Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Timothée Chalamet’s magical, musical candyman is coming to Max.
“Wonka” will make its streaming debut exclusively on Max on Friday, March 8, Warner Bros. Discovery announced Friday.
The movie — featuring Chalamet in the title role — tells the origin story of Willy Wonka, following him as a young man as he becomes “the world’s greatest inventor, magician and chocolate-maker,” per the studio. The family film co-stars Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key and Hugh Grant as an Oompa-Loompa.
“Wonka” has surpassed $600 million at the global box office, on an estimated $125 million budget. Paul King's 2023 musical "Wonka" served as a prequel to Mel Stuart's 1971 film "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory," more than as an origin story extrapolated from Roald Dahl's 1964 novel "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." "Wonka" employed the same costumes, musical themes, and characters from Stuart's film, but suffused them with color, whimsy, and lightheartedness that was absent from Stuart's film. "Wonka," like the magical confections constructed by the titular chocolatey alchemist, is a fizzy, sweet delight. Despite being born of nostalgia-grabbing cynicism (recall how over-marketed Stuart's film has been to the world's jaded Gen-Xers), director King managed to build an enjoyable, featherweight romp set in a delightful world of powdery sugars and hidden romance. It's no wonder that "Wonka" has earned over half a billion dollars worldwide.

You can watch Timothée Chalamet’s charming chocolatier in Uhd very soon. More on the Wonka 4K Uhd, Blu-ray and DVD release here.
Paul King’s charming, thoroughly lovely Wonka has been doing well for itself. The film, which debuted in cinemas in December, has just crossed the $500m mark at the global box office.
The film follows a young Willy Wonka as he arrives in Europe with a head full of dreams and chocolate recipes. He faces a gang of rival chocolatiers, but nothing can come between Willy and his sweeties, it seems.
The film was critically acclaimed, with many praising Chalamet’s performance and King’s direction. Our own Simon Brew found the film “flat-out brilliant, brimming with magic, confidence, colour and life.” You can read more about his feelings on the film here.

Candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker. After the Thursday preview box office totals arrived, it appears Warner Bros. Pictures‘ wallet is getting thicker! Wonka is off to a sweet start with $3.5M in previews from 3,500 locations. The candy-coated musical starring Timothée Chalamet expands to 4,203 theaters this weekend, with an estimated opening of $30M-$40M.
Wonka is one of three movies from Warners hitting theaters during the holiday season, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Color Purple occupying screens in the lead-up to Santa’s big night. Aquaman 2 could breach the box office with $45M-$50M during its four-day debut, with The Color Purple bowing on Christmas Day with $8 million. Marketing for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has been odd, considering the James Wan sequel is DC’s final film before James Gunn and Peter Safran reboot the Dcu in 2025 with Superman: Legacy.

They were all young once: Don Corleone and Darth Vader, Butch and Sundance, Hannibal and Leatherface, Maleficent and Cruella. And long before he was the world’s best-known chocolatier and distributor of life-changing golden tickets, William “Willy” Wonka was just a twentysomething kid with a top hat, a sweet tooth, and a dream.

Gene Wilder delivered such a perfectly eccentric performance in 1971's beloved classic "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" that it's hard to imagine anyone else in the role. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp tried to make Roald Dahl's world their own back in 2005 with mixed results and a much more zany, quirky take on the character went in a much different direction.
When it comes to "Wonka," director Paul King, best known for the delightful "Paddington" movies, attempts to bring a dose of joy and kindness to the chocolatey world of Willy Wonka with an origin story that finds Hollywood's young heartthrob Timothée Chalamet taking on the role of the young chocolatier as he tries to carve out a name for himself in the candy industry in a European town dominated by a chocolate cartel. Run by three titans of the industry, Slugworth (Paterson Joseph), Prodnose (Matt Lucas), and...

Paul King’s Paddington and Paddington 2 are funny, delightfully inventive, and free of the snarky humor that dominates most kiddie fare. With Wonka, the latest rendition of the adventures of Roald Dahl’s eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka, King offers more of the same. But in returning to the psychedelic, candy-fueled world that Dahl first introduced in 1964’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Wonka also diverges in tone from both the book and the two subsequent films by Mel Stuart and Tim Burton, respectively, and does so to great effect.
Perhaps no one can top Gene Wilder’s uncanny performance as Wonka in Stuart’s 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Timothée Chalamet wisely doesn’t try to match the way that Wilder pivots from charming and merry to menacing and enraged on a dime, instead imbuing Wonka with a spiritedness befitting a prequel set years earlier, bringing a...

