Oklahoma’s State Superintendent Ryan Walters has already made headlines for sending context-free porn to his fellow lawmakers. He’s now accusing one of the school districts under his jurisdiction of supporting the exposure of children to what he describes as “pornography” in schools. What horrendous, degenerate, pornographic display of hedonism is Walters’ administration accusing teachers of hiding in libraries? Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner, and Jeannette Walls’s memoir The Glass Castle.

Books are being pulled from the library shelves of an Iowa school district following new legislation from Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds, which purports to protect children from obscene material, The Gazette reports.
The new legislation, Senate File 496, prohibits “instruction related to gender identity and sexual orientation in school districts, charter schools and innovation zone schools in kindergarten through grade six.” It requires that every book available to students be “age appropriate” and free of any “descriptions or visual depictions of a sex act.”

The first new play of the current Broadway season, a stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini’s novel “The Kite Runner,” has closed on Broadway. A memory play that toggles back and forth between 1973 and 2001 and from Afghanistan to California, it depicts a youthful friendship that transcends class distinctions and an incident that irrevocably changes the two mates’ life trajectories. Amir Arison and Eric Sirakian starred as Amir and Hassan, respectively, under the direction of Giles Croft. The play took flight at the Hayes Theatre on July 21 and concluded its limited engagement on Oct. 30.

Update Broadway’s The Kite Runner will add a second weekly performance requiring audiences to wear masks, producers announced today. Beginning Sept. 7, Wednesday matinees, as with the previously announced Friday evenings, will be masked.
“We have received feedback from some theatregoers who remain cautious about being in an audience with non-masked patrons,” said producer Victoria Lang in a statement, “as well as others who are still immunocompromised. We want to give everyone the opportunity to see The Kite Runner and are offering this option to accommodate them.”
The more pervasive mask-optional policy, which remains in effect for other Broadway shows, will be followed for non-Friday Kite Runner performances.
The masks-on-Friday plan will remain in effect through The Kite Runner‘s limited engagement at the Hayes Theater, ending October 30.
The Broadway League announced last month that a mask-optional policy would remain in effect at Broadway venues until further notice, although each...

Khaled Hosseini’s 2003 bestselling novel The Kite Runner is the sort of compelling, epic morality tale that spans eras and cultures, depicts friendship and betrayal, loyalty and cowardice, acts of kindness and demonstrations of unspeakable cruelty. With its eye on an all-but-guaranteed redemption, The Kite Runner has an unmistakable allure – equal parts beach read and Serious Literature – that proved irresistible to Hollywood and, now, Broadway.
While the 2012 film adaptation made an early splash with some critics (followed by a backlash over some controversial scenes involving the depiction of child sexual abuse), The Kite Runner, despite its earnest, prestige sheen, got little more than shrugs at awards time. Today it’s remembered mostly for the controversy.
The latest incarnation, adapted by Matthew Spangler, opens tonight at Broadway’s Hayes Theater under the direction of Giles Croft. Despite its heartfelt intentions and some impressive performances, The Kite Runner doesn’t improve in...

Box office for most Broadway shows – Funny Girl and Mr. Saturday Night included – was up a bit last week, as the hits – Into The Woods and Mj included – stayed strong and even some struggling shows saw a slight uptick in attendance.
Although total Broadway box office was down 4 from the previous week, that was largely attributable to three fewer productions on the roster for the week ending July 17 – 26 shows compared to the previous week’s 29. Absent from list were the now-closed heavy hitters Plaza Suite, Macbeth and American Buffalo.
In all, the 26 productions grossed 28,989,978 for the week ending July 17. Attendance of 225,011 was down a commensurate 4 from the previous week as well.
Funny Girl, which has been slipping at the box office in recent weeks, saw a bit of an upturn, despite star Beanie Feldstein missing weekend performances due to tonsillitis (no official word yet on her return date). The musical...

Actor Manoj Chandila is an avid reader and is often seen catching up on his reading between shots on the sets. "I initially began reading fiction, Chetan Bhagat's work in particular. Soon, after reading most of his titles, I began reading Khaled Hosseini and became a big fan of his work, The Kite Runner especially. While it was a tad bit serious, it was definitely a book I couldn't put down," he says.
Manoj says that reading helps him stay calm and is of great help especially in today's times.
"There is a term called mental diet where one must be mindful as to what they watch or imbibe into their lives. To do so, one must always be out there seeking knowledge, be it in form of listening, watching or even reading. I believe that one should always utilise the extra time in hand to know or learn something new.

In 2013, a book called “Hyrule Historia” was the sixth best-selling title of the year on Amazon, right behind Khaled Hosseini’s “And the Mountains Echoed” and in front of Stephen King’s “Joyland.” But “Historia” is not a page-turning thriller or the work of an award-winning author. It is instead a compendium of art, notes, stories, and screenshots documenting twenty-five years of “The Legend of Zelda,” the long-running video game franchise that began in 1986.
Tuesday, Dark Horse publishes the third book in the series, called simply “The Legend of Zelda Encyclopedia,” the most complex art book Dark Horse has ever done. For fans, these are sacred texts, making real the stories and hearsay passed down for decades. For creators, they are a window into private work never before seen, a way to share the fruits of effort necessarily stripped from, but no less essential to, the final product loved by millions.

