There are murmurs popping up that DC and Warner Bros. might be taking another stab at the holy grail of comic-book-to-movie movements: an accurate, widely accepted film version of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen. As reported by Cbr, Warner Bros. recently released a survey to its “A-List” mailing list, asking for opinions on an R-rated, faithful animated adaptation of the classic graphic novel.
It’s been eight years since Zack Snyder’s live-action adaptation of Moore’s book earned a polarized response from critics and audiences, who were torn on the film’s loving relationship with its own violence and oozing style. The animated version would presumably sidestep that by doing everything in its power to capture Moore’s pacing and Gibbons’ art, something DC has previously attempted with its Dark Knight Returns and Killing Joke adaptations (generally to mixed effect).

Batgirl is the latest DC hero to be touted for a solo movie, with Joss Whedon at the helm. But who is Batgirl? Let's take a look...
Holy déjà vu, Batman! Only last week I was writing about the announcement that a new member of the Bat-family has been given their own movie among Warner Bros’ already-jam-packed DC Extended Universe slate. Dick Grayson, aka Nightwing, was the chap under discussion then.
Last week, on top of that, the news broke that Joss Whedon is writing, directing and producing a Batgirl movie as part of the Dceu. Warners is clearly serious about expanding out from Ben Affleck’s Batman to tell other stories about cowl-loving caped crusaders.
Here’s everything you need to know about Batgirl, mixed with some possibly-useless fan speculation about casting, villains and more...

Toy Fair is an annual trade show where hundreds of toy companies get together to showcase their latest innovations for buyers and press. The following is a photo recap from the DC Collectibles booth. To see the rest of our coverage, click Here.
It is no surprise that the majority of items featured in the DC Collectibles booth were related to characters appearing in Justice League, Wonder Woman, and Suicide Squad. One of the most impressive items was a beautifully sculpted statue depicting Harley Quinn and Batman fighting atop a runaway roller coaster. This piece is notable not only for the extreme detail but also for something it doesn’t include: Mr. J. Sure the Joker’s face appears on the coaster cart but it is quite refreshing to see a statue depicting a showdown just between Bats and Harley, and her pet hyenas Bud and Lou.

I’m sure just reading the title of this article may have given you a bit of a gut reaction. For some, it may have been a positive one, but for a good many of you, I’m sure the response was negative. Acting is an art form all about making decisions, and for better or worse, Jared Leto’s interpretation of the Clown Prince of Crime in last year’s Suicide Squad was one full of plenty of bold ones.
More than any other live-action portrayal, Leto’s Joker was a wholly unpredictable entity. Even with Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning interpretation in The Dark Knight you can see an underlying logic beneath his actions. Sure, you may not understand them, but you get the impression that all his anger, hate, and chaos-focused persona is coming from somewhere. With Leto’s version, I got the impression he was too doped...

The killing Joke is one of the most popular Batman stories ever written. It’s recently been adapted into animated film form. Ever since it came out in 1988, there has been debate about the ending. The ambiguous ending has led many readers to believe that Batman killed the Joker in the final scene. Is this really the case or is it just a wild fan theory?
When Alan Moore wrote The Killing Joke for DC 28 years ago—which was excellently illustrated by Brian Bolland—he not only created one of the best stories about the Dark Knight of Gotham City, he also created a lasting controversy between comic fans as to the meaning of the vague final page. What actually happens at the end? Does Batman really kill his arch-enemy or is this a misinterpretation?

Okay, first off — Warning! This Batman movie is not for kids! Batman: The Killing Joke is the first- R-Rated DC original animated movie ever. It’s based on the comic created by Alan Moore & is known for being particularly disturbing and dark. This is what sets up The Joker as the baddest villain in Gotham. You know how Batgirl ended up in a wheelchair and then became Oracle — well this is how she ended up paralyzed.
Batman: Killing Joke had it’s debut at Comic-Con and Maddy was there to interview the voice of Batman himself (Kevin Conroy), Ray Wise (yes! That Ray Wise!) who voices Commissioner Gordon, and writer Brian Azzarello (who not only adapted the one-shot to the script, but added additional material to the story to give Barbara Gordon a story arc).

