round-up than a race; more than 180 members have declared their interest in filling 17 contested spots on the 54-member Board of Governors.
Voting in the run-off round starts on Monday and ends May 18. That will narrow the present field to a maximum of four nominees per branch in the final round, which follows.
For now, there are on average about 11 candidates in the running for each slot. In the casting directors and costume design branches, only three members have declared for each slot. But not so in the actors branch, where 17 members — including Brie Larson, Jacki Weaver and Meg Ryan — are vying for the spot being vacated by termed-out Tom Hanks; or the producers, executives, and public relations branches, all of which have a bumper crop of candidates. Marvin Levy, currently a governor in the public relations branch,...

As stated in my introductory post [1] for Killer Imports [2], I wanted to write some posts other than reviews. This post addresses a topic that I’ve always wondered about. I was tempted to add the word "always" to the title of this article, because I can’t think of a single Asian director who has succeeded in Hollywood. When I say Asian, I should qualify that I mean directors who were not born on American soil. And when I say succeed, I mean in both critical and financial terms, and more often than not, these two ways of judging movies don’t go hand in hand. And of course, I’m generalizing. I admit I am also comparing their Hollywood films with the films they have made on their own soil. In a sense, this article is probably being unfair. In some cases, these Asian directors are hired to recreate...

Christopher Guest is taking it up to 11 for Fox's sequel to "Night at the Museum."
The "Spinal Tap" star has joined the cast as Ivan the Terrible for the comedy adventure, officially titled "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian."
Also joining the cast are Jon Bernthal (Al Capone), Bill Hader (Gen. George Armstrong Custer) and French actor Alain Chabat (Napoleon).
The film, directed by Shawn Levy, reunites lead Ben Stiller with castmates Robin Williams, Ricky Gervais and Owen Wilson.
Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, who penned both "Museum" films, will make a cameo in the sequel, playing the Wright brothers.
"Museum" was a boxoffice success for Fox, grossing $574 million worldwide. With the Smithsonian as the centerpiece, the studio and Levy kicked the current production up a notch by getting the rare chance to film portions of the movie in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington.
The film is shooting in Vancouver, with a behind-the-scenes team that includes director of photography John Schwartzman ("Pearl Harbor"), editors Don Zimmerman and Dean Zimmerman ("Rush Hour 3"), production designer Claude Pare ("The Aviator") and costume designer Marlene Stewart ("Tropic Thunder").

Jim Carrey has reconnected his comedy wire with "Liar Liar", an electric, warm-spirited merriment that melds Carrey's hyperkinetic talents with a heart-tugging story. Sagely directed by Tom Shadyac, "Liar Liar" should chart higher and higher at the boxoffice for Universal. In truth, "Liar" will be a colossal hit, appealing to kids on spring break as well as every species of Carrey's wide and nutty following.
In "Liar Liar", Carrey plays Fletcher, a trial lawyer so smooth, brazen and utterly unencumbered by notions of fair play that one suspects that O.J. will use the role as a yardstick in selecting his appeals attorney. Outrageously successful in his professional life, Fletcher has drawn a hung jury in his personal life. His ex-wife (Maura Tierney) is on the verge of remarrying while his 5-year-old son, Max (Justin Cooper), whom he adores, has reached an age in which workaholic Dad's absence is noted. Making partner is Fletcher's top priority, and professional white lies are a day-to-day necessity for the attorney.
While white lies are considered largely innocuous in the hard, adult world, to his young son they are tantamount to betrayal. When Fletcher misses Max's birthday because of a heavy workload (banging a horny partner), Max makes a wish: that Daddy will not utter an untruth for 24 hours.
In Paul Guay and Stephen Mazur's slyly subversive scenario, the glad-handing, unctuous lawyer, whose prior mouthings consisted solely of self-serving deceptions, now can only tell the truth.
And, as we all know, a little truth can go a long way, especially in Fletcher's case, as he immediately gets himself into hot water with a candid assessment of his boss' performance in the sack. While dishing out a devilishly delirious series of quicky sillies, having Fletcher speak the truth to assorted panhandlers and barristers, Guay and Mazur have wrapped these instant hilarities around a larger theme, that honesty is the best policy, and, best of all, have tied it to Fletcher's genuine love for his child.
What truly makes "Liar Liar" work, however, is Shadyac's inspired sense of comic proportion. While torquing the hilarities to the max, he never loses sight of the story's important human side. His blend of farce with heart is perfect.
With his protean pyrotechnical prowess coming out both sides of his mouth and form, Carrey has never been better - that is to say funnier, or more controlled. He's reached a higher performance plateau here, playing a real human being we care about rather than a goon figure. Credit to the supporting cast, particularly young Cooper, who wins our affection as the irrepressible Max.
Other players are similarly well-cast, including Amanda Donohoe as the predatory law partner and Anne Haney as Fletcher's no-nonsense secretary.
Tierney conveys warm level-headedness as Fletcher's ex-wife, while Jennifer Tilly ditzes it up perfectly as a modern-day gold digger.
Technical contributions are finer and finer, particularly cinematographer Russell Boyd's homey hues and costume designer Judy L. Ruskin's tangy threads.
