At the close of a particularly fraught year for Hollywood screenwriters, Monday saw the release of the annual Black List – a ranking of the top unproduced scripts in show business.
Voted on by nearly 400 creative executives, this year’s favorite project that has yet to receive a greenlight is “Bad Boy” by Travis Braun, described simply as the tale of a rescue dog who suspects his loving new owner is a serial killer. C2 Motion Picture Group is financing the project and meeting with potential distribution partners imminently.
The list includes 76 titles and covers wide narrative ground. Kirill Baru and Eric Zimmerman’s “The Great Pretender” is the story of America’s sweetheart Tom Hanks getting kidnapped, and the doppelgänger who must step in to save him. Hunter Toro’s “Boy Falls From Sky” tells of an anxious playwright whose world is turned upside down by lies and bone-crushing accidents...

The Black List has revealed its 2023 list of best unproduced screenplays, with scripts that include a biopic of country singer Patsy Cline, the rise and fall of Sam Bankman-Fried crypto empire Ftx, and an action-comedy about Tom Hanks and his doppelganger.
Topping this year’s list is a feature script from Travis Braun titled Bad Boy, with a logline that reads: “A rescue dog suspects his loving new owner is a serial killer.”
Elsewhere on the list is a screenplay about the Broadway playwright behind notorious disaster Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark from writer Hunter Toro, and a script focused on soccer star Didier Drogba from Jackson Kellard.
“This year, the industry was defined by a debate about the value of writers within it, and I think it’s inevitable that this year’s Black List means more than it has in the past,” said Black List founder and CEO Franklin Leonard.

Second place went to Justin Piasecki’s Stakehorse which follows a racetrack veterinarian who runs an off-the-books ER for criminals, and finds his practice and life in jeopardy when he’s recruited for his patient’s heist.

Exclusive: Deadline has learned that two-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan has exited WME, the agency he’s been at since 2011. The director recently had his seventh No. 1 opening at the box office this past weekend with Universal’s Knock at the Cabin. The film debuted to 14.1 million domestic, 21M worldwide off a thrifty 20M production cost.
Shyamalan’s former WME agents Tanya Cohen and Rich Cook went over to Range Media Partners to become managers, and the 3.3 billion-grossing filmmaker followed them in April 2021. This happens in the business — clients go where their working relationships are. Cook is a Range co-founder.
Range also represents Shyamalan’s production company, Blinding Edge Pictures, run by president of production Ashwin Rajan.

Exclusive: A+E Studios and Range Media Partners have prevailed in a competitive auction surrounding Swedish crime novelist Christoffer Carlsson’s International bestseller Blaze Me a Sun and its follow-up, Under the Storm, securing film and TV rights to both titles.
The announcement comes hot on the heels of Good Morning America‘s naming of Blaze Me a Sun as its Buzz Pick of the Week. The title, first published in the U.S. by Hogarth Books on January 3, tells the tale of a small town’s collective guilt when a serial killer commits his first murder the same night the prime minister is assassinated. Under the Storm has not yet been published in the U.S., though it’s currently available in Sweden.
“We are delighted to be working with Christoffer to adapt Blaze Me A Sun and Under The Storm,” said Range’s Co-Heads of International, Oliver Riddle & Thomas Daley.

Exclusive: Michael Bay has left WME, the agency where he has spent the bulk of his directing career. The exit has been in the works for a couple of weeks. Bay isn’t taking meetings at the moment, and in a memo he sent the agency, he left open the possibility of a return. But it seems unlikely from here.
Bay had been repped for years principally by Ari Emanuel, and this goes back to when his primary was John Fogelman, the latter of whom exited the agency a decade ago. Bay has had a number of point agents, but his main guy has been Rich Cook. Until Cook exited to be one of the founding partners of Range Media Partners. Cook continued to share Bay with WME at Range, but the Transformers director’s run with WME seemed to sour over the experience with his most recent film, the shot-in-the-pandemic actioner Ambulance.

When UTA announced its surprise acquisition of London-based Curtis Brown Group last month, it was heralded as an aggressive and strategic move into the UK talent space, causing the industry on both sides of the pond to sit up and take notice. U.S. agencies have been canvassing UK companies for a number of years, but this deal marks the splashiest effort yet and potentially draws UTA closer to major talent on Curtis Brown’s books such as Robert Pattinson, Margaret Atwood and John le Carré.
There are now question marks surrounding the sharing of talent, potential structural changes and what this might mean for UK agenting at large.
A current interesting case study involves British actor Joseph Quinn. After his breakout role as mop-haired metal head Eddie Munson in the fourth season of Netflix’s Stranger Things, Quinn has become one of the most in-demand rising UK talents up for grabs in the U.

