Confession time. I’m not the biggest Kevin Hart fan. I don’t mind the actor/comedian in small doses – a supporting actor in films such as the remake of Death at a Funeral and the Scary Movie franchise, but I can’t sit through any of his stand-up shows in there entirety and the last movie hes was the “star” of, Ride Along, was – frankly – awful. However I am always willing to give Hart’s film a go – especially when they look, albeit from the trailer, as hilarious as The Wedding Ringer.

A smart premise, appealing performances from Kevin Hart and Josh Gad and a magnificent Lost in-joke featuring Jorge Garcia can't redeem a script that's too self-satisfied to remember the importance of basic details like credible characterisation and believable motivations.
Hart is a ball of energy as Jimmy Callahan, an opportunist who hires himself out as a Best Man to socially maladjusted strangers who need one for their wedding day. The one rule is that once the wedding is over, they part ways forever. Step forward Doug, a man with literally no friends who has still managed to procure a glamorous bride (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) and is in desperate need of help. Can Jimmy and an assorted bunch of wrong'uns convince everyone that they're Doug's lifelong friends?

6th Update, Tuesday, 3 Pm: Rentrak Theatrical filed the weekend’s actuals with Warner Bros.’ American Sniper counting a four-week cume through yesterday of $110.4M. Talk about the spoils of war: American Sniper propelled the 2015 box office, in its first 19 days, 3.6% percent over the same frame last year with $667M. It stands to reason that this would be the highest-grossing four-day Mlk weekend of all-time with $248.5M after American Sniper broke a slew of records, read Eastwood’s career-high bow, best three-day opening ever during January and February. Previous Mlk record was 2009 with $231.5M when Sony comedy Paul Blart: Mall Cop zoomed up a four-day bow of $39.2M. American Sniper had the biggest theater average of the four-day weekend with $30,100, followed by Sony Classic’s Still Alice, which chalked up $20,685 PTA or $248K in 12 venues.
The consensus is that American Sniper is going to hold for another two weekends. Wide releases...

Let's clear up a few things about The Wedding Ringer right off the bat. First, it's a Kevin Hart film. If you don't like Kevin Hart (I do) then don't go see the movie, you most likely won't enjoy it at all. Secondly, it's rather misogynistic. This is more a bromantic comedy than a romantic comedy as the men primarily speak as if the ladies aren't in the room. If such comedy offends you, perhaps you too might want to sit this one out. Otherwise, The Wedding Ringer is a mixed bag. I smiled and laughed frequently while I found myself saying, "Okay, get on with it," more than once. It's not a strong brom-com contender, but it should satisfy the right audience in a pinch. There is little out of the stereotypical norm as we meet Doug (Josh Gad), an overweight, nerdy, loner type, who's engage to be married to Gretchen,...

While “The Wedding Ringer” isn’t the total waste of time that its painful trailer (and January release date) threatens, it’s also a movie whose occasional good ideas are ultimately drowned out by sloppy, contrived screenwriting. On the scale of Kevin Hart vehicles, it’s not up to the standards of “Think Like a Man” and “About Last Night” — but hey, at least it’s better than “Ride Along” or “Think Like a Man Too.”

“Blackhat,” the Michael Mann-directed movie about international cyberhacking that opens Friday, could hardly be more timely given the November attack on Sony Pictures. But the R-rated thriller starring Chris Hemsworth and Viola Davis is a very long shot to break out at the box office over the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend that kicks off Friday.
It’s projected to take in around $10 million over the four days — not what Legendary Entertainment and distributor Universal Pictures envisioned from “Blackhat,” which has a $70 million production budget.

Though awards season is just around the corner, with plenty of hopeful quality movie like Interstellar, Foxcatcher and Gone Girl hitting theaters, the dumping ground of January and February is coming, which means we're getting trailers for those movies too. The Wedding Ringer doesn't really look abysmal, but it certainly doesn't look all that funny in this new trailer. As someone who loves Josh Gad, but doesn't enjoy Kevin Hart, the two stars cancel each other out for me. But I will concede that the joke about the fake groomsmen and The Goonies actually made me laugh out loud, so maybe there's hope for this one. Watch? Chicago – One the hottest, most creative and “fluffiest” stand-up comics working today is Gabriel Iglesias. The comedian riffs on the circumstances of his own life, as he deals with his adventures in the comedy world. He has put that all together in a new stand-up concert film, appropriately entitled “The Fluffy Movie.”
Iglesias was born in San Diego, but grew up in Long Beach, California. After high school, he worked for a mobile phone company while doing stand-up comedy on the side. When he was 21 years old, he turned to stand-up full time. He worked his way up and gained cult-like popularity with routines that include his amazing ability to mimic voices and sound effects. He gained the nickname “Fluffy” from his act, in which he described the levels of “fatness” (Fluffy was right before, “daaaaamn” and “hell, no”). The comic has recently dropped 100 pounds, and is primed to hit the big screen.

