The Gotham Awards brought the usual array of surprises this year, and it wasn’t only about who walked away with the trophies.
Aside from the uproar over Robert De Niro’s speech (which is unlikely to have much bearing on the awards campaign for “Killers of the Flower Moon”), some of the other top contenders gained significant traction leading up to a crucial week ahead. New York Film Critics Circle’s announcement of the year’s best films and performances unfurls Thursday, while Golden Globes voting in the film categories started Tuesday.
At the forefront of Gothams buzz-boosters is breakout sensation Charles Melton, earning the best supporting performance award for his role in Netflix’s “May December.” In Todd Haynes’ black comedy, Melton portrays Joe Yoo, a young man navigating his marriage to an older woman, a role that stands out alongside Oscar winners Natalie Portman (“Black Swan”) and...

Could Ke Huy Quan join the Star Wars universe? Everything’s been coming up Milhouse for Ke Huy Quan since the enthusiastic actor dazzled audiences with his portrayal of Waymond Wang in The Daniels’ Best Picture-winning film Everything Everywhere All At Once. With his lethal fanny pack skills and can-do attitude, Quan’s resurfacing in Hollywood is the stuff of legend. After showing the world he’s still got what it takes to star alongside titans like Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis, offers for other notable projects arrived, including a prominent role in Marvel Studios‘ Loki Season 2. Quan plays Ouroboros (O.B.) in the time-bending Marvel series, a genius responsible for writing the Tva manual. With Loki’s season two finale in the rearview, Quan is doing what he can to remain a valued member of the Disney family. Speaking with Collider, Quan recalled a “shameless” encounter with Lucasfilm...

Ke Huy Quan just wrapped his debut run in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to his role as Ouroboros (aka O.B.) in “Loki” Season 2. While it’s undetermined if he’ll pop up in the MCU again, the actor is already eyeing a jump to another massive Disney-owned franchise: “Star Wars.” In an interview with Collider, Quan recalled his “shameless” encounter with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy in which he told her straight up to get him a role in the “Star Wars” franchise.
“I love the MCU. You know, I was able to connect with my Indiana Jones family during the award season. And, as you know, Kathleen Kennedy was the producer,” Quan said. “And she’s the head of Lucasfilm now. I did go up to her and I said, ‘Kathy, I would love to join the Star Wars family.’ That’s another wish list of mine. But honestly,...

[This story contains spoilers for Loki season two.]
In 2022, Ke Huy Quan’s comeback story was the talk of the town. As a child actor, he endeared himself to audiences with back-to-back roles in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) and The Goonies (1985), but by the early 2000s, he left acting behind for two decades, only to return to prominence in storybook fashion thanks to his Oscar-winning role as Waymond Wang in the Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All at Once. During the lead-up to his Oscar win, Quan’s journey was received with much fanfare, and he shared his account as often as he could throughout awards season.
However, in 2023, Quan experienced the other end of the spectrum, as his next high-profile job as Ouroboros (aka O.B.) on Loki season two coincided with the SAG-AFTRA strike that lasted nearly four months. So Quan has been anxiously awaiting the chance to discuss his dream of joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe,...

Spoiler Alert: This story includes discussion of major plot developments on “Loki,” which is currently streaming on Disney+.
Roughly 20 minutes after the news broke that the 118-day SAG-AFTRA strike had concluded, the first email I received from an actor’s publicist was for Ke Huy Quan. That’s how enthusiastic the recent Oscar-winning star of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was to talk about his role on “Loki,” the Marvel Studios series for Disney+ that just wrapped up its second season. When he signs on to our Zoom chat for the interview, his face is beaming.
“I’ve waited a long time to talk about ‘Loki,’” he says. “Like, talking to you right now gives me a lot of joy.”
Quan plays Ouroboros, or “Ob,” the head (and seemingly the sole employee) of the Repairs and Advancement Department of the Time Variance Authority — basically, the one person responsible for keeping the Tva’s machinery running.

When something good happens to a good person, it's always worth celebrating -- especially in a business as cutthroat as the film and TV industry. But when good things keep happening in rapid succession to someone who so clearly deserves it? Boy, do we need to cherish it like it may never happen again. When Ke Huy Quan was first cast in "Everything Everywhere All At Once," his joyful, heartfelt, and ultimately Oscar-winning performance marked the end of his decades-long hiatus from acting. It would've been all too easy for Hollywood to go right back to ignoring the beloved actor who first made his mark with "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and "The Goonies." Thankfully, this is one comeback story that hasn't wrapped up just yet.
Quan quickly followed up his Best Supporting Actor win with roles in "American Born Chinese" and, most thrillingly of all, a supporting turn in season 2 of "Loki.