Last month, we reported that DC was working on an animated film about the Justice League Dark team, a group of magic-based heroes who handle the threats that are too spooky for the regular Justice League. Now, with that controversial Killing Joke adaptation wrapped up—you know, the one that even the people who made it seem to hate—DC has officially announced Justice League Dark as its next animated feature. As that original report said it would, the confirmation comes from a behind-the-scenes featurette included on the Killing Joke disc, and it gives a quick introduction to the basic setup of the Dark team and a preview of which DC characters will show up.
Batman will be there, of course, appearing alongside John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, Deadman, Etrigan, and Black Orchid. Also, as a fun surprise, the animated Constantine will be played by none other than Matt Ryan...

The new Justice League footage is a less serious than anything in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, but that’s not really saying much. If it’s still too serious for you, though, it sounds like The Lego Batman Movie will prove once again just how versatile the Dark Knight can really be. Lego Batman director Chris McKay underlined this point during Warner Bros.’ Comic-Con panel, explaining that he wants the movie to be “About A Boy as directed by Michael Mann.”
That’s an appropriate comparison, considering that the panel also showed off some new footage that featured the introduction of Michael Cera’s Lego Robin, who reportedly annoys Batman by repeatedly calling him “Dad.” The footage also featured a Lego Barbara Gordon, who Batman introduced as his “platonic bat-friend,” an especially weird line given that Killing Joke stuff. There was even a new trailer, which hasn’t...

Fans have been patiently waiting for more information on the highly-anticipated “Twin Peaks” revival. Few details are known about what’s to be expected, but now we have a couple more to add to the list. During the San Diego Comic-Con panel for “Batman Killing Joke,” Ray Wise, who portrayed Leland Palmer in the original series, mentioned that the revival would be released by Showtime in the summer of 2017. Though that time frame has not been confirmed by the network.
He also stated that there would be a total of 18 episodes, all to be directed by David Lynch, and that he would be in all of them. The number of episodes does match the number listed on IMDb.

The Killing Joke has been a contentious point in Batman comics history because many people view the way The Joker paralyzes Barbara Gordon (aka Batgirl) as a symptom of a larger negative attitude toward women in comics. You can read all about the controversy here. It's tough to argue with that assessment, especially considering that the story was meant to be a one-off but Barbara ended up remaining paralyzed and taking on the role of Oracle in canon after that.

This first time I read Batman: Killing Joke, I was barely a teenager. I couldn't make heads or tails of it. Why is everyone in the Batman world so intense? The moody but well meaning Batman I knew had turned outright grim. The graphic novel (correct usage!) (this was actually a graphic novel, not a trade paperback) contained sexual violence and gruesome imagery, and it all hinged on an existential crisis. I wondered if the philosophical discussions between Batman and Joker were canon; isn't Batman supposed to make us happy? Sure the guy is a little sour, but he's still fun, right? Nope, writer Alan Moore and artist Brian Bolland seemed to be saying. We should be seriously worried about his mental health. I was disturbed. I thought it was cool that I was disturbed. I was, as I said, barely a teenager. Alan Moore has since disavowed the book,...

A new listing from the BBFC indicates that the next direct-to-video feature title from WB Animation, after the release of "Batman: The Killing Joke" this Summer, will be a "Justice League Dark" adaptation.
The BBFC classification indicates 'Killing Joke' will boast a sneak peek at Jld. What impact that will have Guillermo del Toro's long gestating live-action adaptation s unclear though likely negligble.

