Welcome to the latest instalment of a brand-new feature here on Nerdly, where one of our comic gurus, Ian Wells, delves into comics history and dissects Comics Interview, the long-running journal of interviews and criticism from David Anthony Kraft.
A Yak With Dak
David presents us with more of the same in his Upfront editorial. Every issue reads the same, a rundown of what is in store. All information we can get from the cover. From the information we get on the cover, you would be forgiven for thinking this interview isn’t going to offer much. The two biggest interviews revolve around Dak’s friends in the industry. But as you unpack the contents page there is actually a lot to sink your teeth into. I would prefer if Dak used this space to give more real inside information on the industry. With the many hats he has worn in the industry,...

James Gunn sparked fans' excitement recently when he shared an illustration from the landmark DC comic "Kingdom Come" on Twitter. The 1996 miniseries, from Alex Ross and Mark Waid, remains not only the most beloved comic of DC's Elseworlds imprint but is also considered to be one of the company's best stories in general. Gunn posted a picture of Superman and co. gathered around a table with just two words: "Making plans." While some thought this could mean a "Kingdom Come" film is on the way — which would be amazing — it might also simply be alluding to the fact that Gunn and Peter Safran are making a lot of big plans for the future in their new positions as heads of brand new Warner Bros. Discovery film division, DC Studios.
We know about DC's immediate movie plans, but the future of this universe has seemed somewhat up in the air as of late.

Although the 80-page giants generally have been pretty good, especially the wave of books we had celebrating various character anniversaries, DC of late have struggled a little with the anthology books. I should say it’s not just DC, but as once upon a time they were the masters of the format it is most noticeable with them. The mix of creative teams isn’t the issue either. A blend of known names and up-and-comers was always the way DC’s mystery books operated, and it served them very well. What drew me to this book the most was Paul Levitz writing Phantom Stranger (that alone is worth the entrance price), and Tom Mandrake and Kelley Jones illustrating two tales. Let’s hope the other stories can add some scary fun as well.
The know the score with these books,...

Ah, Legends of the Dark Knight. That’s a grand old name. I say that as someone who bought the first issue of the original Legends book back in 1989. The first issue printed with several different coloured covers, and muggins here bought the lot. The speculator craze of the 1990’s had yet to hit, in all its chrome cover and polybag lunacy, so I was ahead of the curve in telling DC Comics to literally take all of my money. The early years of the book featured some great stuff, self contained stories by rotating teams of superstar artists and writers, often set in Batman’s early years, which enabled the creative teams to take a fresh look at some crusty old villains. This new digital first book is resurrecting both the name of that former series, and also the rotating creative team approach,...

When it comes to over-sized special edition comics, DC seemingly can’t wait to whip up a steady stream of one after another. That’s not a complaint, mind you, just an observation. These 80 Page Giants must be good-sellers for DC, and although nearly 10 dollars a go, they are good value for the reader. You get to see a whole load of creators jamming together on more characters than you can shake a stick at, and the odds are that you will enjoy the majority of the stories, if not all. DC do enjoy their themed specials as well, and I must admit to being a sucker for things like Halloween and Christmas specials down the years, and I’m no different now. This Special gives us 10 short and hopefully sweet peeks into the more mysterious corners of the DC Universe,...

The finale to Elvira: Mistress of the Dark is here and has two sides. We are happy to read the conclusion in issue #12 to this very well-written/illustrated series, but sad to see the Mistress of the Dark's adventures end in this comic's run. Also in today's Comics Corner: the first issue (of two) of Hellboy and the Bprd: The Return of Effie Kolb, as well as Death to the Army of Darkness #1 and Blade Runner 2019 #6.
*Recommended* Elvira: Mistress of the Dark #12: "(W) David Avallone (A) Dave Acosta (CA) Tom Mandrake

Lights! Camera! Action! This week I am talking movie tie ins and movie adaptation comics.
In the old days the show was firmly on the other foot when it came to comics and movies. A big summer blockbuster would be released and behind the scenes the comics publishers would be battling it out to land the rights to continue the adventures in the four colour format. I actually got into comics via a movie tie in. The glamorous version of events I tell people is the X-Men movie got me to go to a Forbidden Planet and Wolverine #157-160 were my first comics but in fact it started the summer before that with an X-Men movie comic. You hear stories of people like Kevin Smith and most current comic creator who were collecting in the mid 80′s to early 90′s saying they left comics behind when they hit puberty. Well...

