Mark Wahlberg shines in a crazy crime caper about bumbling bodybuilders hellbent on kidnap and personal growth
There's something inspired about putting Michael Bay in charge of a brazen action-comedy about gym-pumped knuckleheads who screw up their own criminal masterplan most royally. Bay is Hollywood's biggest alpha-bull; this time he gallops through the china shop to entertaining effect. Pain & Gain is too long, and sometimes behaves as if it doesn't get the point of its own comedy, but there's plenty of zing. The story itself reads like something Florida thriller-writer Carl Hiaasen might have dreamed up; actually this is a true-crime case, based on an article by Miami New Times journalist Pete Collins. It's a tale from the roaring 1990s, and shot in an archly 90s pulp-fiction style. Mark Wahlberg is Daniel Lugo, a preening Florida bodybuilder, personal trainer and former conman obsessed with motivational fitness and realising the American dream by getting rich quick.

"Are you kidding me?" Tony Shalhoub laughs, sitting in his hotel suite in Miami. "I thought 'Honest to God,'Is this a joke? This cannot be real. It just can't be." Veteran actor Tony Shalhoub is recalling the first time high-profile director Michael Bay told him about his upcoming film Pain and Gain, based on a true story about the Sun Gym gang who committed grisly crimes in Miami in the mid 1990s. Bay wanted Shalhoub to play the part of Victor Kershaw, a businessman who has something Daniel Lugo (played by Mark Wahlberg) and the rest of his gang members want - cash, and plenty of it. "After I knew I was doing the film, I started to read about it and I kept on having to ask, 'Wait a minute, is this really true or are we just saying it's true?' I couldn't wrap my brain around it,...

Michael Bay’s Pain and Gain topped the box office across the Atlantic earlier this year, and now it’s set to do the same when it lands here in the UK next month.
I’ve been eagerly looking forward to this one for what feels like forever, with its release date on our shores pushed back from early May to the end of August, presumably to give it some distance from Iron Man 3, which would have opened a week before it on our shores in the spring.
With August now fast approaching, Paramount have sent over the new UK poster, along with a red-band clip, giving us a great look at what promises to be an instant favourite performance from Mark Wahlberg.

Michael Bay goes back to smaller movies with Pain & Gain, starring Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg. Review here...
Daniel Lugo (Mark Wahlberg) is a guy with simple dreams. One of these dreams is to maximise his body's potential via weightlifting and training. The other is to be filthy, stinking rich. To that end, after spending time in prison after running an investment scam, Lugo's first legitimate post-prison job is at Sun Gym, where he turns the struggling gym of John Mese (Rob Corddry) into a weightlifting mecca with free body waxing and free memberships for strippers.
Turning a gym around is all well and good, but that's not enough for Lugo and his friend Adrian Doorbal (Anthony Mackie), a fellow bodybuilder who is feeling the repercussions of years of steroid abuse. To treat his erectile dysfunction, he needs money. Lugo needs money, too. Fortunately,...

Full disclosure, I thought Pain & Gain was going to be a comedy or, at the very least, peppered with humor more often than not. It isn't. It's a tragedy. The focus is on dumb people doing dumb things and it's largely impossible to enjoy because it's based on a true story of people who kidnapped, tortured, robbed and murdered people told through the glossy, oversaturated lens of Michael Bay. While I've never been one to participate in "Bay bashing", if there was ever an example of the man not understanding drama this is it. Loaded with all the faux machismo, homophobia, misogyny, racism and flag-waving we've come to expect from Bay, Pain & Gain is presented in his traditional slick and glossy fashion, which would seem to suggest we're in for a rip-roaring good time with a trio of bonehead body builders looking for a quick buck. And, at the very least,...

What burns me up about Pain & Gain is that the trailer, and even the excerpts shown on TV, make it look like fun. It is fun, for a while, an irreverent crime yarn filmed in Michael Bay’s signature adrenaline-junkie style. Then it turns ugly—uglier than you can imagine. Bay has said that when he read the screenplay he envisioned a cross between Fargo and Pulp Fiction; perhaps he didn’t consider the fact that those two fine films are so wildly different in tone and ambition that a mash-up wouldn’t be a good idea. Freely interpreted from real-life events, as reported by journalist Pete Collins, this latest Hollywood version of a “true story” by Christopher Markus and Stephen...