They made their dramatic pivot at the height of industry instability; movie theaters remained closed from Covid, production was slow to rebound as no one was writing Covid policies, and that meant no completion bonds; and studio tentpoles were being unloaded to streamers. The rep business was also in flux, with the WGA bent on eradicating the packages and affiliated productions that had increasingly fueled agency coffers.
So, a consortium of agents from CAA, UTA, WME and other firms, repping such A-listers as Bradley Cooper, Tom Hardy, Keira Knightley, Emilia Clarke and Ramy Youssef, decided to embrace change,...

A+E Networks has taken a minority stake in management and production firm Range Media Partners. No financial details are being disclosed but the stake is believed to be in the high teens percent and the deal in the $50 million ballpark, with Range’s valuation at around $300 million. That is a hefty valuation, especially for a company that is just a year and a half old. It is close to what one of Hollywood biggest, most established management-production companies, 3 Arts, sold for in 2018 after 27 years in the business.
The investment, spearheaded by Paul Buccieri, President & Chairman, A+E Networks, and Range CEO Peter Micelli, will see A+E Studios, A+E Networks’ production arm led by Barry Jossen, become a co-production partner for scripted TV projects emerging from Range. It also gives A+E Networks, which operates the likes of A&e, History and Lifetime, a first-look deal on factual television content...

Three WME agents, Simon Faber, Solco Schuit and Tanya Cohen, are leaving the agency.
Motion picture lit agents Schuit and Faber are believed to be partnering together, possibly to produce.
Fellow lit agent Cohen is said to be transitioning to management. There is no likely destination yet, with a number of companies — including Range and Sugar23, where fellow WME agent Meredith Wechter is headed — believed to be in play. Range seems most likely, as she and Rich Cook worked together on a number of clients.
Faber has been at WME (and its predecessor Endeavor) for 14.5 years. Schuit, who also transitioned to WME from Endeavor, was named partner last month.
Cohen, who joined WME in 2015, was named partner last year. Before that, she worked at Verve and Paradigm.

WGA West executive director David Young is accused of threatening to “kill” WME veteran Rick Rosen during a phone call in August, according to legal filings that mark the latest twist in the litigation between the guild and Hollywood’s two largest talent agencies.
The declaration by Rosen came as part of a motion WME filed asking a federal judge to intervene to force a settlement in the long standoff between WME and WGA over the guild’s new rules of engagement for agents who represent members. CAA filed a similar motion on Tuesday.
A spokesman for the WGA denied the allegation against Young and WGA West president David Goodman as cited in Rosen’s declaration.
“After Mr. Young repeatedly threatened to “kill” me during a phone call on August 11, 2020, I called Wgaw’s President David Goodman, with whom I have a good professional relationship. I informed Mr. Goodman of Mr.

Exclusive: Range Media Partners has locked 17 more clients for the new management/production company. This comes as its lineup of ground floor partners has changed as Lucinda Moorhead, who left UTA to join Range, has decided she will instead stay with the agency and not join the upstart venture.
On the heels of its launch earlier this month, the new Range clients range from talent to filmmakers and TV writer/producers. The company has also confirmed the clients Deadline first reported would be joining the new company.
On the talent side, Range Media Partners has signed Alessandro Nivola, Alyssa Milano, Andrew Lincoln, Eric Singer, Shea Whigham, and Vincent Cassell. Also coming are filmmakers Baltasar Kormakur, Gareth Edwards; The Raid: Redemption director Gareth Evans (who continues to be repped by Management 360); Jc Chandor; Patrick Hughes (The Hitman’s Bodyguard); Ric Roman Waugh; and Martin Zandvliet.
On the TV writer/producer side, the new clients are Jackie Clarke; Gracie Glassmeyer; Rene Gube; and Rosa Handelman.
They join an original influx of clients that includes Naomi Ackie, Michael Bay, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Jessie Buckley, Jerrod Carmichael, Emilia Clarke, Bradley Cooper, Johnny Depp, Taron Egerton, Michael Fassbender, Luca Guadagnino, Tom Hardy, Stephan James, Anna Kendrick, Taylor Kitsch, Keira Knightley, Danny McBride/Rough House Pictures, Martin McDonagh, Michael Shannon and Ramy Youssef.
