When you go back and take a look at the movies that were released in 2006, you might think we were all high. I mean some of us were but regardless, everything was so over the top. Eli Roth’s Hostel was tearing off tourists’ clothes while slashing their Achilles’, The Hills Have Eyes remake was gnarly in every way and does anybody remember that really cool but super weird Paul Walker flick Running Scared? We were on some dark stuff back in the mid-2000s. It wasn’t just the horror and action genres, either. Comedies like Grandma’s Boy had a level of wildness to them that you don’t see these days.

As part of Variety’s 100 Greatest Shows of All Time issue, we asked writers on our staff to name their favorite cult shows — series that may lack the clout, the following, or the prestige to quite notch an entry on our list, but ones for which our writers have a special fondness. Here are seven shows that are, to us, the greatest.
Alias
So the central mythology, about the mystical inventor Milo Rambaldi, came to little as the show went on. No big deal. On “Alias,” it was all about the ride. That’s meant very literally: Each week, the show crash-landed into an episode-ending cliffhanger. As played by a luminous, game, and utterly committed Jennifer Garner, superspy double agent Sydney Bristow changed her loyalties, her allies, and her wigs. The only constant in her life was chaos, into which a writing team led by J.J. Abrams thrust her week after week.

Halloween has arrived, and celebrities have gone all out to dress up as other pop cultural icons. The SAG-AFTRA guidelines for Halloween this year advised members to not post photos of costumes inspired by struck work on social media, to choose costumes inspired by generalized Halloween tropes or to dress up as characters from non-struck content like cartoons or other animated TV shows.
“SAG-AFTRA issued Halloween guidance in response to questions from content creators and members about how to support the strike during this festive season. This was meant to help them avoid promoting struck work, and it is the latest in a series of guidelines we have issued,” the guild said in a statement.
But not all actors complied.

Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and other music stars served as major sources of inspiration behind the Halloween costumes displayed on morning and daytime talk shows this year.
Three shows featured hosts dressing up as Swift, with Today‘s Savannah Guthrie, Live‘s Kelly Ripa and The Talk‘s Amanda Kloots all dressing as the superstar singer-songwriter, with the latter two also passing out friendship bracelets in an ode to Swift’s hit Eras tour.
Live With Kelly and Mark took the Swift inspiration one step further, dubbing their annual Halloween extravaganza The Eras Show as they looked back through different decades of pop culture and of Live‘s own onscreen Halloween celebrations. While Ripa and Consuelos kicked things off with their take on the Barbie movie, they doled out friendship bracelets in an homage to Swift and spoke about the Eras tour inspiration for their show.

If you fancy getting your hands on Bob Ross‘ first-ever TV painting, you’re in luck. Well, that’s if you have a cool $9.8 million to spare. “A Walk in the Woods,” the oil painting that Ross created in 1983 on the first episode of his iconic art program The Joy of Painting, is currently listed on the Modern Artifact website for $9.85 million by gallery owner Ryan Nelson. “What this piece represents is the people’s artist,” Nelson told ABC News. “This isn’t an institution that’s telling you that Bob Ross is great. It’s not some high-brow gallery telling you that Bob Ross is great. This is the masses, the population in the world, that are saying that Bob Ross is great.” Ross, who passed away in 1995, hosted The Joy of Painting on PBS from 1983 to 1994. He became hugely popular from his easy-to-follow instructional videos and his iconic permed hair.

Gizmo. Predator. Slimer. Dustin from “Stranger Things.” These are just a few popular characters that have been turned into official Chia Pets in recent years, and more are coming soon.
This Halloween season, Neca will be turning Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday Addams from Netflix series “Wednesday” and Ghostface from Scream into Chia Pets!
The handmade decorative planters promise full growth in 1-2 weeks, with the “Wednesday” Chia Pet depicting Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday Addams looking down at a spooky black and green plant. The Ghostface planter is particularly interesting, as the plant you grow atop his head is intended to form his iconic black hood – it looks more like a Bob Ross hairdo, however.
Thing from the “Wednesday” series gets his own Chia Pet as well, seen below.

