Whatever happened to the ABC talk show host Murray from The Last of Us? Did he get a fungal infection that turned him into a zombie? Granted, he was a character well before the timeline of the show, but still, ya know, flashbacks. Plus, Murray was played by Silicon Valley star Josh Brener.
In an early episode of The Last of Us, Murray jokes about Dr. Neuman’s claims that a fungus could wipe out mankind. Dr. Neuman emphasized there would be a loss of control by mankind. Murray then in hysterical fashion after listening solemnly, called for a commercial break.
We asked Brener if he was being brought back for Last of Us at our SXSW studio; the actor in Austin, TX for the world premiere of the crypto currency feature thriller, Cold Wallet.
“This is the mind of Craig Mazin!” said the actor about the series co-creator.

In the high-stakes world of digital currency, Cold Wallet takes us on a comedic heist journey that tries to mine more laughs than crypto, but occasionally finds itself lost in the blockchain of its own storyline. The semi-true tale spins a narrative around Billy (Raul Castillo), a father whose financial downfall leads him to hatch a plot alongside hacker extraordinaire Eva (Melonie Diaz) and good-vibes-only martial arts instructor Dom (Tony Cavalero), to crack into the cold wallet of supposedly deceased crypto CEO, Charles Hegel (Josh Brener). Their plan? Kidnap Hegel, force him to give up his trillion-dollar cold wallet, and redistribute that wealth like modern-day Robin Hoods to everyone he swindled with his “Tulip” coin.
Crypto (from an outside observer) looks overly complicated and managing a “Cold Wallet” seems about as easy as acquiring codes to launch nuclear weapons. The Cold Wallets requires several passcode or key phrases to access...

It’s great to see the always terrific Raúl Castillo in a lead role, bringing both despair and tenacious grit to a luckless blue-collar father whose dreams of liquidity are shattered by a cryptocurrency scam. Cutter Hodierne’s thriller about three financial crime victims who go after the man responsible, Cold Wallet, doesn’t always make the tech talk crackle or exactly nail the tone he appears to be going for, of home invasion tension streaked with dark humor. But solid performances and a pulpy scenario that keeps you guessing make this a suspenseful watch.
While it’s clear that director Hodierne and screenwriter John Hibey know the crypto world, your mileage may vary depending on familiarity with meme stocks and doxing, securities fraud and blockchain. I confess it’s all Greek to me. Films like Dumb Money took a more playful route to the little-guy investor bucking against capitalist chicanery,...

It’s hard to believe that of All the action franchises that have come and gone over the years that the Sniper series would still be going strong some thirty, yes Thirty, years after the debut of the original film. Since that debut we’ve had ten films – this latest one, Sniper: G.R.I.T. included – all of which have adapted with the times yet have still managed to find a consistency that has kept audiences coming back time and again. It also helps that, since 2011’s fourth film Sniper: Reloaded, we’ve had a consistent lead in actor Chad Michael Collins, playing Brandon Beckett the son of Tom Berenger’s original lead Gunnery Sergeant Tom Beckett.

This post contains spoilers for the first episode of HBO's "The Last of Us."
For people who have played "The Last Of Us," it's hard to finish the game and move on. In fact, most of us don't. Instead, we become evangelists for the game, talking its masterfully told story up to everyone we know in hopes that they, too, might get to experience the heartbreak, horror, and hope of Joel and Ellie's story.
For me, as a TV-lover first and a gamer second (if at all), this sort of wild-eyed evangelism extended to crossing all my fingers and toes in hopes that the game's eventual adaptation would be striking enough to catch the attention of the folks who would never come to the story in game form. This sense of protectiveness over the source material makes me feel silly, but I know I'm far from alone in this. In fact,...

This post contains spoilers for the first episode of "The Last of Us."
HBO's "The Last of Us" may be the most faithful video game adaptation to date, but that doesn't mean there aren't new stories to explore this time around. The television format provides the avenue to expand the vast post-apocalyptic world in ways the game could not. This is especially true for certain characters who get more screen time in the live-action adaptation. "The Last of Us" is still about Joel and Ellie's relationship, but we are getting to see the rest of their world with a closer lens. The first episode of the season makes it clear that expanding on the established canon is a priority for the HBO series.
As an avid fan of the franchise, seeing game-accurate details come to life in "The Last of Us" is incredibly satisfying. Pedro Pascal plays a withered-down Joel to a T,...

Note: This contains mild spoilers from The Last of Us season premiere on HBO.
So, great, do we really need to start worrying about our portobellos and shiitakes now, too?
The Last of Us got underway Sunday night with an eerie cold open prologue that’s set on a talk show in 1963. An epidemiologist (played by the wonderful John Hannah, of The Mummy and Spartacus fame) gives a dire warning to an incredulous host (Silicon Valley’s Joshua Max Brener) about the looming fungal threat. Hannah explains that certain fungi can infect and control its animal hosts and that humans could be next if such deadly spores were to evolve — say, due to climate change — to survive in a just slightly warmer climate.
“If the world were to get slightly warmer, then there is reason to evolve,” he said. “Candida, ergot, Cordyceps, Aspergillosis — any one of them could be capable...

Mythic Quest Co-Creator Megan Ganz On Poppy And Ian's Big Origin Story Episode [Exclusive Interview]
"Mythic Quest" has done it again. The Apple TV+ series about a team of dysfunctional video game designers spends the majority of each season as a geeky, raucous workplace comedy, but at least once per season, it switches gears completely. In one half-hour detour per year, without fail, the show morphs into a character-driven tearjerker.
In its debut season, the show gave us "A Dark Quiet Death," a magnificent one-off starring Cristin Miloti and Jake Johnson as a couple who fall in and out of love while creating the video game of their dreams. Season 2 shared the origin story of F. Murray Abraham's C.W. Longbottom (Josh Brener in flashback), a writer who was never quite able to live up to his own expectations for himself. Now, in its third season, the show has just delivered yet again with "Sarian," an episode that shows audiences how Ian (Rob McElhenney...

Though their popularity peaked long before most of today’s actual teenagers were born, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles never really went away. We’re only six years removed from the most recent live-action film based on the pizza-loving reptiles, and it was just two months ago that a new Tmnt video game was released. Ant Ward and Andy Suriano’s “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie,” which arrives on Netflix this week, is based on the animated series that aired on Nickelodeon from 2018 to 2020. While unlikely to bring any nostalgia-minded fans of the series’ early-’90s heyday back into the fold, “Rise” is a serviceable — if also forgettable — entry in the cowabunga canon.
It would be difficult to overstate how obsessed with ninjas and martial arts children were in the ’90s, with the franchise riding the same wave as “Mortal Kombat,” “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” and the “3 Ninjas” movies.
