Back in 1986, David Cronenberg directed a remake of Kurt Neumann’s 1958 sci-fi horror classic The Fly (which was based on George Langelaan’s short story) – and the result is considered to be one of the best remakes of all time. 20th Century Fox (now the Disney subsidiary 20th Century Studios) has been wanting to replicate that success with another remake for a couple decades now… but the project has never managed to escape from development hell. Cronenberg wanted to come back and make another Fly movie, but it fell apart over budgetary issues. Screenwriter Todd Lincoln wrote a remake of The Fly that he described as a “dark, twisted, grounded re- imagining… Part Val-Lewton, part J.G. Ballard, part Neal Stephenson with, some Horror Manga touches.” The studio wasn’t into it. J.D. Dillard was attached to direct a new version of The Fly for years, but recently stepped away from it.

White House historians have compiled plenty of interesting facts about the first ladies of the United States, such as the fact that no portrait of Martha Jefferson is known to exist and Mary Todd Lincoln was the first woman to hold seances in the White House. But Jenna Bush Hager, granddaughter of former Flotus Barbara Bush, might have revealed the strangest factoid yet. On the “Today” show on Monday morning, Bush Hager was discussing going barefoot in the house with co-host Kathie Lee Gifford when she revealed that her grandmother is “missing a toe on each foot,” something that she.

With the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963, America’s most iconic First Lady became America’s Greatest Widow. Jacqueline Kennedy was left in a state of shock, anguish and grief, and yet she also seems to have an intuited an important truth: The wave of suffering that threatened to overwhelm her (and the nation) counted for little against the longer obliterating tides of time and history.
It was her duty not only to mourn publicly, and properly, but to shore up the legacy of her husband’s never-to-be-completed first term.

In what has to be the worst complaint since Mary Todd Lincoln said she didn't like the play, MSNBC's Chuck Todd went on an extended lament during Tuesday night's presidential primary coverage over the fact that presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and recent Democratic nomination clincher Hillary Clinton didn't congratulate each other. It was, in all fairness, a deeply-reported lament, and also in all fairness, not one of the crack coverage team stared at him like "I will slap the taste out of your mouth."...

Sally Field was the big guest on Monday's episode of The Howard Stern Show, where the two-time Oscar winner offered up candid insights on her 50-plus years in showbusiness. From Smokey and the Bandit to Spider-Man to The Flying Nun, Field was game for the grilling. Here are five major highlights from today's chat. 1. She's not a big fan of her role in the divisive Amazing Spider-Man movies. While Field enjoyed one of the biggest box-office hits of her career with the first Amazing Spider-Man, she did the film not out of love for the material but to work with late producer and friend Laura Ziskin one last time (Ziskin died of breast cancer before the movie was released). Howard: "You didn't like that movie?" Field: "Not especially. It's not my kind of movie. But my friend Laura Ziskin was the producer, and we knew it would be her last film,...

M'lynn. Gidget. Norma Rae. The Flying Nun. Sybil. Edna Spalding. Mary Todd Lincoln. Mrs Gump. We know her by many names but the one we'll always love best is "Sally Field," perfectly stage-name appropriate for instant recall and audience adoration... and also her real name since birth.
Though she's been famous for literally half a century (!) she hasn't always been properly appreciated... a common fate for stars whose work looks effortless and who excel in "light" genres like dramedies and romantic comedies. But we like her. We really really like her. Don't you?
Her biggest hits: Forrest Gump, Mrs Doubtfire, Hooper, Lincoln, Steel Magnolias, and literally every film she made with Burt Reynolds from 1977-1980 -- audiences couldn't get enough of them together back then. Most frequent co-stars: Burt Reynolds (4), Jeff Bridges, Michael Caine, Dom de Luise, Tom Hanks, Ed Harris, and Tommy Lee Jones (2). Awards haul: 3 Emmys, 2 Oscars, 1 SAG,...

The 1860s are a familiar period for Donna Murphy. In addition to winning Tonys for playing Fosca in the original Broadway production of Passion and Anna in the 1996 revival of The King And I, the actress played Mary Todd Lincoln in the television movie, The Day Lincoln Was Shot. All three projects were set between 1862 and 1867. And, while she jokes that the 1998 film was the last time that she had worn a corset, when she read the pilot episode of PBS's Civil War medical drama Mercy Street, premiering tonight at 1000pm Et, she knew that she wanted to be involved.