You might not be able to tell it from the trailers but Wonka, the latest movie inspired by Roald Dahl’s classic 1964 children’s story “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is, make no mistake about it, a full-on movie musical that I found to be more in the tradition of ’60s-era films like Oliver, Dr. Dolittle, Albert Finney’s Scrooge — basically a throwback to that kind of feel-good musical confection designed to be released during the year’s end.
Unlike 1971’s beloved (but not a hit initially) Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder, or Tim Burton’s darker 2005 take Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Johnny Depp, this version directed Paul King and co-written by King and Simon Farnaby is an origin story of how Willy Wonka came to be Wonka, the magician, inventor and chocolate maker extraordinaire. “Wonka” director Paul King has been open about what drew him to cast Timothée Chalamet as a young version of the whimsical chocolatier: his YouTube videos from when he was in high school.
Any Chalamet fan knows that several videos exist online of the actor singing and dancing pre-fame, including a rap song devoted to the art of statistics and a passionate talent show performance of Nicki Minaj’s “Roman’s Revenge.”
In an interview with Rolling Stone in July, King admitted that watching the videos was all he needed to cast Chalamet. At the premiere of “Wonka” in London on Tuesday night, Chalamet agreed that the clips “sort of” helped him land the role — but that’s not the whole story.
When asked about the videos by Variety, Chalamet said: “I know, damn… they sort of did, in Paul’s words.”
Laughing, he later added, “That wasn’t exclusively what got me the part.

For Timothée Chalamet, starring in “Wonka” as the titular eccentric chocolatier is still the stuff of pure imagination.
At the film’s Tokyo premiere on Monday night, Chalamet donned a purple Prada jumpsuit and joined co-star Hugh Grant — who plays an Oompa-Loompa named Lofty — on stage to say a few words about what the role means to him.
“Paul King wrote a beautiful script here, about a young Willy Wonka who follows his dreams,” Chalamet said. “If you would’ve told me when I was 12 years old, when I was 10 years old watching the Johnny Depp version of Willy Wonka that I’d get to be here in Tokyo promoting this movie as Willy Wonka, standing next to Hugh Grant, I would’ve told you you were lying. So, I guess like the movie, follow your dreams.”

Paul King is no stranger to exploring the fantastical world of a children’s storybook. After two Paddington films, the dark whimsy of Roald Dahl proved to be an exciting new challenge for the director, who has imagined an origin story for the iconic character of Willy Wonka. Dark Sky Films has acquired North American distribution rights to Lola, the science fiction drama from writer-director Andrew Legge and starring Stefanie Martini (Prime Suspect 73, The Last Kingdom) and Emma Appleton (The Witcher, Pistol). The film will be released in early August.
Giles Edwards, head of development and acquisitions at Dark Sky Films, is currently on the ground in Cannes and negotiated the distribution agreement with Yana Georgieva, head of sales for Bankside Films.
Lola is set in 1940 in England, where enterprising sisters Thomasina “Thom” Hanbury (Appleton) and Martha “Mars” Hanbury (Martini) have built a machine, Lola, that can intercept radio and TV broadcasts from the future. The device gives them an exciting preview of the world to come, including music by the likes of David Bowie and the Kinks. But with World War II escalating, the sisters decide to use the machine as a weapon of intelligence, with world-altering consequences.

Things are looking more exciting for Doctor Who than they have in a very long time. Yes, we’ve got David Tennant and Catherine Tate back for the specials, but that’s already old news. What we’re excited about is what happens next. Russell T Davies at the helm of the show he brought back from the dead, not just celebrating anniversaries or reliving past glories, but taking the show in a bold new direction with the 15th, that’s right 15th Doctor Ncuti Gatwa holding the Tardis keys.
Davies is in a position to take the show to places it has never been before. To tell stories in exciting new ways. And as far as we are concerned, there is one way to use that opportunity that simply cannot be passed up.
Yes, it is time for Doctor Who: The Musical Episode.

