A bunch of sequels and a remake are vying for the Best Visual Effects Oscar this year, many of them from Disney, including Bill Condon’s live-action remake of Disney’s classic “Beauty and the Beast,” Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” and Lucasfilm’s upcoming “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
Three Fox films offer stunning VFX: “War for the Planet of the Apes,” which advances its visual effects technology over the last Matt Reeves installment featuring Weta Digital’s astonishing array of digital apes led by performance capture master Andy Serkis as Caesar, could win Weta’s Joe Letteri (“Avatar,” “King Kong,” “The Lord of the Rings”) his fifth Oscar. Another visually sumptuous sequel is Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049.” And Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” is also impressive.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 flopped. Spider-Man: Homecoming hit. But which has grossed the most money?
By now, we’ve all been well schooled in how the Spider-Man movie franchise has played out. Sam Raimi’s first two films were excellent, and raging hits. Spider-Man 3 was, by Raimi’s admission as well as many others, a cluttered mess, and not so successful. Then, in came Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man reboots. They were brought to a close when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did underwhelming business at the box office, leading Sony to abandon its then-planned Spider-Man movie universe.
Now, though, it’s happier times. Sony has been collaborating with Marvel on Spider-Man films, and the first full fruit of that – Spider-Man: Homecoming – has been one of the successes of the summer. Rightly so, too.
All well and good, right?
Well, sort of. Because what all this...

Several years ago Kevin Smith set out to make a Krampus movie, but when Michael Dougherty beat him to it, Smith wound up shelving the project. However, after a little re-engineering, the project was brought back to life as a horror anthology entitled Killroy Was Here, which, believe it or not, is already shooting in Florida. Like many of his recent movies, Killroy Was Here originates... Read More...

Box office is laboring this weekend; that’s par for the Labor Day holiday course. This year, the weakness stems almost entirely from the failure of new studio releases, with “The Light Between Oceans” (Disney) and “Morgan” (20thCentury Fox) flailing.
Holdovers, however, are doing better. Also helping the cause are two limited-release films, CBS Films’ “Hell or High Water” and Pantelion’s “No Manches Frida,” both handled by Lionsgate for their partners.

Famously Marvel Studios doesn't own all its properties as Sony and Fox still have the rights to the "Spider-Man" and "X-Men"/"Fantastic Four" franchises respectively.
Then the unexpected happened - Marvel and Sony came to a deal over Spider-Man which would see Marvel Studios have creative control of the projects which would still remain Sony films. The deal allowed Spider-Man to appear as a character in "Captain America: Civil War" and will allow McU characters to show up in next year's "Spider-Man: Homecoming" film.
The character's appearance in 'Civil War' was a big success, a stark contrast to last year's "Fantastic Four" reboot which failed badly and the recent "X-Men: Apocalypse" which made money but was a critical bomb. Having seen the impact on Sony, could Fox now be considering a similar arrangement?

Deadpool was an unexpected hit, but Fantastic Four was a huge flop and X-Men: Apocalypse proved to be a critical and commercial disappointment. It makes sense then that 20th Century Fox is at least considering teaming up with Marvel Studios, especially after they essentially saved Spider-Man for Sony Pictures by giving the wall-crawler a critically acclaimed role in Captain America: Civil War. Talking on the latest episode of Collider Heroes, Matt Key, a producer on Kevin Smith's Fatman on Batman podcast, had this to say about some interesting rumblings he's been hearing. "I've heard from a few of my sources, my little birds that Fox and Marvel have... kind of talked, but not really, but like there's interest from Fox, like, 'Ooh, y'know, what they did with Sony and Spider-Man is actually pretty cool, like, maybe...' We're years away from that ever possibly happening... but I think that's what it would take.

According to a pair of popular movie sites, Warner Bros. is doing some last-minute reshoots on Suicide Squad to make the film funnier. Did the bad reviews for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice worry Warner Bros. enough that they decided to make changes to the film?
The sites ‘Geeksofdoom’ and ‘Birth.Movies.Death’ have both reported that Warner Bros is doing reshoots on the Suicide Squad film. Apparently, they are adding more light, humorous moments to the movie, hoping to avoid another critical mugging, as happened with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Of the trailers released for Suicide Squad, the one that got the best reaction from fans was the second one, which used lively music from the band Queen. It highlighted the more humorous moments of the film and got a great reception from everyone. However, according to some people inside DC, the trailer shows “every joke in the movie”. Therefore,...

