“I feel like real life is always such a letdown,” Jules Vaughn (Hunter Schafer) announces midway through this second Euphoria special, titled “Fuck Anyone Who’s Not a Sea Blob.” She’s referring to how much more satisfying she finds online relationships than in-person ones, particularly in the aftermath of being catfished by sociopath supervillain Nate (Jacob Elordi). Kingdom alumna Kiele Sanchez has been cast as a female lead in CBS’ drama The Lincoln Lawyer, from The Practice creator David E. Kelley based on Michael Connelly’s series of bestselling novels. Wisdom of the Crowd creator Ted Humphrey has come on board as executive producer and showrunner, and Adam Bernstein (Divorce) has been tapped to direct and executive produce the project, which has a series order. It hails from A+E Studios, which will co-produce with CBS TV Studios. Sanchez is the first actor cast as the search continues for the lead role of Mickey Haller, played in the 2011 feature adaptation by Matthew McConaughey.
Written by Kelley and directed by Bernstein, The Lincoln Lawyer centers on Mickey Haller, an iconoclastic idealist, who runs his law practice out of the back of his Lincoln Town Car, as he takes on cases big and small across the expansive city of Los Angeles.

Today, Criterion released “The Tree of Life” on DVD and Blu-Ray, a package that will include a new version of the film 49 minutes longer than the theatrical version. Director Terrence Malick opened up the edit not because he was prevented from releasing a better version of the film (New Line Cinema released his director’s cut in 2011), but because he wanted to continue that film’s creative process.
“What’s interesting talking to Terry about this [new version of ‘Tree of Life’], I think he still doesn’t want people to think this is a better version. This is another version,” Criterion technical director Lee Kline told us earlier this month. “He said, ‘No one asked Bob Dylan to play a song the same way every night. Why should I have to make one film?’”
So what’s in the new version? Here’s a summary based on having watched the two versions side-by-side.

After the marketing blitz of the After Dark Horrorfest films, some of which were fun and others were abysmal, the production company decided to branch out into the original content arena. These releases, done on independent-film budgets and often leaving any real lasting impact, are straight-to-dvd horror films that are more suited to screening on a lazy weekend afternoon on the Chiller channel than anything that would become someone's new favorite film. Still, I've been a fan of Johnathon Schaech since The Doom Generation, so when I saw Dark Circles sitting on the new release shelf at my local video store, I picked it up.
Following in the footsteps of other recent horror releases like Baby Blues, Dark Circles fixates on the stress and pressure put upon new parents in the aftermath of an addition to the family.

I have always thought that having a child was the most terrifying thing a person can experience. Think about it: you’re bringing a new life into the world, you’re forced to completely change the way you live and behave, and it’s up to you to keep that baby alive. What could be scarier than having another life rely on you to survive? Well, the new After Dark Original movie Dark Circles shows the struggles of being a new parent intensified by unexplained activity, making the whole “having a baby” thing seem like the least of a parent’s worries.
Dark Circles is directed by Paul Soter of Broken Lizard fame, and it follows new parents Penny (Pell James) and Alex (Jonathon Schaech) as they adjust to their new situation, as well as their new home in the countryside. While Penny worries that her lack of experience and...

Broken Lizard alum Paul Soter is taking a break from outlandish, wacky comedies like Super Troopers and Beerfest and going in a different direction: horror, pure and simple. In his new film, Dark Circles, not a laugh is to be had in this dark psychological horror flick about new parents who fall apart when sleep deprivation gets the better of them. We spoke with Paul about his love of horror movies, how this film was inspired by his real-life experience as a new dad, and how horror differs from Broken Lizard films.
Where did the idea for Dark Circles come from?
It’s somewhat biographical. When I had my first kid a couple years ago, we kind of did the same thing. We moved into a house without doing our due diligence. We had our baby and found out there were tear-downs going on all over our neighborhood. Having a baby cry all night,...

