Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is to be adapted into a television series.
The series, inspired by the popular Judi Barrett books, will be set before the events of the 2009 animated film of the same name and its 2013 sequel, both of which performed well at the box office.
Sony Pictures Animation and Dhx Media will produce 26 episodes of the traditionally animated series, each of them 22 minutes long.
The series will focus on high-schooler Flint Lockwood, who is frustrated with his life in the town of Swallow Falls. Flint, whose town is driven by sardine fishing, suffers from Nfd: Non Fish-related Dreams.
Flint hopes to be a serious scientist and teams up with new girl Sam Sparks, who dreams of being a reporter. The pair will have a series of adventures with the best known characters from the films.

Chicago – I was paying attention to the movie. Correction: I was mostly paying attention to the movie. It was challenging to ignore my angry, empty stomach and fully enjoy the food coma that is “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2”.
Just don’t make the same mistake I did and eat first.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
To justify a sequel, a mostly new filmmaking team converted inanimate food that rained from the sky to living, breathing and speaking “foodimals”.
The star of the foodimals? Barry the strawberry, who turns out to be the star of the film. Like his fellow foodimals, Barry is an ambulatory chunk of food spawned from an invention that goes by the mumbled name “Fldsmdfr”. In the sequel, the Fldsmdfr has been popping out food on the island of Swallow Falls since the first film.

The first film was hysterical, and whether the sequel to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs will retain that originality, remains to be seen. I'm game, especially with the "There's a leak in the boat scene." Priceless. Starring in the film, along with who they're credited as, are Bill Hader (Flint Lockwood), Anna Faris (Sam Sparks), James Caan (Tim Lockwood), Will Forte (Chester V), Kristen Schaal (Barb), Terry Crews (Earl), Andy Samberg (Brent), Neil Patrick Harris (Steve) and Benjamin Bratt (Manny). Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn direct the film scripted by John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein and Erica Rivinoja, based on the characters created by Judi Barrett and Ron Barrett.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 picks up where Sony Pictures Animation’s mouth-watering comedy left off. Inventor Flint Lockwood thought he saved the world when he destroyed his most infamous invention — a machine that turned water into food causing cheeseburger rain and spaghetti tornadoes. But Flint soon learns that his invention survived and is now creating food-animals – “foodimals!” Flint and his friends embark on a dangerously delicious mission to battle hungry tacodiles, shrimpanzees, hippotatomuses, cheespiders and other foodimals to save the world – again!

"This is James Caan's character Tim Lockwood being chased by our food animals known as the BananaOstrich." Well, you just sold me a ticket, "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2." The first "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs" was one of those lovely little animation surprises, where something came together beautifully. Phil Lord and Chris Miller took the lovely but simple book by Judi Barrett and Ron Barrett and turned it into a very fast-paced and sincere bit of animated surreality, full of wonderful goofball gags and a very sweet and sunny disposition. The first film ended with a victory...

This past summer, we reported to you that the sequel to Sony Pictures Animation, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs would employ Horrible Bosses writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. The story for the sequel in fact not follow Ron and Judi Barrett’s follow-up children’s book, Pickles to Pittsburgh. Instead, this film is to be “based on an original idea.”
According to Variety, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 will be directed by a team of Sony Animation’s own artists, Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn, both of which had worked on the first film. Cameron was a story artist and Pearn was head of story. Phil Lord and Chris Miller who directed the original, will be executive producing.
Meatballs 2 has not officially received a greenlight yet but they have veteran Sony Animation producer Kirk Bodyfelt working on this project’s development.

Sony Pictures Animation has hired Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn to direct the sequel to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Chris Miller and Phil Lord directed the first film, but have since moved on to directing live-action movie like 21 Jump Street.
This will be Cameron and Pearn's first feature film directing gig, but they are both artists who worked on the first film for Sony. So they're familiar with the the territory. There's no information on what the story will be about, the movie hasn't even been officially greenlit yet, but I'm sure it will eventually happen.
I really enjoyed the first film, and I would love it if the sequel ended up being just as good and entertaining. I guess we'll see if Cameron and Pearn has what it takes to helm a movie.

Sony Pictures Animation is working on a sequel to 2009’s Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs. This animated success looks to rival Pixar with this new sequel. Though it is reportedly early in the development stages, it has just gotten a swift kick in the pants!