Jimmy Page needed time to find the desire to join a band after Led Zeppelin folded. Drummer John Bonham’s tragic death in 1980 brought a sudden end to the band Page formed in 1968 and guided to worldwide success in the 1970s. The Firm, featuring Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers, was that band. He was the unquestioned boss in Led Zeppelin, but Rodgers told Page to take a back seat on The Firm song “Radioactive.”

Oscilloscope Laboratories’ Cannes Jury Prize Winner and Independent Spirit international film winner Joyland led New York’s Film Forum to one of its biggest opening weekends for a foreign language film in nearly a decade, taking in north of $21k on one screen, the distributor said. Owen Wilson is back, with brushes, as the longtime host of a beloved but fading Burlington, Vermont-based PBS instructional art show. Paint from IFC Films opens Friday on 800-plus screens.
Public television is always ripe for parody and happens to be a world Wilson knows. His father Robert Wilson helped launch, and ran, Dallas PBS station Kera. (He also introduced Monty Python’s Flying Circus to public television.)
Paint director Brit McAdams tells Deadline said that his own after-school TV ritual, General Hospital, would often segue into PBS host Bob Ross’ The Joy of Painting. Ross is a loose inspiration for Wilson’s character, Carl Nargle, in the look at least, from permed hair, denim-on-denim wardrobe and dulcet tones that impressed McAdams and a global fan base.

The inspiration for Owen Wilson’s character in his new movie, Paint, is pretty on the nose (no Owen Wilson pun intended). The real-life artist figure Bob Ross, who had a popular art show on PBS in the 70s, had gained a newer pop culture status in recent years after fans reminisced about his unshakably calm and happy demeanor while showcasing his effortless talent at making amazing landscape paintings. What is equally iconic is his retro fashion that, even though it’s a look that never progressed beyond the 70s, has now become just as synonymous with this fascinating man.
In Entertainment Weekly, Wilson talks about taking up the Bob Ross persona. He actually has personal connections to the painter as his father was a TV executive who worked at a PBS station in his native city of Dallas in the 70s. “I remember, as a kid, my mom taking...

Channel-surfing may be a nostalgic pastime these days, but those who experienced the mindless boredom of finding “nothing on TV” will probably recall the most compellingly boring show ever: “The Joy of Painting” with Bob Ross. With his signature curly brown afro and soothing voice, Ross was a fixture on PBS and of many a rainy afternoon. Though new episodes stopped airing in 1994, the late painter reached sustained notoriety through international reruns, Twitch streams, a Netflix deal, and a YouTube channel. In 2021, Netflix released a documentary about his life, “Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed.”
A new fictional film plays on Ross’ pop culture icon status without using his name or any particular details of his life, instead trading on his distinctive look and the public television painting show setting. It’s a busy April this year. One less Friday than last month, but the exact same number of posters to sift through. Yes, having films release the Wednesday before Easter helps add to the total, but only two titles are taking advantage: Air (April 5) and The Super Mario Bros. Movie (April 5). And with only one other wide release following them a couple days later, the numbers even out anyway.

Let’s be clear about one thing: Owen Wilson is not playing Bob Ross. He’s just a guy named Carl Nargle, who hosts a popular PBS painting show called Paint with Carl Nargle, filmed in a small American town — Burlington, Vt., not Muncie, In. — that has made him a celebrity. The fact that he has a luscious perm, just like the Joy of Painting creator? Totally a coincidence. And that his program is little more than him instructing viewers how to paint pictureseque landscapes of tranquil lakes and friendly trees,...