Earlier this month, Stewart also received the best supporting actress award from the New York Film Critics Circle and from the Boston Society of Film Critics and the Boston Online Film Critics. "Do you guys know Doris? She's kinda weird." The trailer has debuted for a quirky, cute, charming indie drama called Hello, My Name Is Doris starring Sally Field. After a quiet few years in her career, Field has roared back recently playing Aunt May in The Amazing Spider-Man, not to mention Mary Todd Lincoln in Lincoln. The entire cast includes Natasha Lyonne, Kumail Nanjiani, Peter Gallagher, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Tyne Daly and Beth Behrs. Cult horror comic Hack/Slash has spent years in development as a movie, but now THR is reporting that it’s being set up as a series at Relativity Television.
Over the years, the project has courted directors such as Marcus Nispel, Fredrik Bond and Todd Lincoln, with Justin Marks and Stephen Susco among the writers that took a crack at the script. Now, the series will be produced by Adrian Askarieh and Ray Ricord, with Skip Woods (Swordfish, A Good Day to Die Hard, the Hitman movies) on writing duties. Apparently the “goal to make it a dark and gritty show in The Walking Dead mold.”
For the uninitiated, THR has also provided a synopsis:

Skip Woods ("Swordfish," "A Good Day to Die Hard," "Hitman") has been hired to pen the script for a dark and gritty TV series adaptation of the cult comic "Hack/Slash".
The story centers on Cassie Hack, a young woman who has become a killer of killers and travels to small towns across the country hunting hunting homicidal maniacs and serial killers in the vein of horror icons like Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers.
She is partnered on her journey with Vlad, a hulking companion who serves as her protector. The property has spent many years in development as a film with the likes of Marcus Nispel, Fredrik Bond and Todd Lincoln attached as directors at some point. And we’re back for episode two! This week’s host is Amy Schumer, a solid choice that should lead to an interesting show. Inside Amy Schumer just beat SNL for the “Outstanding Variety Sketch Series” Emmy, indicating that perhaps Comedy Central’s more cinematic sketch shows are beginning to take over a spot in American comedy long held primarily by SNL. It’ll be interesting to see how Schumer’s typically more polished comedy mixes with the loveably spotty “let’s put on a show” variety at Saturday Night Live. I’m hoping for the best on this one; Schumer is an incredibly game performer, and it’s always nice to have a host that can bring sketch ideas to the table in addition to performing. Let’s dig in! When fans of the V/H/S horror anthology franchise picked up the recently released Blu-ray of the third and latest installment, 2014’s V/H/S: Viral, they may have stumbled on something special after the credits had rolled: an all new segment called “Gorgeous Vortex” from writer/director Todd Lincoln (The Apparition). A beautifully shot, dialogue-free collage of nightmare images not included in the theatrical cut of the movie, “Gorgeous Vortex” is now available exclusively on the Blu-ray and DVD of V/H/S: Viral.
Daily Dead recently spoke with Lincoln about “Gorgeous Vortex” and his participation in the horror anthology.
Could you give a little background as to how you came to be involved with the third V/H/S film?
Todd Lincoln: It’s funny how I got involved. One of the V/H/S producers approached me while I was devouring cookies in the Topanga Canyon mall.

Read More: Sally Field Delivers a Winning Performance in 'Hello, My Name is Doris' In the two days since "Hello, My Dame is Doris," the new comedy from "Wet Hot American Summer" co-writer Michael Showalter, premiered at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival, folks in Austin have been talking non-stop about Sally Field's standout performance in the film. The project marks a rare opportunity to see the two-time Oscar winner give her all to a lead role. She recently anchored ABC's critically acclaimed series "Brother & Sisters" for five years on the small screen, but on the big screen, Field has been relegated to supporting roles over the past decade, stealing scenes as Aunt May in "The Amazing Spider-Man" reboot and its sequel, and earning an Oscar nomination for her bravura performance as Mary Todd Lincoln in Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln." Teresa Wright and Matt Damon in 'The Rainmaker' Teresa Wright: From Marlon Brando to Matt Damon (See preceding post: "Teresa Wright vs. Samuel Goldwyn: Nasty Falling Out.") "I'd rather have luck than brains!" Teresa Wright was quoted as saying in the early 1950s. That's understandable, considering her post-Samuel Goldwyn choice of movie roles, some of which may have seemed promising on paper.[1] Wright was Marlon Brando's first Hollywood leading lady, but that didn't help her to bounce back following the very public spat with her former boss. After all, The Men was released before Elia Kazan's film version of A Streetcar Named Desire turned Brando into a major international star. Chances are that good film offers were scarce. After Wright's brief 1950 comeback, for the third time in less than a decade she would be gone from the big screen for more than a year.