The second season of Loki proved to be a wonderful addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and one of the biggest highlights (at least for me) was Ke Huy Quan as Ouroboros, the Time Variance Authority’s resident tech expert. From the sounds of things, no one loved the character more than Quan himself.
“Well, first of all, when I read the script, I instantly fell in love with Ouroboros,” Quan told Deadline. “It was so well defined on the pages, and I can see him right away. This character was not based on comic books, so it was created by our showrunner Kevin Wright and our head writer Eric Martin… I instantly wanted to play him.” After the success of Everything Everywhere All at Once, Quan got a call from his agent telling him that he would be getting a call from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and the...

Spoiler Alert! This Q&a contains spoilers for Season 2 of Loki.
Season 2 of Marvel Studios’ Loki expands upon the inner workings of the Time Variance Authority, where the God of Mischief has been working tirelessly to save, well, all of time.
That includes introducing new characters, like Ke Huy Quan’s Ouroboros. As the Tva’s dedicated handyman, everything inside the institution was either created by him or is currently maintained by him. When Loki and Mobius enter his workshop, they become his first visitors in 400 years.
Little do they know, Ouroboros is an integral part of their quest to prevent the branches of time from overloading the Temporal Loom.
Following the end of the actors strike and on the heels of the Loki Season 2 finale, Quan spoke with Deadline about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his character Ouroboros, and his own full circle career moment.

The Season 2 finale for Marvel Studios‘ Loki series debuts this evening, and Ke Huy Quan has a special message he’d like to share with fans. The Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Everything Everywhere All At Once actor plays Ouroboros (Ob) in the new season of Marvel’s hit show, which finds Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Mobius (Owen Wilson), and others struggling to keep rogue agents of the Tva (Time Variants Authority) from destroying whole timelines across the spectrum.
In Quan’s enthusiastic message, the cheerful actor expresses his gratitude for becoming a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a valued member of the Loki family. “I loved making this show. I’m so proud of it,” Quan says in the short video with sincerity. “It was such a joy to play Ob,” Quan continued. “It makes me so happy to know you all love him as much as I do.

With two episodes left of “Loki” Season 2, the mid-season trailer hints that all is not yet lost after that Episode 4 ending.
Ke Huy Quan’s “O.B.” Ouroboros kicks off the clip by asking Loki how much he knows.
“Let’s assume I didn’t know much, but I’m a fast learner, and I’m a god,” Tom Hiddleston’s titular character replies.
Following the unfortunate death of Kang variant Victor Timely (Jonathan Majors) in Episode 4 and the rest of the time twist crew being engulfed by the exploding time loom, the mid-season trailer makes it look like they can still come back from this.
“All of existence is in grave danger,” Loki says over a montage of his getting engulfed by the time loom’s destruction and spit out at a rental equipment facility in front of a yellow inflatable air dancer. “The Tva is gone.”

If you want to see Ke Huy Quan's life change in real time, keep an eye on his performance in "Loki" season 2. According to producer Kevin Wright, who recently spoke to io9 about the show, Quan was actually cast in the time-twisting Marvel series just as "Everything Everywhere All At Once" was hitting big. According to his timeline, Quan likely filmed the show while his name was being thrown around for award consideration (he would eventually go on to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar). "The buzz was picking up on 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' — that was happening as we were shooting — and then when we were in post-production, he had won an Academy Award," Wright told the outlet, adding, "The timing was crazy."

A new theory explored the possibility that Ke Huy Quan's Ouroboros (Ob) in Loki Season 2 is secretly a villain.
The new addition to Tom Hiddleston's show quickly became a fan-favorite following his introduction in Season 2's premiere. Quan's Ob is a quirky personality who worked in a previously unknown department in the Tva.