Thank God for Owen Wilson. Without the star’s laconic, laid-back comedic approach to character, his new film Paint would be strictly a by-the-numbers comedy affair. Even with Wilson offering his all as Carl Nargle, a local Public Television star in Burlington, Vermont, whose time in the spotlight he has always held is fading quickly, Paint seems like a missed opportunity.
Fortunately writer-director Brit McAdams has Wilson to hold it together with a sterling, mostly female supporting cast delivering the goods as well. It’s not enough, though, in a largely witless indie enterprise shot in 20 days during the pandemic.
Nargle is inspired by PBS star Bob Ross, with full-on mop of permed hair and signature pipe, who held forth with his modest show in which in made instant art by painting landscapes and inviting the television audience to paint along with him as he offered soft, Mister Rogers-style advice.

Plot: Carl Nargle, Vermont’s #1 public television painter is convinced he has it all: a signature perm, custom van, and fans hanging on his every stroke… until a younger, better artist steals everything (and everyone) Carl loves.
Review: When the first photos of Owen Wilson as Carl Nargle hit the internet, I knew that Paint was a movie I needed to see. The trailer made the movie out to be a quirky comedy in the vein of Wes Anderson’s films, and the finished product is not far off of that mark. With a sweet demeanor and a solid cast of comedic actors, Paint is very much like the art the main characters create in the film: nice but also very generic. There is nothing inherently wrong with Britt McAdams’s film. Still, it never embraces the oddity of the subject matter enough to make it stand out from the...

Everybody loves Bob Ross. For more than 10 years, the soft-spoken, big-haired artists came into people's homes via PBS and taught "The Joy of Painting." The paintings Ross created were not exactly awe-inspiring, but they were pretty enough. However, it was Ross' built-in Asmr skills that truly entranced viewers — we couldn't get enough of his whispery voice talking about "happy little trees." So great was Ross' power that his legend lives on long after his death — people still flock to YouTube to watch low-def videos of his old shows.
But what if Bob Ross was a cynical, washed-up womanizer? Would you like to see a movie about that? The makers of "Paint" sure hope so! Written and directed by Brit McAdams, "Paint" provides us with a portrait of Carl Nargle (Owen Wilson), a Bob Ross clone who is much loved as the host of Vermont's number-one painting show. What could the future possibly hold for an artist if they have grown too comfortable with success? If they have stayed put in that snug place of glory, but the times have moved on fast without them? These are the hefty considerations at the heart of “Paint,” a slight comedy that sadly embraces neither the worthwhile questions that surround its central premise nor the story’s dark humor potential.
That’s too bad, because writer-director Brit McAdams’ narrative feature debut is rooted in a genuinely fascinating subject that apparently served as an inspiration for “Paint.” McAdam’s muse is Bob Ross, a real-life American public television mainstay of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Being the host of a successful PBS show called “The Joy of Painting” during that time, Ross built a loyal audience who loved and were mesmerized by his soothing voice, and even haunted by his creative process and ease with a brush,...

Carl Nargle (Owen Wilson), the amusingly ironic hero of “Paint”, hosts a one-man instructional painting show that gets broadcast live out of the PBS station in Burlington, Vermont. Each afternoon, Carl appears on camera for one hour, puffing on his pipe, holding his brushes and palette as he dashes off an oil painting of a local wilderness setting, explaining all the while, in the unruffled monotone of a stoned hypnotist, how you too can get to a “special place” just by painting what’s in your heart.
Carl himself seems nearly as much of an art object as his canvases of Mt. Mansfield, the Vermont peak he has begun to paint with Ocd frequency. He wears the same denim Western shirts, fuzzy beard and ash-blond Afro that he’s been sporting since 1979. He’s a relic: the landscape painter as Fred Rogers for adults, a kind of soft-rock guru from...

What if genial TV painter Bob Ross was actually a serial philanderer with an obsessive need to be accepted by the art community? This seems, on paper, like an interesting concept for a film. Considering that Ross has enjoyed a revitalization during the pandemic, perhaps now is the time to interrogate his life and legacy. However, despite sporting a pretty wonderful wig and reenacting his mannerisms, Carl Nargle (Owen Wilson) is not Ross, and Brit McAdams’ feature debut “Paint” is not a biopic of everyone’s favorite former PBS employee.

