In Word Traveler, a group of players represents friends who are on a trip together. Each player carries with them a map of places which they’d like to visit (represented by a small card that is kept secret) and must work with the other players to visit as many of their desired locations as possible. Each location scores either one or two points (as shown on the secret card) and at the end of two rounds of exploration, the players will score jointly to see how well they’ve done. There is no competitive mode in Word Traveler, and therefore this is quite a relaxed experience that works well for family game nights.
Included in Word Traveler are four maps across two boards (both of which are double-sided) depicting four cities – Paris, New York, Tokyo and London – and it’s nice to see a little “Tour Guide” booklet for these cities included,...

There was a time when players assumed that Bohemia Interactive’s post-apocalyptic survival title DayZ would remain in Steam’s Early Access in perpetuity. After all, this is a game that has flirted with release since 2012, after creator Dean Hall stated that an early, standalone build would be available to play by the year’s end — however, it wasn’t until December 2013 that the zombie-infested mod arrived.
Now, though, it appears as though the game is beginning to make some real, tangible headway, after the studio confirmed that a playable beta has been scheduled for late 2015, while the full and final build will make its debut in 2016. The beta will be available for $43.99 — which is slightly higher than the current price of $29.99 — and Bohemia confirmed that the asking price for DayZ will gradually increase in price as the title inches ever closer to release.

In a Crowdfunding Friday special, we salute the stunning games of Julian Gollop, and take a look at his Kickstarter project, Chaos Reborn...
It's often the case with games from the 70s and 80s that you had to be there at the time to appreciate how exciting they were to play. Some of us may have fond memories of something like Atari's Battlezone, for example, but would a 12-year-old of 2014 respond to it with the same excitement as a youngster in 1980? Probably not.
Likewise a game like 3D Deathchase for the Zx Spectrum, a racing game that felt like a white-knuckle recreation of the speeder bike chase from Return Of The Jedi back in 1983 - would it illicit the same gasps of excitement from a player now as it did back then? We doubt it, even if it is a game we remember with cosy fondness.

Rob celebrates decades of TV Superman doing what he does best: punching robots into oblivion...
It's hard to believe Superman's been zooming about on that glowing rectangle in the corner of our living rooms for most of his 75 year existence. It's just that we haven't always paid attention, what with things like the Cold War and MasterChef to distract us. But whatever the era, the medium, or the man in the tights, there's one constant when it comes to Superman on TV: he loves to break robots.
So as Superman turns 75, and Henry Cavill faces both Zod and the merciless Brain Interactive Construct of Internet Fandom, let's chart the history of the small screen Man of Steel by looking at the times he's gone up against men of metal...

Here's what happened during Sdcc when High Moon Studios' Matt Tieger was joined by Fall of Cybertron voice actors Peter Cullen (Optimus Prime), Gregg Berger (Grimlock), and Nolan North (Cliffjumper) to talk about letting players see the end of the last, great battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons.
Tieger launched into an explanation about the story and gameplay for the game, which follows War of Cybertron, where the heroic Autobots lost. Fall of Cybertron is about the death of their world. The design philosophy of the new game is about showng Cybertron and engaging with the planet and combat through the unique perspectives of each character.
High Moon Studios worked closely with Hasbro on developing the game's story, basing much of it on G1 Transformers and where possible or necessary, rewriting canon, particularly when it comes to the firebreathing space T-rex, Grimlock.

The Choice: Cat Deeley hosts The Choice, the new celebrity dating game show with a twist premiering Thursday, June 7 (9:00-10:00 Pm Et/Pt) on Fox. 2012 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Mathieu Young/Fox
Under a new rhyming scheme spin-off model for new shows, you’ll soon be able to watch The Choice, and see celebrities submit themselves to a blind date experiment. It’s The Voice‘s “no see” format, but now eligible celebrities are choosing potential romantic partners.
It’s bound to be crazy, and some of the “celebrities” only have loose ties to the claim, but it certainly looks to be the sort of madness people will check out.
Is this show too much? Let me know your thoughts. This falls into a category of reality that I find hard to predict, and I’d love to know if people are looking forward to it.