Margot Robbie ("Once Upon A Time In Hollywood") reprises her role as DC Comics' 'Harley Quinn' in director Cathy Yan's R-rated feature "Birds of Prey", written by Christian Hodson, co-starring Jurnee Smollet-Bell as 'Black Canary', Mary Elizabeth Winstead as 'Huntress', Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya and Ewan McGregor ("Trainspotting") as 'Black Mask', targeting a February 7, 2020 theatrical release:

Last month is was rumored that Ewan McGregor was up for the villainous role of Black Mask in the Harley Quinn spinoff film Birds of Prey. Well according to a recent report it looks like that is going to be the case!
The Black Mask character was created by Doug Moench and Tom Mandrake, and he made his first appearance in 1985’s Batman issue #386. The Black Mask is an insane and sadistic kingpin in Gotham City’s criminal underworld who has a fixation with masks.
In DC Comics Black Mask is the criminal alias of Roman Sionis, who murdered his wealthy, status-obsessed parents to take control of the family corporation, then lost everything when he proved to be a terrible businessman. Seeking revenge on the people he blamed for his own failures — particularly Bruce Wayne and Wayne Enterprises — he returns, hidden behind an ebony black mask, at the head of...

This exclusive preview of Nightwing/Magilla Gorilla is surprising in every way.
With Halloween fast approaching, we're due for another round of the shockingly good DC/Hanna Barbera crossovers, and DC sent us an exclusive preview of Nightwing/Magilla Gorilla from Heath Corson (from the also-shockingly good Bizarro) and Tom Grummett (Superboy).
We've already had a number of insanely good comics from DC's Hanna Barbera line - both individual series like Snagglepuss and The Flintstones, and from crossovers like Black Lightning/Hong Kong Phooey. And while it's astonishing that any of these premises came out good at all, it's even more incredible that they continue to be good.
Magilla Gorilla was a flimsy 60s premise about a gorilla who Mr. Peebles can't sell. That's...about it. It was the same joke over and over again, with no actual gags outside of your typical thin early-tv sitcom repetitions and fourth wall breaking.

Bruce Campbell’s movie characters Ash Williams and Elvis Presley will come face to face in a awesomely crazy new crossover comic book series called Army of Darkness/Bubba Ho-Tep!
I love that comics will have fun telling wild crossover stories like this, but it also makes me sad that no one will ever try to bring it to life in movie form.
In Army of Darkness/Bubba Ho-Tep, “Ash embarks on a soul-searching road trip to Texas on a hunch that Elvis Presley may still be alive and kicking (and supposedly vanquished a mummy)! What follows is a series of universe-spanning events that involve an Elvis jumpsuit with special time-travel abilities, a trip to 70’s Vegas, plus the reveal of an evil new Book of the Dead, the Necronomicon Ho-Tep.”

I love that comics will have fun telling wild crossover stories like this, but it also makes me sad that no one will ever try to bring it to life in movie form.

Yesterday we learned that Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) and Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Friday Night Lights) will being joining Margot Robbie in DC’s Birds of Prey film as Huntress, Black Canary, and Harley Quinn.
Now were learning that Ewan McGregor and Sharlto Copley are up for the role of the villain Black Mask in the movie. These are both great actors and I’d be happy to see either one of them cast in the role. I think Copley would definitely play the character a little crazier though. I think he might be the better fit.
Still have Renee Montoya and Cassandra Cain's roles to cast as well as the crime lord up against the team. Hearing names like Sharlto and Ewan McGreggor are actors they like for the role but have only started meeting actors for that part https://t.co/OaVfpTfkyM

A rumored synopsis has surfaced for DC's upcoming Bird of Prey film and it offers us a little insight into the team's mission and gives us an update on the state of Joker and Harley Quinn's relationship. The following comes from Discussing Film:
After splitting up with The Joker, Harley Quinn and three other female superheroes – Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya – come together to save the life of a little girl (Cassandra Cain) from an evil crime lord."
If this is true, I like the direction that it's headed. It's interesting that they may be making Cassandra Cain a little girl in the film. Makes me wonder if she will be the version of Batgirl that the studio ends up focusing on with the upcoming solo film. For those of you who want a little refresher on who these characters are, here's a breakdown:
Black Canary, aka Dinah Laurel,...

Gotham City mob boss and Batman foe Black Mask will make his big screen debut as the villain in ‘Birds of Prey, TheWrap has exclusively learned.

Ewan McGregor will play Black Mask in the upcoming Birds of Prey movie. Here are the details...
The Birds of Prey superhero team-up movie that will bring Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya to the big screen, along with Margot Robbie's excellent Harley Quinn, has cast its main villain. According to Deadline, Ewan McGregor will play Black Mask, one of Gotham's most sadistic crime lords.
The sadistic, mask-obsessed villain, whose real name is Roman Sionis, is the leader of a gang called the False Face Society. He was created by Doug Moench and Tom Mandrake and debuted in 1985's Batman #386. Black Mask has since solidified himself as a formidable opponent to Batman and his extended family, especially Catwoman, who has feuded with the villain several times over the years. His inclusion in Birds of Prey sets up a pretty brutal movie, to say the least.