Spoilers for the "Loki" season 2 premiere follow.
When news first dropped that Ke Huy Quan was officially joining the MCU in the second season of "Loki" (check out /FIlm's review), longtime fans of the beloved actor could hardly contain themselves. After bursting back through the gates of Hollywood after winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his multi-layered performance in "Everything Everywhere All At Once," the continuation of the Quan-naissance was all but assured.
For a certain generation, Quan will always be immortalized as a certain archeologist's sidekick in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and, perhaps even more revered for his role as the bumbling young inventor Data in Richard Donner's "The Goonies." Along with all the other neighborhood kids from the wrong side of the tracks, Data teamed up with Mikey, Mouth, and Chunk to uncover the pirate treasure hidden by One-Eyed Willie to save their childhood homes.

Academy Award winner Ke Huy Quan joined the cast of Loki in season 2 as Ouroboros, a.k.a. Ob. Ob is the chief (and only) engineer of the Tva’s Repairs and Advancement department, where he’s spent 400 years alone keeping the Tva and its tech up and running. The season premiere, named “Ouroboros,” introduces the quirky character and gives Quan ample opportunity to build a rapport with series leads Owen Wilson and Tom Hiddleston. Ob may be a new character, but thanks to Quan, we already can’t wait to see more of him.

This post contains spoilers for the Season 2 premiere of "Loki."
The last time we caught up with the shenanigans within the Time Variance Authority (Tva) in "Loki," things were not looking so good. Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) encountered He Who Remains in the Citadel at the End of Time, leading to a string of events that threatened to unravel the very fabric of reality. As the end of the first season opened Pandora's box, i.e., the sudden birth of a chaotic multiverse, it is natural for season 2 of "Loki" to dive into complicated rules that demonstrate the repercussions of a world on the precipice of destruction. The season 2 premiere of "Loki" does precisely that, by bringing us up to speed while characters walk and talk frantically — enough to almost rival the longest "walk and talk" scene in "The West Wing."

The story behind Ke Huy Quan's character, Ouroboros (Ob), in Loki Season 2 got some additional details thanks to a Marvel producer.
The new character, who was first revealed to be joining the cast at last year's D23 Expo, finally was introduced to fans in Season 2's premiere episode.
In hopes of fixing Tom Hiddleston's Loki's time-slipping problem, Owen Wilson's Mobius took his friend down to what amounts to a cluttered basement of the Tva where Ob calls home. It's here that Quan's eccentric genius, Ouroboros, works away endlessly, with little to no contact with anyone else in the Tva.

Production on the new season of “Loki” was unusually smooth.
In a new interview with Variety, Kevin Wright, executive producer of the Marvel series, was asked if actor Jonathan Majors’ arrest earlier this year affected season 2.
“I know as much as you do at the moment. It felt hasty to do anything without knowing how all of this plays out”
“No,” he said. “This is maybe — not maybe — this is the first Marvel series to never have any additional photography. The story that is on screen is the story we set out to make. We went out there with a very specific idea of what we wanted this to be, and we found a way to tell it in that production period. It’s very much what’s on screen on Disney+.”

In Doctor Who, the phrase “wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff” has become synonymous with both the nature of time itself — short version: time is a nonlinear mess — and how woefully inadequate our layperson’s vocabulary is when it comes to blathering about time.
Whether you generally understand the intricacies of time and time travel but can’t formally express them, or your head immediately starts to explode the second somebody mentions killing Baby Hitler, it’s simpler to attribute temporal circumstances to “wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff” than pretend you’re Neil deGrasse Tyson.
The handiness of the phrase came to mind more than a few times while I watched the second season of Disney+’s Loki, on which the creative team has absolutely succeeded in using Marvel’s money to make a wildly expensive season of Doctor Who featuring Tom Hiddleston as the Doctor. Of the eight live-action TV shows that Marvel Studios has produced for Disney+ to date, only one has concluded with the explicit promise of a second season: That would be “Loki,” the outrageously entertaining series about Tom Hiddleston’s god of mischief and his metaphysical exploits in the Time Variance Authority.
It turns out, those plans were already in the works before a second of “Loki” had ever streamed. As executive producer Kevin Wright explains to Variety, he and Hiddleston began talking about Season 2 of the show while in production on the third episode of Season 1.
“As we were shooting the ‘Lamentis’ episode, Tom and I started having lots of conversations about how this world could build out, how we dive deeper into it,” he says. “A large part of what we wanted to do was not trying to repeat ourselves, and not try to play the hits.” At the same time,...