Warner Bros. Picture
If there’s one rule of DC comic book movies that Batman V Superman proves, it’s that Warner Bros. will always get their way eventually. After all, they’ve been trying to get these two heroes to duke it out on screen for over a decade (a script was written in 2003 and a foreshadowing easter egg inserted into I Am Legend in 2006), despite the concept not being a big part of the characters in print. In addition to the disappointing titular bout though, Dawn Of Justice also sees the studio finally live out another one of their biggest fantasies of the past quarter-century.
Back in the late nineties, Warner were very keen to get a reboot of Superman off the ground, bringing in Tim Burton as director and Jon Peters to produce. As reported by several writers who worked on the project – including super Super-fan Kevin Smith...

Warner Bros. and Ben Affleck are in the process of developing a new solo Batman film, and there’s a chance it could turn out to be a trilogy. Fans all have their opinions on what they would like to see come out of these films, but one fan has a lot more clout than everyone else. That fan is Kevin Smith, and he recently appeared on Screen Junkies' Movie Fights, and discussed what he would like to see in this solo Batman film. He said:
"I'm going to give you two versions. I was going to say Hush, because you get all the characters. In a world where DC is trying to launch the DC cinematic universe, this would be a way to do it and introduce all of Batman's rogues' gallery in one movie. It’s pretty clear at this point that Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four movie was something of a failed attempt at doing something a little different with Marvel’s First Family. Whether that was a misapplied vision or a result of studio interference is a debate which, we suspect, will persist for some time yet. But the film exists, and that means there are plenty of questions about it which, we suspect, audiences will want answered. And that’s why we’ve tried to answer them.
Spoilers ahead, once you scroll past Daphne The Spoiler Squirrel.

Superman Lives is the ultimate superhero movie “What If?” A Tim Burton-directed, Nicolas Cage-starring reboot of the franchise adapting The Death Of Superman, it’s a bizarre film that languished in development hell mere years before the modern comic book resurgence began.
The thing is, what most people know about the film begins and ends with that single photo of Cage mid-blink at a costume-fitting. The cause of endless derision across the internet, it’s actually a pretty inaccurate representation of what Burton and co. were cooking up.
Jon Schnepp attempts to shed some light on the famed troubled production with his lovingly and exhaustively researched documentary, The Death Of Superman Lives: What Happened? What he reveals is that, far from being an obvious disaster waiting to happen, Lives was an incredibly exciting project, with a unique, well-defined vision. Whether it would have been any...

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation is the latest film to be 'tracking softly'. But why are we so keen to lambast films we've not seen?
And so here we go again. We're two weeks away from the release of a blockbuster movie, and the dreaded term 'tracking softly' has reared its head. This time, it's apparently the upcoming Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation that's reportedly set for a lower than expected opening weekend when it arrives in cinemas at the end of July. Not withstanding the fact that very few people have seen the film yet (and early reactions from those that have are very positive), and that box office success is rarely determined by American takings only, it's still an indicative state of where we are with big movies right now.
Let's do the factual basics first though.

You can read what he said then in a piece I wrote early last year on the Kickstarter campaign for The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened? Now it’s time to see what Smith says now, in the first trailer for the documentary, which is about the failed project. Also in this trailer are a lot of other prominent people who worked on Superman Lives, including director Tim Burton (who is nearly driven to suicide talking about the sad fate of the film on camera), Lorenzo di Bonaventura (then the Warner Bros. exec who greenlit the...

There are a lot of "what ifs" in the movie business. There are so many options when it comes to casting actors to play characters in movies. Superhero films are huge right now, and I love most of the actors that studios have cast to play these badass characters. Christian Bale as Batman, Andrew Garfield aa Spider-Man, Henry Cavill as Superman, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man are just a few of many. But these characters could have easily been played by other actors. It's hard to imagine that now since we're already invested in what's in front of our eyes.
I've come up with a list of actors who almost played some of these superheroes. You may already know about some of the close calls on the list, you may not, but when I was researching for this article there were a few things I didn't know before,...

Ben Affleck's Batsuit isn't going to be as unintentionally hilarious as the one George Clooney wore in 1997's Batman and Robin. According to moviemaker Kevin Smith, who saw the costume prototype while visiting Batman vs. Superman director Zack Snyder, the newest version is a masterpiece. "I saw the Batman costume. More than that, I saw a picture of [Affleck] in the costume," he said during his latest Babble On podcast. "I don't want to give anything away 'cause that is up to them and stuff, but I am going to say this: I instantly bear hugged [Snyder]." "You have not seen this costume on film before. For a comic book fan, it was mind-bending, because every other movie does this...