If you’ve seen promos for Paint, you’ve probably figured out that Brit McAdams’ comedy starring Owen Wilson is inspired by Bob Ross, the artist who hosted the low-fi PBS series The Joy of Painting for many years before succumbing to lymphoma at age 52 in 1995. Creating landscape paintings in under 30 minutes, Ross was an unwitting progenitor of Asmr, with his endlessly laid-back demeanor, his soft speaking style and his soothing manner that exuded a sort of hypnotic calm. He was also a distinctive visual presence with his impossibly large permed hair, thick beard and mustache, invariably dressed in jeans and a light-colored shirt.
As Carl Nagle, who hosts a Vermont public television show about painting, Wilson channels Ross’ distinctive persona not only visually but also spiritually. The casting feels dead-on, since Wilson has made a career specialty of playing laid-back, slightly dazed characters who seem stoned out of their minds even while perfectly sober.

Metallica have shared videos of James Hetfield unboxing the band’s upcoming album 72 Seasons on vinyl, CD, and cassette. The track lengths, as printed on the CD, were also revealed.
The first clip was posted to Twitter with the following caption: “Would ya look at that. It seems a box of vinyl fell off the back of a truck & somehow found its way to HQ and into the tattooed hands of James Hetfield!”
We see Hetfield comfortably seated at the kitchen table with a pocketknife. In the first video, he calmly slices open the shrinkwrap on the double-lp vinyl edition of 72 Seasons to showcase the record’s elaborate packaging.
The gatefold sleeve has inner diecuts of “7” on the left side and “2” on the right; and the inner sleeves housing the wax feature moody, black-and-white portraits of each band member. Unfortunately there is no commentary in the video from James himself...

The past decade has seen a lot of weird cultural trends, but few were harder to predict than the unlikely reemergence of Bob Ross.
The painter, who hosted the instructional art show “The Joy of Painting” on PBS from 1983 until his death in 1994, doesn’t exactly seem like the kind of celebrity who would find an audience in today’s fast-paced world. Each episode of his show featured him leisurely painting a picture while offering words of encouragement to his viewers. It was soothing background noise at the time, but aspiring artists can now find much more efficient videos on YouTube and MasterClass.
Yet the Internet — which in theory should have been the invention that erased Ross’ legacy — ended up being the very thing that made him relevant again. The 2010s were the decade of the Bob Ross vibe shift, with nostalgic memes turning the unapologetically sincere painter into a...

Let’s just add a happy little actor over here and maybe a touch of afro up there on the head…In his latest movie, Paint, Owen Wilson plays Carl Nargle, a character directly influenced by Bob Ross, who hosted The Joy of Painting from 1985-1994. To get into character, Wilson zeroed in on what made Ross so special in the world of public television.
Bob Ross’ distinct look of afro and beard was something that Owen Wilson and the Paint team had to nail. And in it, Wilson wears a wig that helped him channel the beloved painter and will make audiences go Wooowwww. “I did like a little painting before to just see what it felt like. But one of the big things for me came when they got the look dialed in with the wardrobe. And, I mean, let’s be honest, the wig does a lot...

Owen Wilson once received the best gift any Rolling Stones fan could ever wish for — an all-access backstage pass that was his to keep forever. But, after just one night of using the VIP laminate, things quickly went south and his pass was revoked.
Wilson recalled what went down while appearing on “The Late Late Show” earlier this week.
“I went to see the Rolling Stones in Argentina,” the actor, 54, told host James Corden and fellow guest Jeff Goldblum, “and I was kinda friendly with some of the band, and my friend was really good friends with Mick Jagger. And we got these special laminates, kind of all-access, that were good for the rest of your life…”

Owen Wilson was once honored with an all-access pass to attend any Rolling Stones show — a full circle moment, since he saw the legends perform at his first ever concert in 1980. Unfortunately, as he told James Corden and Jeff Goldblum on The Late Late Show, his Stones privileges were revoked a day later when he accidentally wandered on stage during the band’s set.
“I went to see the Rolling Stones in Argentina,” Wilson recalled, “and I was kinda friendly with some of the band, and my friend was really good friends with Mick Jagger. And we got these special laminates, kind of all-access, that were good for the rest of your life, that we got presented with.”

