A Virginia school district voted on Friday to undo a 2020 decision that removed the names of three Confederate military officers from schools in the district.
The Shenandoah County school board voted to rename Honey Run and Mountain View, two schools under their purview, Ashby-Lee Elementary and Stonewall Jackson High.
The schools were renamed in 2020 following a national outcry and protests over the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin. The protests called for a re-examination of ingrained racial discrimination in the United States — including the continued veneration...

Lawmakers in Tennessee have approved a measure that permits school staff to carry concealed handguns on school grounds. The bill now awaits the governor’s decision. The move comes one year after a tragic shooting incident claimed the lives of six individuals at a Nashville school.
The Tennessee House passed the legislation 68-28, with four Republicans breaking ranks to join all the Democrats in opposition. The state Senate, also controlled by the GOP, had previously approved the bill.
State Rep. Ryan Williams (R) spoke in favor of the bill, emphasizing school safety. In the House session, Williams stated, “I believe that this is a method by which we can do that because what you’re doing is you’re creating a deterrent.”
Under the proposed legislation, faculty and staff members who wish to carry concealed handguns on school premises must complete at least 40 hours of specialized training in school policing each year.

Writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile is aiming for an October 18th theatrical release date – and with that date just six months away, Paramount decided to start building the hype for Smile 2 during their panel at CinemaCon today. They showed a teaser trailer to the people who attended their panel, and in the audience was JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek!
Lance describes what he saw in this teaser: “Story appears to be set around a Taylor Swift type of mega-star artist (Naomi Scott) who gets sucked into the curse of Smile. The sequel has a bigger budget and slicker look, seems to be bigger in scope. There was a very cool scene where a crowd of people under control of the entity are in a tight backstage hallway chasing Naomi Scott, all of the smiling in that creepy way. Plot-wise, it doesn’t give much away.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
Part of the structure of this editorial series is working through the Amityville “franchise” in chronological order, so it was surprising to discover that Amityville Cop (2021) wasn’t listed on the Wikipedia list of titles.
Turns out Amityville Cop is something of an Amityville Prison (aka Against the Night) in which the word “Amityville” is never spoken and there’s no concrete connection to any of the other films. Sure, there’s a Satanic cult who dress in red, but there are none of Dustin Ferguson’s masks like Amityville in the Hood and the cult leader, Empress Ciara (Laurene Landon), has no back story that connects to any of the other villains in the “series.”

At last week’s A Day of Unreasonable Conversation held at The Getty Center, entertainment industry members heard from Hollywood and government leaders with varying cultural perspectives.
Jill Biden and Halle Berry at A Day of Unreasonable Conversation
Through thought-provoking discussions, impactful performances, and, at times, emotional conversations, A Day of Unreasonable Conversation surfaced new perspectives on today’s most complex topics to an audience of television writers, showrunners, and executives. Speakers were vulnerable in sharing stories that often do not get heard and urged the audience of TV creators to incorporate these experiences into their work.
First Lady Jill Biden and Halle Berry candidly discussed formerly taboo women’s health topics such as menopause, emphasizing the need for a new approach to women’s health research. Berry shared a personal story about how she realized that she was going through perimenopause, bringing forth blushes and laughter from the audience.

If the only April release was my top pick of the month it would be one of the finest lineups of the years, but thankfully there’s more to recommend. Featuring films about cinephilic obsession, subversive superhero tales, and what is sure to be at least one divisive big-screen near-future adventure, check out the list of must-sees below.
12 & 11. Kim’s Video (David Redmon and Ashley Sabin; April 5) and I Like Movies (Chandler Levack; April 8)
Anyone interested in physical media will appreciate a pair of films this month. Kim’s Video explores the strange story of the East Village establishment that housed around 55,000 DVDs while I Like Movies is a Canadian coming-of-age tale about a video store clerk who has bigger dreams in life, and is chockfull of cinephile-related humor that rang quite a familiar bell for this writer. John Fink said in his review of the former, “A sweeping documentary...

