Vera Drew’s debut feature The People’s Joker evades all easy descriptions. It’s a trans coming-of-age film constructed with deep knowledge and affection for DC comics (and their many film adaptations) that also takes aim at the male-dominated comedy community and the mechanisms that determine stardom. Combining comedy, action, drama and an impressive number of different animation styles, The People’s Joker is a self-conscious, intentional cult film, crafted with genuine love for everything in the margins. And it tells a story everyone can relate to, about a kid growing up and trying to find happiness and success in a dark, troubled world. And in this world, Batman is the villain. He rules Gotham with an army of drones, while using his power and influence to control every aspect of media and culture — even comedy.

Leonardo DiCaprio may keep his distance from the superhero genre today, but he was the studios’ favorite in playing some crucial Cbm characters. At the start of his career, he was offered the role of Robin in Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever. During the Dark Knight trilogy, Warner Bros. wanted Christopher Nolan to make The Riddler as the central villain in the third film. They wanted Nolan to bring DiCaprio on board the film for the same.

However, Nolan didn’t concede to the demands of the studio and insisted that he worked with a villain that suited the story. Nolan later worked with DiCaprio in Inception, which remains the actor’s highest-paying gig to date.

Compared to other superhero franchises, The Dark Knight trilogy features a disproportionate number of villains. A few of the standout antagonists in The Dark Knight Rises are Tom Hardy as Bane, Cillian Murphy as Jonathan Crane, and Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent.
Jonathan Nolan, who co-wrote the screenplays for The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises with his brother Christopher Nolan, the director, recently claimed that another villain who was never seen in a movie was supposed to make an appearance.

If Jonathan Nolan had got his way, The Dark Knight Rises would have featured the Riddler, not Tom Hardy’s Bane.
Jonathan Nolan has been out and about, promoting his new TV show, Fallout. You can catch our review of that show here, but while chatting with various outlets, the younger Nolan has been offering up some choice recollections regarding past projects. One such story emerged whilst he was a guest on the HappySadConfused podcast and it reveals how 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises would have gone in a very different direction if Jonathan had got his way.
When discussing how to follow up the incredible success of 2008’s The Dark Knight (which featured a villainous performance for the ages from the late Heath Ledger as the Joker), Jonathan (who is co-credited on the third film for the screenplay) found himself wanting to go in a different direction from both...

Looking at all the Batman movies that have been made so far, people might have noticed that a lot of the villains are repeated in the cinematic universe. From Christopher Nolan’s hot-take on The Joker to Matt Reeves with The Riddler, these villains are very well-known characters around the world.
Well, our team found something called the Bat-embargo which is essentially the reason for the lack of villains in the Dcau. The entire embargo is based on Christopher Nolan’s films and it seems that the Bat embargo is the reason why the Dcau has some obscure villains and the live-action has some fewer choices!

The role of Batman has been played by many different actors in diverse ways over the years. In 1989, Michael Keaton headlined the cinematic adaptation of the iconic DC superhero in Tim Burton’s Batman. The actor-director duo collaborated on two successful films before Keaton announced that he would step down from playing the character in the 3rd installment.

While Val Kilmer was chosen for the 1995 film Batman Forever, he was not the first choice to take on the role. Among the many potential celebrities who were considered, Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis was on top of the list. The method-acting genius though, turned down the coveted offer.

Keeping up with the latest Lego sets can be difficult. Not only are these playsets expensive, but every month, there's something new that beckons me to piece together these little plastic bricks to create a new display piece for my shelf. Whether it's the Ornithopter vehicle from "Dune" or the X-Men's signature jet from the animated series. This month, it's the Dark Knight who will be snatching money from my bank account in the name of Lego.

The overwhelming popularity of comic book movies over the past decade led many esteemed actors to take on blockbuster roles that they would have never previously considered. Paul Dano is a perfect example, having briefly traded his status as an arthouse darling for international superstardom when he played The Riddler in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman.”
In a new interview with The Independent, Dano opened up about taking his first dive into the world of comic book blockbusters. The actor explained that he was never particularly interested in the genre because he finds many of the movies to be overly predictable, but was persuaded to join “The Batman” based on the strength of Reeves’ writing.
“There are enough comic book movies where you just know what you’re gonna get,” Dano said. “Reading the script for ‘The Batman,’ you knew it was a real film. Every sentence… that’s just Matt Reeves.