This sequel will depart from the source material of the first film and not continue with Ron and Judi Barrett’s follow-up children’s book, Pickles to Pittsburgh. Word is that the producers for the film will employ a different director on this sequel instead of re-enlisting Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

The release of Horrible Bosses this weekend has already helped out members of its writing team, as 24Frames says that both John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have been hired by Sony to write the sequel to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, their animated hit from 2009.
With voices from Bill Hader and Anna Faris, the original was directed by Phil Lord & Chris Miller, but they are said to be leaving the sequel behind in favor of other projects. The person being sought now is someone “who had worked in a lower-profile capacity developing the story for the original.” And even though the first was based on a kid’s book by Ron and Judi Barrett, this will go off of an original idea. A shame, because the sequel book was called Pickles to Pittsburgh; that’s a tag I would’ve like to see on this site.

Couple of bits of info on upcoming sequels for you today. First up, Brent Spiner, who played Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation and in several movies that followed, might like to appear in the upcoming Star Trek sequel currently being written by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and J.J. Abrams. Emphasis on 'might,' however. In an online chat [1] to promote his new series Fresh Hell, the actor joked about a possible role in the Trek sequel: I am thinking more about the next Star Trek movie and more about who can I be in it. I did this character Arik Soong [on Star Trek Enterprise], not to be confused with Dr. Soong on the [Tng], this was his predecessor. And I would like to start a campaign, maybe right here tonight, its called Bbs – Bring Back Soong. And I want you to flood Jj Abrams offices with that: Bbs, Bring Back Soong.

A sequel to Sony Pictures Animation's 2009's Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is pushing forward with the help of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Horrible Bosses), who have signed on to draft a new script. The initial box office hit was loosely based on 1970s children's book of the same title written by Ron and Judi Barrett. In an odd move, the sequel will be based on the original book and not the Barretts' follow-up book, Pickles to Pittsburgh.
The La Times reports that Phil Lord and Chris Miller will not return to direct the sequel. The producers are said to be seeking a new director that has worked in a lower-profile capacity developing the story for the original. The first film was about "an inventor named Flint Lockwood and a nerdy weather forecaster in the fantasy town of Chewandswallow, which comes under threat when food begins falling...

I'm pissed at myself for missing "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs" while it was in theaters. Kicking myself, even. When "Cloudy" finally made it to VOD, I put it in the home theater queue and relaxed to soak it in during a scare free 90 minutes some listless, rainy weekend. And I got sucked in. Usually I can work a bit while watching movies, because most films don't have a plot that requires you to pay attention. This one doesn't have the type of plot you need to pay attention to, but its charm was enough to suck me in. Before I knew it, the movie was over (I did re-wind to watch some scenes with Mr. T's police officer a second time).I couldn't be more excited that "Pickles to Pittsburgh," the sequel written by Judi Barrett, is in development to be a CGI sequel. What I'm less excited...

It's not even out yet, but if successful then Ridley Scott's upcoming "Robin Hood" at Universal Pictures could get the sequel treatment.
Scott tells The Times Online that as this is essentially an origin movie, we really don't see Robin in full flight until the last act. Scott says the film "is the beginnings of how the man becomes known as Robin the Hood. You don’t really get that until the last few minutes. When you realise that ‘Ah, this is who he is’. Let’s say we might presume there’s a sequel."
So if one were to be made, what would it be about? “Honestly, I thought why not have the potential for a sequel, particularly if it is a genre that you absolutely love and has never been fully explored? If there were to be a sequel to Robin Hood, you would have a constant enemy throughout,...