There are two very broad, distinct, and (fine) obvious types of horror stories being told in the new indie thriller from After Dark Films (Originals). In one corner we have the "happy family in a creepy house they just bought to get away from the city" stuff and in the other is the "evil female specter who may or may not be real but definitely seems to covet the couple's infant" material. Adding to the patchwork feel of the premise are some touches, characters, and ideas that are inspired by a wide array of recent (mostly indie or foreign) supernatural thrillers...
In other words, Dark Circles will be thoroughly familiar (perhaps even predictable) to anyone who watches a lot of horror movies, but that's not to say you won't find some creepy moments and worthwhile assets scattered across the flick. For example, writer/director Paul Soter seems to actually care about his central characters.

This week Lionsgate and After Dark are releasing their indie thriller Dark Circles, which was written and directed by “Broken Lizard” alum Paul Soter.
Starring Johnathon Schaech and Pell James, Dark Circles follows brand-new parents Alex and Penny, who are suffering endless insomnia due to their new bundle of joy who isn’t able to sleep more than 15 minutes continuously. As their minds begin to crumble, both Alex and Penny begin to see disturbing hallucinations that only add to their growing paranoia and fear, ultimately forcing them to question what’s real and what isn’t around them.
Dread Central recently had the chance to hop on the phone with co-star Schaech, who is currently off filming Hercules 3D in Bulgaria for Renny Harlin and Millennium Films (more on that later on in the interview!) to discuss his role in Dark Circles, how he used a real-life childhood trauma for his performance in the film,...

This week writer/director Paul Soter’s intensely creepy thriller Dark Circles (review) arrives on DVD, VOD and more courtesy of Lionsgate and After Dark Originals.
Starring Johnathon Schaech and Pell James, Dark Circles follows new parents Alex and Penny, who move to the country with their infant in hopes of a normal life and upbringing for their son, but neither of them is prepared for the consistent sleepless nights when their little one can’t sleep for more than 15 minutes, which preys on their ever-diminishing fragile mental states. As both parents begin to experience strange figures and disturbances around their house, neither can determine if what’s happening is something more sinister or if it’s just their minds playing tricks on them (cue the Geto Boys).
Dread Central recently chatted with Soter about what inspired Dark Circles, his comedic roots with Broken Lizard and much more. Check out...

*there are spoilers here. Tagline: "In this home, no one sleeps." Director/writer: Paul Soter. Cast: Johnathon Schaech, Andrea Frankle, Pell James, and Philippe Brenninkmeyer. Dark Circles is an indie horror title from the After Dark Originals label. The film has been shot by first time feature filmmaker Paul Soter and much of the action onscreen is confined to one set. In a large house, a family must deal with a haunting and possibly a crazed lunatic. What is real is mostly left up to the viewer. However, a few horror fans might be tempted to decide if events are hallucinations or something more dangerous. And, this well shot film is continuously entertaining. Dark Circles focuses on a husband and wife. Alex (Johnathon Schaech) and Penny (Pell James) have their hands full with a new child to raise and a new home to settle into. Paul Soter the writer of Super Troopers (2001) and other lesser known comedies tries his hand at writing and directing a psychological thriller. Yet even if Soter is new to the genre his cast has some horror experience even if none of them are accustomed to starring roles. Johnathon Shaech had supporting roles in both The Culling (2013) and Quarantine (2008). Andrea Frankle played a bit role in The Reaping (2007) and Pell James played a wouldbe victim in Zodiac (2007). All in all writing directing and casting leave something to be desired.

Dark Circles – no sleep! In other words: in this house no one sleeps! Just saw the first trailer for the upcoming horror movie which comes from director Paul Soter, and I don’t know what to say… it looks pretty cool to me. Basically, we’re dealing with some hallucinations, supernatural things, insomnia and stuff like that, so yeah – not bad at all, check it out in the rest of this report!
So, written and directed by Paul Soter, this horror movie (or, even better – another psychological thriller) follows young parents who move to a 19th century farmhouse in the country once their new child is born.
Happy family? Think again!
Or, even better – read the official synopsis:
When new parents Alex and Penny retreat from the city and move into a place outside town, the stress and massive sleep-deprivation caused by their infant has both of them seeing things...