This weekend, Michael Bay will try to erase the sting of "Armageddon" with the true-crime feature "Pain & Gain." Personally, I've never met a Bay film I haven't liked (well, maybe Pearl Harbor), so I couldn't be more psyched for this movie, which centers on three Florida bodybuilders—Daniel Lugo, Adrian Doorbal, and Paul Doyle—who turned to a life of crime in the mid-90s. The true story is more bizarre then the film itself, so I highly suggest you check out Pete Collins' lengthy exposé in the Miami New Times. But for those of you who don't have the time, check out some highlights from the article below.
1) The gym's core clientele initially consisted of "cops and bad guys": Which was problematic for obvious reasons. One police officer quipped that he could "meet my monthly quota of felony arrests in one night at the...

Before watching Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain, I highly suggest reading the 3-part Miami New Times article on which it is based (conveniently compiled at this link). Such prior knowledge is in no way required to enjoy Bay’s film adaptation, but having read the original, factual account, I found myself constantly fascinated by the choices Bay and company made bringing the story to the screen. It is not the literal details of the crime that intrigue me – the film is actually a much closer approximation of the truth than I would have ever imagined – but the overall tone struck, and the thematic and character decisions made. Bay has taken a dark, disturbingly outlandish tale of greed, extortion, selfishness, and human depravity, and turned it into a broad, black, increasingly out-of-control comedy about the absurdity of the ‘American Dream,’ all without misrepresenting (most of) the fundamental facts of the incident.

The Alamo Drafthouse and Tough Guy Cinema are giving credit where tough guy credit is due and honoring Michael Bay as their first inductee into the Alamo Drafthouse Tough Guy Hall of Fame as part of the “Baymageddon” event this Sunday, April 21, at Alamo Drafthouse locations in Austin and Houston, TX, Kansas City, Mo, and Littleton, Co. “Baymageddon” features a mystery marathon of three Michael Bay classic action blockbusters plus regional premieres of his new film Pain & Gain, in theaters nationwide April 26th.
Michael Bay is a true visionary. He provides uncompromising, unadulterated, and unapologetic fun to the masses. But, he’s more than just a blockbuster filmmaker. To say that would be to dismiss the absolutely awe-inspiring things he achieves with the medium of film. Bay transports and transfixes us with his very unique vision and a style that grabs hold of us at 180 mph and demands our attention.

If you’re anything like us, you’re getting pretty excited for Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain. It looks like Bay is finally getting back to the fun movies we want to see him make (and staying away from Shia Labeouf in the process). The film explodes its way into theaters in a couple weeks, and to help tide you over until then, a bunch of new still from the film have hit the web.
A lot of these new images are simply stills from the trailers, so there isn’t anything revolutionary new or revealing, but we do get to see a jacked Mark Wahlberg, an insanely buff Dwayne Johnson, and a lot of scantily clad, beautiful women, so I’m okay with the fact we’ve seen most of this stuff already.

“Pain and Gain,” “Transformers” director Michael Bay's new low-budget crime movie starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson, looks like it could be one of the sleeper hits of the spring. The trailers promise a wild, darkly tinged comedy about some Florida bodybuilders who decide to get into seedy criminal activity. But what isn't so clear is that “Pain and Gain” is based on a real life incident and the victims of those crimes aren't particularly happy with their goofy Hollywood reenactment. “Pain and Gain” is based on a series of 1999 Miami New Times articles by Pete Collins, detailing the misadventures of the Sun Gym gang, whose eventual criminal activities led to murder. (The Mark Wahlberg and Anthony Mackie characters are currently sitting on death row in Florida.) Both police investigators privy to the case and family members of the victims are speaking out against the movie, (which, it should be noted,...

