It’s officially baseball season! Ben Gibbard returned to his hometown of Seattle to perform the National Anthem during Thursday’s Mariners home opener at T-Mobile Park. Fans were quick to notice how his version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” emulated the style of Death Cab For Cutie.
“ben gibbard is singing the national anthem at the mariners game and it just sounds like a death cab song,” read one tweet.
Last week, Gibbard spoke to Spin about his hopes for the Mariners in the 2024 season, predicting an 85-86 record for his team.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Car Seat Headrest, but the indie rock project of Will Toledo is back with a cover of Death Cab for Cutie’s “We Looked Like Giants.”
“We Looked Like Giants” originally appeared on Death Cab’s 2003 album Transatlanticism, and the cover arrives in celebration of that record’s 20th anniversary. The split single also contains a cover of The Beths and Pickle Darling teaming up to tribute another 20th anniversary of a Ben Gibbard classic: “Brand New Colony,” from The Postal Service’s sole studio album Give Up.
Toledo’s rendition of “We Looked Like Giants” stays pretty faithful to its original, albeit with a more post-punk inspired slant. Meanwhile, The Beths and Pickle Darling give “Brand New Colony” a rootsy twang with a healthy dose of banjo plucking. Pre-orders are ongoing for the 7″ vinyl, and you can stream both covers below.

Zooey Deschanel has been in the public eye for nearly three decades, and she's accomplished quite a bit in her lifetime. She made her film debut in the 1999 film "Mumford," but arguably became well-known after starring in the beloved 2003 Christmas flick "Elf." Following her success from "Elf," Deschanel appeared in a number of popular movies throughout the remainder of the 2000s, including "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," "Yes Man," and the indie rom-com "500 Days of Summer" alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Film is not the only place Deschanel is popular, however. She is also well-known for her role as Jessica Day in the sitcom "New Girl" and for being one half of the music duo She & Him. Currently, she hosts a cooking show on Max called "What Am I Eating?" and stars as Kelly in the third season of AppleTV+'s "Physical."

Ahead of their co-headlining tour with The Postal Service, Death Cab For Cutie have unveiled a new song called “An Arrow in the Wall.” What’s more, the 12-inch physical release also includes a remix of the song from Chvrches.
“‘An Arrow In the Wall’ is about the warning signs all around us in the 21st century that society-at-large is in decay,” Dcfc frontman Ben Gibbard said in a statement. “The arrow lodged in the wall might have missed this time, but it would be naive to assume the next one won’t also.”
Regarding the song’s companion remix, Gibbard said Chvrches “took our maudlin little dance track and turned it into a major key club banger.”
Listen to both “An Arrow in the Wall” and Chvrches’ remix of the song below. Pre-orders for the 12-inch vinyl are ongoing.
Dcfc’s co-headlining tour with The Postal Services officially launches on September 5th.

Knowing producer Bill Lawrence has plenty of benefits, including access to his address book full of connections. That’s according to composer Tom Howe, who worked with Marcus Mumford and Ben Gibbard on the themes songs for two of Lawrence’s shows, Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso and Shrinking, respectively.
“When we started in Season 1 [of Ted Lasso], Marcus and I were sort of put together by a great friend of Jason’s [Sudeikis] and I knew Bill [Lawrence]. We met for breakfast and we got on and he invited me to his house to hang out. So I flew from [Los Angeles] to Devon, which is in the middle of nowhere in England, and stayed there for 10 days with Marcus. Considering I had only met him once for breakfast, it was quite interesting,” Howe told Deadline during a panel for the shows at Sound & Screen: Television.
“We hung out for 10 days having no footage or scripts or anything.

Scary fish lurking in the depths of the ocean served as the unlikely inspiration for the title theme of Apple TV+’s newest show, “Shrinking.”
Starring Jason Segel, Harrison Ford and Jessica Williams, the series follows a group of therapists as they navigate their own problems along with those of their patients. Aptly titled “Frightening Fishes,” the theme song — co-written by show composer Tom Howe and Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard — stems from the idea of “letting the wreckage of your life sink to the depths of the ocean and the seas – those unexplored places,” Gibbard tells Variety.
The song’s lyrics — “Help me carry this weight, that’s dragging me down/ Pull me out of the drink before I start to drown/ Let the wreckage all sink to where the fishes are frightening” — serve as a metaphor for the show’s struggling characters. Ford plays Paul, a...