On Wednesday, Arizona State Senator Eva Burch had an abortion.
Deciding to terminate a pregnancy is a highly personal decision, one that usually takes place quietly, with the involvement of the patient, their medical providers, a cadre of loved ones, and — to the bewilderment and frustration of those seeking the procedure — the government.
Burch’s abortion was anything but a quiet affair. On Monday, just two days before her termination, the Democratic lawmaker gave a viral speech on the floor of the state Senate in which she announced that she...

New York’s top law enforcement officer has launched an investigation into a massive wireless network outage that left AT&T customers unable to use their mobile devices last month.
On Thursday, New York State Attorney General Letitia James said her office has opened a probe into the cause of the outage as well as AT&T’s response to the issue.
“Americans rely on cell service providers for consistent and reliable service to help them with nearly every aspect of their daily lives,” James said in a statement. “Nationwide outages are not just an inconvenience, they can be dangerous, and it’s critical that we protect consumers when an outage occurs. The heated debate over the awards ceremony of this year’s Berlin Film Festival shows no signs of cooling down.
On Tuesday, German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann called out the Berlinale for allowing what he called “antisemitic” statements to go unchallenged at the awards gala in Berlin Saturday night. Speaking to newspapers of Germany’s Funke media group, Buschmann said the film festival “suffered serious damage” as a result and suggested there could be criminal consequences for some of the statements and slogans.
The awards ceremony for the 74th Berlinale turned sharply political as one award winner after another used their festival platform to call out the Israeli government for its actions in the war in Gaza.
Ben Russell, co-director of Direct Action, winner of the best film in Berlin’s Encounters sidebar, used the word “genocide” to describe Israeli military action in the region. Palestinian filmmaker Basel Adra, whose...

Dylan Gelula may be best known for playing the role of Xanthippe Voorhees in 13 episodes of the Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt… but since I haven’t gotten around to watching that show yet, where I know her from is the recent Nicolas Cage movie Dream Scenario, where her character has a very memorable interaction with Cage. Since Gelula’s section of the movie is also the part that sticks with me more than any other, I’m glad to hear (via Deadline) that she has been cast in writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here) – a project we’re referring to as Smile 2 until we hear otherwise. This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "True Detective: Night Country."
Showrunner Issa López had multiple sources of inspiration for "True Detective: Night Country." If you haven't clocked some of the more obvious ones by now, they include John Carpenter's Arctic horror classic "The Thing," "The Silence of the Lambs" (which gave López the idea to cast Jodie Foster as police chief Liz Danvers), and David Fincher's "Seven," from which the new showrunner borrowed one particularly disturbing moment.
On top of those major touchstones, López clearly drew from her own experiences. The Mexico City native grew up with a Catholic, somewhat superstitious mother and a communist atheist father. Which, if you haven't noticed by now, is a contradiction that finds expression in how "Night Country" walks a tightrope between gritty realism and supernatural mystery.
But there's also another big influence on the new season of "True Detective": the first season.

[This story contains spoilers from Fargo’s season five finale, “Bisquik.”]
For Fargo season five star Juno Temple, nothing was going to get in the way of Dorothy “Dot” Lyon’s mostly happy ending.
When the dust settled on Noah Hawley’s tremendous fifth season of Fargo, Dot finally overcame her wickedly abusive ex-husband Roy Tillman (Jon Hamm), his hired gun who happened to be a 500-year-old sin-eater named Ole Munch (Sam Spruell) and her mistrustful mother-in-law, Lorraine Lyon (Jennifer Jason Leigh). Dot thought her quarrel with Munch was settled when he saved her and freed her at Roy’s ranch so she could put a stop to the latter’s vicious cycle of abuse once and for all, but a year after Roy ended up in handcuffs, Dot and her daughter Scotty (Sienna King) arrived home to see Munch sitting in their living room with their respective, unsuspecting husband and father, Wayne (David Rysdahl...

Back in the days of Blockbuster and local video rental stores, there was always that one rack — the one packed with horror flicks with gory-looking covers that scared Eighties and Nineties kids witless. Now, that same vibe has come to Shudder in the form of Josh Forbes’ Destroy All Neighbors, starring none other than Eighties hero Alex Winter.
Winter, star of 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and 1987’s The Lost Boys, has mostly been in his writer-director era for the past few decades — save for a recent appearance as Bill S.