MichaelBay’s Pain and Gain is definitely one of the must-see movies of the season. The latest trailer for Michael Bay's "Pain & Gain" has arrived, and it's absolutely hilarious. Though Dwayne Johnson's character Paul Doyle, Mark Wahlberg's Daniel Lugo and Anthony Mackie's Adrian Doorbal aren't considered heroes in real life, they definitely look like they will be in the movie based on what we've seen this red band trailer.
The video is for ages 17 and up because of some swearing, violence and a severed toe. It's also much more comedic than the previous "Pain & Gain" trailers released. The use of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' song "Thrift Shop" helps with that, but the new scenes of Rebel Wilson and Ken Jeong make it seem like "Pain & Gain" could be as much a comedy as it is an action movie.

Yahoo! has a new redband trailer for Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

I actually prefer the first trailer to this one, despite it being redband.
The opening in this redband trailer doesn’t draw me in as much and Macklemore’s song “Thift Shop” feels out of place.
The late scene at the end of the first trailer where The Rock is talking to Wahlberg when he’s getting a pump = funniest scene of the movie so far.

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
Spring gets a raw deal. This year it lasts from March 20 through June 20, yet we’ll be hearing about the summer movie season throughout May thanks to big films such as Iron Man 3, The Great Gatsby, Star Trek Into Darkness, Fast and Furious 6 and The Hangover Part III. (Spoiler alert: a couple of these are on the list!)
I will admit I was darn near heartbroken that Spring Breakers fell just outside the cutoff. If it hadn’t exploded into three theaters on wintry March 15, the trailer ensured I’d have hustled to get this list out last week (something I wasn’t compelled to do for Admission, The Croods, or Olympus Has Fallen). Thanks to the wide expansion, however, I was able to see – nay, experience – it on Friday. Harmony Korine transported me to this neon, Natty Ice-fueled American dream hellscape,...

This year, we get to see Michael Bay take to non-blockbuster territory with the release of Pain and Gain. He’s doing so with a blockbuster-sized cast, though, with an awesome leading trio in Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, and Anthony Mackie.
The first trailer landed just before Christmas last year, and if you weren’t looking forward to it before then, it definitely should have given you a nudge in the right direction.
With its release date fast approaching, Paramount have released a new TV spot for the film, set to the amazing tune of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ Thrift Shop (which has almost 190m. views on YouTube, at time of writing).

Sneak Peek footage from director Michael Bay's upcoming black comedy, "Pain & Gain", based on a true story.
Written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the film is based on a 1999 series of 'Miami New Times' articles by investigative journalist Pete Collins about "...a couple of Florida steroid-abusing knucklehead bodybuilders who become criminals involved in an extortion ring and a kidnapping plot that goes horribly wrong..."
"...'Daniel Lugo' (Mark Wahlberg) is a regular bodybuilder who works at the 'Sun Gym' along with his friend 'Adrian Doorbal' (Anthony Mackie). Sick of living the poor life Lugo concocts a plan to kidnap 'Victor Kershaw' (Tony Shalhoub), a regular at the gym and a rich spoiled business man, and extort him. With the help of recently released criminal Paul Doyle' (Dwayne Johnson), the 'Sun Gym Gang' successfully gets Kershaw to sign over all his finances, but when Kershaw survives an attempted murder,...

Here is another new TV spot from Michael Bay's Pain and Gain. The clip from Paramount focuses on highlighting that the movie is loosely based on true events. Just like every movie of this sort, I believe that there is more fiction than fact, but I am excited to see this regardless.

Pain & Gain marks a lot of milestones for Michael Bay. It’s his first movie since The Rock to cost under $100 million. It’s his first movie since 2005 that doesn’t feature cars turning into robots. But best of all, it’s his first movie in a long time that looks like it will actually be fun to watch.
The first trailer for the film was pretty awesome, and now a new TV spot has been released showing more of the same. This spot is a lot lighter on the plot side and heavier on the humor, while still showing a lot of muscled and bikini-clad flesh.
Mark Wahlberg attempts to settle Dwayne Johnson’s fears with the line “I’ve watched a lot of movies Paul, I know what I’m doing,” which is a feeling that any fan of action movies can relate to. Wahlberg also attempts to...

After seeing the trailer, I can safely say that this is one Michael Bay movie I am actually looking forward to seeing, because I really love the mix of comedy and action, and I like seeing Wahlberg and The Rock – I’m also curious as to how the two will play it out. Have a look for yourself:

Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, and Anthony Mackie make for a brilliant leading trio, and smart money says that their chemistry is going to be a lot of fun on screen in a few months’ time.
Paramount debuted an awesome first trailer and a new poster at the end of last year, and with its April Us release date on the horizon, the first TV spot has surfaced online.