Think you've seen "V/H/S: Viral"? Not all of it, as it turns out. Titled "Gorgeous Vortex," the visually-dazzling short was inspired by "avante-garde video artists, fashion photography, old Italian Horror movies, George Lucas’s early experimental films, and the writings of J.G. Lincoln spoke with HitFix recently about the film, which journeys into a cryptic, sensual world of murder, the occult and, yes, fashion models. Curious? Good day, horror fans. I trust that most people reading this story were curled up with a fabulous scary movie (or The Walking Dead, more likely) rather than tuning into the Oscars, a ceremony where horror has been almost completely sidelined for the last 87 years. The series' most challenging aspect remains its wrap-around segments, which serve to loosely link the stories together. For an anthology, one would assume that these would be among the strongest in the film; sadly, that's not the case. "Vicious Circles" features...

'V/H/S: Viral' arrives in theatres tomorrow for those who've not yet caught it on VOD and hot on its heels is this latest alternative look poster for the anthology threequel. It's been kicking around On Demand for a little while now and this new poster arrives based around the Marcel Sarmiento helmed wrap-around segment entitled 'Vicious Circles'. It comes courtesy of Magnet Releasing who'll be unleashing the third installment in the franchise into Us theatres this Friday. Filmmakers Todd Lincoln ('The Apparition'), Nacho Vigalondo ('Open Windows'), Gregg Bishop ('The Other Side'), Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead ('Resolution') are also on board with their efforts....

When people watch V/H/S: Viral, there will undoubtably be some who question the short runtime, while there will be others scoffing at the Go-Pro cameras, iPhone videos, and other technologically advanced recorders that have nothing to do with VHS tapes, which is understandable. To provide a little backstory, Todd Lincoln (The Apparition) was supposed to have a segment in this third installment, but either the short was subsequently cut after a few test screenings or he submitted an unfinished product – whoever you choose to listen to – which doesn’t surprise me in the lest after sitting through The Apparition. And to the haters who will never silence their gripes about authenticity and VHS quality, throwing their hands in the air at the first signs of crisp quality and crystal-clear focusing? Eh, we’ll never stop the haters from hating, and it’s their loss because V/H/S:...

The third entry in the found footage franchise is available just in time for Halloween and features segments from Nacho Vigalondo, Marcel Sarmiento, Gregg Bishop, Justin Benson, Todd Lincoln, and Aaron Moorhead. Here’s a look at two clips from V/H/S: Viral:
“A police chase after a deranged ice cream truck has captivated the attention of the greater Los Angeles area. Dozens of fame-obsessed teens flock to the streets with their video cameras and camera phones, hell-bent on capturing the next viral video. But there is something far more sinister occurring in the streets of L.A. than a simple police chase. A resounding effect is created onto all those obsessed with capturing salacious footage for no other purpose than to amuse or titillate. Soon the discovery becomes that they themselves are the stars of the next video, one where they face their own death.

When the first film in this series was released 2 years ago, it came as a much-needed breath of fresh air for the found-footage subgenre, a subgenre that had tired itself out by the time even Paranormal Activity 2 came out. What stood out the most about it was that none of the filmmakers involved were trying to fool you into thinking that any of it was real, while studio made found footage films still marketed themselves as “this is real footage”. Rather than try to pull a trick you wouldn’t fall for, they just had fun with the format and sought to break down the limitations of it. V/H/S 2 doubled down on...

When I reviewed the first entry in the V/H/S series, I didn't have a whole lot of nice things to say. Too long and too dumb, it felt like what you'd get if you gave cameras and a shoddy script to a bunch of smash-happy frat boys. V/H/S 2 (review) was a marked improvement, and featured segments from Gareth Evans and Timo Tjahjanto, Jason Eisener, and Gregg Hale and Eduardo Sanchez that suggested this anthology might actually be headed somewhere. V/H/S Viral, comprised of three shorts and a wraparound (a fourth short by Todd Lincoln has been excised from early screenings, and I'm not sure if or when it'll end up in a later version), is the third and latest in the series, an [Continued ...]...

“V/H/S Viral” brings the popular found-footage horror franchise into the modern era, while staying true to the anthology format established in the original films. The third installment features shorts written and directed by Justin Benson, Gregg Bishop, Todd Lincoln, Marcel Sarmiento and Nacho Vigalondo. Previous films have featured a framing story featuring one or more characters watching VHS tapes. It was on these tapes that the short horror films played out, while a different frightening fate awaited the watcher. See video: New ‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ Trailer Is Just a Little Bit Odd The latest installment takes the concept online where there.
