In this era of bounteous streaming series, a steady stream of cinematically-released films, internet oddities and beyond, you’d be forgiven for thinking that nearly every story has, at this point, been told already. And then something comes along to remind you that there are still original ideas left in the world: like, what if there was a show in which a human woman was turned by a machine into a chicken nugget, leaving her father and an intern who has a crush on her to try and turn her back into a human? That sound you hear is Joseph Campbell’s brain exploding. This is the premise of a new Netflix series titled – you guessed it – Chicken Nugget, and it comes from South Korean writer-director Lee Byeong-heon. Check out the wild trailer here:
Well… there it is. Your standard woman-becomes-chicken-nugget show. It is – in a glorious turn of phrase...

"Moving" is a supernatural, live-action adaptation of a popular webtoon, directed by Park Inje, starring Ryu Seungryong, Han Hyojoo, Zo Insung, Lee Jungha, Go Younjung and Kim Dohoon, now streaming on Hulu:
"... in the 1990's, South Korea’s National Security Planning Agency established a black ops team of superpowered individuals. Tasked with carrying out classified missions, members of this elite unit used their powers to defend the country and achieve the impossible on a daily basis. Despite their successes, one day the team suddenly went dark, dispersing across the country, never to be heard from again.
" A few decades later, 'Bongseok', a boy who could float before he could walk and 'Huisoo', a girl who survived a horrific car crash unscathed, end up at the same school, quickly becoming close after confiding their secrets in each other and discovering there are more people like them out in the world.

Disney appears to be having a Squid Game moment.
The star-studded Korean spy series Moving has become Disney+ and Hulu’s most-watched K-drama ever — in the U.S. and globally — within just seven days of release. The show launched on Disney’s streaming services on Aug. 9 and has become the company’s most popular series in any language, based on hours streamed, across the Asia Pacific region, including in Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. That means viewers in Asia have already watched Moving more than Disney’s core franchise series like The Mandalorian. (Disney declined to share more precise viewership data.)
“The global consumer response towards the first 11 episodes of Moving has exceeded our expectations,” said Carol Choi, Disney’s executive vp of original content strategy in Apac. “From the U.S. to all across Apac, it is fast becoming a breakout hit with its captivating storyline,...

"It's nice to meet you, monster. I'm a monster, too." Oh, wow. Hulu has revealed an official US trailer with English subtitles for a Korean superpowers series called Moving. This was actually produced by Disney+ in Korea, similar to the extra crazy series Connect from last year. Based on the webtoon of the same name by Kang Full, the series is a supernatural drama that deals with three teenager high school students and their parents who discover their super powers. It's a play on superheroes, much closer to the X-Men series with its narrative, than anything in the MCU. These teens must conceal their superpowers to shelter their parents who have lived with painful secrets facing great danger over generations. Are the monsters? Or heroes? Who is coming after them now? The cast features Ryu Seung-ryong, Han Hyo-joo, Zo In-sung, Cha Tae-hyun, Ryoo Seung-bum, Kim Sung-kyun, Lee Jung-ha, Go Youn-jung,...

The success of “Extreme Job” upon its release was a surprise to most, its makers included. The unassuming action comedy, starring Ryu Seung-ryong, Lee Hanee and more, creeped up quietly and based off a strong word of mouth, went on to make history as the most financially successful Korean film of all time and the second most-attended domestic theatrical release ever in the country. On the back of its success, its director Lee Byeong-heon was able to have financed and produced “Dream”, a project that he had been wanting to make for nearly 10 years before the release of “Extreme Job”.

Based on one of the most important and famous naval battles in history, the feature benefitted from the legendary hero status of Admiral Yi Sun-shin, a man so revered and loved that he has a statue of himself in the center of Seoul. Following up such a successful production can be daunting for a person, but Kim Han-min went down a unique path to follow it up; he decided to do not one but two different features and do a full trilogy on Yi Sun-shin, with the second story coming in the form of “Hansan: Rising Dragon...

Films about the Joseon era had been among the most popular in S. Korea for years now, particularly through their combination of blockbuster production values and historic setting. This tendency found its apogee in “The Admiral”, a 2014 film based on the historical Battle of Myeongnyang, which recorded 10 million viewers in 12 days, setting a record for achieving 10 million viewers in the shortest amount of time, and in the process becoming the highest grossing film of all time in S. Korea, a place it still holds.
The story begins with the events leading to the naval battle, which, actually, became the duel between two men: Joseon admiral Yi Sun-sin and Kusushima Michifusa, whom Hideyoshi Toyotomi sent to Joseon to take over the navy. In the beginning of the film, both men have a number of issues to deal with. Yi Sun-sin has been just released from prison after the disaster at Chilcheollyang,...

For 10 years, Five Flavours Film Festival has been presenting the best cinema from Asia, its meanings and contexts. Initially, the Festival focused solely on Vietnamese films, but it evolved to become a yearly review of the cinema of East and Southeast Asia, the only such event in the country.
The 10th edition is held in Warsaw, on November 16-23 (Muranów and Kinoteka cinemas), and in Wrocław on November 18-24 (New Horizons Cinema).
This year’s edition of Five Flavours is the biggest in history – it presents over 40 productions. The program combines artistic and commercial cinema, allowing the audience to experience the best Asian films have to offer. On the one hand, there are the intimate stories with a social angle, on the other – fresh, innovative blockbusters, filled with the sheer joy of cinematic creation, attracting millions of viewers in their homelands.