A hard R adaptation of Alan Moore.s beloved graphic novel, The Killing Joke will bring the dark story of The Joker.s iconic battle with Batman and Jim Gordon to life for the very first time. The film thus far looks incredibly faithful to the source material, but as it turns out, Warner Bros. will make some distinct changes to expand the role of Barbara Gordon a.k.a Batgirl in the film. According to a new report from Hitfix, it now seems that The Killing Joke will feature a 15-minute prologue that chronicles the crime-fighting career of Batgirl. Concept artist Phil Bourassa has revealed via his Instagram account that an animated adaptation of Alan Moore and Brian Bollan's iconic graphic novel "Batman: The Killing Joke" was being developed back in 2009 by Warner Brothers.
Legendary animation artist and "Batman: The Animated Series" producer Bruce Timm was developing the project and supervising Bourassa's work on the project. Whiether Timm, who directed the much acclaimed "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" as well as iconic animated Batman episodes like "Heart of Ice," was going to helm isn't clear.
Why did the project collapse? The failure of the R-rated "Watchmen" at Warners put the fear in the studio over R-rated superhero movies. Cut to seven years later and "Deadpool" is at the top of the box-office while Timm's protege Sam Liu is slated to helm an upcoming Dcau direct-to-disc & VOD adaptation of "The Killing Joke" which is currently on the way.

One of the film projects I'm most excited about seeing this year is DC Entertainment's animated adaptation of Batman: The Killing Joke. The movie will be based on Alan Moore's comic, which is one of the darkest Batman stories ever told. It's so dark that the movie might get slapped with an R-rating. A few months ago, producer James Tucker revealed that Warner Bros. gave them permission to make an R-rated animated film. Due to the subject matter of the comic, it seems like it would be hard not to get that kind of rating. It didn't mean the movie would be rated R, though. This is crazy story follows The Joker as he escapes from Arkham Asylum and shoots Barbara Gordon, paralyzing her in order to terrorize her father, Jim Gordon.

Concept Artist Phil Bourassa has taken to Instagram to reveal that back in 2009, he was working on an animated adaptation of Alan Moore and Brian Bollan's Batman: The Killing Joke. The film was being developed by the legendary Bruce Timm however, Warner Bros. pulled the plug. Said Bourassa,--- "In 2009 I started working on an animated adaptation of The Killing Joke under the supervision of legendary Animation artist Bruce Timm. Two weeks into the project we were told to stop development because The Watchmen had under performed at the box office and WB had lost faith in R rated superhero movies. Happy to say that you guys are gonna finally get your animated Killing Joke adaptation in 2016. Apparently enough money has been made from superhero movies and adaptations of comics of every stripe that it now transcends the previously assumed limitations of the genre. It's a good time to be a comic geek!

Looks like Warner Bros. has held an early test screening for Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and it looks like one fan just couldn't stop himself from saying anything about it. It's not uncommon for a studio to hold a test screening for a film like this, but it looks like this guy decided to violate the Nda. In fact, the person used a throw-away Reddit account that he named "ViolatingNDA." That being said, we don't know for sure if this person actually did attend a screening, but if he did, he definitely had some things to say about it!
The following write up contains possible big Spoilers, so proceed at your own risk!

A Reddit user has claimed to have attended a test screening for Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" last night and has offered a brief breakdown of what they saw in a posting.
The source, named 'Mr. ViolatingNDA', has provided proof that he was indeed invited to a secret screening of a Warner Bros. movie and says reaction to the film was overwhelmingly positive. Heroic Hollywood followed up on it and confirmed that a test screening of the film did take place last night.
The review has two parts - a non-spoiler one, and a spoiler one. First the non-spoilers which says the film runs long (at last report it clocks in at 151mins):
"The movie was very long, as long as Tfa if I were to make a comparison. It didn't drag though; every minute of the film was used effectively.
Performances were all great.

An early review of Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice has surfaced on Reddit today, coming to us from someone who apparently screened the film last night in Los Angeles. How authentic this may be is up for you to decide, but it’s certainly interesting to see what he/she thought of the highly-anticipated superhero flick.
Be warned, spoilers will follow. If you’d prefer to go into the film with a clean slate, we’d advise turning back now. You’ve been warned….

