Serbia’s first full feature animation is a cyberpunk adventure starring a scantily clad hot chick who’s turning into a human robot hybrid. No wonder this movie is generating so much heat. I was reminded of Ghost in the Shell, sort of, but really more of Milo Manara, an Italian comic book genius known for erotic works such as Click.
Technotise is based on the director Gajic's comic strip of the same name. The movie has great visuals, classic 3D animation, vector and collage animation, with a look inspired by Japanese anime, and I reckon the Francophone/Italian comic world. It’s an especially impressive look on a budget of less than a million bucks. That said, I was not blown away. The film promises a cool...

Toronto -- Jon Turtlelaub's "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," a live action remake of Disney's classic animated feature "Fantasia," will suitably open Montreal's Fantasia Film Festival on Thursday.
Montreal's Jay Baruchel, co-star of "Fantasia" along with Nicolas Cage, Alfred Molina and Teresa Palmer, will be on hand for the Canadian premiere in Montreal.

Festival highlights include world premieres for "The Shrine" from Canadian director Jon Knautz ("Jack Brooks Monster Slayer"), U.S. director Steven Monroe's "I Spit On Your Grave," a remake of the notorious 1978 rape and revenge movie "Day of the Woman," to be released by Anchor Bay in October, and Frank Henenlotter's "Herschell Gordon Lewis: The Godfather of Gore.

The Fantasia 2010 announcement onslaught continues ...
Montreal, June 29, 2010. Serbia's terrifying recent history has birthed a confrontational new generation of filmmakers who are using the medium to express their wounded psyches in ways the Western World can barely get its head around. Our spotlight, which we are calling Subversive Serbia showcases the key entries in this intelligently transgressive and politically-charged filmmaking scene. We're also going to showcase a string of retro Serbian genre films never before screened here, programmed in association with Dejan Ognjanovic and the Belgrade Cinematheque.
Beyond the screenings, Mr. Ognjanovic will be presenting a multimedia presentation and panel discussion - An Introduction To Serbian Horror Cinema - where he will be joined by the makers of many of the films showcased in our spotlight.
Your eyes are about to be opened. Wide.

I hadn't heard of Technotise before I read the news last week about a possible Hollywood remake, but now that I have, I am convinced that it could actually be something pretty cool. Technotise is a comic created by Aleksa Gajic and Darko Grkinic that spawned an animated movie called Technotise: Edit & I. Set in the year 2074, the story centers on a university student who implants a stolen military chip in her brain to help her pass an exam, only to find that the chip gives her unexpected powers as it slowly takes over her mind. While it's easy to look at some of the stills from the original film and assume this is a Japanese anime film, it is actually a Serbian creation. Now, according to Heat Vision [1], Legendary Pictures will be producing an American live action remake. The story of how the Hollywood deal came about is pretty interesting.