Sure, the beach, barbecues and vacations are nice for the general population, but we pop culture junkies know that the best part of summer is San Diego Comic-Con. All the fun kicks off on July 18, and we're getting ready to head back to the West Coast to keep you in the loop on what you can expect from some of the hottest upcoming movies.
Team NextMovie will be in full effect at Comic-Con 2013, with editors Kevin Polowy and Kase Wickman on the ground to cover panels, snap photos, pop into the MTV live stream and hang out on San Diego roofdecks at night for no particular reason. Kevin is most excited to see Harrison Ford outdo his 2010 handcuffs bit by entering the "Ender's Game" panel fully engulfed in flames (you heard it here and on multiple other blogs first), while Kase is super-psyched to see the cast of "Divergent" jump off of things.

With a script by Kevin Smith and visionary director Tim Burton behind the camera, the film was set to show the world a decidedly different take on the iconic character. The lost Superman film would have been released a decade before Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns" and almost a decade after Burton's game-changing first "Batman" film.
Cage spoke with MTV News about the lost Superman epic and about the Kickstarter campaign to further examine "Superman Lives."
"The fact that Tim and I were pretty far down the road designing ["Superman Lives"], and I know that with Tim and where I was going to go, we would have done something really special," recalls Cage. "At least it's...

It's curious that a director as idiosyncratic and...well, just plain weird as Tim Burton has become one of Hollywood's A-listers. But from 1989's "Batman" to 2010's billion-dollar-grossing "Alice in Wonderland," the helmer has managed to turn his dark, gothic imagination into something that genuinely captures the hearts and minds of the general public. Indeed, even films like "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and the upcoming "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," which are produced by Burton, show that he, like Alfred Hitchcock before him, has become one of the few directors who's a true brand name, with audiences knowing what they can expect when they purchase a ticket.
But despite his success, Burton, like every filmmaker, isn't necessarily able to get everything he wants made. The path of his career has been littered with a number of projects that either didn't get made at all, or got made with radically different interpretations and visions to them.

Cannes, which has announced its 2012 line-up, has some serious competition. As Tribeca begins and ahead of Sundance London, our critics examine the big hitters on the film festival circuit
It has been a quiet few months on the film festival front. The last two biggies, Sundance and Berlin, were back in the depths of winter; but now things are suddenly getting interesting. Tribeca, the New York trendoid-magnet, has just started, and Cannes, the swanky Cote d'Azur schmoozathon, has reared its finely contoured head on the horizon. The UK is even getting in on the action, with the much-anticipated arrival next week of Sundance London, an offshoot of Robert Redford's indie-maven event in Park City, Utah.
Sundance London is an example of that industry buzzword "diffusion", whereby name events set up franchises overseas. Tribeca has been doing it since 2009 in Qatar, co-organising the Doha film festival. It's a byproduct of...

Generally speaking, stories about Hollywood personalities tend to focus on players with larger than life egos, who used their bravado to make things happen, or the stars whose luminous quailty made them legends. There is nothing that makes for a more page-turning read or a compelling documentary than juicy behind the scenes stories, and the outsized rumors that linger around them. But you won't find anything salacious in "No Subtitles Necessary: Laszlo & Vilmos," which makes it all the more refreshing and endearing. This is the kind of Hollywood story we don't hear often enough, one of true friendship and collaboration, of two likeminded souls whose dedication to each other and respect for the craft made them true legends in the field.
If you don't know much about the personal lives of celebrated and revered cinematographers Laszlo Kovacs and Vilmos Zsigmond, your appreciation of 'No Subtitles Necessary' will be even greater.

This weekend, "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" is motorcycling to multiplexes across the country. Along with flaming asphalt, it will no doubt leave great controversy in the geekazoid community. Is it a fun B-picture offering a heavy dose of Crazy Nic Cage and frenzied Neveldine/Taylor camerawork? Or is a mess on wheels that makes the first "Ghost Rider" look like "Iron Man"?
I leave it to you to hammer this argument out, but there's one thing that's absolutely for certain: Nicolas Cage's fanboy cred.
The two-time Johnny Blaze doesn't just own an Academy Award statuette; he's got the heart of an unrepentant comic-book nerd, and he doesn't care who knows it. In case you weren't aware, let us detail the ways in which Nic Cage is Hollywood's A-list dork.

