An action movie is created to excite and wow us, taking the audience on a rollercoaster ride to see if and how our protagonist — who may or may not be much of a hero — survives amid pure chaos. It’s also a genre that often strives to top itself. Many of our favorite films have found new ways to raise the bar, whether it be through the storytelling, cast, or sequences that completely change the game.
Den of Geek is celebrating 15 movies that looked forward, whether they were celebrated in their day as innovators or have been finally reevaluated years after release. All of these action movies were ahead of their time, whether it be through never-before-seen fight choreography and stunt work or advancements in special effects and storytelling.
Seven Samurai (1954)
Yeah, we all know that one film nerd who gets on your case about watching Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai at least once.

The Reservoir Dogs scene about Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” prompted the singer to correct Quentin Tarantino.
In the filmmaker’s 1992 directorial debut, which was released in the US 30 years ago this week, the opening scene sees the main characters engaging in a discussion about Madonna’s 1984 song “Like a Virgin”.
It’s the character of Mr Brown, played by Tarantino, who posits that the song is “about a girl who digs a guy with a big dick”.
He adds: “The entire song – it’s a metaphor for big dicks.”
Mr Blonde (Michael Madsen) disagrees with Mr Brown, and says he thinks the song is about a woman who has been hurt by several relationships, and who eventually finds a nice guy.

In the filmmaker’s 1992 directorial debut, which was released in the US 30 years ago this week, the opening scene sees the main characters engaging in a discussion about Madonna’s 1984 song “Like a Virgin”.
It’s the character of Mr Brown, played by Tarantino, who posits that the song is “about a girl who dares a guy with a big dick”.
He adds: “The entire song – it’s a metaphor for big dicks.”

Seth MacFarlane Returns to an Uptempo Take on Big-Band Jazz With New Album, ‘Blue Skies’ (Exclusive)
For Seth MacFarlane, “blue” means less balladic. He’s announcing a new album on the way, “Blue Skies,” and says it marks a return to a more swinging style than the softer approach he employed on his last record.
Out May 20, the seventh album from the “Family Guy” creator and jazz cat will again see him working with a catalog of classics, and again see him working closely with arranger and conductor Andrew Cottee. Still, it’ll mark a turnaround from their previous release.
“I have long been a fan of Andrew Cottee’s supremely artful and buoyant orchestrations,” MacFarlane tells Variety. “So after our last collaboration, ‘Once in A While,’ a ballad-themed record, I really wanted to hear what he could do with an up-tempo album. As always, Andrew did not disappoint. His arrangements of these 14 songs, carefully selected by the two of us, are yet another shining example...

ABC released key art for the 94th Academy Awards on Friday — and it features the first official shot of this year’s three Oscar hosts.
The 94th Oscars will be held March 27, with an in-person ceremony at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre that will air live on ABC. Last month, the Academy announced that Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes would be hosting the big night.
In Tuesday’s image, Hall, Schumer and Sykes are seen sitting in a movie theater with their hands held high. The words “Movie lovers unite” sit above the Oscars’ logo.
In addition to the Oscars hosts, previously announced awards presenters include Simu Liu, Rami Malek, Zoë Kravitz, Lily James, Lady Gaga, Youn Yuh-jung, Rosie Perez and Chris Rock.
The films leading Oscar nominations are “The Power of the Dog” and “Dune,” with 12 and 10 nods, respectively. “Belfast” and “West Side Story” each received seven nominations.

The “Madea” movies have only intermittently done right by the character of Madea. Tyler Perry’s creation Mabel “Madea” Simmons is an outrageously anarchic agent of chaos that, until now, has never fit particularly comfortably in Perry’s didactic melodramas. (Imagine Bugs Bunny getting stuck in the world of “Davey & Goliath.”)
With “A Madea Homecoming,” Perry has — probably for the first time since “Madea’s Big Happy Family” — created a vehicle that lets Madea be Madea. No longer required by Perry the executive producer to tone down the material for a family-friendly PG-13 rating, Perry the writer-director-actor lets Madea be the blunt-talking, gun-toting, no-nonsense Thc enthusiast that the character was always meant to be.
Madea’s extended family — including Uncle Joe (also Perry), Aunt Bam (Cassi Davis Patton), Mr. Brown (David Mann), and Cora (Tamela Mann) — gathers at her house for the graduation of Tim, who’s the valedictorian at a never-named Hbcu.

