Pack up yer bags and steady your stomachs, gorehounds — we're heading back to Hostel! After a jaunt into family-friendly horror fare with 2018's The House With A Clock In Its Walls, director Eli Roth returned to his bloody roots last year with splatter-filled slasher Thanksgiving. And now, with his hotly anticipated videogame adaptation Borderlands' summer release fast approaching, Roth is already hard at work on his next project — a small-screen take on the cult torture-porn franchise that secured his horror icon status. And did we mention the series will star The Holdovers' Paul Giamatti?
As first reported by THR, Paul Giamatti has closed a deal to star in Roth's TV take on the Hostel franchise, a modern adaptation of the films described as both an "elevated thriller" and also a "reinvention". Promisingly, the show — which will reunite co-writer and director Roth with Hostel collaborators Chris Briggs and Mike Fleiss — is coming from Fifth Season,...

When Paul Giamatti said he wanted to "do more horror," we're not sure anyone would have predicted this!
While doing the press rounds to promote his acclaimed comedy drama, The Holdovers, last year, the recent Academy Award-nominee expressed a desire to star in a horror project.
“Horror. I’d like to do more horror. I love horror,” he said when asked what type of movie he'd like to work on next. "I like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre a lot. I love horror. Love it!” When the interviewer was a taken aback that the well-respected actor is such a Chainsaw fan, Giamatti said: “Great movie! It’s a great movie. No, no, no, no, no, it’s a great movie, it’s a beautiful movie.”
"I don’t think I could do the killer," he went on. "But I don’t know what I would be. I would love to do something…...

"And when Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept," as the saying goes, "for there were no more horror movies to bring back as a modern revival." Hmm, that's not exactly right, but you're picking up what I'm laying down here. Horror continues to be an industry mainstay and, when it works, it's been a pillar of consistent box office profits and viewership ratings. So, in that light, it's no surprise that Hollywood would dig into its bag of tricks and come up with yet another relatively popular IP to revive all over again for old fans and newcomers alike. In this case, the revival series in question also comes with quite an interesting little factoid that could've led to famous character actor Paul Giamatti joining the "Hostel" franchise almost 20 years ago.

More than a decade after the last bit of blood was spilled on the Hostel movie franchise, the story is now moving to television. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Eli Roth, Chris Biggs, and Mike Fleiss are all returning to the land of masked torturers for another round — this time on the small screen and with Paul Giamatti in tow. Here’s a look at everything we know so far about the Hostel show. What will the Hostel TV show be about? According to THR, the project is being billed as a “modern adaptation” of the story as well as an “elevated thriller” and “reinvention” of the franchise. For the uninitiated, Hostel‘s three films centered on a group of tourists who are kidnapped, sold, and tortured by wealthy Europeans who paid handsome sums to viciously attack them in dark cave chambers. The first film hit theaters in 2005 and was...

Paul Giamatti has signed on to star in a television adaptation of Eli Roth’s horror franchise “Hostel.”
The project is in development at Fifth Season, the studio behind “Severance,” and does not yet have a distributor attached. Roth is set to direct and write with original franchise producer Chris Briggs. The two of them will also executive produce alongside “Hostel” alum Mike Fleiss.
“Hostel,” which premiered in theaters in 2005 and spawned two sequels, followed American tourists who are convinced by a stranger to travel from Barcelona to Slovakia, where they are then taken captive by an underground organization that kidnaps people for rich clients to torture and kill.
The series is envisioned as a “modern adaptation” and “reinvention” of the low-budget horror franchise, the first installment of which collected $82 million atop a $4.8 million budget. The less lucrative sequel, 2007’s “Hostel: Part II,” still raked in more than $35 million against a $10.2 million budget.

Update: A month after the Paul Giamatti / Hostel TV series rumor popped up, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that it’s actually happening! Giamatti is set to play “a key role” in the Hostel TV show, which is said to reinvent the franchise as an “elevated thriller.” The series is coming our way from Fifth Season, the studio behind Apple’s Severance, and has Eli Roth, Chris Briggs, and Mike Fleiss on board as executive producers. Roth and Briggs are also writing the project, which Roth will be directing.
In 2013, Giamatti revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he almost made a cameo in the original Hostel: “Eli was shooting Hostel in Prague and I was shooting The Illusionist and I met him. We talked about me actually killing somebody in that movie but it never panned out.” Now it looks like Giamatti and Roth are going to make up for lost time.

