The works of director Gabriele Muccino aren’t for everyone. I can’t speak on his Italian films, but the American ones are unavoidably cloying and sentimental in a way that must be accepted or ignored to find resonance. Despite being the one showered with praise, The Pursuit of Happyness didn’t quite do enough for me. I appreciated the story and performances, but felt the artifice. For Seven Pounds, however, I didn’t care. The entire film proved one giant manipulative contrivance yet it unexpectedly hit me with depth and power just the same. So when the opportunity to watch his latest Fathers and Daughters arrived, I was optimistic. It looked ripe for that same emotional catharsis and as such possessed the potential to also crash and burn magnificently.

In the new drama "Fathers and Daughters," Russell Crowe plays Jake Davis a literary giant who published a widely-acclaimed novel about his relationship with his own daughter Katie (Kylie Rodgers). Though he loves her very much, Jake is suffering a mental breakdown and thus isn't equipped to take care of his daughter, so he leaves her in the charge of others. Now, 27 years later, an older Katie (Amanda Seyfried) struggles to connect with others, but with the help of a kind stranger (Aaron Paul), maybe she can learn to love yet again. It’s all rather implausible and hugely melodramatic as it milks ham-fisted histrionics from high soap opera. A pitiable excuse for a movie. I’m “biast” (pro): really like Russell Crowe…
I’m “biast” (con): …though he’s been trying my patience lately
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
In 1989 New York (or, well, Pittsburgh standing in, unconvincingly, for New York), Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jake Davis (Russell Crowe: The Water Diviner, Noah) and his young daughter (Kylie Rogers) stumble through their grief over losing his wife, her mother in a car accident. The crash has left Jake with a combination of manic depression, palsy, and seizures brought on, apparently, by guilt (he was driving and distracted) and brain injury. It’s rather implausible and hugely melodramatic, which is all this pitiable excuse for a movie is concerned with: milking ham-fisted histrionics from high soap opera.

Italian filmmaker Gabriele Muccino may not be a household name in Hollywood, but his two most prominent western films – Seven Pounds and The Pursuit of Happyness – have underlined the director’s ability to capture raw, profoundly human emotions on camera. Now, Muccino is back with a star-studded cast for Fathers and Daughters, which has today debuted its heart-wrenching international trailer.
Starring Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried and Aaron Paul, Fathers and Daughters is a tragic tale about one family ripped apart by a car crash. It’s Crowe’s Pulitzer-winning novelist who shoulders the most pain, though, blaming himself for the loss of his wife. Left to raise a 5-year-old daughter on his lonesome, the narrative will jump between Katie’s troubled childhood and the present day, where she will be portrayed by Seyfried.
While the first look doesn’t appear to be too remarkable, Fathers and Daughters earns the benefit...

Watch: First Trailer For 'Fathers And Daughters' With Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, And Aaron Paul
After having a brief bromance with Will Smith, working with the actor on "The Pursuit Of Happyness" and "Seven Pounds," Italian filmmaker Gabriele Muccino hasn't quite hit the same heights since in Hollywood. His last effort was the Gerard Butler effort "Playing For Keeps" and now comes "Fathers And Daughters" which has some decent names attached, but as this first international trailer reveals, maybe not the most promising results. Starring Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, and Aaron Paul, with a Black List approved script by Brad Desch, this is time-jumping tale about the relationship between a widower novelist and his daughter, with the story told through her eyes, in a narrative that spans decades. Here's the official synopsis: Jake Davis, a Pulitzer-winning novelist, finds himself fighting against the world when a fatal car accident leaves him to raise his 5-year-old daughter, Katie, all on his own. Deadline is reporting that Haley Bennett will be joining Gabriele Muccino’s Fathers and Daughters, which already stars a pretty impressive cast that consists of Russell Crowe, Aaron Paul, Amanda Seyfried, Octavia Spencer, Quvenzhane Wallis and Diane Kruger.
Scripted by Brad Desch, the film details “the bond between a father and daughter living in New York.” The story will move between the 1980s and present day as it follows Jake Davis (Crowe), a famous writer and widower who “struggles with mental illness” as he tries to raise his 5-year-old daughter Katie.
Growing up with a troubled childhood, Katie (Amanda Seyfried) eventually has demons of her own that she has to deal with when she’s older and that’s what the present day portion of the story focuses on.
Having loved Muccino’s The Pursuit of Happyness, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what he can do with Fathers and Daughters.

A music video in companion to Drake's single "Successful" has made its debut with one of the featured guests in the track, Trey Songz, making a cameo. The other musician, Lil Wayne, who also lends his vocal to the song doesn't appear in this video though.
The video is directed by Jake Davis and was shot in Toronto, Canada. It features new verses from Trey in a bid to replace the missing lyrics from Weezy. Commenting on the scenes he and Trey filmed, Drake told MTV, "It was so eerie. Like it was haunting, almost. I was like, 'Yo, that's it. You need to use that.' He started playing this patch, and just every note that he played fell into place."

An almost-2-minute snippet of Drake's "Successful" music video has been outed. It shows similar scenes previewed in the previous sneak peek. The difference is that this clip sees footage of his collaborator Trey Songz lingering on a bed with a woman.
"It was so eerie. Like it was haunting, almost," Drake told MTV about the scenes he and Trey filmed. "I was like, 'Yo, that's it. You need to use that.' He started playing this patch, and just every note that he played fell into place."
Trey agreed with Drake's opinion saying, "It was simplistic, but it knocks. It's eerie, it's dark. The first thing I laid down was the gothic, reverb-driven harmony: 'arrrgh, arrrgh, arrrgh.' I couldn't think of what I wanted to hear on it, so I did a whole bunch of harmonies [until I found the right one]."
The video was directed by Jake Davis and shot in Toronto, Canada earlier this month.

A short clip from Drake's music video for his single "Successful" has been put out in a bid to provide fans with a sneak peek. The snippet sees Drake and his collaborator Trey Songz performing the song in a balcony with city view at night being featured on the background.
"It was so eerie. Like it was haunting, almost," Drake told MTV about the scenes he filmed. "I was like, 'Yo, that's it. You need to use that.' He started playing this patch, and just every note that he played fell into place."
Trey agrees with Drake's opinion saying, "It was simplistic, but it knocks. It's eerie, it's dark. The first thing I laid down was the gothic, reverb-driven harmony: 'arrrgh, arrrgh, arrrgh.' I couldn't think of what I wanted to hear on it, so I did a whole bunch of harmonies [until I found the right one]."

It's not exactly a do-over, but after receiving some negative comments from fans about his "Best I Ever Had" video, Drake tones things down in a clip for "Successful," a collaboration with Trey Songz.
The video was shot in the rapper's hometown of Toronto. Drake and Songz share top billing throughout the clip, directed by Jake Davis. Lil Wayne is featured in the original version of the song from Drake's mixtape So Far Gone, but in the video version, Weezy's verse has been replaced with a sung verse from Songz.
The clip is dark and opens with Drake overlooking the city. He continues to peer out from the balcony of a building during his first verse until he meets with Trey. As the two exit the condo, Drake turns back to the doorman,...