Brewer Directing Footloose, Crawford Bails: I have a hard time believing the departure of Chace Crawford and the attachment of Craig Brewer as director for the forthcoming Footloose remake is merely coincidental, then again I never thought I'd see Brewer going from Hustle and Flow to Black Snake Moan only to end up directing a remake of a Kevin Bacon '80s dance flick that once had Kenny Ortega attached to direct. So who knows, maybe it is coincidence. Paramount has said casting a new lead will begin immediately with production expected to begin this summer. [Variety]

Good news! After a rumor hit last week that a sequel to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was in the works, io9 has confirmed that it's already in production. However, they also report that directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller won't be back to direct, but will be staying on creatively and helping write the story. As was unveiled last week, the title will be Pickles to Pittsburgh which comes from the second children's book in Ron and Judi Barrett's series. There is no other confirmation about actors or anything else, but at least it's currently in development. I loved Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and I'm very excited for this sequel. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
The latest in crazy adventure movies, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs offers a world where weather becomes food, where snowball fights morph into ice cream battles. In his review, Todd Gilchrist wrote: "co-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have adapted Ron and Judi Barrett's kids book into a true larger-than-life tale, creating a world that scarcely resembles anything that could or would happen, and manages to be all the more exciting because of it." Buy it on Blu-ray or DVD.

"Up's" marathon foreign rollout suddenly turned into a sprint over the weekend as the Pixar/Disney animation title in 3D took the No. 1 spot for the first time this year with a boxoffice tally of $14.7 million from 3,151 locations in 23 countries.
Although in offshore release since May 29, "Up" had mostly ranked towards the middle of the pack each round thanks to its graduated foreign distribution pattern spaced over seven months in order to capitalize on school holidays and other local factors worldwide.
"Up's" total overseas take stands at nearly $200 million ($197.4 million) with a slew of key foreign markets -- including Italy, the U.K., all of Scandinavia, the Benelux countries, Turkey and Poland -- to play before its foreign run ends Dec. 5 in Japan. These territories are expected to add at least another 40% to 50% of the current take in foreign boxoffice.

The classic children's book "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" spins a tall, tasty tale about a mythical land in which the sky rains orange juice and storms hamburgers, while every so often a pea-soup fog rolls in.
The how and why of this culinary weather — the meat and potatoes of the story, if you will — is never explained in Judi Barrett's slim 1978 book. All we know is that the deliciousness turns suddenly dangerous for the townsfolk of Chewandswallow — massive school flattening pancakes! Salt and pepper winds! — and they're forced into survival mode.
The new 3-D animated adaptation of "Cloudy" dreams up an origin story for the mouthwatering climate — a loony young inventor named Flint Lockwood creates a machine that turns water into food — but...

Since its earliest days of development, the value of most computer animation was judged by how accurately it represented or substituted for reality: are skin tones believable, are textures authentic, is motion natural or smooth? But at least as far as animated movies are concerned, many (including lots of audience members) have forgotten that many of the medium's best examples were ones where abstraction and exaggeration were a big part (if not the biggest) of their artistry; notwithstanding feature-length classics like Snow White or Dumbo, filmmakers like Chuck Jones and Tex Avery entertained audiences by expanding their imaginations with punch lines, characters and even worlds that were anything but realistic.

Director(s): Phil Lord, Chris Miller Writer(s): Judi Barrett and Ron Barrett (book) Phil Lord and Chris Miller (screenplay) Starring: Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Neil Patrick Harris, Mr. T, Bruce Campbell, Andy Samberg, Benjamin Bratt The town of Swallow Falls processes sardines-that’s all it does. It’s a drag for a young, budding scientist like Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader), so he invents stuff to keep his mind off the general dreariness of the situation. None of his inventions are particularly practical, one being a device that makes food out of water. His dad is less than enthused with Flint’s dream, and instead urges him to work at the family’s sardine bait and tackle shop. But Flint will have none of it, and decides to test his experiment during the grand opening of the town’s sardine theme park. Meanwhile, Sam Sparks (Anna Faris...

If you’re worried because the highly stylized animation of the new big-screen 3D adaptation of the beloved children’s book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs doesn’t look much like the lovely pencil sketches Ron Barrett created for Judi Barrett’s gentle prose in their 1978 book... Well, you’re not wrong: the movie, written and directed by feature newcomers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, looks very different. And in some ways, it feels very different, too: there’s a lot more story required for a 90-minute film than a kiddie picture book demands. But it feels just the same in the all the important ways, though I say that as someone who had never even heard of the book [Amazon U.S.] [Amazon U.K.] before the movie entered my radar, and who only read it recently, after I’d seen the film and, obviously, as an adult. An adult who loves fantasy and loves meatballs,...