Singer and songwriter Charlotte Lawrence stunned wearing an incredible sheer blouse for a fashion show in Paris.
Besides dedicating her life to music, Lawrence is also a model. She is signed to Img Models and has appeared in magazines such as Teen Vogue.
Somehow, she still found time to attend the Yves Saint Laurent fashion show in the beautiful romantic French city.
She wore a sheer black tank top, a long velvet skirt, and a thin black belt.
She used a puffy brown jacket with fur all around the edges to protect herself from the elements.
Her brown hair was styled in a high voluminous bun with a couple of loose strands framing her face.

Noah Cyrus opens her debut full-length with a stark lyric: “When I turned 20, I was overcome/With the thought that I might not turn 21,” she murmurs over fingerpicked guitars and whispers of feedback. It’s a grab-you-by-the-throat introduction that is a fitting opening for The Hardest Part, a compact yet emotionally resonant collection of Laurel Canyon-recalling pop from the youngest member of the Cyrus clan. Channeling Cyrus’ recent travails, which include the death of her grandmother, her parents’ romantic problems, and her own addiction to and recovery from Xanax, The...

Sometimes the aftermath of ending a relationship isn’t the hardest part. On her latest single “Every Beginning Ends,” Noah Cyrus makes a case for the moment of realization that you’ve already fallen out of love before it’s even over. The country ballad recruits Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard for the quiet conclusion of a breakup settled in the truth that all good things must come to an end.
“You have to wake up every morning/And choose to love someone,” the pair sing tenderly on the chorus.

Noah Cyrus is going to break our achy, breaky hearts. The hardest part of Noah's upcoming album might be a new song that she said took inspiration from her parents Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus' divorce. The track, titled "Every Beginning Ends," is a heartbreaking country ballad of two lovers whose romance has worn out. Noah duets with Death Cab for Cutie's Benjamin Gibbard as the two of them take turns singing verses about bittersweet memories. Noah says in the song, out Aug. 26, "You used to kiss me without a reason," to which Benjamin replies, "No one's made me laugh like you do." The pair confess together, "You have to wake up every morning and choose...

Death Cab for Cutie traverse new sonic territory with the quasi-experimental new single “Foxglove Through the Clearcut,” which comes off the band’s upcoming studio album Asphalt Meadows, out September 16.
Combining spoken word elements with the band’s signature observational lyricism and introspective instrumentation, the song examines the thoughts brought about by aimless wanderings, random encounters and solitude. Initially morose and defeatist in its opening stanzas — frontman Ben Gibbard pleadingly repeats the phrase “nowhere left to go” during an early refrain — the song builds to a swirling crescendo of dreamy...

Death Cab for Cutie has released a new single, “Here to Forever,” along with a music video written and directed by filmmaker Lance Bangs.
The clip depicts frontman Ben Gibbard being forced to deal with packaging the band’s vinyl himself after having a conversation with two inept pressing plant employees, played by comedians Natalie Palamides and Courtney Pauroso. The scenes are cut between clips of the band performing the track and Gibbard’s interactions with the pair.

Death Cab for Cutie have released a new single, “Roman Candles,” offering fans the first listen of the band’s upcoming 10th LP, Asphalt Meadows, out Sept. 16 via Atlantic. The distinctively heavy song, along with the rest of the album, was produced by John Congleton.
“‘Roman Candles’ is about the crippling, existential dread that goes hand in hand with living in a nervous city on a dying planet,” the band explained in a statement. “And that the only way to be in the moment is to let it all go.

Death Cab for Cutie brought the rumbling grooves of Kintsugi's "No Room in Frame" to The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Monday.
The group moved effortlessly through the slow burning cut off their 2015 album. The song's keyboard flourishes frame Ben Gibbard's heartfelt vocals. "No Room in Frame" builds on the dreamy, cinematic twang of Gibbard's guitar.

