Chicago – What is truly astounding about “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” is how overwhelming it is to take in – there is so much going on that sensory overload is a distinct possibility. Shia Labeouf stars in the latest Transformers film, now on Blu-Ray and DVD.
Blu-ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
What is also interesting to ponder is that this whole series is based on a children’s toy, and it has gone so far beyond the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons. It reminded me of the disaster films of the 1970s, where huge casts of familiar and rising stars gathered to participate in whatever destruction was imminent. This time it’s the end of the known world and the enslavement of the population, so it’s time to get busy.
The film opens in 1961, when at that time American intelligence detects a crash landing on the dark side of the moon’s surface.

If you thought we’d seen the last of Transformers: Dark of the Moon when it came out at the end of June this year, you were very much mistaken.
Director Michael Bay, who’s helmed all three of the Transformers films, has now put up on his site dozens and dozens of immensely awesome photos from behind the scenes, taken by the film’s photographer, Robert Zuckerman.
As we wrote at the start of August, the film has joined that elusive club in the movie industry grossing more than $1bn. dollars, becoming one of the three films to do it this year, alongside Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
Bay has said that the film completes his trilogy for the franchise, and will thus be his final Transformers film, which I think is a solid decision on his part. I...

[1] Love it or hate it, Transformers: Dark of the Moon was a colossal hit. Michael Bay's third film featuring the Hasbro toys has grossed about $350 million in America and $750 million internationally for a gross of well over one billion dollars. That number will only continue to grow as the film is now back on IMAX screens. Then, of course, more cash will roll in when the Blu-ray is released later this year allowing fans to delve into the behind the scenes magic that created such a visceral 3D experience. Until then, though, Michael Bay's official site has updated with 174 images taken by talented set photographer Robert Zuckerman that offer a gorgeous view of the production. This should keep fans busy until they can rip through the Blu-ray features. Thanks to Transformers World [2] for the heads up but the images come from Michael Bay's blog [3]. Here are just...

Hollywood has enjoyed a respectable year at the box office. The industry is 8% ahead of last year's record ticket-sales revenue. Variety calls it a "boom," and much ink has been spilled over the theory that in hard financial times, people escape to the movies. But recent data offers only lukewarm support, since actual attendance is up just 3% from 2008, which just so happened to be the industry's worst year for paying customers since 1997. (Last year's record revenue is attributed purely to higher ticket prices.) Throw in higher production and marketing costs and a cratering DVD market-rentals may be up, but sales...

Nicolas Cage sometimes gets a bad rap. Yes, he's an Oscar winner, but his eclectic taste in movies has often drawn criticism, most famously from Sean Penn, who once accused Cage of s-tting on their profession. Say what you want about The Wicker Man or Bangkok Dangerous, but Cage is either the savviest or most fortuitous operator in Hollywood when it comes to his female costars. Yesterday's announcement that Mad Men's January Jones will costar opposite Cage in The Hungry Rabbit Jumps was only the most recent example. Toss in Diane Kruger (National Treasure, pictured), Jessica Biel (Next), Eva Mendes...

This movie should be retitled Transformers: Revenge Of The Running Time. Michael Bay’s sequel clocks in at two and a half hours. Two and a half hours! What is this, The Deer Hunter?! Actually, it’s more like The Postman, because Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen is 150 minutes of self-indulgent gravitas. Not even an AA meeting has this much sobriety.
Gravitas. That’s not a word you want to associate with a summer action flick about fighting robots. Fun—now that’s an adjective that’s appropriate. Unfortunately, that’s not an adjective that’s appropriate for this movie. Overlong. Pretentious. Preposterous. Sempiternal. Bumptious. Imbroglio. Excuse me while I thumb through my thesaurus for more caustic descriptions.
Is this a case of art imitating life? Shia Labeouf really Did hurt his hand while shooting Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen—so they wrote the injury into the film.
But alas,...
