When done well, found footage horror makes for one of the most immersive and unnerving viewing experiences. The inherent naturalism tends to make the horror feel more plausible and real. Found footage horror doesn’t need a huge budget or recognizable names among the cast to induce chills, either, and the lo-fi visuals only further add to the scares.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to found footage horror movies that excel with the format, delivering unsettling atmosphere and scares while making the most of their immersive, lo-fi aesthetics. Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Rights to “I, The Executioner,” which will premiere as a Midnight Screening at the Cannes Film Festival this year, have been picked up by South Korea’s Cj Enm.
The crime-action film directed by Ryu Seung-wan (also written Ryoo Seung-wan) is a sequel to Ryu’s 2015 hit “Veteran” and in Korea goes by the title “Veteran 2.”
Few details of the story have yet been disclosed, but Cj describes the film as “combining Ryu’s trademark action with observations and messages about social change.” Ryu last year enjoyed major box office success with crime comedy “Smugglers.”
Hwang Jung-min, who recently enjoyed box office success in “12.12: The Day,” reprises his role from “Veteran.” He is joined in the sequel by Jung Hae-in (“Tune in for Love”) as a new member of the film’s Violent Crime Investigation Squad.

Here are the best Korean movies currently available for streaming on Netflix.

1. The Wailing (2016) by Na Hong-jin
“The Wailing” features many grotesque scenes. Cannibalism, violent killings, people acting like zombies, the terribly depicted skin infection, the cock killing ritual, and the amounts of blood all point towards an extreme horror film. The same applies to Hyo-jin's behavior, which is very hard to watch, particularly during the ritual scene. The sequences involving the dog and the...

The case of Yoo Young-chul was one that really shocked Korea. The 24-years-old man at the time of his arrest (2004) admitted to the murders of multiple people, mostly prostitutes and wealthy old women, and the Seoul Central District Court convicted him of 20 murders, although one case was dismissed when it was identified as being committed by another serial killer, Jeong Nam-gyu. Yoo burned three and mutilated at least 11 of his victims and admitted that he ate the livers of some of them. Yoo explained his motives in front of a TV camera saying “Women shouldn't be sluts, and the rich should know what they've done.” Three years after his sentence was carried out in 2005, Na Hong-jin came with one of the most impressive debuts in the history of Korean cinema, and one of the top crime thrillers ever to come out of the country (and the world), based on his story.

Horror, long a staple and favoured genre for Asian filmmakers, has seen dwindling returns in Korea of late. Sure, there's a number of works in the genre that come out each year, but none have made quite the positive impact on the audience, critics or the box office since “The Wailing” all the way back in 2016. Director Jang Jae-hyun seems to have made it his mission to keep horror alive and kicking, debuting with “The Priests”, a well-made tale that explored Christian exorcisms, before following it up with “Svaha: The Sixth Finger”, which explored new religions and cults in the guise of horror. While both those features saw mixed reactions from the audience, Jang continues to produce scary stories with “Exhuma”, his latest work which debuted at the Berlin Film Festival before a wide release. Received with much enthusiasm from the audience, the release quickly became the highest grossing Korean film of 2024 so far.

Four weeks after its initial release, South Korean horror film “Exhuma” is still burning through the country’s box office. “Pamyo,” as it’s known in Korea (which directly translates to “exhumation for relocation or cremation”), has resonated in a major way with audiences who have shown up in droves to see the story of a shaman named Hwa-rim (Kim Go-eun) and the wandering spirits she takes on with Bong-gil (Lee Do-hyun), her protégé. This week: it expands in the United States.
Just one week into its release, “Exhuma” became the highest-grossing Korean film of 2024 so far, knocking the Timothée Chalamet-starring “Wonka” off the top spot following its delayed release there. Chalamet’s other big film of the moment, “Dune: Part Two,” placed second in Korea for three successive weekends in the wake of “Exhuma” too.
That means that, nearly a month in, “Exhuma” has made $67.8 million with sales of 9.3 million tickets,...

Alicia Vikander has received much love and the President’s Award for lifetime achievement at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival during its 57th edition, which opened on Friday.
The Oscar winner got a very warm reception from attendees of the opening ceremony, charming the audience by mentioning that her film A Royal Affair had shot in the Czech Republic, that she had enjoyed her time in the country and that it had been “pivotal” for her career. Karim Aïnouz’s Firebrand, starring Vikander as Queen Catherine Parr, the final wife of Henry VIII, who’s played by Jude Law, then kicked off this year’s fest.
In a wide-ranging roundtable conversation with The Hollywood Reporter and other media representatives, Vikander shared how she decides which roles to take on and why learning lines is so important for her. She also discussed her producing work, including future projects, film festival venues Cannes and Busan,...

Alicia Vikander Says Her Role in Sci-Fi Thriller ‘The Assessment’ Is ‘Pretty Wild,’ and ‘Scares’ Her
Alicia Vikander, the Swedish actor who won an Oscar for her role in “The Danish Girl” in 2015, has taken on a remarkable range of characters in recent years – but is still stretching her boundaries, she says.
Speaking at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where she presented the historical drama “Firebrand” on opening night, Vikander says she’s now prepping for films that offer distinctly different challenges than her turn as Catherine Parr, the only one of Henry VIII’s six wives to outlive the marriage.
One character she admits she’s still deciphering is the central figure in the upcoming sci-fi feature “The Assessment,” a feature project with Paris-based writer/director Fleur Fortuné.
“I got the script sent to me,” says Vikander, adding that something about the story instantly intrigued her. Details are still under wraps, she says, but the film is set in a world of the near future...