I managed to miss this when it first came out, in individual issues, so am pleased to see the collection arrive so I can finally give it a read. I’m probably an easy sell, as I’m a fan of both writer Dan Abnett and artist Tom Mandrake, mostly for their work at Marvel and DC. I’d count myself a casual Hammer Films fan, no expert but I like most of them and can remember seeing Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter tucked away late on BBC2 one night. Being honest, I can’t remember a lot about the film, but one thing did stick. Captain Kronos was a bit different for Hammer. He was, in essence, an action hero. Sure, being Hammer you had all the supernatural trappings, but Kronos was definitely a man of action.

Captain Kronos – like the film – chronicles the adventures of the mysterious and powerful Kronos who has dedicated his life to destroying the evil vampire plague. Once a victim himself, the debonair Hunter knows the vampire’s strengths and weaknesses as well as the dangers of confronting the potent forces of darkness.
Based on the 1974 film, Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter is the second Hammer title from Titan Comics following the success of the awesome The Mummy: Palimpsest (from Peter Milligan and Ronilson Freire). However unlike other Hammer franchises, Captain Kronos was very much about the heroics of its titular character – and this new book very much follows suit, making it different in many ways from what audiences might expect from a Hammer comic.
The art in this book reminded me very much of the classic, and controversial, British...

With all the stupid that has recently infected our news feeds and such this past week, I’d be remiss to admit I didn’t at least try to find something comic-related to rant about today. I read about half of John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake’s Kros: Hallowed Ground graphic novel – but wouldn’t have anything cathartic to say about it as I’m numb from the dumb. I learned how to make my own salad dressing – but I doubt you’d really care about it or Whole 30. I read all the articles about how Justice League was getting some nifty reshoots to fix errant tonal problems – but again I digress: why sit here and rant about a movie that isn’t out yet, when our glorious leader took to the press and created a new villain for our weary nation!
I won’t regurgitate the circumstances that led...

So, Bill Maher crossed the line and got himself into hot water. Given the nature of his HBO show, Real Time, and his own proclivities as a satirist, maybe he should just have a hot tub on stage instead of a desk. It would suit him in many ways.
Recently, as part of an interview, Maher jokingly referred to himself as a “house ‘N’ word.” No, I’m not repeating the actual word here for a few reasons. A) I don’t want to pull a Maher; B) I don’t like the word. I won’t pretend I’ve never used it; I threw it around a bit as a kid in 1950s Chicago along with the “c” word, the “f” word, the “mf” and others of that ilk because I knew they were bad words, naughty words, and I was trying at those moments to pass myself off...

More than once over the years I’ve been approached by someone who says that they have a great idea for a story and that I should write it and then we split any money evenly. The problem with this (aside from the fact that the work is not even) is that I have plenty of ideas of my own that, for one reason or another, never get written. Having ideas isn’t the problem; executing them is.
Here are a few ideas I’ve had in my journal that haven’t seen the light of day.
Spectre/Batman Alt Worlds
An alternate DC Universe idea set back in the Thirties, we start with the Waynes getting gunned down in an alley, but this time young Bruce is killed as well. This sets off such a furor that something has to be done. Commissioner Gordon decides on someone from the...

Completing the trifecta of John Ostrander related items suitable for putting under the Christmas tree, today we have the Suicide Squad movie now out on DVD, Blu-Ray, and assorted other platforms that I don’t understand. The movie came out in August and now, just in time for Christmas, it’s out for your home theater.
This may be a trickier recommendation than my previous two because, although the movie did very well in the theaters, not everyone was a fan. In fact, some hated it. Me, I loved it – but I admit to a slight bias.
The version I got was the extended version with the bells and whistles – extended scenes and bonus features (which I’ll get to in a minute). I’m not always crazy about extended scenes or deleted scenes; more often than not I can see why they were cut. Although there was a scene...

Last weekend I was at the Geek’d Con in Rockford, Illinois. It was a small first time con and it had some things to work out, but over all it went okay.
I really enjoyed the fans but, for me, the big moment was when my niece, Julie Adams, showed up with her husband Rob and their three kids, Rachel, Hailey, and Ryan. They even sat in on the Q&A panel I did on Saturday and, bless ‘em, asked some questions themselves. And, as is typical with kids and especially kids who are relatives, a question or two were tough to answer.
The big one I was asked (by Hailey, as I recall) was, “Which of your characters is your favorite?” Deceptively simple, that question. “That’s like asking a parent which is their favorite child,” I replied, glancing at Julie and Rob. Both grimaced.