December 2011 has come and gone. The “feel-bad” movie of Christmas, writer Steven Zaillian & director David Fincher‘s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, came in with ridiculously high expectations and a lot of scrutiny trained on it. Now, as the home release has arrived, it’s time to take a deeper look at the adaptation.
Swedish journalist, author and researcher Karl Stig-Erland “Stieg” Larsson died of a heart attack in 2004 at age 50, not living to see his Millenium trilogy of crime novels – The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and it’s sequels The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest – first become international bestsellers and then an acclaimed film trilogy in Sweden. In 2008, Larsson was the world’s number-two bestselling writer, just behind The Kite Runner author Khaled Hosseini. In 2010, the trilogy’s final installment became the world’s most sold book.

Blame it on a lack of interest or dearth of information, but, either way, I sort of completely forget that the Timecrimes remake was even being prepared. The last news came in January; Steve Zaillian was rewriting Tim Sexton‘s take on Nacho Vigalondo‘s time travel thriller, which still had a planned release of 2012.
Now, a recent interview with ComingSoon sees the screenwriter providing a long-overdue update. From my perspective, the most important of these is that he’d like to direct — even if some real challenges lie ahead. His quote on said challenges can be read below:
“That’s something I might direct but I don’t know. We have to cast it, but it’s a tricky one, because I want to make it really low budget. I don’t want to do a really big budgeted film for that. I think part of its appeal is...

Leo Goldsmith introduces Late Hitchcock, a series running all week at Not Coming to a Theater Near You: "The border between guilt and innocence is fuzzier than ever in this phase, as is the line that separates sex from violence. The formation of the couple, the overriding principle of Hitchcock's work from the very start of his career, is especially embattled throughout Hitchcock's later films, challenged in the most shocking fashion in Marnie's marital rape scene, all but totally ignored in smothering political endgames of Topaz, and brutally cut short through violent sex-murder in Frenzy." Not Coming will be presenting Marnie at 92Y Tribeca on Friday.

Published in 2003, The Kite Runner, the first novel by Afghan-born writer Khaled Hosseini, chronicled the relationship between two boys growing up in Afghanistan in the 1970′s, against the backdrop of events such as the invasion of the Soviet Union, to the rise of the Taliban. Since it’s release it has become an international bestseller, being translated into a dozen languages, and spawned a play and an Oscar nominated movie. And now, as reported by Comic Book Resources, it is being made into a graphic novel illustrated by Fabio Celoni and Mirka Andolfo, and published by Penguin’s Riverhead books.
Speaking of the project, Hosseini revealed he read comics when he was younger, and it was this that influenced his decision.+

Here's what the movie is about from Music Box Films:
Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her beloved uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and the tattooed and troubled but resourceful computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) to investigate. You blame yourself for a past over which you had no control. You have one last chance to make things right but you need to take advantage of a man to do it. You take your chance. So Stieg Larsson finishes writing his debut novel, but doesn't bother waiting for it to get published before finishing up the next two books to round out a nice debut trilogy. Of course he dies before they're published, proving the universe is not a cold and indifferent place, but an actively malicious one. The Millennium series made quite a splash, enough that in 2008 Larsson was the second highest selling author in the world, behind only Khaled Hosseini. Our own Brian Prisco quite liked the first novel of the series (called The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in America and Men that Hate Women in the original Swedish) and reviewed it for the original Cannonball Read, back before it was trendy.

Author Khaled Hosseini and architect Thom Mayne will serve as artists in residence at the 2009 Los Angeles Film Festival. During the June 18-28 fest, they will program and discuss films that have inspired their work.
Hosseini has selected Cyrus Nowrasteh's "The Stoning of Soraya M.," which will be followed by a panel discussion that includes Nowrasteh, actress Shohreh Aghdashloo and religion writer-scholar Reza Aslan.
Mayne will take part in a dialogue, illustrated with film clips, with cinematographer Frederick Elmes about architecture and the movies.
"We love having artists from different mediums who share a passion for cinema and a critical and conscious engagement with society as our artists in residence," festival director Rebecca Yeldham said.

Slightly mawkish but effective nonetheless, Marc Forster's adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's bestselling book is detailed, visually sumptuous and possibly a bit too reverent to the source material but does an outstanding job presenting a world unknown to most state-side viewers. Certainly heavy-handed but sometimes when dealing with exceptional subject matter, a film can get away with a more sweeping, manipulative narrative and 'The Kite Runner' is a perfect example of prompting both tears and eye-rolls within the same sequence. With a cast of unknowns turning in impressively toned performances, it's an easy film to respect on the first viewing but may not hold up to scrutiny on repeats. Marc Forster, who went on to helm Bond sequel...

Based on the best selling book by Afghan American author Khaled Hosseini, “The Kite Runner”, was adapted for the big screen in 2007 and will be released on Blu-ray on March 24, 2009. When DreamWorks decided to endorse this film is because they already knew it was going to be a big hit, especially with the participation of producer and director Marc Forster. It is no surprise that the film received the Golden Globe nomination of “Best Foreign Language Film” [...]...
