The growing phenomena of event cinema took another step forward over the weekend, as a special performance of Billy Elliot The Musical was broadcast live to cinemas (both in the UK and abroad) from the stage of the Palace Theatre in London.
Reuniting the three people who originated the role of Billy Elliot on the stage - Liam Mower, James Lomas and George Maguire - amongst a cast of past Billys, what's of particular note is just how much business the performance did in cinemas. For early figures suggest that Billy Elliot The Musical Live topped the UK box office over the weekend, with a take of £1.9m. Second placed The Equalizer grossed £1.89m.

From the Nutcracker to American Psycho, from Mary Poppins to Kurt Vile, our critics pick their must-sees of the festive season
If you wish it could be Christmas every day
Nutcrackers, various
You know it's Christmas in the ballet world by the number of Nutcrackers touring the world's stages. In the UK alone, there are close to a dozen doing the rounds, but the top three remain the Royal Ballet's exquisitely traditional version, the sparky family friendly production by Birmingham Royal Ballet, and English National Ballet's – with the best snow scene of them all. Royal Opera House, London (020-7304 4000), 4 December to 16 January; Birmingham Hippodrome (0844 338 5000), to 12 December; London Coliseum (020-7845 9300), 11 December to 5 January.
Father Christmas
Does Father Christmas use the loo? Does he secretly long for summer? Does he have strong views on the size of chimneys? You bet he does. Raymond Briggs's gorgeous picture book gets a heartwarming makeover for under-sixes.

'Billy Elliot,' Original London Cast, Decca BroadwayAfter a three-year wait, the London hit has reached New York and looks to repeat its effervescent success on Broadway. There will be no local cast recording, as the West End version is considered completely representative. Haydn Gwynne, imported for the New York production, is heard here, but the Billy — one of the initial three — is Liam Mower. The group number "Solidarity" is solid; so is "Expressing Yourself." The common wisdom has it that composer Elton John (Lee Hall is the lyricist) writes better when rocking, but he upends that canard on a bonus CD by turning "Electricity" into a superlative show tune.'The Gig,' Original York Theatre Company Cast, Jay RecordsThe musical comedy gods finally smile on Douglas J. Cohen's adaptation of Frank D. Gilroy's film tribute to male bonding and middle-age crises. This long-overdue recording is another step in establishing the tuner,...

LONDON -- Elton John and Lee Hall's Billy Elliot -- The Musical led the way with nine nominations, including one for best new musical, as nominees for the U.K.'s 30th annual Laurence Olivier Awards were announced Wednesday. The three boys who took turns playing the title role in the show won a combined nomination as best actor in a musical. James Lomas, George Maguire and Liam Mower, who because of their youth had to rotate as the northern lad with dancing feet, will compete against Ewan McGregor and Douglas Hodge from Guys and Dolls, which snagged eight nominations. Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry and choreographer Peter Darling join writer Hall and composer John in the running for Britain's top theatrical awards. Daldry and Hall created the 2000 film on which the stage show is based. It was named best British film at the BAFTA film awards, with Jamie Bell winning as best actor in the title role and Julie Walters winning as best actress in the part of his teacher.