Whether you loved The Batman (2022) or thought it was overhyped, it's hard to find anyone who didn't at least enjoy Colin Farrell's unique take on the Penguin.
So, when it came time to pitch a spin-off, Farrell's scene-stealing crime boss seemed the natural choice. He steals your attention anytime he's on the screen, and who doesn't love an epic crime drama?
Details on the new TV series following Oswald Cobblepot are scant at present, but we've managed to dig up a bit of info to whet the appetite.
Has The Penguin Been Greenlit?
Yes, The Penguin is in post-production as of the time of this writing, so go ahead and get excited. This isn't one of those things they announce, and then everyone forgets about it; it's actually happening.
Filming has already wrapped, and now it's simply a matter of waiting for the release date.

When making The Dark Knight films, Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan had a pact that they would walk away if they were fortunate enough to make three films. The pair stayed true to this vision and concluded their Batman adventure after The Dark Knight Rises. But if Nolan were to make a potential fourth film in the series, one fan had the perfect villain and actor suggestion for the Oppenheimer director.
Fan creates a trailer for a potential fourth film in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy
The fan made a concept trailer in 2012 with clips from previous films and chose The Riddler as the villain for the film. The fan’s choice of actor to play The Riddler was the Oscar-winning actor Casey Affleck. While the fan’s idea of a fourth film never came to fruition, it still has a lot of potential.

Though it’s based on a 2005 movie of the same name, Prime Video’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith is something that’s increasingly rare these days: an honest-to-goodness TV show. The Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane-created spy thriller understands the required rhythms of its medium very well. Each episode presents a self-contained chapter within the dangerous marriage of John (Glover) and Jane Smith (Maya Erskine) while also subtly forwarding their overall story.
The commitment to the usual TV format also means that Mr. and Mrs. Smith gets to introduce one hell of a roster of guest stars. Save for its finale, every episode of this show features at least one stupendously talented and famous guest star. If you’re wondering who each of these guest stars are or where you’ve previously seen them: don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. What follows is a list of the Mr. and Mrs. Smith cast,...

Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson will head back to Gotham City for The Batman: Part II as soon as this August, according to reports. More here.
Matt Reeves’ The Batman was one of the highlights of 2022. Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader made superhero films feel exciting again, and with the film doing well at the box office, a sequel was inevitable.
We’ve known for a while that the sequel is heading to cinemas in October 2025, and it looks like Reeves and Pattinson are heading back to Gotham City this August as the sequel reportedly begins production.
Bear in mind that the information is based on a leak, spotted and reported by World Of Reel, but the timeline would make sense. Originally, it was rumoured that The Batman Part II would head into production in March 2024, but with cameras rolling in August now, that October 2025 release date might still change

Let's kick some ice!
If there's one thing that Batman fans can agree on, it's likely that "Batman & Robin" is easily the worst Batman movie ever made. It's cheesy, nonsensical, and for some reason, it just doesn't work as well as Joel Schumacher's previous campy Dark Knight adventure, "Batman Forever." Even Bruce Wayne himself, George Clooney, can't help but mock his turn as Gotham's superhero.
However, there is something to be said about "Batman & Robin" basically being so bad that you can't help but enjoy how much of a disaster it is. The absolutely awful version of Bane, Arnold Schwarzenegger's terrible ice puns as Mr. Freeze, and Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson competing over who gets to fertilize Poison Ivy's flowers -- there's something for everyone to point and laugh at.
At the same time, you can't deny that every single one of the chief characters...

Robert Butler, the Emmy-winning, go-to pilot director who helmed the first episodes of such acclaimed shows as Batman, Star Trek, Hill Street Blues and Moonlighting, died Nov. 3 in Los Angeles, his family announced. He was 95.
Butler also co-created the Pierce Brosnan-starring Remington Steele (and helmed its pilot, of course), directed the first episode of Hogan’s Heroes in 1965, and called the first shots and set the tone for, Glenn Gordon Caron’s Moonlighting, Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Sisters and The Division.
In 1973, he directed the William Holden-starring The Blue Knight — the first four-hour television miniseries — at NBC and then got the CBS series adaptation of the Joseph Wambaugh novel that starred George Kennedy off on the right foot.
Butler also helmed two episodes of The Twilight Zone (the fifth-season installments “Caesar and Me,” starring his old friend, Jackie Cooper, and “The Encounter”) and worked on The Dick Van Dyke Show,...

