Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock has been known to take as long as eight years between albums, but nearly three decades into his band’s career, he’s ready to pick up the pace. Three years after the release of the well-received The Golden Casket, he’s already recorded enough songs for a new Modest Mouse album with producers including Jacknife Lee and Dave Sardy, and intends to put one out by next spring. “In my early days of putting out records, I wrote music every fucking day,” he tells...

The Beekeeper Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Jason Statham, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Bobby Naderi, Josh Hutcherson, Jeremy Irons, Phylicia Rashad, Jemma Redgrave, and Minnie Driver
Director: David Ayer
The Beekeeper Movie Review Is Out! (Picture Credit: IMDb)
What’s Good: Jason Statham being Jason Statham
What’s Bad: It over-promises on its selling point, i.e., the action, but under-delivers at almost every level
Loo Break: Whenever you don’t see Jason Statham doing Jason Statham things
Watch or Not?: With zero expectations while having a Sunday dinner after you fail to find anything to watch
Language: English
Available On: Theatrical Release
Runtime: 1 hour 48 minutes
User Rating:
Adam Clay is a Beekeeper, not the regular one who is just in for the honey; he’s the protector of the ‘hive’ – a masterfully skilled assassin secretly appointed by the United States. He’s someone who can go ‘John Wick’ even on...

Director David Ayer is one of the greatest filmmakers around and his movies are must-sees for any movie geek. Most of his films you can find on streaming including Netflix’s Bright, End Of Watch on Prime Video, The Tax Collector on Hulu, Sabotage on Paramount+, the underappreciated Suicide Squad on Max, and my personal favorite – the brilliant Fury film from 2014.

Every time The Walking Dead launches a new spinoff, I approach it the same way: with cautious optimism. And more often than not, it lets me down. So you can imagine my delight to discover that the series’ fifth offshoot, Daryl Dixon — premiering on AMC Sunday, Sept. 10, at 9/8c — is, as the French would say, très bien. Pourquoi?

Boldly going where few first-time (or however–many-time) directors dare, actor-turned-filmmaker Mo McRae fashions a high-wire juggling act of a debut, in which half the breathless, uneasy entertainment value comes from wondering when it will all come tumbling down. That it eventually does, therefore — in a final act that overworks some unnecessarily soapy twists — feels slightly inevitable. But it can’t undo the sly, stylish first impression McRae makes: Ironically, considering it revolves around a kidnapping, this is a film that takes no prisoners.
The provocative, intersectional dynamics of race, class and sex are announced elegantly, as Dp John Rosario’s sinuous camera delivers a cleverly choreographed 17–minute one-shot opening. Introducing not only the main characters, but their pointedly affluent environment and the see-sawing internal power-play of their relationship, this terrific scene plays like “Malcolm and Marie” given a sense of humor and a social conscience, as James (Y’lan Noel...

For a while, it seemed like a sequel to Zombieland would never happen. Lo and behold, however, 2019 is the year in which we get another day in Zombieland, a full decade after the original hit theaters. Opening tonight, Zombieland: Double Tap is a really fun reunion with characters we care about. The freshness of the original isn’t quite there, but instead of seeking to be as creatively daring again, the returning players in front of and behind the camera opt to lean into pure fun. In short order, the movie reminds you why you had such a good time with these characters and this premise, making for a breezy action/comedy/horror hybrid. The film is a sequel, of course, to Zombieland. Since we last left our heroes, they’ve been setting into the new world, holding off the undead and forming an unlikely family. In the opening moments,...

From the moment "Sabotage" begins, it's obvious that David Ayer has something nasty in mind, but it's only once you've settled in and spent some time with it that the truly sleazy heart of "Sabotage" becomes clear. This is a movie set in a world where everyone is a giant piece of garbage, and even the ostensible hero of the movie is a horrible person, corrupt and broken and incapable of recognizing justice, much less dispensing it. Ayer took a Skip Woods action script and turned it into something more distasteful, and I mean that with all due affection. This feels like the '80s action films where established icons suddenly showed up in these genuinely dirty movies, graphic simply for the sake of being graphic. "10 To Midnight" and "Tightrope" are two films that immediately jumped to mind when I saw this, or Stallone's "Nighthawks" or "Cobra." In this, Schwarzenegger stars as John Wharton,...