Tyler Perry’s previous Madea movies have raked in more than $600 million at the box office. But a theatrical debut for “A Madea Homecoming,” which launches Feb. 25 on Netflix, was never part of his conversation with the company.
“I didn’t even think about it. They’re a streaming service, and I understand the importance of making content in support of that,” Perry tells Variety, noting that he released “Madea’s Farewell Play,” a filmed version of the stage show, on BET Plus when launching the streamer with ViacomCBS in 2019.
Despite skipping the megaplex this time, Perry is still a believer in the theatrical experience.
“There will be some slight changes or some erosion, but some movies and experiences are meant to be enjoyed in a room full of people on a huge screen, and not on the computer or television,” he says. “My hope is that theaters and theater chains...

America’s favorite grandmother Mabel “Madea” Simmons is back and badder than ever — meaning she’s still “braless and lawless.” Netflix dropped the trailer Wednesday for Tyler Perry’s “A Madea Homecoming,” the 12th installment in the iconic franchise.
“Black don’t crack… unless you’re using it,” Madea says in the trailer for the film, which will center around her great-grandson’s college graduation, where hidden secrets and family drama threaten to ruin the celebratory reunion. The movie streams on Feb. 25.
Perry — who has been playing Madea since 1999, when he first debuted the character in his play, “I Can Do Bad All by Myself” — was planning to retire his gray wig after 2019’s “A Madea Family Funeral” and his 2020 live “Farewell Play Tour,” but changed his mind after the pandemic hit.
He told Variety in 2020, “I was done with Madea, completely done with it … But as I’ve been...

Madea, the gun-toting grandmother who can rock a house arrest ankle bracelet like no one else, is making her Netflix debut next month.
Tyler Perry’s beloved character is emerging from retirement after 2019’s “Madea’s Family Funeral” and returning for “A Madea Homecoming,” which is scheduled to premiere on Feb. 25.
Perry will write, direct and star in the movie, the 12th installment in the long-running film franchise. The latest chapter in the commercially successful Madea Cinematic Universe centers around the character’s great-grandson’s college graduation. However, the celebratory moment hits a halt as hidden secrets and family drama threaten to destroy the happy reunion.
Neither Perry nor Netflix has offered up specifics about said “hidden secrets” and “family drama,” though the filmmaker hinted to Entertainment Weekly that it’ll involve an LGBTQ+ storyline. Perry hopes the message will encourage audiences to be more inclusive.

Introducing the cast of “Tyler Perry’s Assisted Living,” Tyler Perry’s latest comedy for BET.
The series stars Na’im Lynn, J. Anthony Brown, Courtney Nichole, Tayler Buck and Alex Henderson, while longtime Tyler Perry collaborators David and Tamela Mann reprise their roles as Mr. Brown and Cora.
In an exclusive behind the scenes clip, David Mann shares why he’s excited to play Mr. Brown again.
“Having Mr. Brown on a new project is kind of a breath of fresh air for me because it’s somebody new for me to fight with, some new friends,” David Mann says. “And, of course, bringing Cora along is that added bonus. … Mr. Brown was crazy before, but now that he has someone else to take him to the next crazy level, it’s gonna be fun.”
Tamela Mann adds: “Cora is the peacemaker, I’m always – even with Madea and Mr.

Tyler Perry’s Madea will take one last bow on August 27, when a filmed version of the character’s final stage tour premieres on BET+.
The subscription streaming outlet announced the release date Wednesday for Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Farewell Play, which it bills as the “final stage run” for Madea. A press release said Perry, as Madea, “pulls together some of his audience’s favorite characters for a family gathering” in a performance lasting more than two hours. Perry is executive producer, directed and writer, in addition to his starring role.
Current events, including Covid-19, enter the scene. The live show was filmed in May, judging by a glimpse of the theater marquee in a promo for the special (watch it above). At one point, Madea separates two women who are about to hug each other. “Got that coronavirus going around!” she cracks.

Bet has picked up a revival of Tyler Perry’s “House of Payne,” the network announced Tuesday.
The comedy, which centers on retired fire chief Curtis Payne (Lavan Davis) and his wife Ella (Cassi Davis Patton), originally aired on TBS from 2006 to 2012. The first run of the show spanned more than 250 episodes and later spawned a one-season spinoff, “The Paynes” on Own.
According to Bet, the new revival picks up five years later “as they continue to navigate the problems of life with their quirky modern-day family.” Production on the series is currently underway with much of the original cast set to return.