After about 32 years of being a slavishly devout fan of Killing Joke, the job of reviewing their new studio album with any semblance of balanced objectivity is a tougher task than you might imagine. Those who have embraced the music, mythos and accompanying sensibility of Killing Joke tend to do so with a bug-eyed fervor that borders liberally on myopic zealotry. In short order, no other band matters nearly as much.
That was me for many a year. Sure, I listened to loads of different stuff, but no one touched Killing Joke. Not even close. Even their less salubrious moments -- say, their first divisively populist single, “Me or You?” or Jaz Coleman's beleaguered ersatz-prog opus, Outside The Gate -- still seemed a thousand times more intriguing than any contributions from the rest of the rock rabble, despite any inherent flaws or deviations from the script. Simply put, there...

Batman: The Killing Joke producer James Tucker has revealed that the much-anticipated adaptation of the graphic novel might be the superhero's first R-rated movie.
At Friday's (October 9) New York Comic-Con of Batman: Bad Blood panel, Tucker announced that they are allowed to make The Killing Joke an R-rated animated film.
But while Warner Bros has given Tucker and his team the permission for the rating, Tucker added that it doesn't mean he will make The Killing Joke R-rated.

The various direct-to-video DC animated movies of recent years have generally been getting darker and more adult, opting to keep the gritty and violent elements of the comic stories upon which they are based. Even so, most of them have been able to maintain a PG-13 rating.
That's not the cast with the upcoming "Batman: The Killing Joke" though as word out of New York Comic Con is that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has allowed the filmmakers to essentially go as dark and R rated as they need to.
Stitch Kingdom tweeted: "DC gave permission to make Killing Joke movie for R rating. Tucker himself then followed that up with a tweet saying that the rating the film gets won't be decided for some time.

As far as superheroes go, Batman is generally one of the darkest and grittiest of the bunch. From the pages of his comics to Christopher Nolan.s Dark Knight trilogy, there.s a lot of doom and gloom and violence to be found. This even extends to his animated features, which, while not as bleak as some of his live action films, can skew towards darkness. And the next one, an adaptation of Batman: The Killing Joke, could take this even farther, and might even wind up being rated R. According to Disney blog Stitch Kingdom, at New York Comic Con, James Tucker, a producer and animator on tons of DC animated properties, revealed that he was given the okay to go all out and make the hugely influential The Killing Joke R-rated. Diy, dark arts and chartbusters pepper this idiosyncratic story of the Joke’s four-decade career
Shaun Pettigrew’s exhaustive account of Killing Joke’s four-decade career is really a fans-only job, although it gradually loosens the cloak of mystique drawn around this band’s shoulders. Possibly spooked by frontman Jaz Coleman’s thousand-yard stare, Pettigrew takes his subjects’ dabbling in the darker arts seriously, devoting entire sidebars to runes and numerology. (Less serious: guest witness Peter Hook, who shrugs off such Kerrang!-friendly Satanism with the priceless: “I’m from Salford. Why would the devil scare me?”) Between wobbly VHS footage of continental music shows and spinning NME headlines, Pettigrew uncovers ample evidence of erratic personalities, yet he’s equally attuned to fluctuations in their scowling sound – the initial Diy flourishes, the artful lacquer of their mid-80s chartbusters, the harder edge regained once the spotlight moved elsewhere. Throughout, Coleman remains fascinatingly idiosyncratic,...

If you're any bit of a horror or hard rock fan, Charlie Clouser has already been in your rotation. Think, when your heart races a little more to the strains of the macabre theme to "American Horror Story," or if it's altogether stopped during this first season of "Wayward Pines." If Nine Inch Nails' "Downward Spiral"; or Marilyn Manson's solid '90s albums; or Rob Zombie, White Zombie, or select albums from A Perfect Circle, Killing Joke, Helmet or Puscifer have been in your spinlist, then Clouser has likely already left a mark on you. And if you've ever survived a "Saw" series movie, then Clouser's compositions may still be floating through your veins. The writer-musician recently wrapped on scoring aforementioned Fox show starring Matt Dillon. There you have it, folks. The new look of the Joker for Suicide Squad. Ever since it was revealed over the weekend, opinions on it have been divided right down the middle. Some people think he looks psychotic and interesting, and dig how the shot is clearly an homage to the iconic Killing Joke Joker illustration.
On the other hand, some people think he looks like he is squarely aimed at the Hot Topic target demo and that he too closely resembles Marilyn Manson than the Joker we all know, love and fear.
The reality is, we cannot pass any judgement here until we have heard the voice, seen the walk and see how Jared Leto chooses to play the clown prince of crime. For now, all we have to go on is a visual, and in terms of character, that is a fairly shallow way to judge. But screw it,...