What happens to those who make great sacrifices in order to undertake morally courageous acts? We might imagine any number of things, but, this film suggests, most often they are simply forgotten.
New York State Assemblyman George M Michaels was, for a politician, a fairly modest man who toed the Democratic Party line and wasn’t the sort to rock the boat – until, that is, the fateful day of 9 April, 1970, when the State of New York found itself deadlocked on a bill to remove restrictions on access to abortion. This was three years before Roe vs. Wade and was the first time such a bill had made its way to a state legislature. Passions ran high on both sides. Party had little to do with it. Michaels had voted against but, at the last minute, having listened to the pleas of his son and his son’s girlfriend, he reversed.

Fresh off a landmark legal defeat last week, Google has now agreed to settle a separate suit by a coalition state attorneys general – co-led by New York Ag Letitia James — accusing the tech giant of monopolistic conduct in its app store that increases costs for consumer and developers.
Google will hand over $630 million in restitution to consumers who made purchases on the Google Play Store between August 2016 and September 2023 and were harmed by Google’s anticompetitive practices. It will pay the states $70 million for their claims. Eligible consumers will be notified of the settlement and receive payments through PayPal, Venmo, check or Ach transfer.
For much of the case, the attorneys general litigated alongside Epic Games and Match. Match announced a separate settlement earlier this year. Epic Games took its case to trial. A jury unanimously found that Google’s anticompetitive conduct violated the federal antitrust laws early last week.

The SAG-AFTRA strike isn’t the only industrial action in town this fall.
Striking hotel workers this morning staged another noisy protest — replete with drums and vuvuzelas — outside the AFM’s Méridien Delfina HQ today as part of long-running industrial action. It’s the biggest and loudest event so far with hundreds expected for a rally and march that will see protesters walk from the Delfina to the Viceroy, another struck hotel, and then to Santa Monica City Hall.
Hundreds of workers from Santa Monica hotels have been striking for months in a bid for more equitable contracts and conditions.
The AFM, which wraps tomorrow, has become caught in the crosshairs having moved this year to the Delfina from longtime home the Loews. The Delfina was recently the subject of an LA Times exposé which claimed it was using staffing agencies to hire homeless migrants as replacement workers for strikers.

Hwang Seung Gi and Kim Soo Jin have directed the Korean period drama series, The Matchmakers, which showcases the strict rules and beliefs revolving around marriage in the old Korean culture. With easygoing characters, the plot of the drama is quite predictable, and we are able to predict the intentions of the characters almost instantly at the very beginning of the series. The ways of the matchmakers and the social stigma associated with them are also a major focus of the show. The drama is replete with royal politics, and the injustices that are faced by the widows. Despite being well-stocked with serious issues, the drama makes them all look light, with hints of comic relief added to each scene. Will Jeong Soon Deok be able to serve her life’s purpose as a good matchmaker? Will Shim Jeong Woo be able to go beyond the King’s rules marrying again?...

Leonard Allan Cure, an African American male wrongly convicted for the armed robbery of a Walgreens and sentenced to life in prison before his release in December 2020, was shot by a sheriff’s deputy in Georgia last week.
Cure’s body was identified by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The bureau is now overseeing an independent investigation of the shooting in Camden County.
According to a news release from the bureau, an unnamed Camden County deputy initiated a traffic stop yesterday on Interstate 95.
A spokesman for the County sheriff’s office stated that Cure was pulled over for speeding. Cure had been driving 90 mph in an area where the speed limit is 70 mph.
Although Cure did as the deputy asked and got out of the car, he was placed under arrest.
The bureau claimed that “after not complying with the deputy’s request, the deputy tased Cure” before “Cure assaulted” him.

In the weeks leading up to the start of his $250 million civil fraud trial in New York, Donald Trump and his attorneys privately discussed how they believed defeat in this trial was preordained. Their best chance — and it wasn’t much, according to two sources familiar with the matter and another two people briefed on internal deliberations — would be to fight the case on appeal.
This belief led to the development of an approach to the case that centers around chaos and cacophony, rather than any attempt to win it on the merits.

