"The Batman" was a bonafide hit in 2021, introducing a whole new take on the Dark Knight that resembled a David Fincher-esque crime drama. The film was director Matt Reeves' gritty, noir-inspired take on the DC Comics superhero, and it mostly worked, even if its inspirations were often a little too overt. After all, "The Batman" was basically "Se7en" with capes. But there were some undeniably cool elements in movie. Case in point: the Batmobile.
Partly inspired by Stephen King's "Christine" and sporting a distinctly rugged look, the Batmobile of "The Batman" was the most beastly yet. Much like the Batsuit in the film, this muscle car Batmobile looked as though Bruce Wayne could have built it in his underground bunker by welding various parts together and fabricating his own hellish creation. As VFX Supervisor Anders Langlands told /Film:

The Oscar for Best Visual Effects is particularly tough to predict because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in three stages. The members of the executive committee of the branch cast preferential ballots to determine 20 films for further consideration. These are then winnowed down to 10 semi-finalists, which were announced on December 21, 2022. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Visual Effects predictions.)
All members of the branch are invited to a virtual screening of excerpts from these 10 films in January at which potential nominees may discuss their work. Ballots are counted using a system of re-weighted range voting to determine the five nominees, which will be revealed on January 24. The entire voting membership of the academy will then vote for the winners, which will be revealed during the 95th Academy Awards ceremony on March 12.

He’s the one’s most connected to the world that I understand. It was a dream project” Watch the full exclusive video interview above.
“The Batman” is a new iteration of the iconic caped crusader directed by Matt Reeves. In it, Batman solves riddles and uncovers corruption in Gotham City to foil a serial killer targeting politicians. Suffice it to say that Avatar: The Way of Water commanded the Visual Effects Society’s attention. James Cameron box office-smash sequel scored a record 14 nominations for the 2023 Ves Awards, which were announced today.
Helped by three noms in the Emerging Technology category, Disney’s The Way of Water topped the single-year noms haul by Disney+’s The Mandalorian in 2021. It also shattered the old high-water mark for films, set by — no big surprise here — the original Avatar, which amassed 11 noms in 2010.

Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” now streaming on HBO Max and available for purchase on various digital platforms, is full of breathlessly rendered set pieces that rank amongst the best in modern superhero cinema – Batman’s Halloween-night prowling; the finale in the stadium; Batman’s visit to Falcone’s club. But there’s one scene that stands out above all the others – the very rainy nighttime car chase. (“The Batman” is so overwhelmingly rainy it makes “Seven” look like “Lawrence of Arabia.”)
In the sequence, Bruce Wayne/Batman (Robert Pattinson) is going after the Penguin (an unrecognizable Colin Farrell) in his souped up Batmobile, which is perhaps the most hot-rod-y version of the iconic car ever captured on film. After a brief false start, Batman charges after the villain, following him onto a rain-slicked and extremely packed expressway. In an attempt to lose his pursuer, the Penguin causes a calamitous pile-up.

Sunday night’s Oscar ceremony was historic in more ways than one, making the 441-day wait for the 93rd Academy Awards well worth it.
“The Father” star Anthony Hopkins nabbed actor, Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) took home the actress prize, Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) won for supporting actor and “Minari’s” Yuh-Jung Youn claimed supporting actress, becoming the first Korean actor to do so. Nine actors of color earned Academy Award nominations — an Oscar record for diversity in those categories — but only two won. Additionally, more women were nominated in 2021 than in any previous year.
“Nomadland’s” Chloé Zhao made history as well, becoming the second woman and the first woman of color to win an Oscar for directing. The film also won best picture.

“Mank” is the only film in contention at the 2021 Oscars to break the double digit barrier in the nominations count. This Netflix period picture reaped a leading 10 bids. In a six-way tied for second place with, appropriately enough, six nominations apiece are “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” All seven of these films are up for Best Picture. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was the big winner on the opening night of the 2021 BAFTA Film Awards, taking home two golden masks from a possible two.

“Mulan” is Disney’s live action remake of its classic 1998 animated feature, a $200 million China-set action drama directed by Niki Caro (“Whale Rider”) and starring Liu Yifei in the title role, Gong Li as sorceress Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor. Zack Snyder and Weta visual effects supervisors Kevin Smith and Anders Langlands are featured in a new episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Behind the Screen, during which they discuss the making of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, including a detailed look at the VFX, shooting the newly-lensed closing scene and working amid the pandemic.
Snyder says only a small number of the VFX shots from the 2017 Justice League were used in his new cut, meaning that nearly 2,700 VFX shots were completed on a tight schedule for the new four-hour release, available on HBO Max. “In theory, we kept [the ...

