Producers Christopher Scheimann and Olcun Tan have partnered with top sports director Bobby Razak on “The Power of 1,” a feature biopic of Ufc fighter Evan Tanner. Co-written by Scheimann and Razak, the movie is slated to go into pre-production toward the end of this year, with principal photography planned for early next year.
Tanner, a pioneer in the sport and winner of the Ufc’s middleweight title in 2005, died under tragic circumstances in 2008 while on a solo expedition deep into the California desert. He taught himself to fight at a championship level via instructional videotapes, and went on to revolutionize the sport with his innovative approach. He was reluctant to identify himself as merely a fighter. “I always thought of myself as the poet, the writer or the philosopher,” he said.

I remember when I was in film school, a professor told me that “real” documentaries don’t exist; everything is just a “movie.” Director’s bias comes through in the editing, the camera angles and of course the line of questioning. The sheer awareness of a camera alters the subject’s behavior and ultimately the truth. Only a hidden camera could have the potential of capturing observational cinema. I guess even that could be argued,...

The Los Angeles Film Festival has announced the world premiere of Richard Linklater's Bernie as the opening night film for the 2011 festival.
The film will kick off the festival on June 16 at Regal Cinemas Stadium 14 at L.A. Live. It is written by Skip Hollandsworth and director Linklater and stars Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, and Matthew McConaughey.
The film follows a beloved mortician (Black) from a small Texas town, even winning over the town's richest, meanest widow (MacLaine). Even after Bernie commits a horrible crime, people still will not utter a bad word against him.
"We're thrilled to be opening the Festival with the world premiere of this delicious black comedy - a treat from one of the most original and exciting voices in independent film, Richard Linklater," said Festival director Rebecca Yeldham. "With its fabulous all-star cast, Bernie is a perfect stage setter for the incredible line-up of...

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship competitor Justin Levens, 28, and his wife Sara McLean-Levens, 25, were found dead in bed in their Laguna Niguel, Calif., home Wednesday afternoon, police say. Both had gunshot wounds to the head. "This is a possible murder-suicide with him being the shooter," says Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino. "We also confiscated some prescription drugs found in the home, mostly pain-killing and anti-depressant type drugs, but we don't know whose name they're in or if there were prescriptions for them." Amormino adds that no suicide note was found, and that an unknown-caliber handgun was retrieved at the scene.
