New Delhi, Oct 28 (Ians) Indian-American writer Madhuri Shekar says discrimination does not have to be overt, but is happy to see the tide changing in American showbiz.
Madhuri is the woman behind plays like "In Love And Warcraft", "A Nice Indian Boy", "House Of Joy" and "Dhaba On Devon Avenue". Her audio play "Evil Eye" has been adapted into a film backed by popular names like producer Jason Blum and actress-producer Priyanka Chopra.
Asked about the challenges she faced to earn a spot in American showbiz, Madhuri told Ians: "I have never experienced overt or blatant sexism or racism in my career, but I also know that there are far fewer people of my background working in this field than there ought to be. Discrimination doesn't have to be overt! But the tide is changing and I am so excited by the many 'desi' writers, directors and...

Evil Eye (Amazon Prime)
Starring Sarita Choudhury, Sunita Mani, Omar Maskati, Bernard White
Directed by Elan & Rajeev Dassani
There is very little reason why we should sit through this blindly fallacious fear fare. Yes, there is one good performance. And it’s always a pleasure to watch Sarita Cahoudhary ever since she made her memorable debut opposite, ahem, Denzel Washington in Mira Nair’s Mississippi Masala. We don’t see her often enough. But if this is the kind of cinema we get to see her in then we might as well not see her.
The evil in Evil Eye is such a dispensable imposition that we are left looking at a plot that seems to have been written with the sole purpose of making super naturalism look cool. Regrettably the eerie twist at the end is anything but convincing, let alone credible.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas recently spoke about her new all South Asian cast release, Evil Eye, produced under her home banner Purple Pebble Pictures and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions. The actress says the project is “a big deal” for her because of multiple aspects, one of which is the ‘two really strong female parts’, played by actresses of South Asian heritage: Sarita Choudhury and Sunita Mani.
Speaking with US-based entertainment television newsmagazine Entertainment Tonight, Priyanka weighed in on the diverse cast and said she wants to create opportunities for South Asian artists in Hollywood through her production house. “My quest in life, as a producer, is to influx Hollywood with brown people, because we don’t see enough of us. And to be able to do an all South Asian cast in a movie with Amazon and Blumhouse — who are both powerhouses — was a dream come true for me.”

Lover Come Back: The Dassani Brothers Explore Obsessive Love Through Genre Veil
For their feature film debut Evil Eye, brothers Elan and Rajeev Dassani straddle a set of juxtapositions, across two continents, two time periods and the thin distinction between life and death. Unfortunately, it’s somewhat of a Trojan Horse, masquerading as an ill-suited genre effort merely as a way to avoid explaining any real parameters for the supernatural conceit serving as the dramatic catalyst.
Still, it’s a welcome lead opportunity for the ever-luminous Sarita Choudhury, even though her character’s deep-seated cultural convictions could have been more deeply drawn. A notable supporting cast assists in keeping the narrative rolling to the end credits, but your own eyes might be turned skyward in displeasure if you make it to the fade out.…...

Blumhouse’s “Evil Eye” is a horror film that delves deeply into reincarnation and other Hindu philosophies, and star Sunita Mani saw similarities between the film and her personal life — one that was particularly “spooky.”
“My mom’s name is Usha, so when I read that in the script, I was like, spooky!” Mani told TheWrap, referencing Sarita Choudhury’s character, who plays Mani’s mother in the film. She explained that her connection to India became ingrained in her from a very early age, living in a south Indian household in Tennessee. She was made aware of the religion and customs through her parents and letters from her cousins who still lived in India.
“I definitely grew up with the concept of Evil Eye and reincarnation and the idea that family members or my mom would check charts and astrological signs, that’s huge in conversation and something that...

For their contribution to the Welcome to the Blumhouse collection of films, brothers Rajeev Dassani and Elan Dassani explore the horrors of modern dating and familial expectations in Evil Eye. The story, written by Madhuri Shekar, introduces us to confirmed bachelorette Pallavi (Sunita Mani), who lives in New Orleans, but still remains close with her family back in India, especially her mother, Usha (Sarita Choudhury), who she chats with regularly on the phone. One day, Pallavi ends up meeting the man of her dreams (Omar Maskati), but something doesn’t sit right with Usha, leaving the matriarch concerned that her daughter is in danger, and she has to do everything she can so that her daughter doesn’t end up meeting a cruel fate.

Amazon Studios upcoming film Evil Eye is set to take audiences on a wild ride of twists and turns. Starring Sarita Choudhury, Sunita Mani, Omar Maskati and Bernard White, the chilling, psychological thriller Evil Eye is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video now.
A seemingly perfect romance turns into a nightmare when a mother becomes convinced her daughter’s new boyfriend has a dark connection to her own past. Based on the audiobook by writer Madhuri Shekar, Evil Eye is directed by award-winning filmmakers Elan and Rajeev Dassani and co-produced by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Jason Blum (Get Out).
In the tradition of the best horror filmmakers, the Dassanis crafted innovative ways to frighten viewers using sound and image. “What’s great about making a film like Evil Eye is that you can play around with the genre elements,” says Elan. “You can shoot scenes entirely in silhouette, or add creepy audio effects,...