For anyone who has ever been in need of a Best Man at their wedding, but don't quite have a a vast collection of friends to choose from, I'm not sure why you'd go out of your way to hire someone like Kevin Hart. But alas, that's the plot of The Wedding Ringer, a new comedy that sees Josh Gad as an awkward guy who is in desperate need of a partner in crime to help his wedding go off without a hitch. So he hires the services of Jimmy (Hart) to pretend to be his friend for the event. But things get complicated when he also lies about a whole slew of groomsmen. Of course, wackiness ensues, but we're not very entertained. Watch? Imagine "I Love You, Man" with a mercenary twist, maybe, and you've got "The Wedding Ringer."
The comedy, which is scheduled for release on January 16, 2015, will star Kevin Hart as a guy who sells his services as a best man for awkward grooms-to-be. His latest client is a fella played by Josh Gad, of "Frozen" fame, who goes one step beyond by finding no less than nine fake groomsmen. (Seriously, who has nine groomsmen and a best man? Cut that out.)
Jeremy Garelick and Jay Lavender, the guys behind the 2006 comedy "The Break-Up" with Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn, wrote "The Wedding Ringer." This will be Garelick's feature-length directorial debut.
Hart is bringing in the mega-bucks lately, what with the record-breaking success of "Ride Along," his immensely popular stand-up performances, and roles in movies like "Think Like a Man" and its upcoming sequel "Think Like a Man Too," which will hit theaters in June.

Gad is set to be one of the awkward grooms-to-be who needs a right-hand. He then digs himself and Hart in deeper by lying about the nine groomsmen he has lined up for the wedding,...

The lovable and hilarious Steve Carell is a bona-fide TV star, but his big screen career has never taken off quite the same way. There were plenty of successes along the way, and he hasn't had an honest to goodness flop (actually, Evan Almighty lost a whole lot of money), but he just hasn't had that movie role that makes you think "Uh-oh, I think Scranton is going to get a new branch manager," you know? I don't know if Carell's latest will be the role that makes him into a full-fledged movie star, but The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Business Blog is reporting that the comedian is in talks to star in the golf-comedy Missing Links.

I enjoy Rick Reilly. Everything gets a little funnier when you see sporting life through his perspective. A 1998 article about Ohio State linebacker Andy Katzenmoyer began, “How are you with condoms?” And in a seamless transition, he pivots right to their national championship hopes, as if the two ideas have any kind of connection together, when he continues to say, “Anything you might know about them could help No. 1-ranked Ohio State win college football’s national championship.” The idea being that Katzenmoyer couldn’t pass an AIDS awareness class. Reilly’s defection to Espn was like Benedict Arnold; it’s strange to see an eleven time sportswriter of the year switch boats in midstream. Unfortunately, he co-wrote Leatherheads, which not even George Clooney could save. But the good news is that now his comedic novel Missing Links is being adapted by screenwriter Jay Lavender (The Break-Up), according to Risky Business.

Steve Carell might well be hitting the fairway for new golfing comedy Missing Links. Jay Lavender, one of the writers behind The Break-Up, has been hired to write the script, and once it's been developed the film will have to wait in line as Carell picks between various projects to cram into the gaps between...

Steve Carell for Missing Links
Carell will at least produce Missing Links and, if he likes what he sees from the script, he will likely get in front of the camera for it also. Warner Bros. has given the task of writing the screenplay to The Break-Up scribe Jay Lavender. As long as the comedy is nothing like The Break-Up, the production is off to a good start.

While I admit that I do still love the curly haired comedic force that is Will Ferrell, his recent foray into nonsensical off-the-wall sports comedies (e.g. Semi-Pro) is beginning to lose its appeal. Thankfully he's moved on and seems to be passing the reins over to Steve Carell, as THR's Risky Biz Blog reports that the actor will star and produce Missing Links, a comedy set in the world of golf about a player angling for a better place to drive his balls. Okay that sounded dirty, but we've all seen 40-Year-Old Virgin so I think we can handle it. Writer Jay Lavender (The Break-Up) adapted the script from a novel by Espn’s Rick Reilly. More specifically, Reilly's novel "tells of a group of bumblers who, after playing for years at a run-down municipal golf course in a working-class Boston neighborhood, concoct a series of schemes that they...

Jeremy Garelick and Jay Lavender, the screenwriters behind The Break-Up, will make their directorial debut on The Golden Tux, a comedy for Dimension Films that will star Dan Fogler. Todd Phillips is producing. Tux was the script that introduced Garelick and Lavender to Hollywood in 2002, when it was set up at Dimension. Over the years, the project saw several actors and directors try it on for size, with the duo tailoring the script for them. After the success of Break-Up and with Dimension now high on the project, Phillips and the Phillips Co.'s Scott Budnick tossed the writers' name into the helming hat. "We've definitely come full circle," Garelick said. "It was the first thing we sold. It's been five or six years, but now we'll be able to make it and have it be our vision." Although this is their first directorial outing, Garelick said the duo have been soaking up a lot of knowledge.