Suicide Squad director David Ayer took to Twitter on Friday evening to offer up the first look at Jared Leto as The Joker in the upcoming DC Comics Multiverse feature, as the Oscar winner is sporting several tats including the word "Damaged" across his forehead. I'm not necessarily familiar with the variety of Jokers found in the comic books, but this definitely has the appearance of being far afield Heath Ledger's version in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight and even appears to be far more zany than Jack Nicholson's portrayal in Tim Burton's Batman (1989). It's been a weird buildup to the first official look at Jared Leto's The Joker in "Suicide Squad." Warner Bros., David Ayer, and the actor himself milked every moment for what it was worth, from Leto getting his haircut to blurry cell photos of possible glimpses. But perhaps to beat the inevitable stream of paparazzi shots as filming gets underway, the first official look is here. Released to Twitter by the director, this version of The Joker is a bit Captain Obvious, underscoring his personality with tattoos. He's got the word "damaged" inked on his foreward, and Hahahahahaha up and down one arm and on his chest. The rest of the look riffs on Alan Moore's "Killing Joke" take on the villain with a shock of green hair. But Leto only wears one purple glove and has got some serious dental work/grills. Jared Leto sure seems to enjoy teasing his fans with his Joker look and mannerisms. He previously seemed to give us a taste of what his joker voice would sound like, which you can watch here. Then there is this photo of him re-enacting a famous piece of Joker art from the comic Batman: The Killing Joke, and he's even called his version of the character a "beautiful disaster," as well as "cerebral and comedic."
Now we have a new image of the actor sporting some very green style Joker hair and red lipstick. If you were to add the bleached skin, it would end up looking similar to the classic Killing Joke-era Joker.
The character is set to appear in Suicide Squad, and one day the full reveal of the character will come. In the meantime, I'm sure Leto will continue to slowly tease his transformation.

Op-Ed: Why the Batgirl Cover Should Have Been Cancelled!by Matt MacNabb
In recent weeks a controversy has arisen in the comic book fan community over a variant cover to Batgirl #41 that pays homage to the dark 1988 Batman one-shot, The Killing Joke. The story has been picked up by national media outlets and some may be wondering why this is such a big deal. The idea that this is an issue of censorship has been thrown around, as has a huge movement by the predominantly male comic book community for Dc Comics to release the cover as scheduled. The request to not release this cover came directly from the artist, Rafael Albuquerque. We aren't talking about censorship here, or freedom of speech. Niether of those qualify in this instance. You have a private company that opted not to release a cover that they commissioned to be created, based on sensitivity to the public.

Many comic book fans and professionals are in a uproar concerning DC Entertainments' decision to scrap plans for their "Killing Joke" inspired variant cover for Batgirl #41. Outspoken social media users who found fault with the cover were verbally assaulted on twitter, facebook, tumblr, etc to such an extent that artist Rafael Albuquerque requested DC change the cover. The Washington Post, Paste and The Guardian all wrote pieces, deriding DC for their intentions to publish the cover which they argue celebrates Batgirl's role as a physcially assaulted and sexually abused victim in Allan Moore's 1980 Batman tale. While most applauded DC's decision, other artist and writers were disappointed with DC, citing creative freedom and surmising that in today's social and politicial climate, "The Killing Joke" would never even get made. Others point to the fact that this retreat will lead to future incidents where social media outrage will arrest creative freedom...