Any story can be a horror story with just the right twist. Such is the apparent thrust of filmmaking brothers Elan Dassani and Rajeev Dassani’s “Evil Eye,” which Shekar, who also wrote the screenplay for this latest entry into Blumhouse and Amazon’s burgeoning streaming film series, first presented the story of mother-daughter Usha and Pallavi through a series of phone calls and voicemails, all the better to build on their bond and then explode it outward into something very different. That idea doesn’t quite work in the cinematic adaptation, which tries to inject the story’s supernatural element too early — all the better to set up the film as a thriller worthy of the Blumhouse label — and robs it of the source material’s cleverness in the process.
It’s a strange pickle, to be sure. The film’s greatest strength — that it tackles a culturally specific storyline with care and respect,...

Amazon corporate synergy pays off in Evil Eye, a suspenseful thriller adapted by playwright Madhuri Shekar from her audio drama, which was a hit for the streaming giant’s Audible platform of spoken-word entertainment. This new iteration fits smoothly into Welcome to the Blumhouse, a series of original genre films by culturally diverse emerging talents, in this case marking a confident feature co-directing debut for Indian American twin brothers Elan and Rajeev Dassani. In another timeline, Sunita Mani is dashing between red-carpet premieres, celebrating her status as the next big thing with leading roles in a pair of fall releases. In 2020, the newly minted star of “Save Yourselves” had just finished the virtual junket for the Bleecker Street comedy when she spoke to IndieWire, going for a well-deserved walk after being cooped up and staring at a computer all day. A couple of weeks later, she’ll be back at it for “Evil Eye,” a new film from horror powerhouse Blumhouse on Amazon.
The titles are very different, but Mani has embraced disparate roles from the start. She made her feature debut with a supporting part in an incest drama dedicated to Éric Rohmer, Dan Sallitt’s “The Unspeakable Act.” Two years later, she danced feverishly to great comic effect in The Daniels’ high-energy music video for Lil Jon’s hit “Turn Down...

Blumhouse Television and Amazon Studios have teamed up to conjure Welcome to the Blumhouse, a collection of all-new, diversely-themed, brand-unified films from the eponymous fabricators of film frights, arriving just in time for a Halloween season that—unprecedentedly—won’t likely involve trick-or-treating. The first four in a total of eight films will have dual premieres on Amazon Prime Video across two weeks, starting on October 6, with Black Box and Evil Eye, followed by The Lie and Nocturne on October 13. Indeed, while the horror anthology series concept has experienced a resurgence in recent years, Blumhouse has upped the ante with a franchise of full-length horror anthology films.

Netflix’s first Arabic original series is causing an upset among some Jordanians, with a prosecutor asking the country’s cybercrimes unit to investigate it and take action.
The show, Jinn, is a young adult supernatural drama about magical genies in the ancient city of Petra. They must try and stop Jinn from destroying the world. The show is shot in Jordan and has five episodes.
The controversy is over two scenes in which female actor Salma Milhis kisses two different boys in separate scenes, a shocking move in the conservative country. Others complained online about the show’s rough language.
The series comes from exec producers Elan and Rajeev Dassani, who are the VFX specialists behind a raft of hit Us series, such as Scandal and Justified. It is produced by Master Key Productions and Kabreet Productions.

Representation and inclusion on TV appear to be on the steady uptick, but a closer look shows that progress is a minuscule move of the needle. We are seeing more black, Latino and Asian representation, but as we look deeper into specific portrayals within these ethnicities and races we have seen a stagnant pool of stereotypes — especially with regard to Middle Eastern and North African (Mena) actors.
According to a new study presented by Mena Arts Advocacy Coalition (Maac) titled “Terrorists and Tyrants: Middle Eastern and North African (Mena) Actors in Prime Time and Streaming Television”, there is a major gap in representation when it comes to Mena actors. When Mena actors are on TV they largely portray — you guessed it — terrorists and tyrants, stereotypical roles that have existed since the dawn of Hollywood.

Netflix has set “Jinn” as its first Arabic-language original series, a coming-of-age teen drama with supernatural elements that began production Monday in Amman, Jordan. The six-episode series is expected to be available to Netflix members worldwide in 2019.
Until now, Netflix’s only announcement of original content in Arabic has been of a stand-up comedy special with Lebanese comedian and actor Adel Karam. Analysts say lack of local content has held back the streaming giant’s growth in the Middle East.

After setting series in France, Italy, and Korea, Netflix is headed to the Middle East for its first Arabic original series, Jinn -- a supernatural thriller for teens.
The six-episode project, which is set to premiere on the streaming service next year, will be filmed in Jordan. It’s about a group of teenagers who see a Jinn -- a supernatural being that exists in Arabian mythology -- and whose friendships and romances are subsequently tested when they set out to stop dark forces threatening to destroy the world. Jinn will be helmed by up-and-coming Lebanese director Mir-Jean Bou Chaaya (Very Big Shot), written by Bassel Ghandour (whose film Theeb was nominated for an Oscar), and executive produced by twins Elan and Rajeev Dassani (Seam). The series will be produced by Master Keys Productions.

Although the name Bailee Madison may be relatively unknown to most people, the young actress has been acting since the age of seven. After playing having roles in Just Go With It, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark and on the kid TV show Wizards of Waverly Place, Madison is adding a staring role to her list, as Variety reports she has been cast in the indie romance-drama Watercolor Postcards.
Madison will be joined by Scrubs alum John C. McGinley in the project directed by Rajeev Dassani and written by Conrad Goode. The story is “centered on a smalltown girl, wise beyond her years, who returns home and inherits more problems than she brought back.” I was a big fan of McGinley‘s work on Scrubs, but I’ve noticed that he’s had a difficult time channeling that stardom to the big screen after having small parts in various movies over the years.