Brothers Charlie (Nathan Grubbs) and Bobby (Marc Senter) Fontaine are part of an underground, mob-run fighting competition held on New Orleans riverboats. Charlie, the older, more stable of the two, has a steady job in construction and a serious girlfriend (Pell James). Bobby is a directionless playboy who is involved in several shady odd jobs, many of them mob-related. The siblings are the progeny of a local fighting legend and are respected by their late father’s peers and the old school mobster hierarchy. Though both brothers enjoy a surface celebrity, neither has been able to achieve much beyond a working class existence.
When debtors go after Bobby, his protective brother ends up with a broken leg while defending him. Recovering from his injury, Charlie marries his girlfriend Kat – a timid, unmotivated woman...

Brawler is a ferociously original film built on the bones of very old stories – some of the oldest in literary history. It is a part of a new sub-genre of films including Bellflower and Another Earth that are “a complicated dance between what I guess you could call the traditionally more masculine [genre] storytelling and this more feminine, intimate human drama” as Brit Marling, writer and star of Another Earth explains it.
Or to put it another way, all three films are narratives about the most twisted, fucked-up relationships humanly possible, framed in the context of a genre narrative.

Wayne Kramer (Running Scared, The Cooler) is developing a dark comedy called Pawn Shop Chronicles, and he's been able to pull together a hell of a good cast that includes Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser, Elijah Wood, Vincent D’Onofrio, Pell James, Thomas Jane, Lukas Haas, Chi McBride, Ashlee Simpson, Kevin Rankin, DJ Qualls, Michael Cudlitz, and Norman Reedus.
They all join Paul Walker, who is starring in and producing the film, which follows "a man searching for his abducted wife, a couple of white-supremacist meth heads and a sad sack Elvis impersonator all linked through items sold or found in a small Southern town’s local pawn shop." This sounds like it could be a pretty wild movie. Producer Jordan Schur had this to say in a statement,
This is a superbly written mind-bender of a story that grabs you from the first line, and doesn’t let go. We...

Shooting has just kicked off in Louisiana on the twisted comedy, Pawn Shop Chronicles, which stars an eclectic ensemble cast including Elijah Wood, Matt Dillon (pictured), Paul Walker, Brendan Fraser, Vincent D'Onofrio, Pell James, Thomas Jane, Lukas Haas, Chi McBride and Ashlee Simpson. The film, being touted as a dark comedy in the vein of Pulp Fiction and The Big Lebowski, follows a man searching for his abducted wife, a gang of white supremacist meth heads and a sad sack Elvis impersonator - all of whom are linked through items sold or found in a small Southern town's local pawn shop.

Last year we heard that former Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst was looking to continue his low key career behind movie cameras (after directing The Longshots and The Education of Charlie Banks) with a dark comedy called Pawn Shop Chronicles starring Paul Walker. It sounded pretty outlandish following multiple interconnected stories centered around a missing wedding ring which leads to a wild-goose chase involving meth addicts, skinheads and an Elvis impersonator. But the project never came together, and now the film is in the hands of Wayne Kramer (Running Scared, The Cooler) with one huge ensemble cast. Though it doesn't sound like Paul Walker is involved anymore in the report from Deadline, plenty of names have surfaced in his place including Brendan Fraser, Elijah Wood, Matt Dillon, Vincent D'Onofrio, Thomas Jane, Chi McBride, Lukas Haas, Pell James, Kevin Rankin, D.J. Qualls, Michael Cudlitz, Norman Reedus and Ashlee Simpson. That's quite...

Wayne Kramer (The Cooler, Running Scared) hit his first big bump, career-wise, with the release of 2009′s Crossing Over — fun fact: Harrison Ford literally does not remember being in that film — but those who liked his prior two are probably willing to let that one go. So, it’s with some optimism that I read he’s assembled a large, impressive cast for Pawn Shop Chronicles, a dark comedy he’s already started directing; Adam Minarovich is behind the screenplay.
The full lineup consists of Elijah Wood, Lukas Haas, Thomas Jane, Matt Dillon, Brendan Fraser, Vincent D’Onofrio, Pell James, Chi McBride, Ashlee Simpson, Kevin Rankin, DJ Qualls, Michael Cudlitz, and Norman Reedus. They’re all starring in a film whose logline brings Running Scared to mind — and I hold that as a good sign — although this comes across as an anthology piece at first glance.