In one of our recent Wtf episodes, we covered the eye-gouging, eastern European-set filthy shenanigans of Eli Roth’s nicely messed up torture porn movie, Hostel. The film helped pave the way for the exploitation horror subgenre to thrive in the early 2000s, and followed a group of American tourists who get a lot more than they bargained for during a trip to the lovely picturesque country of Slovakia. Poor lads. All they wanted was some promiscuous sex with hot European ladies, but they weren’t counting on a shady organization dishing out decapitation and slit throats, as a side dish to the fornication. The movie, according to the tagline, was ‘based upon true events’ and whether or not you believe this claim, it’s nothing if not brutally demented in parts. So, like any other horror movie that manages to whip up a frenzy with critics and fans alike,...

The Bachelor producers were faced with a tough question about the franchise’s history of issues surrounding race during an ABC panel at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour.
“Why does it seem like The Bachelor has such a hard time dealing with racial issues? And have you learned anything from these past scandals that have led to the departure of Chris Harrison?” Eric Deggans, a TV critics and media analyst from NPR, asked executive producers Bennett Graebner, Jason Erlich and Claire Freeland.
Freeland, who joined the franchise from The Bachelor Canada last year, took on the task of answering.
“I mean, I can speak to where we are now. Our goal is to represent the fabric of the country, not just with respect to diversity and ethnicity, but also ability, body types… I think so far we are putting our money where our mouth is,” Freeland said.

After years of controversies as ratings steadily declined, is 2023 the year The Bachelor franchise found redemption?
The prospect feels greater than ever following the outsized success of The Golden Bachelor, ABC’s ingenious senior-focused spin-off that, in its first season, saw 72-year-old Gerry Turner seize a second chance at love.
Audiences have clearly responded to this breath of fresh air, with over 9M tuning in for The Golden Bachelor finale after seven days of multi-platform viewing, in the franchise’s best audience in almost four years. This comes following an entire season of success for the show, which has repeatedly set audience records since it debuted, with the premiere episode recently becoming ABC‘s most-watched episode of an unscripted series ever on Hulu.
The network has already announced plans to further cash in on the success of Golden by televising Turner’s wedding, a move ABC hasn’t opted for in years.

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
In 1974, director Tobe Hooper brought us The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. An independent production, shot in the heat of a Texas summer, that introduced us to a chainsaw-wielding cannibal called Leatherface. And his twisted family. It was a box office hit. And quickly became one of the most popular and respected horror films of all time. So, of course, there was eventually a remake. Produced by one of the biggest, flashiest filmmakers in the industry. Directed by a music video director in his feature debut. Starring an actress from a family friendly TV show. It sounds like a recipe for disaster. But when the remake was released in 2003, it was another success story.

It’s 6:34 a.m., and the sun is rising as Gerry Turner hands out his final rose of the night. His bedtime came and went long ago. Giddy producers are watching him from a control room, 11 hours into an overnight shoot that’s not done yet.
Turner isn’t exactly a night owl. Typically at this time, the 72-year-old would just be waking up to fry some bacon and eggs. His day might then include a jog around the lake, or perhaps a game of pickleball.
But on a summer night at a mansion in the hills above Malibu, Calif., Turner has been speed-dating 22 women who’d arrived in limousines to meet him. His teenage granddaughters had helped him choose the perfect tuxedo, so he would look his best. After all, their grandpa was about to make his debut on “The Golden Bachelor,” the first-ever senior citizen dating show,...

“The Bachelorette” launched its 20th season Monday night, marking the first season to air without franchise creator Mike Fleiss on board — except Fleiss’ name still appeared when the credits rolled.
During the ending credits at the conclusion of the episode, the very last name to appear on-screen was Fleiss’ accompanied by the words “created by.”
Unlike past seasons, Fleiss was not credited as an “executive producer” and his production company, Next Entertainment, was not listed. In former seasons, Fleiss’ name appeared first on the credits, instead of last.
A source tells Variety that the “created by” credit is contractual because Fleiss is still the creator of “The Bachelor” franchise, regardless of his departure.
Warner Bros. TV declined to comment.