Matt Damon Passes On Directing His Directorial Debut
This is a bit of a bummer. Vulture is reporting that Matt Damon is no longer planning on directing the film that was going to be his directorial debut, though he is still planning on starring in it. According to sources close to the project, Damon is pulling back because of "script issues," which is a bit weird because he and John Krasinski co-wrote the script off an idea Krasinski and David Eggers came up with. With the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises, the third in a trilogy of highly successful Batman movies by Christopher Nolan, and the recent release of the hotly anticipated video game Arkham City, its really never been a better time to be a Batman fan. The past few years have seen a gigantic leap in popularity for DC Comic’s surly, brooding poster boy, a character that has always held a large amount of public affection in its near 80 year history.
With this in mind, WhatCulture has decided to do an article comparing the two most beloved Batman movies: Tim Burton’s Batman from 1989, the iconic and most endearing interpretation of Batman, and The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan’s second take on the World’s Greatest Detective from 2008, the highest grossing and critically revered Batman film to date. As soon as I heard of this, I practically pleaded for the opportunity to write it.

A report published this week suggests films showing smoking should automatically be classified 18
The big story
This week a report published by the medical journal Thorax recommended that all films including a scene in which a character smokes should automatically be classified as 18, regardless of any other content.
The report, produced by the UK Centre for Tobacco Contol Studies, was compiled from a survey of 5,000 teenagers who were asked if they had seen 50 films randomly selected from 366 box-office hits between 2001 and 2005. When the viewing preferences of the adolescents were compared to their smoking habits it was found that those exposed to puff-heavy plotlines were 73% more likely to have tried a cigarette and nearly 50% more likely to take up smoking in the longer term.
"More than half the films shown in the UK that contain smoking are rated 15 or below, so children and young teenagers are clearly exposed," said Dr Andrea...

Seeing comics converted into screenplays is standard these days. But what happens to all the scripts that don't get made?
Well, if you're Kevin Smith, you turn your unfulfilled studio offerings into printed fanboy gold.
The writer/actor/filmmaker doesn't always follow the status quo and as with his planned Green Hornet film, which he was set to write and direct before dropping out in 2004, he's taken another unmade project to the comic book world instead.
This time it's his attempted big-screen rendition of The Six Million Dollar Man, the 70s television series that starred Lee Majors as Steve Austin, a former astronaut enhanced with technology after a near-fatal accident. Smith has rebuilt his screenplay as a comic called The Bionic Man.
As previewed by Bleeding Cool, the new comic will be co-written by Phil Hester (an artist on Smith's Green Arrow series) with Jonathan Lau on art duties. Published by Dynamite,...

At Comic-Con, even the likes of Andrew Garfiied and Steven Spielberg turn up to kneel at the altar of fandom. Ben Child travels to San Diego to feel the force of the nerds in their element
At Comic-Con International, the geek is king. Once a niche showcase for the latest in science fiction comics, film and TV, the San Diego festival has become the fan's alternative to Cannes; a place where ordinary punters, behind-the-scenes creatives and stars can get together to discuss the cutting edge of popular culture, from fantasy to anime. Last weekend, 130,000 people passed through its doors to see sneak previews of wildly anticipated movies, from The Hobbit to Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin; they also came to quiz the likes of Andy Serkis and Andrew Garfield at the convention's famed panel discussions, as well as hang out with fellow fanboys and girls – many of them in costume.

When Francis Ford Coppola revealed a few months ago that he wanted to present his upcoming horror film Twixt in a way “that’s never been done before,” it turned some heads. While he isn’t normally one to do anything radical, he’s experimented in the past — just look at his 3D short, Captain Eo — but never really to a point that would be seen as groundbreaking. After learning that the plans would be unveiled at Comic-Con, it became my most anticipated panel of the entire event. They’ve now been shown off, and it seems even more interesting than anything I had predicted.
The basic plan calls for both the filmmaker and composer, Dan Deacon, to go on a 30-city tour with it, where they’ll re-edit the movie and soundtrack as audiences are watching it play before them. This was demonstrated when Coppola took out his iPad...

'Captain America: The First Avenger' Reactions And An 'Avengers' Set Visit In Today's Twitter Report
People cool enough to get in to "Captain America: The First Avenger" on its premiere night sounded off on Twitter Tuesday. Kevin Smith and Edgar Wright spoke highly of the film, and Smith also had some praise for the "Avengers" trailer.
Mark Millar, meanwhile, had to turn down a visit to the "Avengers" set, and shared his sorrow with his followers. His reasons, an evaluation of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man and pre-Comic-Con travel tweets await after the jump.