Barry Keoghan is definitely starting to show up on everyone’s radar lately. After making appearances in films like Dunkirk and Marvel Studio’s Eternals, a mass audience may be starting to get more and more familiar with the Dublin actor. Then, Keoghan made a splash with his Academy Award-nominated role in The Banshees of Inisherin. Many have also seen him in another big role that they have perhaps not realized. Keoghan can be heard but not seen in Matt Reeves’ The Batman as The Joker. However, in a deleted scene of The Batman, Keoghan’s Joker can only be seen through a semi-transparent partition.
It had been revealed a while ago that Keoghan initially auditioned for the main villain role of The Riddler in The Batman. The Hollywood Reporter has now revealed that Keoghan was determined to play up his self-taped audition with some props that he purchased. Keoghan...

Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy could have looked a whole lot different if writer David S. Goyer and the studio had gotten their respective ways. As it turns out, Goyer wanted Jake Gyllenhaal as Batman and Warner Bros. pushed for Leonardo DiCaprio to play The Riddler.
While Goyer admitted on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he actively pushed for Jake Gyllenhaal to play the Caped Crusader, he’s far from being against Christian Bale’s interpretation of Batman; it actually comes across more that he wonders what the trilogy would have been with his choice behind the cowl. “I mean, Gyllenhaal’s amazing, Christian Bale’s amazing, so who knows what.”
And if you think Gyllenhaal as Batman is a huge “What if…?”, consider that the studio thought it would be a good idea to work in one of Hollywood’s biggest stars to step in as The Riddler for The Dark Knight Rises.

Paul Dano was determined to make the Riddler seem as real as possible for Matt Reeves’ “The Batman.”
Dano starred opposite Robert Pattinson in the 2022 Warner Bros. superhero film. “It’s always been hard for me to lie,” Dano told The Guardian of his approach to acting. “I’ve got to believe in what I’m doing. And then I’m going have to talk about it afterwards. That’s pretty painful if you don’t like it. Then you’d feel like a politician or a salesman.”
The “Dumb Money” star added, “As an actor, you’re always looking for anything to grab on to. What’s behind that door? What’s under that rock? Anything that’ll help.”
Writer-director Reeves recalled Dano doing “70 or 80 takes” opposite Pattinson across two days of production for the final scene between the Riddler and Batman.

With a performance as chilling and intense as Paul Dano gave in The Batman, you can tell he put the work in. But what you may not know is just how much actually went into portraying The Riddler. As it turns out, Dano would demand dozens upon dozens of takes while filming.
Speaking with The Guardian, The Batman director Matt Reeves said Paul Dano would give everything he had to ensure certain scenes were executed perfectly. “Paul loves doing a lot of takes, as do I…We took two days on the final scene between him and Robert Pattinson as Batman, and we must have easily done 70 or 80 takes. Paul loves exploring. He’s obsessive that way.”
Paul Dano would also be quite unpredictable as The Riddler, offering surprises for the cast and crew of The Batman. As Reeves remembers, “There were all these moments as the Riddler where he...

Batman's origin story is a tale as old as comic book time.
A dark and depressing alley. The gunshots. The falling pearls from a broken necklace. A need to take down criminals and a fascination with bats.
Bruce Wayne's journey to become Gotham City's protector has been everywhere, from film to gaming to TV. But it was the series on Fox that has a special place in our hearts: Gotham.
Gotham ran for five seasons from 2014 to 2019. The show, which you can watch online via TV Fanatic, followed many iconic characters in Batman lore years before Bruce put on the mask.
You got the seriousness of The Dark Knight mixed in with some fun comic book campiness. It was a best of both worlds that left passionate Batman fans divided over which tone they wanted.
The great thing about Gotham is that it fully embraced the antics of Gotham City.

It cannot be overstated how huge Jim Carrey was in the 1990s. The rubber-limbed comedian had a massive box office draw, going from "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," to "The Mask," to "Dumb and Dumber." These films helped turn Carrey into a household name — and helped him land a role in a major blockbuster, "Batman Forever." Carrey, with his over-the-top personality, made for the perfect choice to play The Riddler, the puzzle-happy villain with a fondness for the color green.
"Batman Forever" was a kind of reset for the series. After the ultra-dark, ultra-kinky "Batman Returns," Warner Bros. wanted to go a different route with the Caped Crusader. Enter Joel Schumacher, who took over for director Tim Burton and ushered in a fun, neon-lit, cartoonish sequel that wasn't afraid to get silly. Carrey's Riddler is a scene-stealer, cavorting through the film like an imp and undergoing several wardrobe changes in true diva style.