As a tadpole I was at a loss to understand why so many of my peers gained satisfaction from playing with their food. There was always someone who delighted in sticking a piece of wham bar to the wall or mashing their ice cream so those tantalising glaciered domes were turned into putrid sludge. Even today, watching a child eviscerating their nosh makes me nauseous but it obviously strikes a cord with some of our young and so here’s an animation that simultaneously taps into that childhood predilection for playful consumption while reminding both kids and adults that we’ve all got to eat responsibly and keep waste to a minimum. That’s having your cake and eating it you say? Well I say, do you mind – I’LL do the food metaphors thank you very much.

In part two of our interview with Judi & Ron Barrett (part one can be found here), the married couple chat about how long it took to write and illustrate Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, how long it took for the film to reach the screen, the importance of both books and, of course, good food!
Published in 1978, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs is a mere 32 pages, but that doesn’t reflect on the amount of time and effort it took to complete the project. “It’s hard to say [how long it took], because I didn’t sit and just write every day,” Judy observes. “Cloudy probably took well over a year.”
“It took about a year to draw,” Ron adds. “I didn’t do anything else but draw every day for a year.”
“But [from its inception to its publication], the book was about two-and-a-half years in the making,” Judi says.
The Barretts still have the book’s original drawings.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs is a beloved children’s book classic that was first published in 1978 and has since gone on to sell more than three million copies. Written by Judi Barrett and illustrated by her husband Ron, Cloudy concerns the town of Chewandswallow, where the weather comes three times a day: at breakfast, lunch and dinner. That’s when food falls from the sky, and that’s what all of the residents eat. But then the weather takes a turn for the worse, and the food portions become larger and larger… That’s the basic premise of the book, which has now been turned into a 3-D animated film from Sony Pictures Animation, due out September 18. Starlog recently attended a Cloudy press junket held at, most appropriately, Dylan’s Candy Bar in NYC. While chewing on caramels, munching on peanut butter cups and burning my cheeks with fireballs,...

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, based on the book by Judi Barrett and Ron Barrett [Amazon U.S.] [Amazon U.K.], opens next week. Spike Jonze’s take on Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are [Amazon U.S.] [Amazon U.K.] is coming soon. Movies based on children’s books are nothing new, but most of them are based on chapter books -- movies based on what are essentially picture books are much rarer. Maybe we need more of them: Goodnight Moon: The Movie, anyone? What children’s picture book would you most like to see made into a film?...

With “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”, Sony Pictures Animation’s mouth-watering 3-D animated event, about to hit theatres worldwide, the world’s largest meatball ever created has also descended. The announcement was made today by Hannah Minghella, president of production for Sony Pictures Animation, Inc., and Carlos Martinez, adjudicator, Guinness World Records.
The meatball, weighing in at 49.5 kg, or 109 lbs, was cooked up by the chefs at The Ritz Carlton in Cancún, Mexico, to promote the upcoming animated film, in which a budding inventor causes food to fall from the sky like rain. The Hotel’s Executive chef Rainer Zinngrebe along with banquet chef Aldo Novoa accomplished the appetizing feat, surpassing a previous record set in 2008 that stood at 32.93 kg, or 72 lbs., 9 oz. The new record was confirmed by Martinez, and after the record was confirmed, the meatball was cut up into normal-sized portions and served to everyone at the record-setting event.

In an interview with MTV Hollywood Crush during the event, Faris admitted that she is one of the fans of Robert Pattinson's "Twilight".

However, "The House Bunny" actress soon changed her tune when knowing that Johnny Depp would appear at the show to promote his upcoming flick "Alice in Wonderland". "That's the one. Nevermind that Sony's upcoming animated film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (watch the trailer if you haven't yet) bears little resemblance to its beloved source material - Judi Barrett's children's book. Considering my attitude towards the redundancy of adapted films like Frank Miller's Sin City and Zack Snyder's Watchmen, I can't rightly complain that the plot of this adaptation is not exactly as Judi Barrett wrote it nor that it doesn't look anything like Ron Barrett's illustrations. What I can rightly complain about, however, is that the movie will not be presented appropriately in Smell-o-Vision like it should be. For those of you who don't remember, Smell-o-Vision is an old cinema gimmick, kind of like 3D. But instead of bombarding you with the illusion of pop-out images, it bombards you with odors that are relevant to what's onscreen. For example, for the one and only official Smell-o-Vision release,...