Mumford & Sons, Deathcab for Cutie Singer Rip Jay Z’s Tidal: ‘This Thing Is Going to Fail Miserably’
British folk band Mumford & Sons and Deathcab for Cutie singer Ben Gibbard had some harsh words for Tidal, the music streaming service recently relaunched by Jay Z. “I think they totally blew it by bringing out a bunch of millionaires and billionaires and propping them up onstage and then having them all complain about not being paid,” Gibbard said in an interview for The Daily Beast. “That’s why this thing is going to fail miserably.” Gibbard was apparently unimpressed with Tidal’s star-studded launch in March which featured music artists Madonna, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Usher and Deadmau5, as well as Mrs.

Andy Chen, the CEO of Tidal’s parent group Aspiro, acquired by Jay Z in February, is being replaced. The interim successor is former CEO Peter Tonstad, who has been with the company since 2010. In a statement, Tonstad says: I believe in Tidal and what the team is doing to affect the change the music industry needs. We're streamlining the company and refocusing our resources to ensure the platform continues to grow, and listeners can make a connection to their favorite artists. No one else is doing this. At the moment, very few people share his faith. Artists including Mumford & Sons, Steve Albini, and Ben Gibbard have all been publicly critical of Tidal and its high-profile shareholders' plea for $20 a month for "lossless sound." It's the steepest price on the streaming market, and when the wealthiest pop stars in the world ask fans to pay more money for something that,...

Once upon a time, filmmakers Spike Jonze and Sofia Coppola were married. While fitting the dreams of film hipster heaven, their marriage ended long before the Internet could freak out about their seemingly perfect union, not unlike the way it did during the twee super marriage of Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard and Zoe Deschanel (it, too, didn't last). "It's not Spike," Coppola insisted in 2003 about Giovanni Ribisi’s portrayal of a character in “Lost In Translation” many felt was a dig at her ex-husband. "But there are elements of him there, elements of experiences. There are elements of me in all the characters." Regardless, people have drawn lots of parallels between Coppola’s “Lost In Translation” and Jonze’s 2013 film, “Her,” starring Joaquin Phoenix. Video essayist Jorge Luengo Ruiz has gone one step further and created “Lost in Translation // Her: An Unloved Story,” a beautiful video...

In the early '00s, the band Death Cab for Cutie became synonymous with a sort of muted adolescent angst. Lead singer Ben Gibbard, whose gentle voice lends a childlike quality to the music, often used opaque lyrics to capture the mystifying passions of young love. The new Death Cab for Cutie album, Kintsugi, is somewhat of a departure. Gibbard's lyrics are more direct and authoritative. It's an album for adults. That said, at 38, Gibbard looks back fondly at the songs from those early Death Cab years. Vulture spoke with him recently about his favorite tracks from the band’s catalogue. It wasn't easy to pick just one song from each record, he said. "They're all my children," but these are a few of the highlights."The Face That Launched 1000 Shits," Something About Airplanes (1998) It’s a song that was written by our friend Jay Chilcote from the Revolutionary Hydra,...

Death Cab For Cutie have been relatively generous ahead of their new album Kintsugi‘s release, offering the video for “Black Sun” and live previews of many of the tracks. Now they’ve shared the studio version for one of the songs they played back last month during a show in their hometown of Seattle. “No Room in Frame” is twangy slice of soft rock with vocalist Ben Gibbard’s vocals at the forefront. Related: Death Cab for Cutie Call the Shots in ‘Black Sun’ Video: Watch The song, like the rest of the album, features guitar work from recently departed founding member and producer Chris Walla. Coincidentally or not, it has a sentimentality. “We’ll both go on being lonely with someone else,” Gibbard sings. Kintsugi, the band’s first album since 2011’s Codes and Keys, is due out March 31.

Foo Fighters have dropped the first full song from their new effort "Sonic Highways": "Something From Nothing." It's a nice li'l hard rock hat tip to metal influencers, perhaps and maybe specifically Dio and his "Holy Diver." "Sonic Highways," overall, should be an album that honors rock 'n' rollers of past and present: the band went to eight different cities collaborating in eight different legendary studios and combining with no less than eight guests, from Ben Gibbard and Carrie Underwood, to Joe Walsh and Bad Brains. The album is out on Nov. 10; the HBO documentary series of the same name, helmed by frontman Dave Grohl, starts tonight (Oct. 17).