Owen Wilson did not set out to emulate Bob Ross in 'Paint'.The 54-year-old actor stars in the comedy film as an artist called Carl Nargle but did not plan to match the late painter's serene style, even though he does sport 'The Joy of Painting' host's afro hairstyle in the movie.Owen told Variety: "I'm not good at doing imitations, and so that was never really a possibility. But certainly that quality that he had when you watched the show – and why people still do – is like a little spa treatment or something. You come out like, 'Oh, I feel relaxed and I feel better.'"Wilson's character is the presenter of Vermont's most popular painting show until he is usurped by a younger, better artist and the star got to enjoy flipping the script on the tranquil image of art.The 'Marry Me'...

Brit McAdams had an idea, one best explained by a couple of questions.
“What if an artist, someone like a Bob Ross, had a lot of power but didn’t use that power for good? What if that person, seemingly the nicest, most polite person on TV, maybe even the world, was not what they seemed when cameras stopped rolling?” the writer-director explained to The Hollywood Reporter while standing on the red carpet outside L.A.’s Theatre at Ace Hotel on Thursday night.
That served as the blueprint for his “silly, fun” new film Paint starring Owen Wilson as Carl Nargle, a wig-wearing, Bob Ross-inspired painter who unravels when a younger artist turns up, charms his circle and threatens his run as the No. 1 painter on public television in Vermont.

After starring in “Paint” as a Bob Ross-esque (but far more angry and tortured) paint instructor, Owen Wilson admits he’s warmed to finding his own sense of zen calm — not with watercolors and brushes, but with Crayolas.
“When my boys were little, at restaurants I’d give them crayons and try to calm them down, but I think that maybe adults should be doing that, too,” Wilson told Variety at the premiere of the IFC film at the Ace Hotel on Thursday. ”I don’t know why we ever stop doing that, because there is something really nice about trying to create something.”
“I guess there’s that Picasso quote: ‘I want to spend the rest of my life learning to paint like a child,’” he mused. “Not worrying about anything and just expressing yourself — that feels good.”

Jennifer Lawrence shows off her comedic chops in the new trailer for “No Hard Feelings,” the comedy from Columbia Pictures and “Good Boys” director Gene Stupnitsky.
The Oscar winner stars as Maddie, a woman on the brink of losing her childhood home if she doesn’t find a way to make money, fast. Out of desperation, she’s hired by a pair of helicopter parents to “date” their socially awkward 19-year-old son, Percy (Andrew Feldman), before sending him off to college.
The red band trailer begins with Maddie’s messy predicament: she wakes up one morning to find her car getting towed by a previous fling (“The Bear” and “Girls” star Ebon Moss-Bachrach) while another one-night stand is still inside. As an Uber driver without a car, she knows she’s in serious trouble.
Luckily, her friend (Natalie Morales) stumbles upon an online ad that reads, “Need a car? Date...

In Echo Valley, Moore plays Kate Garrett, a woman recovering from a personal tragedy while boarding and training horses at Echo Valley Far, twenty-two remote, Bob Ross painting-worthy acres in Southeastern Pennsylvania. “In ‘Paint’, Owen Wilson portrays Carl Nargle, Vermont’s #1 public television painter who is convinced he has it all: a signature perm, custom van, and fans hanging on his every stroke,” the official description reads, “until a younger, better artist steals everything (and everyone) Carl loves.”

In the trailer, Wilson channels the energy of Ross, the famous TV painter, into his character, but with a decidedly more zany personality.
At one point, his character is seen driving around a neighbourhood stealing newspapers off people’s driveways so they won’t read a negative article about him.

