Anyone who spends more than a few days at a major festival like the Toronto International Film Festival gets used to hearing the same question: “What’s the best thing you’ve seen?”
For this year’s edition of the Tiff Critics Poll, we asked a variety of writers covering the festival exactly that. The results, culled from 45 ballots, point to a particularly interesting mixture of awards season hopefuls and some of the festival’s standout international offerings.

The quartet at the top? Fan favorite “La La Land” (which was named by seven different critics), followed closely by Barry Jenkins’ tender coming-of-age story “Moonlight” (six), Maren Ade’s “Toni Erdmann” (five) and Denis Villeneuve’s “Arrival” (four). However, there were many other votes cast for under-the-radar titles.

Landing Antonio de la Torre as the co-lead to the already announced Maribel Verdú, we are chalking up Pablo Berger‘s third feature film as a subtitle film item to look out for in 2017. Cineuropa reports that Torre, Quim Gutiérrez, José Mota and José María Pou have joined Abracadabra — with production being set up for early May in Madrid and Navarre.
Gist: This revolves around Carmen (Verdú), a housewife who lives in the Carabanchel neighbourhood of Madrid. One day, she discovers that her husband, Carlos (De la Torre), seems to be possessed by an evil spirit, and so begins a thorough investigation, straddling terror and ludicrousness, to try and get him back.
Worth Noting: Berger’s debut film Torremolinos 73 was distributed in the U.S via First Run Features.
Do We Care?: Blancanieves (read Nicholas Bell’s review) announced Berger as a filmmaker to look out for. Repairing...

Ioncinema.com’s Top 3 Critics’ Picks offers a curated approach to the usual quandary: what would you recommend I see in theaters this month? All appearing on the 2014 film festival circuit, the latest from the Safdie Brothers and French filmmakers Quentin Dupieux and Thomas Cailley are an alluringly fresh trio of options for May ’15.
Reality (Réalité) – Quentin Dupieux
May 1st – Limited Release
Distributor: IFC Midnight
Awards & Fests: This premiered in the Horizons section at the 2014 Venice International Film Festival and got plenty of fest play with notable stops at Sitges ’14, AFI Fest ’14 and Rotterdam ’15.
What the critic’s are saying?: Despite the mixed-bag reactions out of Venice, IFC Midnight acquired the rights last November to this micro-nutty versioner of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. IndieWIRE (A-) cautions future audiences by saying that “some viewers may find grating — is that it’s guaranteed to leave audiences scratching their heads...

The Masters section is always a Croisette and Lido heavy selection and this year is no different. From Cannes we have Jean-Luc Godard’s Goodbye to Language 3D (which is a top of the charts item according to our Blake Williams) Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Leviathan (which our Nicholas Bell thinks is near perfection and calls “cinematic sublimity with this multilayered and operatic exploration of the crushing corruption of an unchecked regime” and Abderrahmane Sissakos’ Timbuktu. On tap directly from Venice we might have the retirement films from Roy Andersson (A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence) and Ann Hui (The Golden Era), with some South Korean representation from Hong Sang-soo in Hill of Freedom and Revivre from Im Kwon-taek, but the worthy mentions are the nabbed world premiere status items from the always fascinating, taste dispenser and wide-ranging filmography in Michael Winterbottom & the always wry and humorous latest...

Our Nicholas Bell consider it among his top 5 best at Tiff this year and both Variety (will thrill to this sweet, spirited return to form) and THR (boards the rollercoaster of early adolescence with infectious results) come to the same consensus in Venice claiming that Together and Lilya 4-ever director Lukas Moodysson is back in great form and the Magnolia Pictures took notice (and so did 24 other territories who picked up the rights from TrustNordisk) – picking up the North American rights to the punk fueled coming-of-ager. Magnolia will release We Are The Best! in 2014.
Gist: VI ÄR BÄST! is about Bobo, Klara and Hedvig. Three 12-13-year-old girls who roam the streets. Who are brave and tough and strong and weak and confused and weird. Who have to take care of themselves way too early. Who heat fish fingers in the toaster when mom is at the pub. Who start...

SXSW is one of my favorite festivals of the year as it showcases some of the best and most innovative real independent films, and with this host of world premiers, it's also playing alot of Sundance material as well as genre fare from all over the world, many of which we've covered heavily in these pages.
From the Sundance lineup, we have films like Moon, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, You Won't Miss Me, Grace, and Humpday, among others.
For the world genre material we've covered, there's Lake Mungo, The Square, Zift, and Awaydays.
I think you get the point that lots of great looking film will be playing. I'll leave a bit of the exploration to you..
Lineup after the break.
Narrative Features Competition

Director: Kyle Bogart. Writer: Cliff and Kyle Bogart