A wealth of visual effects were used to take viewers into the Imperial City and create epic fight sequences for Disney’s live-action “Mulan.”
VFX houses around the world including Crafty Apes, Framestore, Image Engine, Sony Pictures Imageworks and Weta Digital all joined forces in bringing the film to life.
The key to the film’s visual effects was to have audiences immersed in the vibrant world of “Mulan” and make them feel a part of the landscape and action. Director Niki Caro wanted to shoot as much as possible on locations and soundstages, while VFX would expand, replicate and create where needed.
More than 485 shots were provided by the team at Weta Digital. Extensive research was conducted to design an authentic layout of the Imperial City, which was given its vast scale using CG, equating it to almost the size of Manhattan.

“Mulan” lands on Disney Plus for subscribers at no extra charge this weekend. The live-action remake directed by Niki Caro is an adaptation of Disney’s 1998 animated film and based on Chinese folklore. The film stars Yifei Li as Mulan.
Weta Digital crafted hundreds of visual effects shots to reinforce the authenticity of the film’s settings and spectacular action to make the movie immersive and resonant. Their VFX shots spanned ancient China, and a key location is the Imperial City — fictional environments based on historical places and design principles, and the VFX house delivered the majority of the visual effects shots required for the movie, completing 434 shots in total.
Having begun working on the film in the summer of 2018, the Weta team went to China collecting the necessary shots before principal filming had even began, so much of their work was guesswork on what Caro would need.

The View Conference is offering free streaming access to its 2020 program, which runs from Oct. 18-23 in Turin, Italy.
“There has been so much bad news in 2020, so I’m thrilled to be able to share some great news for a change,” said conference director Maria Elena Gutierrez. “Everyone could use some extra light and joy in their lives, so we have made the unprecedented decision to make this year’s conference completely free.” Those who register will have streaming access to the conference’s 125 online and on-site talks, workshops, master classes and panels.
“Every session will be available online, allowing anyone to attend anywhere in the world,” said Gutierrez. “This is a fantastic chance to grow the View community and to welcome into our family participants who are unable to travel to Torino or buy a full access pass.”
Keynote speakers include Pixar co-founder Ed Catmull, Industrial Light & Magic’s Dennis Muren,...

It took home only three BAFTAs, but "Boyhood" was the biggest winner of the night as it won Best Film and Richard Linklater earned Director honors. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" took home five statues including Original Screenplay for Wes Anderson, Production Design, Costumes, Original Music and Make Up & Hair. "Whiplash" earned three BAFTAs including J.K. Simmons for Supporting Actor, Editing and a somewhat surprising win in Sound. Expected Oscar winners Julianne Moore took Leading Actress and Patricia Arquette took Supporting Actress. Eddie Redmayne earned a key win over rival Michael Keaton by claiming the Lead Actor BAFTA for "The Theory of Everything." The latter also won...

It’s almost time for the British Academy Film Awards, and earlier today (January 9) the illustrious list of nominees was unveiled. Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel” is out in front with 11 nods, while “Birdman” is close behind with an impressive 10 chances for glory.
Meanwhile, both Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) and Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) have been nominated for Best Actor, though Redmayne insists there’s no competition between them. He explained, "One can try and create a rivalry but it will not happen! We both absolutely understand people wanting to pitch us against each other, but we are old, old friends and I think he is the most wonderful actor. He is sensational in 'The Imitation Game' and I love watching him.”
The 2015 BAFTA Awards will be announced at the Royal Opera House in London, England on February 8th. And the nominees are:...

Ahead of the 72nd annual Golden Globes, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced the nominees for the 68th British Academy Film Awards (a.k.a. the BAFTAs) on Friday morning. Leading the pack is The Grand Budapest Hotel with 11 nominations.
The recognition for Wes Anderson’s comedy comes as a surprise since the film has only managed to pick up a handful of nominations in the U.S., including Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy and Best Director at the Golden Globes, which airs live on Sunday, Jan. 11.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just finished announcing their nominations for best achievement in film for 2014, with Wes Anderson’s quirky comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the pack with 11 nominations. Not far behind are Birdman and The Theory of Everything with ten nods apiece. All three films have earned nods in many of the same top categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and in their respective Best Screenplay categories.
Some may find it surprising that the most lauded film of the year, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, only made a showing with five nominations, but they were all in top categories (Film, Director, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, and Original Screenplay). However, it is a little shocking that no nod for editing was included (and that’s with six nominees already in the category due to a tie), as this is usually considered a...
