What kind of movie is this?
Asking yourself that question can be one of the most exciting experiences in moviegoing. It happens a number of times during Mark Mylod’s “The Menu,” a movie that combines genres in the cinematic equivalent of fusion cuisine: it’s a satire, then a thriller, and ultimately a horror movie. Seth Reiss and Will Tracy’s script landed on the 2019 Black List, and it’s easy to see why:
Deep-pocketed foodie Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) takes new girlfriend Margot (Anya-Taylor Joy) on a trip to Hawthorne, an ultra-exclusive restaurant on a private island. It’s a foreboding place. Dead trees killed by saltwater on the eroding beach have their gnarled trunks shoot up through the sand. The culinary staff at the restaurant sleep on site in barracks-like living quarters, rows of cots lined up next to each other: after all, they have to rise early to harvest,...

What’s the matter with Pearl? Plenty, as it turns out in Ti West’s terrifically enjoyable postscript to his spring release X, which saw a 1970s film crew fall brutally afoul of an elderly farmer and his wife while shooting a porno in their barn. Unusually for a horror film, X had the same actress — Mia Goth — as both the final kill (the farmer’s psychotic wife Pearl) and the final girl (sex-film starlet Maxine), and this intelligent, not to mention almost indecently hasty prequel explains the reasons.
Pearl, screening out of competition at the Venice Film Festival, is that rare horror franchise follow-up that, while mindful of expectations from its predecessor’s core gore audience, has considered artful new ways to drill down into the essence of the original.

The world of Black reality television is slowly evolving, thanks to people like Issa Rae, who called it from the beginning. Perhaps the only woman to have cracked the code and raised the bar tremendously is Mona Scott Young of the Love & HipHop franchise. The story of Mona Scott Young’s domination of this area of television begins with that of rapper Jim Jones and dates all the way back to 2006. Jones was to shoot a reality show dubbed Keeping Up with the Joneses, alongside his long-term girlfriend Chrissy Lampkin. Soon enough, Jones’ then-manager Yandy Smith presented the idea

For those that might've missed out on The Lox and Dipset's highly entertaining and, at times, chaotic Verzuz Battle, you still have a chance to see the two iconic New York groups live. Ahead of the battle on Aug. 3, The Lox announced a multicity tour with Dipset called "The Rap Superheroes Tour." Joining the two groups for the tour, which kicks off in Atlanta on Sept. 16, is the hip-hop group State Property.
"Dipset and The Lox, a lot of camaraderie, a lot of good energy, a lot of energy to bounce off each other," Dipset's Jim Jones said on The Joe Budden Podcast back in December 2020. "Cam, Jadakiss, and Styles P literally started the same year to get into this game off of freestyles and things like that. We represent the uptown part of New York City. At 36, Buffalo rapper Benny the Butcher is a sort of old head in the genre, where artists with wild energy and disparate stories break young. Benny’s been working at it since the mid-Aughts, but didn’t manage to cut through the noise nationally until his 2018 mixtape Tana Talk 3. He’s also a street veteran, narrowly making it out of a lifestyle that usually ends in premature death or incarceration. His own prison bids over the years likely stunted his rap success, but he’s finally rolling in legal dough as a member of Griselda,...

People love cults. There are numerous reasons why, but it can’t be denied that it’s very easy for some individuals to get swept up in that cult mentality – be it Jim Jones, Scientology, the Rajneeshpuram community, the Branch Davidians, or Trumpism. And sadly, more often than not, cults can end in disaster and death. […]

Forget Kool-Aid, someone needs to warn The Deep not to drink the Fresca on The Boys. In the season two premiere, the disgraced former member of The Seven is bailed out of jail by Hawkeye knockoff Eagle the Archer after he causes a drunken scene at a local water park in Sandusky, Oh, and his new pal immediately offers him a nice, refreshing Fresca. At first, the moment seems like a strange bit of product placement, but later, when Eagle introduces The Deep to a woman named Carol, she too offers him a can of the Coca-Cola owned beverage.
It's unclear what the significance of the Fresca is just yet, and the soft drink doesn't appear to have any obvious ties to the comics on which the series is based. One thing is certain though, The Deep is definitely being recruited into a cult. In addition to pushing Fresca, Carol...

Things got really awkward after Gary Shirley let loose on baby mama Amber Portwood on the new episode of Teen Mom Og. He finally said everything he's been bottling up, and we think it was way harsh. Basically, he said that she uses depression as an excuse to be a bad mom, and that she needs to "put your damn kid first." However, he quickly came to regret the outburst and apologized on Twitter after the show. "I know we have overcome a lot since tonight's episode was filmed," he wrote, addressing Amber directly. Plz, forgive me." He went on to say that he should respect Amber because she's his baby mama, even if she makes him mad.