Prosecutors in Florida have accused rapper Ynw Melly of witness tampering ahead of his double murder retrial.
They charged Melly with making sure a key witness didn’t testify at his first murder trial.
Melly’s trial ended in a hung jury that voted 9-3 for the conviction. Jury selection for the retrial is slated to begin next week.
They specifically allege that Melly is a member of the Bloods street gang and used phone calls made by jail inmates at his request and letters passed between inmates.
Melly’s attorney, James Benjamin, said that the charges “are clearly retaliation” after he accused Harold Pryor, the Broward County State Attorney, of a coverup.

Gavin Newsom Vetoes WGA & SAG-AFTRA-Backed-Bill To Provide Unemployment Benefits To Striking Workers
Updated, with WGA comment: California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill that would have made striking workers eligible for unemployment benefits.
WGA and SAG-AFTRA backed the legislation amid their walkout, but Newsom said in a statement that the state’s Ui trust fund is “vulnerable to insolvency.”
“Any expansion of eligibility for Ui benefits could increase California’s outstanding federal Ui debt projected to be nearly $20 billion by the end of the year and could jeopardize California’s Benefit Cost Ratio add-on waiver application, significantly increasing taxed on employers,” Newsom said, adding that the state is responsible for the interest payments on the federal Ui loan and has paid $362.7 million in interest with another $302 million due this month.
“Now is not the time to increase costs or incur this sizable debt,” he wrote.

Updated, 10:07 Am: Ryan Koss pleaded not guilty Monday in connection with the collision that led to the death of Treat Williams.
Koss, 35, was turning his Honda SUV left into a parking lot when he hit Williams on his motorcycle. Williams, 71, of Manchester Center, was pronounced dead at Albany Medical Center in New York.
Koss could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison if he’s convicted of gross negligent operation that resulted in a death, according to AP.
Koss is the managing creative director of the Dorset Theatre Festival in Vermont and has reportedly said he knew Williams for years and considered him a friend. The AP reports Koss issued a statement in August saying he was devastated by Williams’ death and offered his “sincerest condolences” to Williams’ family, but he denied wrongdoing and said charges weren’t warranted.

A bill that would provide unemployment insurance to striking workers in California passed the state Assembly on Monday and now is headed to the Senate Labor Committee and then to the Senate floor. If passed there, Senate Bill 799 would go to Gov. Gavin Newsom for his signature.
A similar bill passed the Assembly in 2019 but failed in the Senate by two votes.
The bill has received the backing of the Writers Guild, which has been on strike since May 2, and SAG-AFTRA, which has been striking since July 14. Strikers in New York and New Jersey are entitled to collect unemployment benefits after two weeks on the picket line, but those in California aren’t eligible because they’re considered to have left their jobs “voluntarily.”
“California is seeing an unprecedented number of striking workers who are facing significant uncertainty about the economics of their industries and changing business models,” State Sen.

This is Day 113 of the WGA strike and Day 40 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
National Union Solidarity Day kicked off on Tuesday in New York City with several hundred marchers forming a picket line that stretched two full blocks outside the Manhattan corporate offices of Amazon and HBO. Striking writers and actors saw their ranks bolstered on Tuesday by unionized teachers, nurses, truckers, musicians, retail and hotel workers, and they got vocal encouragement from union chiefs who promised to have their backs.
In what might be a sign of how long the WGA strike seems to have lasted, New York State Senator Jessica Ramos began her remarks with a reference to “the past 100 years” before checking herself to say “100 days,” a correction that drew laughs. “It felt like 100 years,” she clarified before moving on.
No better sound to start the morning than a union chorus: chants, cowbells, and Teamsters horns!

If you’re going to sit down for an interview with Jon Stewart, you best be ready to get properly pressed on the subjects you’re talking about. The talk show host doesn’t shy away from challenging subjects on guests’ views, as plenty of politicians have learned.
Over the last year, Stewart sat down with several officials across multiple states for his Apple TV+ series “The Problem With Jon Stewart,” digging in on issues like gun violence and election misinformation. Sometimes, it gets heated.
Stewart has never been shy about his own opinions, so we rounded up several top moments from the show in which he pushed back (in no particular order).
1. Arizona Attorney General
In October 2022, Stewart sat down with Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich and, despite Stewart’s best efforts, Brnovich would not admit that Donald Trump’s lies about the 2020 election being stolen were just that: lies.