ABC announced Tuesday that both series will be returning to the network for another installment. This marks Season 28 for The Bachelor and Season 9 for Bachelor in Paradise.
This will be a new era for both series, as they will be the first seasons produced without creator Mike Fleiss, who stepped away from the franchise in March following allegations of misconduct. The Bachelor has been on the air for years, garnering a massive fan base. However, not everyone is a fan of the ABC reality series, including talk show host Kelly Ripa. Chris Harrison didn’t hold back about how he views The Bachelor creator and former executive producer Mike Fleiss in the latest episode of his podcast.
The April 9 episode of The Most Dramatic Podcast Ever featured a conversation with former The Real Housewives of Orange County star Meghan King. Toward the end of the episode, she asked Harrison if he believed there to be any narcissists within the Bachelor franchise.
“The creator of the show was — severely,” he replied. “One of the toughest things about narcissism is you will never, I don’t want to say never, but very rarely, will that person ever recognize that about themselves.”
He continued, “I was talking to one therapist about narcissism and she said, ‘I’m just warning you that next to a homicidal maniac, narcissism is the toughest thing to treat.’ That to have someone self-realize and actually fix that is next to impossible.

Earlier this week, Bachelor Nation was rocked to the core when it was revealed that Mike Fleiss, the creator, was bowing out after 21 years.
At the time, Fleiss released a statement in which he thanked Warner Bros. Television and ABC.
"They've found the perfect creative team for me to entrust The Bachelor franchise and keep this lightening in a bottle bold and moving forward," he said.
"Let the journey continue."
Days later, new details have emerged about what reportedly went on behind the scenes of the popular franchise.
Variety reports that Fleiss' sudden exit came after an investigation into allegations of racial discrimination.
According to the report, the investigation included accounts of producers on the show about Fleiss pushing back on bringing diversity to the franchise.
Unnamed staffers also opened up about "bullying" tactics he would use.

Mike Fleiss, the creator/executive producer of The Bachelor, announced he was departing the ABC reality franchise after over 20 years earlier this week, but it appears there is more to the story. According to Deadline, Fleiss’ exit from the series came after a workplace misconduct investigation, which looked into claims of alleged racist behavior as well as verbal and emotional abuse against the long-time producer. It is said that Fleiss was not formally fired, but after a conversation with Warner Bros. TV about the investigation results, he chose to leave. Variety adds that the investigation was conducted by an outside party over the past few months, and those spoken to included other current and past staffers, many of whom were prominent producers within the franchise. The complaints against Fleiss included “bullying” behavior, as well as a refusal to increase diversity on the show. A source familiar with the investigation who spoke to Variety stated,...

Two days after news broke that The Bachelor creator Mike Fleiss was exiting the franchise that premiered more than two decades ago, he has responded to a report that his departure followed an investigation into racial discrimination, with Fleiss acknowledging that he could have done more to engender diversity.
Variety published a report Thursday stating that Warner Bros. Television, which is behind ABC’s long-running dating franchise, conducted the investigation after several employees lodged complaints against Fleiss that included alleged bullying. Per the report, among those involved in the investigation conducted by a third party were current producers as well as former production staffers, which led to Fleiss’ exit.
In a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter, Fleiss did not directly address the investigation but said that he should have stepped up efforts to make the franchise more diverse. He stated that he was proud of having worked to make...

The drama unfolding in the Mike Fleiss universe has enveloped Disney, which was in discussions with the creator of The Bachelor over a producing deal before the investigation over workplace misconduct allegations surfaced.
Deadline understands that Walt Disney Television Alternative was in talks with Fleiss over a deal, described by sources as a first-look or development arrangement.
However, sometime after Warner Bros. TV began the investigation, Deadline understands, the talks ended and Fleiss opted to leave Warner Bros. TV and the franchise. This has been taking place over the last few months.
Fleiss, whose deal with Warner Bros. TV ended in 2022, was expected to launch a new company to house his new projects.
Fleiss, who is repped by CAA, had been in talks with an exec that he had previously worked with in The Bachelor capacity to run his production company. That exec had separately been in negotiations with Disney over his own deal.

When Mike Fleiss announced he was leaving “The Bachelor” franchise earlier this week, he released a chipper statement to the media, congratulating the latest winning couple from the reality dating show that he created more than 20 years ago.
“First and foremost, congratulations are in order for Zach and Kaity.