The second season of Loki will debut on Disney+ next month, and one of the most exciting additions to the cast is Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once), who plays Time Variance Authority tech expert Ob.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Loki executive producer Kevin Wright shed a little light on Ob. “His job is basically every piece of tech, every computer, every thing that is running at the Tva,” Wright said. “He either designed it, or he fixes it and keeps it running.” Wright also explained how quickly Marvel moved in order to sign Ke Huy Quan for Loki season 2. Marvel casting director Sarah Halley Finn had caught an early screening of Everything Everywhere All at Once and suggested they make Quan an offer as soon as possible. “I think Kevin Feige made a call maybe April 12, just to follow up and say, ‘Please, please do this,...

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” — the fifth film in the long-running action-adventure franchise — had it’s U.S. premiere on Wednesday night in Hollywood.
Star Harrison Ford, who has played the title character for over four decades, greeted his enthusiastic fans, many of whom dressed in Indy’s trademark fedora and leather bomber. While doing red carpet press, Ford was surprised by a very special fan — Ke Huy Quan.
The Oscar winner made in film debut all the way back in 1984’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” as Short Round, Indy’s young sidekick. While Ford was doing an interview on the red carpet, Quan snuck behind him and gave him a warm embrace.
Throughout the Oscar season, Quan credited Ford and “Indiana Jones” director Steven Spielberg for giving him his big break. Also joining Ford at the premiere was his wife, actress Calista Flockhart, and costars Phoebe Waller-Bridge,...

Harrison Ford has found a great resurgence with his acclaimed shows, the Yellowstone prequel series 1923 and Shrinking on AppleTV+. In addition, the legendary star will also join the MCU as he takes over the role of General Thunderbolt Ross in Captain America: Brave New World. But this summer sees Ford donning the fedora one last time as he stars in the swan song for Henry Jones Jr. in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The U.S. premiere of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” included an emotional and joyous reunion between franchise star Harrison Ford and recent “Everything Everywhere All at Once” Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan. The duo starred together in 1984’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” which marked Quan’s movie debut when he was just a child.
A viral video from the “Dial of Destiny” red carpet sees Quan sneaking up behind Ford while the latter is being interviewed by “Extra” host Melvin Robert. Quan places his hand on Ford’s back, and then Ford turns around and smiles when he discovers his former co-star has surprised him.

His profile having risen steadily over the previous ten years with “Orange Is the New Black,” “The Umbrella Academy,” “Carol,” “The Big Short,” “First Cow” and recently “Showing Up,” John Magaro is on the verge of a career break and his very first Oscar nomination for playing an empathic husband forced to navigate a love triangle in Celine Song’s universally praised debut feature, “Past Lives.” Critics have been highlighting him ever since the A24 release premiered to rapturous reviews at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.
“Past Lives” delicately unfolds in the spaces and silences between Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), childhood friends separated by the former’s immigration to America. Decades later, they reconverge in New York City, where Nora resides with her husband, Arthur (Magaro). In recent years, films and television shows have been tasked with the mission of depicting under-represented groups on screen while passing a simple litmus test: Who is this for? For American Born Chinese, it’s immediately apparent that the answer is everyone. The show’s characters speak Mandarin about 30 percent of the time, and signs of Asian-Americana are littered throughout. Yet despite its cultural specificities, this adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s 2006 graphic novel of the same name is an obvious play for Disney’s general audience, what with its comic storyline mixed with fantasy and martial arts.
The series begins with Jin Wang (Ben Wang), a teen struggling to find his social footing, being tasked with showing Chinese transfer student Wei-chen (Jim Liu) around school. A culture clash ensues as Wei-chen, due to his accent and awkwardness, thwarts Jin’s burgeoning popularity. Jin is initially horrified by Wei-chen’s...

Hollywood has had considerable feats of Asian representation this year: “Everything Everywhere All at Once’s” historic Oscar wins, Netflix’s “Beef” and, on May 24, “American Born Chinese.”
However, despite the nuanced portrayal of the Asian American identity within the phantasmagorical world of Chinese mythology, Ke Huy Quan was hesitant about joining the series’ Asian-led ensemble.
“I remember when I first heard about this character when I was offered the role, it scared the hell out of me. In fact, I actually passed on it because I told our creative team that this is the type of portrayal that we do not want to see in 2023,” Quan said during a post-screening Q&a at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday night.
Quan plays Freddy Wong, a gawky fictional character from the ‘90s sitcom “Beyond Repair” who embodies several stereotypical Asian tropes.

Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan was honored with the Gold House Leading Man award at the second annual Gold House Gold Gala on Saturday in Los Angeles.
“When I think of a leading man, I think of someone who is six feet tall with big muscles, good-looking, and a ladies’ man,” the “Everything Everywhere All at Once” star said before cracking, “That practically screams me, right?”
While the gala honored the most impactful Asians on the company’s A100 list, which recognizes the 100 Aapi individuals who impacted American culture and society in the last year, the night remained focused on celebrating Asian visibility and achievements. There was little talk of the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike currently impacting the industry.
As Quan’s “Everything Everywhere All At Once” co-star Stephanie Hsu celebrated her upcoming film “Joy Ride,” she shouted “WGA Strong” when thanking director Adele Lim, writer Teresa Hsiao and Cherry Chevapravatdumrong.

What does it mean to be a hero? In a Disney show or movie, it usually means superpowers or suits or several rings — the external vectors for an inner chivalry that was there all along. It’s the kind of heroism that pops up across Marvel, Star Wars, and numerous other Disney features and series, and which fuels Kelvin Yu’s “American Born Chinese,” based on the graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang.
The series opens with a daunting title card detailing the celestial war afoot: The bull demon (Leonard Wu) wants to destabilize the jade emperor, but the monkey king (Daniel Wu) defends the throne with his magical staff staff jingo bang — which has gone missing. The monkey king pursues the thief in the heavenly realm during the first scene, packed with the lush visuals and deft action that Cretton deployed in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

In much of the same way that his earlier film “Hex” emerges as a bizarre updating of a popular foreign genre film before putting his own spin on things, “Curse of Evil” is director Kuei Chih-hung's updating of the 1953 genre title “The Maze.” Although originally started by director Fung Wong before taking over completely, this over-the-top movie features a roundtable collection of Shaw Brothers stars and contains just enough of Keui's trademark wackiness to be a highly enjoyable genre effort.
Attempting to honor their traditions, the Shi family Madam, (Lang Wai) her granddaughters Yulan, (Tai Liang-chun) and Yumei, (Lily Li) as well as her brother Wang, (Tin Leung), his wife, (Angelina Lo) their kids Jinhua, (Fei Ai) and Mingming, (Lau Nga-lai) alongside head-servant Uncle Quan (Wong Ching-ho) and maid Qiao (Yau Chui-ling) are bewildered at the run of bad luck the family has recently undergone. As the events continue...

Anyone who's seen virtually any footage of Ke Huy Quan — in a role or simply as himself — knows he's a delightfully exuberant ball of energy. The actor's natural charisma is on display in just about every scenario he's in, whether it's on-screen or on the awards circuit, as the last several months have proved.
That energetic positivity isn't a newfound quality, either. Quan possessed that energy from a young age, as is evident by his memorable performances as a kid: Short Round in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and Data in "The Goonies."
As fate would have it, that energy was highly instrumental in helping Quan land those parts in the first place, as the child actor so impressed Steven Spielberg in his initial audition for "Temple of Doom" that it led to two roles, beginning with his turn in the "Indiana Jones" sequel.

Before his Academy Award-winning performance in "Everything Everywhere All at Once," Ke Huy Quan had found himself in a 20-year acting hiatus. The Vietnam-born, Chinese-American actor is best known for starring as Short Round in 1984's "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" at just 12 years old and for playing Data in 1985's "The Goonies." As Quan grew up, he took on roles in international productions; however, the opportunities for Asian talent in Hollywood specifically continued to get slimmer.
In 2002, Quan left acting behind — but despite popular belief, he never once gave up on his passion for filmmaking and storytelling for a second. In fact, Quan would find himself trying out a variety of roles behind the camera. After graduating from USC, Quan was briefly mentored by action choreographer and director Corey Yuen, and even helped choreograph a significant fight sequence in the original "X-Men" film. Talk about intense!
On Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 3 Episode 17, Stabler had no choice but to work with a hotheaded father desperate to get his son back. Every mistake Wen made could have derailed the operation and gotten himself and others killed.
It all worked out in the end -- but it was almost too easy.
Stabler's efforts to get Wen to follow directions were ironic. How many times has Bell complained about Stabler going rogue?
He got a taste of his own medicine while dealing with Wen, who consistently did the opposite of what Stabler told him and forced the cops to reveal themselves earlier than they wanted during every step of the operation.

Unsurprisingly, he and Stabler bonded over their desire to protect their children. Stabler is all about family, so he was the...