Those of us that were alive in 1989 can attest that Batmania had taken over. Warner Brothers’ marketing machine was working overtime to make sure that the bat symbol was everywhere. It’s no wonder that when the film came out, it was a giant hit grossing over $400 million dollars. Adjusted to 2023 rates, that is just over $1 billion dollars. When it came time for a sequel, the team got back together again and put out another home run although it would bring in a little bit less at the box office.
That was okay though as this time Warner Brothers had prepared to push the movie with all sorts of merchandise. Just about any type of clothing you could think of had a bat symbol on it. When it came time to make a third film, that’s when it all seemed to fall apart. Tim Burton had a...

The following article contains spoilers for "The Batman."
Paul Dano gave a powerful performance as Edward Nashton, aka The Riddler, in "The Batman." The character was re-imagined as a creepily modern (and realistic) villain who recruits followers online, keeping his identity secret. Nashton started off as a destitute orphan before taking out people he perceives as being rich and corrupt, all the while sending messages to Batman (Robert Pattinson), an individual Nashton thinks will be very pleased with his machinations.
Batman, as a character, is typically defined by his opponents and vice versa. Like The Joker (Heath Ledger) in "The Dark Knight" says to Christian Bale's Caped Crusader, "I don't wanna kill you, what would I do without you? Go back to rippin' off mob dealers? No, no, you complete me." The Riddler in "The Batman" is no different. Edward Nashton has a sense of hero worship for Batman...

“Gotham Knights” has arrived on The CW, introducing not only the adopted son of Batman, but the children of some of his most famous rogues. That includes Duela, who is apparently the Joker’s daughter — but is that actually her true identity? Well, Misha Collins won’t confirm or deny.
Here’s the situation: Duela (Olivia Rose Keegan) is a crafty, maybe crazy young thief, who we meet in the first episode of the new series. She’s flanked by Harper (Fallon Smythe) and Cullen (Tyler Dichiara), and together, the three of them are paid to break into Wayne Tower and steal a very specific gun. But, as it turns out, they were hired to do that job as a means of framing them for the murder of Bruce Wayne, who is, of course, exposed to be Batman.

But this time, instead of Batman saving The Riddler, Batman needs The Riddler to help save the Bat from certain death,” Minhaj said in a prerecorded video at Spotify’s Stream On event on Wednesday. “And this time, finally, the Riddler gets the spotlight that he deserves.”

There are a few phrases that no actor wants to hear.
For instance, if a director says "I have a lot of notes," it suddenly means the work day will potentially get a lot longer. "Thank you, we'll let you know" is not something a hopeful performer wants to hear from a casting agent immediately following an audition. Likewise, "We're looking for someone younger." Any one of these can cause great cracks in an actor's ego, which may be an actor's most prominent feature.
Most terrifying of all, however, might be "We can't see you as anyone other than Batman." This was something actor Adam West, according to a 2017 interview with Moviefone (the actor's last before his death) had said to himself a few times after "Batman" was canceled in 1969.
Typecasting, of course, isn't always a curse. Being typecast as a heavy or a villain, for instance, can sometimes assure...

As much as we respect Christopher Nolan for giving his Batman trilogy a clear-cut, definitive ending after only three films, one can't help but wonder what could've happened if there had been four or five movies in total. What other villains could Christian Bale's Batman have gotten to face off against, and what would that have looked like?
It's a juicy, albeit admittedly pointless question, as Nolan was always interested in doing no more than a trilogy, after all. But if a 2020 interview with Nolan and co-writer David S. Goyer is any indication, they would've picked the villain based on what they wanted Bruce Wayne's character arc in the film to be. "With these three films, and with 'Man Of Steel' even, we always said, 'What kind of story do we wanna tell about our protagonist, what kinda challenges do we want to have them face?'" Goyer explained.

Robert Pattinson is returning as the cape crusader in a sequel from Matt Reeves, who helmed his first outing as the Batman. The film concluded with a rather neat ending — Batman successfully protected the city of Gotham from the Riddler (Paul Dano) and is finally regarded as the city's savior. With Riddler in Arkham Asylum, the ending leaves much room for Reeves to incorporate various Batman villains from the comics.
One of the final scenes of the film already teased Barry Keoghan's Joker and the character's presence at Arkham, to fans' surprise. While Keoghan appears for mere moments at the end of "The Batman," during which he is seen maniacally laughing with The Riddler, there's a deleted scene where he talks with Batman himself. The existing filmed scenes could very well lead the way to the second chapter in the caped crusader's early years — and there's a comic book storyline that illustrates it all.