There are a few universally held truths in the video game world: Call of Duty games are lazy, WoW players don’t wash, n00bs are not to be tolerated, and movie videogame tie-ins are all terrible. All are of course are to be challenged, but unfortunately all are also based on a seed of truth. That last one in particularly is easily the most prolifically shared opinion among gamers, with very few exceptions to the rule that tie-ins tend to be overly rushed, and fundamentally lacking in substance or pushing the envelope in any but a cynically economic manner.
It is into that context that Activision’s latest title – Battleship: The Video Game – is released, and while we are yet to review it (watch this space), it would take some serious work to convince all but the most optimistic of gamers that it wasn’t set to follow the usual trend.

Funcom has been hard at work on The Secret World, and they've only recently starting letting people loose in the game to check things out. We visited the Funcom offices in Montreal recently for a look, and while it still holds a lot of secrets and riddles, it's not so secret anymore.
If you're unfamiliar with The Secret World (since, you know, it's a secret), the game is a massively sprawling Mmo set in the real world. Well, a real world where magic, zombies, vampires and more exist. Perhaps we should say modern world, except that discount the time-travel and the wormholes you'll be visiting throughout the game. As a member of this secret world, you'll be choosing a society that you will remain in throughout the game. Instead of two sides to choose from (i.e. Alliance or Horde), Tsw offers you three: the Illuminati, the Templars, or the Dragons.

Step aside, Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah, because when the world gets a look at our latest incredible movie giveaway, it will be the fans who really let out a "Joyful Noise."
Let the squeeing begin.
"Joyful Noise," of course, is the upcoming musical comedy that's one part "Sister Act," two parts "Glee" and three parts shut-yo-mouth thanks to the dynamic duo of Latifah and Parton, who play dueling choir directors trying to one-up each other. Throw in up-and-comer Keke Palmer and you have a mix that's a little bit country, a little bit hip-hop and a whole lot of awesome.
And since a special movie deserves a special giveaway, we've decided to take it out a whole new door by offering up not just a free copy of the soundtrack — which naturally features music from Palmer, Parton, Latifah and some of their closest friends, including country legend Kris Kristofferson...

Sunday night was a terrific night for fans of Julian Fellowes’ Downton Abbey. In the beginning there was RealPlayer, Quicktime and Windows Media Player; and formats such as .avi, .wmv, .mov and .rm.
Then, Flash started being able to display video formats and became the default method for doing so.
So, what’s the future of online video? Actually, the future is already here in the form of HTML5, the new language standard for web browsers. While those standards are not yet writ in stone — and, truly, of course nothing on the Internet ever is — most modern browsers already have the ability to interpret new HTML5 specifications.
Although much about this isn’t being written on film websites, developer and design websites frequently write excitedly about using new HTML5 tags such as <article>, <section>, <header>, <audio> and, most importantly for filmmakers: <video>.
Previous HTML standards needed an arcane method of properly formatting videos to play in different, specified players, such as the ones I mentioned in this article’s opening statements.

When word started to spread that Warren Spector, the mind behind classic games like "Deus Ex" and "Thief," was working on a title starring Mickey Mouse, it was, well, surprising. After all, those games aren't exactly safe for all ages, and Spector is known for creating new and interesting worlds. How would he and his team fare with an established, family-friendly franchise? The answer can be found in the playing of "Disney Epic Mickey," a game which unfortunately fails more often than it succeeds.
The Basics
"Epic Mickey" stars Mickey Mouse, naturally, but he's been taken out of his element. Transported to the mysterious world known as Wasteland, Mickey must discover what went horribly wrong in this world and will do his darndest to set things right.
To this end, Mickey comes packing a paint brush which can recreate objects in the world that have been devastated by thinner. He...

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I" is now the biggest "Harry Potter" opening of all time, having smashed box office records with a magical $125 million domestically.
The film -- which follows Harry, Hermione and Ron as they leave the comforts of Hogwarts to search for ways to destroy the evil wizard Lord Voldemort -- surpassed the series' previous best, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," which opened in 2005 with $102 million.