South Korean executive Jeongin Hong never planned to become a movie mogul. After studying economics at Princeton and putting in distinguished stints in private equity at Boston Consulting and Goldman Sachs (“I’m a science and economics guy,” he says), he was lured back to the family business in 2015. His family’s firm happens to be JoongAng Group, arguably Korea’s largest media conglomerate. Founded by Hong’s grandfather, Hong Jin-ki, the company publishes Korea’s most widely read newspapers, owns a university and a skyscraper, and controls major broadcaster Jtbc, among many other business lines. Hong was initially pulled back into the patrilineal corporate fold to help with corporate strategy; but in 2017 he proposed to his elder brother, JoongAng Group’s current CEO, Jeongdo Hong, that the time was right to further capitalize on the Korean content wave still sweeping the globe by restructuring their conglomerate’s collection of...

When Michael Fassbender drove for Porsche at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2022, he carried on a long tradition of movie stars moonlighting as race car drivers that goes back to Paul Newman. Now, it appears that Fassbender is doing his part to mentor the next generation of actors with a need for speed.

Casting continues to heat up for Hope, a new survival thriller from Korean director Na Hong-Jin (The Wailing).
Deadline reports that “Squid Game” star Jung Ho-yeon will join previously announced cast members Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander.
The outlet says, “The largely Korean-language film will follow the residents of Hopo Port, where a mysterious discovery is made on the outskirts of the remote harbor town. Before long, the residents find themselves in a desperate fight for survival against something they have never encountered before.”
What’s the mysterious discovery? If The Wailing is any indication, it’ll likely get very intense.
Jung Ho-yeon, also known as Hoyeon, is a South Korean model and an actress who made her acting debut on Netflix’s popular “Squid Game” series as the breakout character Kang Sae-byeok. Her portrayal earned the actor a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series.

Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, real-life husband and wife, are reuniting onscreen for the second time. The Oscar-winner (Vikander for “The Danish Girl”) and the Oscar-nominee (Fassbender for “12 Years A Slave”) will star in “Hope,” a mostly Korean-language feature from Na Hong-Jin.
The picture, about a mysterious delivery made on the outskirts of a remote harbor town, is the filmmaker’s first directorial effort since “The Wailing” earned rave reviews and $49 million worldwide in 2016 from a $6 million budget, with $48 million of that coming from South Korea.
“Oftentimes,” noted Hong-Jin, “a person’s goodwill can lead to unintended catastrophe simply because of differences in perspective. My hope for this film is to cinematically capture that phenomenon in a way that has yet to be seen.”

For those who love South Korean cinema, Na Hong-jin‘s “The Wailing” was a special treat when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016: a rural police procedural with a touch of the macabre and supernatural. But that was almost seven years ago, so what has Na been up to lately? Well, the director has a new short called “Faith” he shot on the new Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, ready for its release after a press screening late last month.

Superstition, suspicion and paranoia define some of the great entries within the horror and thriller genre, especially when combined with the concept of family, as this addition often gives the supernatural ideas something everyone in the audience can connect to. South-Korean genre cinema has learned its lesson from film history, given the international success of such features like Na Hong-jin’s “The Wailing” or Yeon Sang-ho’s “Train to Busan”, as both of them blended genre elements with a strong emotional core, in this case a father looking out for his family. In his feature debut “Seire”, director Park Kang proves he also aims to follow in the footsteps of the great within the genre, following the story of a first-time father becoming entrapped in a cycle of superstition and the responsibility for his young family. Lee Sang-yong’s 2022 feature, The Roundup, had many twists and turns before it was finally released in South Korean theaters in May. The production originally began in 2019, but filming was temporarily postponed, as location permits did not come through in Vietnam, where the story is mostly set, because of the pandemic. The industry’s old saying that “no sequel is better than its prequel” put even more pressure on Lee, who was an assistant director on the film’s precursor, 2017’s The Outlaws, about an old-school detective taking down a ruthless gangster in Seoul’s Chinatown.
“I really didn’t think the movie would turn out this well,” says Lee, whose feature became a smash hit, beating its predecessor at the box office. “I’m just stunned and grateful. It’s the result of the hard work of many actors and staff for over three years,...

Sometimes movies escape our attention, for many reasons. We were busy with other things, we were sick when it was released, we lost our Netflix login. Here is another attempt by the Tfh gurus to shine some light on a few films you may have missed.
The Chaser is a 2008 South Korean film that was inspired by a real-life serial killer. Directed by Na Hong-jin, the story centers on a former-cop-turned-pimp. Now, that’s a real career change for you. The pimp becomes alarmed when two of his prostitutes go missing, creating a cash flow situation that probably makes him consider rejoining the force.
The suspect is captured during what can only be described as an automotive meet-cute – he literally crashes into a cop car – but he can’t be held for long due to lack of evidence. His rap sheet includes performing a lobotomy on a family member, which might be excused,...

After a great couple years that 2019 and 2020 were for South Korean cinema, big things were expected in 2021. With the virus situation calming down briefly and providing some relief, it looked set to be a promising year, as productions that were halted kicked back into gear and high-profile films that were awaiting release finally started to find their way back to the theatres. However, in terms of the quality of the output that we received, it would be safe to say that the industry could not quite capitalise on the success of the preceding two years and in fact can be seen taking a step back in 2021.
In any case, from what we did get, here are the best South Korean film of 2021, in reverse order. Some films may have premiered in 2020, but since they mostly circulated in 2020, we decided to include them.

18 of the contributors of Asian Movie Pulse from America, Oceania, Europe and Asia have voted the 25 Best Films of 2021, resulting in what we consider a great selection, particularly since the offer of titles this year was much wider, as the industry started to recover from the disaster that was 2020, particularly during the second semester. In that regard, the list includes films Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Philippines, S. Korea, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Lebanon, Iran, China and Taiwan, while crime thrillers, animations, shorts, action and documentaries have found a place.