She may only be nine years old, but it sounds like she's running the show! On March 22, Teen Mom Og star Amber Portwood revealed that she no longer has a formal custody agreement with Leah's dad Gary Shirley. Instead, they leave it up to their daughter. “She’s getting older and it’s becoming to the point where she kind of decides when she wants to go back and forth and what she wants to do, which is a great thing," said Amber to Us Weekly. “It’s easier that way, you know?” Unfortunately for Amber, Gary isn't the only one she needs to share her time with Leah with. “Some weekends she wants to go and spend the night with her friends or do something else," she explained. "I mean, she’s a kid so I can’t really get mad at that. But I do miss her a...

Nightmares and monsters are only one click away on Crypt TV. Home to hundreds of short films, the tech-savvy company is making social media platforms the new home for horror, including Gabriel Younes' Sunny Family Cult. With the popular web series entering its third season this spring, Daily Dead had the pleasure of catching up with Sunny Family Cult co-star Russell Cummings to discuss his mind-manipulating character Elias, the reception the show gets from Crypt TV's passionate fans, and what draws viewers to cult stories across multiple mediums right now.

The Cannibal sub-genre usually divides the viewer in to one of two camps: horror fans who deem it “necessary” as part of their schooling to watch the gut munchers of the decade from the early ‘70s to early ‘80s, and those who completely stay clear after hearing stories of real life animal mutilation and on screen rape, not to mention an anatomical eye for grisly (and gristly) detail in that uniquely unsubtle, very Italian way. If you choose to wade through the jungle, there are simply no better guides than the denizens at Severin Films, who offer up a superb new disc of Umberto Lenzi’s Eaten Alive! (1980). If you’re new to this fascinating facet of horror, you might as well jump in here – there is no shallow end.

[[tmz:video id="0_2ucp22ws"]] Martin Luther King Jr. might have starred in the most important Super Bowl commercial of the year ... according to Jim Jones, anyway. If you missed it ... Dodge used a 1968 Mlk speech -- about service and community -- for its Ram trucks spot. Using his words to push truck sales rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. But Sunday night outside Craig's in WeHo, Jim had more of a silver linings reaction to the controversy.

Even before Nicolas Cage does a line of coke off a shard of broken glass in “Mandy,” the movie is batshit crazy. Panos Cosmatos’ followup to his wacky debut, “Beyond the Black Rainbow,” is another stunning dose of psychedelia and derangement, this one folded into the constraints of a woodsy revenge thriller, but that’s mainly an excuse for Cage to unleash his most psychotic extremes. Cosmatos gives him plenty of opportunities in this hypnotic midnight movie, which veers from astonishing, expressionistic exchanges to gory mayhem without an iota of compromise.

Emma Roberts and Evan Peters arrived in style for the Critics' Choice Awards in La on Thursday. Emma, who sported new bangs, looked lovely in a sleek white column gown while Evan cleaned up nicely in a black suit and bow tie. The couple have been dating on and off since 2012 and looked sweet as they posed together on the blue carpet - speaking of blue, we kind of miss the sapphire locks Evan had while playing crazed cult leader Kai Anderson on the recent season of American Horror Story. In addition to his role as a modern-day cult leader, Evan also portrayed mentally unstable criminals of the past, including Jim Jones, David Koresh, and Charles Manson. Details are beginning to trickle in about the upcoming eighth season of the FX series, but we have yet to find out if Ryan Murphy mainstays Evan and Emma will be returning for...

There are Famous Monsters…and then there are famous monsters.
Both Psycho and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre were inspired by the real-life crimes of mass murderer Ed Gein; The Silence of the Lambs, book and film, incorporated character traits of multiple serial killers in the depiction of Jame Gumb, the psychopath hunted by FBI agent Clarice Starling — with a little help from the imprisoned Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lecter, himself a (still-mysterious) amalgam of stranger-than-fiction monsters of past and present.
While the profoundly disturbing thriller Se7en reeked with authentic nihilism, and films like Dawn of the Dead and Hostel took blood-soaked pains to offer satiric commentaries on the sorry state of humanity, there’s an entire genre of films that bypass the more commercial goals of “escapism” in favor of more directly dramatizing the horrific tales we’ve read about in the newspapers, pored over in paperback, or seen described...