One of the staples of the Los Angeles Film Festival is the festival’s Coffee Talk series which bring together top names in the industry to discuss their craft and offer inside insights on what it is like to be a working director, screenwriter, actor, or composer. This year’s “Coffee Talks: Composers” panel featured The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo composer, Atticus Ross, John Dies at the End and Iron Man 3 composer, Brian Tyler, and Zombieland and End of Watch composer, David Sardy. It was an interesting panel with Tyler and Sardy sharing the experience of composing for big budget films while Ross had avoided some of those studio pressures to pave his own way through the industry. All three have different backgrounds with Ross coming from a band member’s perspective, Sardy a music producer’s perspective, and Tyler from an indie film into big blockbuster perspective, making...

The Oscars are a little over two months away, and with so many fantastic films released throughout this year, the anticipation surrounding the announcement of the nominations next month is running on high.
So far, we’ve had the shortlists for the Best Animated Feature, the Best Visual Effects, and the Best Documentary categories.
Now the Academy has announced the list of 104 films that are eligible in the Best Original Score category, and it’s going to be very interesting to see what makes the final cut come nominations time next month.
I think Hans Zimmer’s score for The Dark Knight Rises is, hopefully, a lock, because it is amazing. I also loved James Horner’s score for The Amazing Spider-Man, but can’t decide whether or not I think it will earn a nomination.
Alexandre Desplat has three films in the running this year, with Argo, Rise of the Guardians,...

As far as I'm concerned, the two most memorable scores of the year belong to Cloud Atlas and Beasts of the Southern Wild. That said, I made an egregious and unforgivable mistake when filling out my Critics' Choice nominations and forgot to include not one of them, but Both of them! Shame. I feel it. Now I have to hope my fellow Bfca members came through where I failed. However, we will discuss Critics' Choice nominations more on the upcoming episodes of the RopeofSilicon podcast, for now we're talking Oscar as the Academy has released a complete list of all 104 original scores competing for Best Original Score at the 2013 Oscars. I have not yet posted my predictions for Best Original Score and while I am making a fuss above concerning Cloud Atlas and Beasts of the Southern Wild, I think both of those stand a very strong chance at a nomination this year.

Released on September 18th, we're a little bit behind the eight ball on "The End Of Watch" soundtrack. However, thanks to LoudWire, we've come across an additional extra musical tidbit which is arguably more interesting than the original release. While the soundtrack disc itself features an original score composed by David Sardy ("Zombieland," "21"), a classic track from Public Enemy ("Harder Than You Think") and cuts by the Latin Rascals and The Delfonics, the iTunes release features an extra original new song from Queens of The Stone Age Frontman Josh Homme. Titled, "Nobody To Love" and also featuring Sardy, the cut is apparently heard in the film's final credits (and you can listen to it below) and was released in low-key form on iTunes only. As you likely already know, "End Of Watch" was directed by David Ayer and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, Anna...

Perhaps consider this a bit of a spoiler post, at least musically. So if you want to go in blind to John Hillcoat's prohibition drama "Lawless," we suggest you divert your eyes now. For the rest of you still with us, man, the soundtrack to "Lawless" is just one more reason to get excited for the film which lands on August 29th. By now you know it boasts an incredible cast including Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pearce, Mia Wasikowska, Gary Oldman, Shia Labeouf and Jason Clarke. You also know that the score was written by longtime Hillcoat collaborators Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, who wrote the haunting scores for "The Proposition," "The Road" and "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" (the multi-hyphenate Cave, an author, also wrote the "Lawless" screenplay).

Needless to say, Biophilia – an album prefaced by an elaborate iPad app and thematically encompassing the entire universe – isn't loaded with singles.