Directed by Andrew Legge, Lola is an inventive and original British time travel thriller that makes inspired use of archive footage and features a superb soundtrack, including an original song by The Divine Comedy’s Neil Hannon. However, it’s slightly let down by the performances and a lack of attention to the general aesthetic.
The film purports to be a found footage movie, set in the early 1940s. Emma Appleton and Stefanie Martini play Tom and Martha, a pair of eccentric orphan sisters who live in a large mansion house. When their scientific tinkering results in a time machine called Lola, they discover they can receive TV signals from the future, allowing them to accurately predict events in the present.

In Andrew Legge’s feature debut ‘Lola’ you don’t have to time-travel in order to see the future. Two sisters create a machine that can intercept broadcasts from the forthcoming decades: It’s 1941 and they can already listen to Bowie. But World War II soon puts their invention to a much more sinister use.
Following its Locarno bow, black-and-white ‘Lola’ will be shown at the Edinburgh Intl. Film Festival. A Cowtown Pictures production, it was co-produced by ie ie productions. Bankside Films is handling international sales.
Legge played with a similar concept in his short “The Chronoscope,” but there was one significant difference, says the Irish director.
“The machine was similar, but it looked into the past. Which is interesting too, but you are just getting the information. I changed it to the future because I felt it gave me more options.”

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2022 Locarno Film Festival. Dark Sky Films releases the film in theaters and on VOD on Friday, August 4.
An immensely clever and resourceful micro-budget movie about time-travel in the tradition of “La Jetée,” “Primer,” and last year’s loopy Japanese wonder “Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes,” Andrew Legge’s collage-like “Lola” seamlessly combines authentic World War II-era newsreels together with fictional home videos to create a (very modern) found footage sci-fi story that strives to feel like it could have been made by someone in 1941, or at least by Guy Maddin in 2006.
The premise is tantalizing enough to keep your imagination tickled for most of the film’s brisk 79-minute running time: In 2021, a mystery cache of meticulously edited old celluloid was discovered in the cellar of a Sussex country house that once belonged to Martha and Thomasina Hanbury. Filmmakers who look up to Martin Scorsese for his work just got another lesson in how to gracefully respond to a negative review. In a stirring essay for The Times Literary Supplement, the publisher of a mixed “Silence” review that ran back in January, the renowned director defends cinema as commensurate with the great works of literature, music, and art.

Cinephiles may ask themselves if such a fervent response is even needed, especially at a time when one is more likely to read an impassioned defense of television’s artistic merit. Tls, after all, is one of the oldest and most prestigious literary magazines in the world. It stands to reason that their film critic would hold literature in higher esteem than cinema. But Scorsese is not taking it anymore. He writes:

In Behemoth, the Chinese documentary filmmaker Zhao Liang takes on the industrialization of Inner Mongolia lyrically, crafting a nearly wordless visual poem of imploded landscapes and sick, tired workers. His subjects are death and heaven; The Divine Comedy gets name-checked (and even credited as source material), while the English title smacks of Paradise Lost. Of course, it’s impossible to make an apolitical documentary about China. Zhao breaks his into two dark, dirty sections—the first about coal, the second about steel—and concludes with an epilogue, in which the camera emerges ominously from a traffic tunnel into the eerie streets of a ghost city, where rows of sulfur-yellow high-rises stand empty and spotless in the daylight. As for any explanatory titles or statistics, they come only at the end. The filmmaker, who has been a part of the vanguard of Chinese nonfiction film since the early 2000s, has distilled...

Welcome to the machine: Black Mirror is finally blowing American brains in its excellent third season, after years as a word-of-mouth cult hit. Charlie Brooker's English anthology horror series does for computer screens what Dark Shadows did for vampires, tapping into the terror of technology as it zooms past the point where our minds can keep up. Are our smartphones an innovation like electricity or fluoride, something that will quickly get taken for granted as a fact of life? Or are they more like angel dust or Quaaludes, an...

It’s been ten years since The Da Vinci Code saw its theatrical release, and six since its sequel, Angels and Demons. That seems like a long time to wait before releasing a third movie, especially since the first two received lukewarm reviews. For a franchise built on the observation and study of historical clues, you’d think they’d learn their lesson. But when you have names like Ron Howard, Tom Hanks, and Hans Zimmer on your payroll, why not go for broke?

