If you’ve read my Top 10 Movies of 2014 list, you’ll know I proclaimed the vast amount of really good movies released this year but for all the good movies, there has to be some bad… And the bad were Really bad this year. From unfunny comedies to weird vanity projects that were seemingly made just for friends and family of the film makers attached, to some truly awful horror movies it seems that 2014 will be marked by some truly terrible films – some of which made it to the big screen!
The criteria is the same as my “best of” list: it has to be a movie I’ve seen this year, one that was released this year, i.e. making its UK debut, or a new movie that I’ve seen at a film festival that might not necessarily have been distributed as of yet. Also, the cut off...

Whoa, a film starring Robert De Niro and John Travolta – what could go wrong?! Well, a lot apparently. For one, Travolta plays a Serbian veteran from the Bosnian war, complete with a goofy accent and all. Seriously. Why not just get someone who actually has the accent, not the dude best known for his dance moves? Eh, that isn’t even the biggest problem though, as Killing Season takes a decent concept, a killer cast, and some pretty brutal effects, but squanders them all. This script must have been damn near flawless on paper, because I haven’t a single clue how either of these A-List celebrities got involved.
Killing Season is nothing but a drawn out game of cat and mouse, as director Mark Steven Johnson brutalizes our characters with graphically disturbing scenes of violence, and writer Evan Daugherty strings the chase along tirelessly with one silly shift in power after the next.

Upon initially learning about Killing Season, I’ll admit I was a little confused as to why a movie pitting Robert De Niro against John Travolta was getting such a limited release, but after watching Killing Season, I completely understand. Directed by Daredevil/Ghost Rider helmer Mark Steven Johnson and penned by Snow White and the Huntsman‘s Evan Daugherty, what should have been an epic battle amounts to nothing but a few brutal torture scenes and a lazy game of cat and mouse. Plus, John Travolta as an ex-Serbian militant with a heavy accent? Um, Ok, I guess he kind of pulled it off, but the whole time I couldn’t help scratching my head at the distracting casting. Luckily, De Niro isn’t forced into a silly accent himself, otherwise we might have had an unintentional comedy on our hands.

Originally intended as a vehicle to reunite those crass offenders of subtlety, Nicolas Cage and John Travolta (with helmer John McTiernan in tow), the once titled 1970s set Shrapnel mutated into Mark Steven Johnson’s modern day Killing Season with Robert De Niro replacing Cage. While initially this seems like an accidentally lucky scenario for the film’s predestined doom, De Niro’s presence distractingly inverts the material into what feels like The Deer Hunter: Part Deux. Despite its swift descent into high camp, the film still manages to numb us into a repetitive lull during its last half, all bark and no bite as it waffles between bloodthirsty revenge flick and a catch-and-release confessional.

The deadening inevitability of “Killing Season” is that, for all its bluster and violence, the picture’s going to end on a ponderous note it can’t quite deliver convincingly. This barebones time-killer from the ruthlessly frugal folks at Millennium Films announces its intentions from the title on, and its two stars—Robert De Niro and John Travolta—seem glumly game to scowl their way through the proceedings with the professionalism of a mercenary, and the passion of one as well. De Niro is Benjamin Ford, a former-soldier-turned-recluse who screens all his calls from a secluded cabin in the woods. That includes those of his son (Milo Ventimiglia), who is baptizing his newborn child and wants Grandpa Shut-In to make an appearance. That seems unlikely, though the film does a poor job of explaining whether Ford is reacting to the broken marriage that separated him from the family, or the lasting scars of war.