I’ve a soft spot for Megan Fox. Ever since her screen breakthrough, bent over inspecting the engine of a car wearing… I mean to say, ever since she stunned the world with her acting prowess in Michael Bay’s Transformers.
Here Miss Fox is starring alongside Mickey Rourke, Bill Murray and Rhys Ifans for Mitch Glazer’s first attempt at this directing lark. Passion Play is screening at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Anyway dudes, check out this first clip from the film and see whether you buy Megan Fox as a circus performer, or Mickey Rourke as a Jazz trumpeter. Will this be a cult curiosity or just plain old pants? This clip reminds me of Wim Wenders’ Paris, Texas – apart from the angel wings.
Synopsis:
Nate (Rourke), a small-time jazz musician, is clearly a hard-luck case. Caught trying to break into a car, he is taken off...

Looking for a bit of rom-com goodness on this Wednesday afternoon? Well you’ve come to the right place, my friend. Because the new trailer and poster have been released for The Romantics. Soundtrack aside, it’s actually a pretty interesting trailer from where I’m sitting, and hints that there may be a little more drama playing out in this film than your average romantic comedy.
Starring Katie Holmes (Batman Begins), Josh Duhamel (Transformers), Anna Paquin (X-Men), Elijah Wood (Sin City), Malin Akerman (Watchmen), Adam Brody (The O.C.), Jeremy Strong (The Happening), Candice Bergen (Boston Legal) and Rebecca Lawrence, the film hits cinemas later this year.
Over the course of one raucous night at a seaside wedding seven close friends, all members of a tight, eclectic college clique, reconvene to watch two of their own tie the knot. Laura (Katie Holmes) is maid of honor to Lila (Anna Paquin), her golden girl best friend.

Hasbro's "Transformers" are a big deal right now. It's like the '80s all over again, except the graphics are much, much better. Prime time then for gamers to take a jaunt across Cybertron, first overthrowing the filthy Autobot overlords and then beating back the vile Decepticon usurpers. That's exactly what players are tasked with doing in "Transformers: War for Cybertron," the latest effort from "The Bourne Conspiracy" developer High Moon Studios.
The Basics
"War for Cybertron" unfolds across 10 chapters split in half between two campaigns, one each for the Autobots and Decepticons. While players can start with either faction, the story first follows the Decepticons and their leader Megatron as they take control of the robot planet and infect its core with Dark Energon. The action then switches to the Autobots, led by a young upstart named Optimus after their leader Zeta Prime falls. The story is an entirely new concoction,...

Kenneth Branagh talks Thor
With all the news of Iron Man and Captain America sweeping the Internet we haven’t heard a lot about Thor lately. Well, director Kenneth Branagh has offered up some information about the production this week:
“Inspired by the comic book world both pictorially and compositionally at once, we’ve tried to find a way to make a virtue and a celebration of the distinction between the worlds that exist in the film but absolutely make them live in the same world,” Branagh said. “It’s about finding the framing style, the color palette,...

GTOs, Firebird Trans Ams...and the Solstice. Personified mainly by its muscle cars, for more than five decades Gm's Pontiac division drove its way into pop culture history. But those days are over. Financially decimated and fighting for its very survival, the General has announced that Pontiac is dead.
With its Gto the focus of a song by the Beach Boys, its Trans Am serving as Burt Reynolds' getaway car in the Smokey and the Bandit trilogy and the model for 'K.I.T.T.' in NBC's Knight Rider, and its Firebird the favored set of wheels for James Garner's detective Jim Rockford in The Rockford Files, Pontiac was a favored brand by both big and small screen stars alike. And, of course, who could forget the Solstice two seat roadster, as portrayed in Transformers?
General Motors had long put Pontiac on the endangered-brand list, but the...

Chicago – The time has come for another round-up, a collection of DVD and Blu-Ray titles that may have missed the front page in the Best Buy circular but that might be worth your attention. The DVD Round-Up is back (check out the first edition here and a few Blu-Ray Round-Ups here and here) with drama, comedy, TV, action, and even Hitler.
Nicolas Cage plays a killer in “Bangkok Dangerous,” Derek Luke a football player in “Friday Night Lights,” Aaron Eckhart a suburbanite in “Towelhead,” and Carmen Electra essentially herself in “Disaster Movie”. There’s something for everyone in the DVD Round-Up.
All of these titles were released on January 6th, 2009, unless otherwise noted.
“Bangkok Dangerous”
“The Hitman Has Become the Target.” Nicolas Cage stars in the remake of The Pang Brothers’ “Bangkok Dangerous,” a messy action film about Joe, a hired assassin caught in the middle of a hitman’s nightmare.