Following yesterday’s release of a brand-new poster, IFC Films has dropped the full trailer for Paint, a comedy which stars Owen Wilson as Vermont’s #1 public TV painter, Carl Nargle.

Get ready to paint some happy little trees with Bob R -- er, Carl Nargle. The latest trailer for the upcoming Owen Wilson film "Paint" just dropped, and the new movie seems to be doing for kitschy PBS painter Bob Ross what Showtime's "Kidding" did for Mr. Rogers. Namely, "Paint" centers on the behind-the-scenes turmoil in the life of a beloved, sweet public figure who played a formative role in the lives of several generations. In this case, the subject is a Ross-like character named Carl, played by Wilson in a permed wig. Armed with a paintbrush and a dulcet voice, Carl takes the world by storm with his paint-a-long programming.
"Paint" comes via IFC Films and is the narrative feature directorial debut for Brit McAdams, who also wrote the film. "Casual" actor Michaela Watkins, "Barry" supporting player Stephen Root (who's having a big day for trailers), "The Goldbergs" star Wendi McLendon-Covey,...

"Don't let fame bring out the worst in you." IFC has revealed full-length official trailer for the film Paint, from writer / director Brit McAdams. This looks like it should be an absolute delight - really looking forward to it. Owen Wilson stars as Carl Nargle, Vermont's #1 public TV painter who's convinced he has it all: a signature perm, custom van, fans hanging on his every stroke... until a younger, better artist steals takes it all from Carl. He soon finds himself in a rut, and the station isn't pulling in ratings. So when they hire a new painter to revitalize the channel, Carl's own fears regarding his talents are brought to the forefront. The film's cast includes Stephen Root, Michaela Watkins, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Lusia Strus, Lucy Freyer, and Ciara Renée. I adore Bob Ross, so I hope this doesn't smear him... but it also seems like an entirely different story.

The hook of IFC’s “Paint” seems to be “What if Bob Ross was challenged for public broadcasting painting supremacy by a younger and, yes, more inclusive artist?” Think “All About Eve” or “Showgirls,” in this case offering a set-in-their-ways veteran on-television painter and art instructor being usurped by a younger, more exciting upstart.
Owen Wilson isn’t literally playing late painter Bob Ross, who died at the age of 52 in 1995. However, at least some of the comedy offered up in the latest trailer for “Paint” is contingent upon audiences being somewhat aware of the beloved, soft-spoken artist. The hair, the gee-whiz sentiment and the soft color palette are all clear as crystal.
The only thing anointing this film as set in the present day, as opposed to the 1980s or 1990s, is a brief reference to an Uber. Well, that and an apparently intimate moment between Renée and Michaela Watkins.

I don’t know if anything is more soothing than Owen Wilson smiling while sporting a mighty blonde afro. With light twinkling in his eyes, Wilson stares into the distance, surrounded by happy little trees for IFC Films‘ new Paint poster. Owen Wilson appears to be channeling his inner Bob Ross in the first trailer for IFC Films’ upcoming comedy Paint.
Director Brit McAdams’ film is set for release on April 7 and stars Wilson as Carl Nargle, the beloved host of a long-running instructional painting series on Vermont public television. Trouble arises when a younger painter played by Ciara Renée is hired to attract a different demographic, exacerbating Carl’s deep-seated insecurities about his own artistic talents.
“You’re entitled to your favorite TV show — that’s what makes this country great,” a frustrated Carl begrudgingly admits in the trailer just before he is seen hurling a can of paint at a wall.
The footage also shows Wilson’s character receiving plenty of attention from female supporters, including an awkward moment involving a fondue outing with one particularly devoted fan.
Paint’s cast includes Michaela Watkins, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Lusia Strus and Stephen Root.

Paint’s cast includes Michaela Watkins, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Lusia Strus and Stephen Root.

Bob Ross now has his very own Aline Dieu. The teaser trailer for IFC’s upcoming comedy film “Paint” has been released, featuring Owen Wilson as “Carl Nagyl,” a fictional character that more than slightly resembles beloved television icon Ross.