Happy New Year, Daily Dead readers! Today, I'm kicking off our annual "Favorites" series with my 2022 picks and you'll see favorites from other Daily Dead team members throughout the week. On this week's episode of Corpse Club, we'll also be discussing 2022 favorites and what we're looking forward to in the new year. Our favorites are a little different from a traditional "Best Of" list and our lists can include anything from movies and streaming shows to collectibles and events. In short, we’re sharing with you a list of our favorite horror experiences from 2022.
This year was interesting for me in that I truly felt I hit that tipping point where more was being released than I could possibly keep up on. If you stick to just watching movies, it's not impossible to check out every horror release, but when you add TV series, video games, and graphic novels, it becomes challenging.

There’s a reason Stephanie Hsu’s Everything Everywhere All At Once villain may feel oddly familiar.
The actor plays Michelle Yeoh’s daughter in the sci-fi epic, which is generating a large amount of Oscar buzz.
In a new interview, Hsu said that she studied Jim Carrey as The Riddler and Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker to inspire her role.
Carrey starred as one of Batman’s most enduring enemies in the 1995 Val Kilmer-led Batman Forever, while Phoenix portrayed the Caped Crusader’s other titular supervillain in 2019’s The Joker.
“All these men have played these really wild, grotesque, kind of unlikeable, but therefore likeable characters,” Hsu told Vanity Fair.
However, while her character of Joy’s chaotic nature may have taken some inspiration from Carrey and Phoenix’s characters, Hsu said there was still something unique in playing a female supervillain.

When it was announced that Paul Dano was going to play The Riddler in “The Batman,” fans were surprised but excited. Dano doesn’t strike people as the type of actor who would go for a big franchise superhero film, but when you see him, you can fully understand why he was chosen for the role. And apparently, even though Dano had to jump through hoops while working on “The Batman,” in terms of insane security, the actor has continued to work in the world of superheroes.

Paul Dano’s The Riddler was a menacing, Zodiac Killer-esque menace, a cryptic villain that wanted to expose the truths about Gotham City and Batman. As it turns out, the handling of his character was as much of an enigma as The Riddler himself.
In a new interview with GQ, Paul Dano–who of course portrayed The Riddler in this year’s The Batman–went into how precious production materials were handled on set. Dano said that all of the materials he needed–which could include character details and script notes–for any given production day were hard copies, as opposed to digital versions. He says he was told, “‘Don’t lose this. Put it in your ‘special binder.’…This was the first time I had a binder with a locking code on it. Then they added a tracking device.” Now that sounds like some Riddler-level control.

Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” script was kept under such tight lock and key that even The Riddler himself couldn’t crack the code.
Paul Dano, who played the villainous Riddler in 2022’s “The Batman” opposite Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne, revealed that the security around the DC script was unprecedented.
“‘Don’t lose this. Put it in your special binder,'” Dano shared with GQ Hype he was told by production. “This was the first time I had a binder with a locking code on it. Then they added a tracking device.”
Reeves’ “The Batman” also starred Zoë Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Colin Farrell, John Turturro, Andy Serkis, and Barry Keoghan. The film has already secured a sequel and multiple HBO Max TV series spin-offs, including “The Penguin” show starring Farrell.

"Batman: The Animated Series" isn't just one of the greatest animated television shows of all time, but one of the most perfect comic book adaptations in history. While the saga of the Dark Knight has been told many times on the page and screen, "Batman: The Animated Series" explored the depths of Bruce Wayne's psyche. Many Bat-fans would argue that there isn't another actor who has captured the essence of the character quite like Kevin Conroy.
One of the best elements of "Batman: The Animated Series" was the show's emphasis on Gotham City's rogue's gallery. Mark Hamill brought chaotic energy to the Joker, which made Batman's arch-nemesis both hilarious and terrifying. Other villains like The Penguin (Paul Williams), The Riddler (John Glover), Two-Face (Richard Moll), Catwoman (Adrienne Barbeau), Poison Ivy (Diane Pershing), and Scarecrow (Henry Polic II) received terrific spotlight episodes and storylines. The creation of the character Harley Quinn...