★☆☆☆☆ How do you make the fire and brimstone of The Divine Comedy, the cobbled streets of one of Italy's most beautiful cities and the Renaissance all dull? Simple - get Ron Howard to direct yet another film based on one of Dan Brown's air-headed adventures. This time we contend with Inferno, the third in the film series to date. It's been seven years since we last saw Tom Hanks as the Mickey Mouse watch-wearing Prof Robert Langdon on the big screen and he hasn't been missed. Now he's back, a bit dazed and confused after a mysterious mugging, but still able to waltz into the world's most famous galleries and museums unannounced.
This time Langdon isn't after the scions of Christ or exposing an ancient cabal. Instead, he takes on the somewhat grander task of saving the world by preventing a modern-day Black Death from being unleashed on the...

Warner Bros. has snapped up the feature rights for a new take on Dante’s Inferno. Deadline reports that the publisher has acquired the pitch from scribe Dwain Worrell, best known for 2010 low-budget zombie film, Walking the Dead – not to be confused by Robert Kirkman’s genre juggernaut.
Based on Dante Alighieri’s 14th century epic poem, The Divine Comedy, Warner’s adaptation will depict the first third of the seminal tale in which our titular protagonist descends through the nine circles of Hell in order to rescue his beloved Beatrice. Siding with Virgil, the mythic tale begins on Easter weekend in the year 1300.
There’s little-to-no information regarding the style or approach of WB’s modern take on an old classic, considering that an attempt to save Beatrice from the fiery pits of damnation didn’t factor into the original poem. Rather, this arc didn’t become a tenet...

Godzilla in Hell #1
Written/drawn by James Stokoe
Published by Idw
Since the first appearance of Godzilla in Toho’s 1954 film of the same name, the King of Monsters has battled everything from robotic constructs like Mechagodzilla to a giant moth (Mothra), smog monster (Hedorah), and even a creature (Destoroyah) derived from the oxygen destroyer weapon used to defeat him in the original movie. The giant, nuclear-flame breathing dinosaur has faced very few challenges that he could not stomp his way over or bulldoze his way through, the 1998 film adaptation notwithstanding. But, one must wonder, how would Godzilla fare in Dante’s vision of Hell? Thankfully, in Godzilla in Hell, Idw seeks to answer that question.
The book begins with Godzilla plummeting into the “bottomless pit” of Hell. Godzilla is a gigantic beast capable of flattening skyscrapers, yet he is dwarfed by the size of the vast chasm that he falls down into.

Closely inspired by the events surrounding the murder of British student Meredith Kercher in 2007 and the media circus that ensued, The Face of an Angel embarks on a noble quest to remind us that at the core of this garish spectacle is a victim who lost her life. Unfortunately, given the fascinating subject matter, the aims of Michael Winterbottom's film are one of its few commendable aspects.
The key themes are well introduced early on, particularly amid the discussions between journalists covering the trial of a 'Foxy Knoxy' type murder suspect. Parts of the media are increasingly obsessed with reporting on the details of her hair and clothing choices rather than events pertaining to the murder, thus creating a sad parallel with the real events that transpired. UK, 2014
In 2009, Belle and Sebastian mastermind Stuart Murdoch released a concept album under the guise of God Help the Girl, the name of both the album and the collective of musicians behind it. It was a break away from his Scottish band’s usual stylings in that it was primarily penned for female vocalists known and unknown, though male singers like The Divine Comedy’s Neil Hannon and Murdoch himself made memorable appearances on a few tracks. Additionally, while Belle and Sebastian’s most beloved songs can often be taken as their own singular, compelling tales, the God Help the Girl album was a larger narrative project, with the songs tracking protagonist Eve through various woes and successes. Five years later, a long-gestating film adaptation of the album has arrived, courtesy of producer Barry Mendel (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums) and some support through Kickstarter,...

Toward the end of March Amazon Studios gave Chris Carter's "The After" a series order, but we didn't know when it would debut or how many episodes it would have in its first season. Well, we still don't quite know the former, but we do have some info on the latter...
So far Amazon has slotted "The X-Files" creator's new project for eight episodes, but if Carter has his way, it'll run for at least 99. As he told reporters during Amazon's summer Television Critics Association press tour session, he based the mystery-focused "The After" on Dante's Inferno.
The Divine Comedy, which is comprised of Inferno plus Purgatorio and Paradiso, has 99 cantos in its story (along with an introduction). "I'm using that as my model," Carter revealed.
Other than "early 2015," Amazon hasn't announced the show's exact release date, but per THR, it's not following the "binge" model of all episodes hitting at once.