Get out your protein shakes, the muscle-tastic trailer for Michael Bay's "Pain & Gain" has arrived. Based on Pete Collins's Miami New Times series, "Pain & Gain," Bay's professed "dark comedy," follows a pair of Floridian musclemen (Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson) who get mixed up in a doomed kidnapping. The movie has been gestating for years. Bay told MTV in 2009 -- when "Pain & Gain" was just a twinkle in his eye -- that he had hopes of doing a smaller production, which he described as "a 'Pulp Fiction'-type of movie." The film sees so many bulging biceps, sit ups, punches and muscle tees, it's more like "Pulp Fiction" on steroids. Take a look at the trailer above. "Pain & Gain" starring Wahlberg, Johnson, Anthony Mackie, Ed Harris, Rob Corddry and Tony Shalhoub hits theaters April 26.

The first trailer for Michael Bay's "Pain and Gain" makes the film look like an amalgam of "Bad Boys," "Out of Sight," "Boogie Nights" and the Hans & Frans "Saturday Night Live" sketch that Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon made famous in the '90s. In other words, [maniacal laugh goes here].
Based on a Miami New Times series by Pete Collins, "Pain and Gain" is about a pair of steroids-addled bodybuilders (Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson) who get caught up in a get-rich-quick kidnapping scheme that predictably spirals out of control.
"People I've shown it to, literally the first thing they say is, 'That is really original,'" Bay told HuffPost Entertainment. "A bunch of people have said that right off of the bat. So, whatever that means. Because when you direct it, you're kind of inside of it and it's hard to see it. It's quirky, it's funny, it's twisted -- but...

We’ve had one protein-powered teaser poster for Michael Bay’s new dark comedy crime caper Pain And Gain. Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson are the main selling points so it was only a matter of time until they were placed front and centre. Check out the new image below courtesy of Yahoo!. You’ve got to feel a little sorry for Wahlberg – he’s admirably bulked and toned here, but standing next to The Rock, even when he’s crouching, just makes anyone look a little less impressive.Pain features the duo as Florida bodybuilders who get embroiled in a web of kidnap and extortion that also drags in folks played by Anthony Mackie, Ed Harris, Ken Jeong, Tony Shalhoub, Rob Corddry and supermodel Bar Paly (because what’s a Bay film without a supermodel?)The story of the crime that goes badly wrong for all involved sounds a...

There are no robots in "Pain and Gain," which makes it unlike any Michael Bay film since "Bad Boys II" in 2003. (All right, maybe "The Island" didn't technically have robots, but clones count!) Based on a series of Miami New Times by Pete Collins, the film follows two steroid-addled body builders who get wrapped up in a kidnapping scheme.
Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson star in the film, which Bay has been angling to make for years. In 2009, he told MTV that "Pain and Gain" (which was then just a script he was hoping to develop) was "a 'Pulp Fiction'-type of movie." Bay described the film as a "dark comedy."
Paramount gave the "Transformers" director a reported budget of around $20 million to make "Pain and Gain. The studio has set April 26, 2013 as a release date for "Pain and Gain," putting it up against the recently moved romantic comedy "The Big Wedding.

Taking a well-earned break from shooting giant toy robots, the next film we'll see from Michael Bay will be the smaller-scale crime caper Pain And Gain. And look! Here's a poster, rather emphasising the "gain" part of that title. Approach dietary supplements with caution, kiddies.Pain And Gain, you'll be more than aware, stars Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson as Floridian body-builders who get embroiled in a dastardly web of kidnap and extortion. It may sound unlikely, but Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely's screenplay is actually based on a true story, adapted from Pete Collins' work in the Miami New Times. The ridiculously strong cast also includes Anthony Mackie, Ed Harris, Rob Corddry, Tony Shalhoub, Ken Jeong and Israeli supermodel Bar Paly. The just-announced release date sees Pain And Gain out in the States on April 26, so it expect it in the UK at some similar time in the Spring.
